More mindless rambling about the brawl

I have no idea who these two clowns are but they talked about the Yankees-Rays cage match on a video blog over on WFAN.com.
I kid. It’s Sweeny Murti and Mark Feinsand of the News. They know their stuff.

Pete what is with the Lupica ad?
I’m tired of reading about this.
jennifer:
I saw it too. It’s for his latest book.
And while there’s plenty of phony, self-congratulatory crap on that website, I didn’t see any e-mail address I could use to send him my two cents about his columns. Wait, that’s 1.5 cents more than his columns are worth. Nevermind.
Jennifer - funny you mention the lack of an e-mail address for Lupica. The address listed for his columns in the paper oron the web for the last two years is a phoney - just like him.
You know,I think the yankees humuliated themselves with this spring training contretemps, we are NOT a tough team, just a bunch of preening losers, with all the money we have spent this century, and have won NOTHING??
:(((
dammit Rangers finally loss
**Troll alert***
Looks like either Joe Maddon or a refugee from Boston is seeking attention.
my bet is a refugee
S Pete - if you’ve quoted Cash correctly:
Brian Cashman: “I’ll take 25 Shelley Duncans. How about that?”
Duncan’s not only driving the emotionl bus, he’s now sitting in all the seats. They (Cash,Joe G & Hank) are purposely building a more edgey image for this squad. The old guard from the Torre Dynasty who were brought up on the “Yankee Way” must be puzzled.
Looks like someone has a reading comprehension problem. I didn’t mention Lupica’s lack of an email address. I will however state that I tried to email him as well as other people I know and nothing goes through. So what is the point of having an email address if you keep your mail box full?
Rich looks like I have a reading comprehension problem. Either that or I blame it on a horrible week at work. I take it back.
Pete please get us a edit button
I look like a fool.
I love Sweeny and Feiny but that room Sweeny uses for his video blogs…yeeeesh. Sweeny, dude… you need to rig up a blue curtain right behind you. (Get one of those portable coat racks and hang a cheap drape over it).
could my wish come true ?
TAMPA, FL - The Yankees finished up their intrasquad games on a somewhat cold and drizzling Friday afternoon at the minor league complex. Angel Reyes highlighted the pitching performances as the Tampa Yankees blanked the Charleston Riverdogs 4-0.
Well it looks lie you guys will get some games on TV next week….Sunday vs Cleveland….Monday vs.Sox….Tuesday vs VT 300PM….and Thursday vs Toronto all on YES.
looks like
Wow people already jumping off the Hughes bandwagon. SNY asking: “Is Hughes feeling the heat?”
Is he really expected to be perfect in every outing because he didn’t get traded for Santana?
Jax are you serious? geez he had his first bad outing of st and he stinks? Did they say that Santana is feeling the heat when his first outing was awful? Maybe Phil’s outing was the “dead” arm period?
finally Hank weighs in on this:
“Hopefully, everything dies down with the Rays,” Steinbrenner said. “But nobody likes the Yankees anyway, and you just can’t continue to allow other teams to take advantage, and Joe’s certainly going to see to that. He’s got his players’ back, and I’ve got his back.”
Jax: I’ve noticed SNY is the most jump-to-conclusions type place. After Moose started ONE ST game they were saying he was done and didn’t have anything left. I hate SNY. Yet I still watch! I have a baseball problem
I love that outback steakhouse commercial tune. Anyone knows if that’s a real song?
Can you bet on spring training games? Not that I think it would be a wise idea by any means… but I will be in Vegas this week and was hoping they’d be playing them in the sports book
Have to love Hank man… get some swagger back in the box.
I thought for a minute that he was Mike Golic, not Mike Feinsand
LoL. That catchy Outback song would be a perfect theme song to the 2008 Yankees season.
I love the Outback commercial songs.
See here New Page, it’s a variation of the song by the band ‘Of Montreal’ -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Montreal
Jax there is only one or two guys on SNY who don’t fully hate on the Yanks plus remember it’s SNY (Mets heaven) but they are NY SPORTS
Hughes fared slightly better, but he was touched by Juan Castro and Ken Griffey Jr. for run-scoring hits in the first inning before recording an out. A flatter-than-normal mound may have something to do with the Yankees’ continuing struggles here, Hughes said.
“He struggled with command of his fastball,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “He figured out a way to get out of some innings later on with his changeup and getting ahead in the count. He just didn’t have the command that he’s had all spring. That’s going to happen.”
Hughes said that he normally can always turn to his fastball, even when his curveball and changeup abandon him for the day. Friday presented the opposite, as Hughes’ changeup became a go-to pitch but he couldn’t spot his heat.
“I think I just felt too good,” Hughes said. “I was really overthrowing. The ball came out of my hand real good; I just wasn’t throwing it for strikes.”
“I just wanted to get ahead,” Hughes said. “Even the balls that weren’t hit hard were getting through. It’s just one of those days when you’ve got to battle through.”
“It’s better to get it out of the way now than in the regular season, I guess,” Hughes said. “It was kind of a rough day.”

