Joba waiting for word on his role

Spoke to Joba Chamberlain this morning. He is due to pitch again on Thursday but doesn’t know if it will be as a starter or as a reliever.

“They haven’t told me anything,” he said.

With the season starting March 31, the Yankees will have to make a decision soon so he can prepare.

Notes: Mike Mussina will start a minor-league tomorrow afternoon with Jose Molina catching him. … Mariano Rivera will work in a different minor-leeague game. … If you’re in Tampa, don’t bother coming to Legends Field tomorrow. Those players not going to Virginia Tech have the day off. … Boston manager Terry Francona was generally insufferable before the game, snapping at every question he was asked. A championship and a new contract didn’t change his disposition apparently.

Team brass will meet soon with Joba’s role on the top of the agenda, but here’s an article about Joba’s gut feeling:

No love loss between our man Pete and Francona. Who would win in a knife fight? My money is on Pete Abe.

I always thought or had heard that Francona had a good disposition with the media guess I heard wrong?

first time i’ve read anything negative about francona’s personality…

  8. mel March 17th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

I think Tito’s aggravated by the upcoming schedule. Either that or the Nicorette’s not working.

College PCs suck. I’m stuck watching MLB.TV with no picture; I hope Paul’s in the booth again so I don’t have to listen only to Michael Kay.

does pete have a feud with francona?? that would be awesome. big time street cred points here on the blog.

he starts in the BP effects maybe 30 – 35 games for us in the first half then in 2nd half he becomes a SP and effects the outcome out of 8 or 9 game series.

Ooh. Big Dilemma. Listen to Major League the movie on the telly or listen to Michael Kay on the computer. Hmmm. Tough one.

  14. mko March 17th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Francona was pretty nice in his interview on YES a few minutes ago…but maybe he just likes Michael Kay better ;)

Now, if Joba slides into the rotation who comes out if Moose is strutting his stuff, Ian’s racking up the wins, and Hughes is mowing through lineups?

I suppose it would be Ian because of IP counts. He did well in the long man role to help us win our only game in the division series.

  16. mel March 17th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

    Oops, make that Phil.

  17. Patrick March 17th, 2008 at 1:15 pm

    mel, you mean Phil?

  18. mel March 17th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

    Yes, Patrick!

    Happy Saints’ Day!

  20. Skippy March 17th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

I thought Francona had a nice guy rep, too. Was that sarcasm so dry that even I didn’t get it?

  21. jay destro March 17th, 2008 at 1:17 pm

gametime weather is sunny and warm. Andy is warming and lugo is taking cuts in the circle. Here we go!

“Now, if Joba slides into the rotation who comes out if Moose is strutting his stuff, Ian’s racking up the wins, and Hughes is mowing through lineups?”

That would be a WONDERFUL problem to have. It’s a cliche, but these things usually work themselves out.

    Thanks JR7769

Really good interview of Hughes – haven’t heard Kennedy yet.
Kim Jones really does a good job. Much better than her post-game fluff.

NYC has it’s first black mayor in history now on to baseball :)

  25. Bad Scooter March 17th, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Patterson is now Governor of NY State.

    David Dinkins anyone?

  26. Buffalohead March 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Hey Murray Jr….maybe he knows hacks like you called him a liar last year.

  27. saucY March 17th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

i just remember howard stern making fun of how much that guy would sweat while at a podium…

“where’s the squeegie man when you need him?”

  28. saucY March 17th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

    p.s. i was talking about dinkins…

For what it’s worth, I believe that Joba should be allowed to return to being a starting pitcher. It’s his background, his training and his history. Except for a brief time last year when Joe Torre made him a ‘set up man/closer’.

Has anyone asked Joba his preference?? If not, they should – it is the right thing to do.

  30. Bad Scooter March 17th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Annie, you’re naive if you think that was Torre’s call last year on where to pitch Joba. Torre never saw Joba pitch until Joba’s first appearance with the Yanks.

Who cares about Joba’s preference? He’ll pitch where they want him to. My guess is the pen for now and maybe all year. Next year rotation.
