It’s time to make your NCAA picks

Peter Abraham

ncaalogo.jpgI used to cover college hoops before I ended up on the baseball beat. Selection Sunday was the best day, seeing who was in, who was out and where we would be going. I loved every second of it.

The last Final Four I covered was in 1999 but the NCAA tournament remains a must for me. My Final Four picks: North Carolina, Kansas, Pitt and UCLA. I like the Tar Heels over the Panthers for the title.

LoHud.com is running a brackets contest. Go to lohud.com/brackets to register and compare your picks to mine. Hopefully we get a nice group from the blog in the pool.

You have until the first games on Thursday to pick your teams. Good luck.

I pick the Yankees to take it all!… Wait what?

  2. Number 27

    GO HOYAS

  3. C

Stanford over Kansas…you heard it here first.

  4. myrtlebeachfan

    UNC, Drake, Pitt, Georgetown

    Pitt vs. UNC

    Pitt wins.

    23.67% risk.

  5. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

  8. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

myrtlebeach I have Pitt over UNC

    Pitt, UNC, Clemson, UCLA

  9. Andrea - anti-anti

Rebecca: could have been worse. You could have gone to an all women’s college…those are some boring sports.

  10. Marc

Thanks Pete, you just put the kiss of death on my Heels!

  11. Clare

    Who knows, who cares?

14 days til opening day! And unfortunately someone just scheduled a meeting for 1 pm on 3/31. I hear the flu will be going around that day. :)

  12. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

    Clare: i hear that!

  13. Stephen

    Go St. John’s! …yeah right!

  14. Clare

    MikeEff,

I mean seriously, who schedules a meeting at that exact time? Obviously not a baseball fan. I mean really, the idea that one should put WORK before baseball? I just don’t get it. :)

And I have tix too (unless I got sucked into a Craigslist scam).

  15. Clare

I mean, I mean, I guess I should go to bed.

    Given that whole work thing.

  16. NJ in Tampa

It was easier the last two years when I knew Florida was going to win :(

  17. Andrea - anti-anti

I had opening day tickets but I gave them to my dad for his bday.

  18. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

now you are one good daughter Andrea!

  19. Clare

    That was nice Andrea.

I was planning on going with my Dad, but now he’ll have to find someone else (assuming I ever get the tix, that is).

I did, however, receive all the tix I bought to the first series at Camden this weekend, so that was cool.

  20. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

you know i ordered single tickets the day they went on sale, but haven’t gotten them yet. i got my holiday pack though. i wonder why they haven’t sent the others. did any of you get your single tickets ( non -season tickets) yet?

  21. Andrea - anti-anti

hehe. I took him last year for his birthday. This year, I’m (hopefully) starting a new job soon, so taking a day off already would be bad.

  22. Andrea - anti-anti

MikeEff: I ordered some tickets through the season ticketholder presale, and I haven’t gotten those yet. I ordered some $5 tickets the other day, though, and I just got an email saying those were sent out. So I’m not sure what the deal is.

  23. YanksAngel

    Final 4
    UNC
    USC
    Memphis
    UCLA

I did have two #6s and a #7 in my Top 8, only 14.22% risk.

    UNC to take it all

First time doing this so hoping for beginners luck!!

  24. Triple OG

I saw an article on Sabathia and free agency and the possibility of him wearing pinstripes.

So I looked at his career stats and he’s a good pitcher no doubt. But a close look at Wang’s stats really makes you appreciate what you have.

Sabathia is 100-63 with a 3.83 ERA over 7 full seasons.

CMW is 46-18 with a 3.74 ERA over 2.5 seasons.

I realize the Indians haven’t always been as good as they were in 2007, and CMW has had the #1 offense to back him up, but we need to appreciate Wang. He’s done great in his very short career so far. Two full seasons. Two 19-win seasons.

  28. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, Chasing Greatness!

In my Final Four I have North Carolina, Georgetown, Memphis, and UCLA. As an unapologetic homer, I have Memphis winning it all. I think that we have too much depth, athleticism, and talent for everyone else to handle!

  29. EY

Cornell will beat Stanford. Go Big Red!

I’ll worry about what’s after that later

  30. Kj

    UNC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. Terrible Tom Paine

Way to go out on a limb there with your Final Four, Pete. Three 1 seeds? No wonder you don’t cover the sport anymore.

  32. Shane

Pete where are your brackets? Logged on to the tourny and filled mine out. Could not compare picks.

    Let’s see who you got.

  33. Dustin Ingalls

My Heels (class of ‘07, baby!) win it all over Texas. Kansas and UCLA are the other Final Four teams. The Midwest has the best chance for competitive upsets. Wisconsin and Georgetown are both great teams I can see in the Final Four, and I have Davidson over Gonzaga and Clemson over Vandy. The South and West are also upset-prone. I have Pitt beating Memphis but losing to Texas because that regional is in Houston–c’mon! Marquette could beat Stanford. Duke won’t get beyond the second round, losing to West Virginia. Purdue will beat Xavier but lose to West Virginia.

  34. Skippy

I tried to sign up for the brackets and my name was rejected as offensive… I know I can be pretty naive sometimes, but I can’t wrap my mind around this one at all.

  35. saucY

i filled out a grid because i’m sure i’ll be filling out out for a work pool soon…

(actually, i just wanted to make a lohud jersey…
    http://lohud.com.pickmanager.c.....080478.jpg )

  36. cj

    UNC
    Kansas
    Pitt
    Duke

    Kansas to win it all

  37. Dustin Ingalls

Sorry, no way Duke beats UCLA, if they even get that far. They have no big man to compete with Kevin Love and are relatively young and inexperienced. And they’ve been pretty weak of late. That’s not just my Duke-hating Tar Heel self talking; ask any NCAA observer.

  38. Kenny

Hey Pete, you must be happy that you’ll see you’re ol’ Huskies buds again in Tampa.

Hopefully they win both, but Drake is a tough team if they face them in the second round.