YES needs their own live sports programming. Who wants to see Running, White Shadow and endless reruns of Yankeeography?
Houston Rockets won. That’s 21 (twenty one) in a row. Wow. Too bad they will have to lose to the hated Lakers on Sunday.
the Lakers will lose

“YES needs their own live sports programming.”
Jax, I agree! And how about a special LoHud Yankees show hosted by Peter with appearances by some of the participants here.
I’ve only been here a few months and I already value the insights I get here WAY more than most of the mainstream media.
A LoHud Yankees show would rock.
As the resident Laker fan, I’ll take your potshots. You’ll also be happy to hear, Pau sprained his ankle 3 minutes into the game.

There’s a cool social network site called CollegeNet (http://www.collegenet.com) where current and aspiring college students discuss a wide range of topics, then vote on who they think contributes the most to the conversation. Winners get college scholarship money every month.
We could have similar votes here, with winners appearing on the YES Yankees Show.
Imagine Peter interviewing the guys, then sending us to a special report by SJ44, murphydog, rebecca, etc., etc. LOTS of awesome candidates here who would be way more informative/interesting than what we get now.
I just watched super-slow-mo of the Duncan slide and I’m absolutely astonished he was even ejected from the game in the first place. You don’t slide into the base when the throw beats you by a mile, you do a trick slide or slide at the glove. He did the right thing and while the spikes were very high, they originally only hit Iwamura at about the knee. I think if not for the previous Elliot Johnson play, Shelley would have been commended for playing so hard.
*** very = a little too
I’ve heard twice that Mike said something re: Duncan, but haven’t read it anywhere. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
i watched the slide again too. Shelley’s leg that spiked Iwamura wasn’t even straightened out, it was bent the entire slide. if he wanted to injure him, that would not be the way to do it.
Okay aren’t there some things that should be kept private?
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/specials/spring_training/2008/03/14/astros.injuries.ap/index.html
Good point, Jennifer. How much do inquiring minds really want to know? It’s the price of celebrity I guess.
found Mike’s quote in another blog entry.
“I’m all for playing hard, but you have to know what happens in such situations,” Mussina said. “The whole season now there is going to be a cloud over it with everyone waiting for the next whatever to happen. He kept the ball rolling. You like the energy and how he plays, and you believe experience will help him make good decisions.”
I have to say I have no problem with what he said. He is stating the facts.
Geesh First the guy from the Cubs has a twisted testicle,,now Kazuo Matsui has a problem with backside area!!!
my god do I really want to know that ! jesus HOuston do a better job of keeping it a stomach virus
Whats up with Melky throwing a punch at a Dirty Ray???
Suppose he were to break that hand, then where would we be??/
Without our CF for awhile.
I like Petes idea about retaliation on Johnson in the minors.
There was no reason for the umpire to throw out Heath Phillips the other day.
Twisted Testicle-awesome name for an all-girl band!
Because it’s the Yankees, every non-Yankee fan thinks:
(1) Johnson was just playing hard;
(2) Duncan made a dirty, borederline criminal play;
(3) Gomes was just helping out his poor teammate;
(4) Melky came in throwing dirty punches.
They don’t have to watch the videos; they know these to be true automatically.
“KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Houston Astros second baseman Kazuo Matsui will undergo surgery to repair an anal fissure on Monday in Houston.”
Did Shelley slide cleats high on Matsui too?
I watched the video a number of times, saw Melky running in, but couldn’t see him throwing a punch. I saw lots of arms flailing but couldn’t see a punch.
Yeah both teams were warned….mostly because the Dirty Rays made a phone call, expecting retaliation. But the pitch barely hit Longoria,he flipped his bat and hustled down t 1B and took his base.Perhaps that wasnt enough for Shelley, and he decided to take it a little further.
But if Gomes doesnt come running in from RF,which set off the benches getting emptied, then Melky doesnt throw a punch,Long and Meacham dont get fined.Gomes is just as guilty as Duncan, therefore it should be 3 games for all 3 players.
Nice one mel!!!
“I never punched anybody,” Cabrera said. “Bernie (Castro) was holding me back the whole time. I was trying to get into the fight, but he was holding me back.”
Domino Effect
Johnson lowers head and shoulder into Cervelli—Cervelli breaks wrist.
Heath Phillips throws in on Longora—Longoria gets hit and takes his base.
Shelley Duncan slides a little late into Iwamura—Iwamura get s a cut above the knee.
Johnny Gomes comes running in from RF,doesnt tackle Duncan, just pushes him from behind—Melky throws a punch at a Dirty Ray.
Back to a little baseball fun.
Hawkins grinned at his screwed-up shoes and said, “I’m just going to hold it against (Andrew) Brackman.” Brackman, the 6-10 pitcher who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, has been the butt of several jokes this spring. At one point, veteran players were moving his car out of the player’s lot.

U-man,
Anal Fissure for a punk rock band.
LOL, Melky. “It wasn’t assault, it was attempted assault.
jen
I just read that Longoria said he was hit in back of the head by a Yankee player….video shows it to be Cabrera.
Im just paraphasing what I read on Yankees.com
I havent seen the video.
Utilityman, Until I see Melky with a red circle around him throwing a punch I don’t believe it. I watch the video and don’t see it.
Bottom line, if Gomes the goon, didn’t run in and push Shlley it would have been over. Shelley was thrown out of the game the ump took care of it.
Where is the video. The only video online shows a blur.
Longoria says he got hit in the back of the head. That doesn’t mean he was necessarily punched. There was a lot of scuffling; he could have gotten hit by an inadvertent elbow.
I’d love to know what video the league has showing conclusively that Melky punched Longoria in the back of the head. Considering the league’s disparate treatment of the two teams, I am skeptical.
Another thing, if you watch the video the cf’er is running in to block the rf’er from getting to Shelley.
I agree with ya jen…..he threw him out right away.Gomes’ attitude is what started the benches to empty.
I find it hard to believe Melky threw a punch, but evidently Bob Watson saw him do it.
Is it on You tube???
Shelley was sitting on the ground looking at the umpire when Gomes started running in to assault him. His conduct was probably the most egregious of anybody’s.

Go to Google, and videos and type Yankees brawl. I tried to link it but it wouldn’t show up.
The comments don’t post when you click “submit comment” like they used to. You have to refresh and then they show up.
Yeah I have the same problem mel…..
jen
Thanks for that link………didnt see Melky at all..it looked like the umpire threw Duncan out twice, then grabbed Gomes after he had pushed Duncan.A different umpire walked Duncan away from the melee.
And to correct Gomes,Shelly never said “Im going to hurt one of their players” As he put it “IN ink”.
I know right. He said I’m going to play hard. Can he control what someone puts in writing.
We shouldn’t even be talking about a career .242 player anyway. He had 163 rbi in 3 seasons, basically what Alex does in 1 year.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/g/gomesjo01.shtml
Just to clarify, the .242 hitter I am referring to is Gomes.
Pete,
Can the IT guys fix it so that the comments show up when you click “submit comment”? Once you’ve had it, you kind of wish you had it back. Sounds like a country song.
The Yanks FO is pretty pizzed at this whole event. They brought up some ‘mean kid’ from the minors for the next brawl.
http://www.waswatching.com/archives/BaseballFury.jpg
Sounds to me like Gomes was just waiting to do something to Duncan, because as he put it “Duncan was going to hurt a Ray player”
Maybe Gomes doesnt read very well.He certainly doesnt know how to fight.Oh and maybe stay on your feet if your gonna try and get at someone.Shelly got pushed,as he was getting up from the ground, and never lost his balance!!!
You know what is interesting. I just read the Phil thought he had his best warm up yet, yet he pitched badly. And yesterday I read that Mike didn’t think he had his best stuff, yet he had perfect game stuff.
Didnt David Wells say his bullpen was aweful before he pitched that Perfect Game in May of 1998.
He was hung over from drinking
As always the guy that started the Whole thing aganist the Yankees gets away scot free, while the yankees get fines and suspensions.Touche~ It’s getting old!
Might not be a good idea to bring any of the “Baseball Furies” up to the major league roster.
They were carrying bats and still got their butts kicked by a much smaller gang with no weapons at all.
That movie brings back memories, though.
So apparently I missed stuff today.
Oh well. Glad I wasn’t in Atlanta. That owuld have been bad, I’m TERRIFIED of tornadoes.
the Yankees FO also changed the ST media guide because of the recent events they said it corresponds w/ the league new 2008 ST Yankee media guide
apparently Giambi is holding Shelley’s cleats
nice, Brandon. They’d look pretty badass if it weren’t for A-Rod’s goofy grin, front and center.
This figures.
Instead of YES broadcasting the Yanks/Tigers game today (Joba vs. Verlander), they are going to broadcast the Yanks/Rays instead with Igawa on the mound.
Meanwhile, Kennedy will face minor leaguers today as well.
I don’t get that. Igawa doesn’t really have a chance to make the team anyways so you would think he should be facing the minor leaguers and let Kennedy face major leaguers.
Sigh. This just ruined my Saturday.

Hank talks dollars and sense about Brawl-Ball:
“I don’t want these teams in general to forget who subsidizes a lot of them, and it’s the Yankees, the Red Sox, Dodgers, Mets,” he said. “I would prefer if teams want to target the Yankees that they at least start giving some of that revenue sharing and luxury tax money back. From an owners point of view, that’s my point.”
But he also said: “Nobody likes the brawl-type garbage, it doesn’t belong in sports,” he said. “And I don’t want to see anyone injured in a brawl.”

Giuseppe-
I am sure the Yanks don’t want the Rays to have an extra look at IPK. As these pitchers start getting ’stretched’ out- don’t be surprised if the Yanks but the regular starter to an ML game against the Rays and Jays to keep them from getting extra looks.
Lupica only has one real e-mail address -

In defense of Johnny Gomes.
You know, Johnny Gomes is getting, like, you know, a bum, you know, rap out of this, you know? He was, you know, like, he said, you know, that he was just protecting, you know, the little, you know, guy, you know? I just, you know, think we ought, you know, to put them all, you know, under, you know, oath in front of, you know, the Waxman committee, you know, and let George Mitchell decide, you know, who’s telling, you know, the truth, you know?
Yes, Johnny Gomes says “you know” a lot, but he’s a major league ballplayer protecting his team. This points to a deeper issue: the disparity between the teams in the American League. Seriously. You know, if the Tampa Manta Rays of Anaheim have to, you know, start Johnny Gomes in center, the league has, you know, problems. You know?
Gotta love Hank. The Rays are the #1 recipient of baseball welfare.
don’t be so hard on mr.gomes, likely its the first interview he has ever done. i mean normally at some point in a career you have to do something noteworthy, and thats a first for gomes.
