The Yankees are underway at Virginia Tech. I am not at the game (Sam Borden is) but hopefully you’re keeping track of it at MLB.TV or on YES.

Spoke to Sam briefly and he said the people on campus are thrilled that the Yankees are there and there’s a huge crowd at the game.

1-0 Yanks, top of the first. Great work by the Tech pitcher, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam with one run.

Hey Pete – Will you let us know where we can bid on the maroon VTech hats the Yanks wore during batting practice? I’d love to get one – and support the cause at the same time.

  2. rbj March 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

“Watching” it on mlb.tv, but it is cutting out every couple of seconds. very frustrating.

  3. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    Go Hokies! Go Yankees!

  4. Yewnork March 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Alright I’m watching the free broadcast of this on MLB.tv and I am getting clear YES network audio with sporadic pictures of the game. It’s not really video.. anyone else have this problem? I usually run things like this without any problem.

  5. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Try going back to the original media player. I was having problems with their “new and improved” player but it is working fine on the original.

  6. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

If you’re on wi-fi that could be the problem. If you’re wired up to broadband it’s fine.

  7. rbj March 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Hmm, I’m using the original player & am wired to broadband, and am still getting the crappy video.

  8. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

hmmm… VT needs alot of tuning, the SP have some stuff , they just need more control hopefully Eiland gives them some tips

  9. JBRO March 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Wired on broadband, but at school.

I cant see MLBtv selling any subscriptions from this. Its like a slide show…

  10. raymagnetic â„¢ March 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Man, those boys look young. Are they really in college?

  11. Kevin CT March 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Yea I’m on a corporate network and it’s a disaster cutting in and out. Typical “live” streams..

  12. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Or there could be so many people watching that it is over loading their server. :)

  13. OldYanksFan March 18th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

MLB TV is perfect for me. Nice stadium for a college.

  14. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Man v tech isnt messing around today. Its like they want to win this game starting a no name lefty against us.

  15. Kevin CT March 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Is it bad I’m rooting for the Hokies?

  16. saucY March 18th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

no problems here. other than my boss being in today :|

  17. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

It looks like these errors could be because of the wooden bats. And they’re nervous. I think the Hokies could lose this game 45-1 and they’d still be ok.

  18. soapter March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

It seems that VT really wants to win this game…

  19. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

2 of the bay boys are the VT coach’s kids (they asked to bat boy for the Yankees even though they are red sox fans)

  20. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Kevin CT: I think we all are.

  21. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

The VT players seem bit nervous

  22. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

They seem a bit nervous. Need to stop looking at the pinstripes and just play their game.

  23. Wolf In Pinstripes March 18th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

No problems with mlb.tv for me either.

Man, looking at the faces of the players and especially the crowd, you can see what a great time they are all having. Lots of smiles and laughs all around. Very cool. 8)

  24. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

    saucY,

IT right? Tell your boss you’re helping people with tech issues.

  25. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

we all are CT, they look shook out there, I mean just have fun kids, how many college players can say they played vs the NY Yankees

  26. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

That was a terrible swing. Looks like Abreu was helping him out a little.

  27. Kevin CT March 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

This pitcher does have some guts though…

  28. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Mean Bobby. (Brandon, do the evil icon for me)

  29. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

S.O.S, I’m sure that’s easier said than done, haha.

A little off topic, but I’m liking Bob Lorenz announcing.

  30. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

The only reason you should have problems wathing this game is if you have a low speed connection, i.e dialup..

  31. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

I hate to say it, and I know it would be silly, but I kind of wish they’d stop walking…it just seems kind of weird to be walking in runs against a college team.

Some of those balls are unhittable though. So you can’t really blame them for that.

  32. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

Mean Alex. (Brandon, do the evil icon for me)

  33. raymagnetic â„¢ March 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

  34. Kevin CT March 18th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

  36. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

They are such kids! Did you see them all come out to applaud their teammate’s catch at the wall?

  37. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

    Alex

    Jason

  38. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

I think Alex took one with that pop-up in the first…They can’t look stupid out there…

That said, I they they would swing at anything near the strike zone

  39. Frank Discussion March 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Watching over a cable modem, no problems at all.

  40. Yewnork March 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

“The only reason you should have problems wathing this game is if you have a low speed connection, i.e dialup..”

I’m pretty sure I have high speed and that I have never had this problem before.

  41. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

On another note–the Nationals are currently beating the Tigers 9-0. And guess who’s behind the plate–our old pal Wil Nieves!

  42. OldYanksFan March 18th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Man… think of this. One kid just faced Abreu, ARod and Giambi, all with the bases loaded. What a task for a college pitcher. He will NEVER forget this day!

  43. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Suuuure the wind got it, Michael Kay. Or maybe you need to do some training on depth perception during the offseason. I roll my eyes in your general direction, Kay.

  44. AS2008 March 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Is there a scoreboard that is working anywhere? the one on MLB isn’t updating? Gameday maybe?

  45. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

so im the guy who caught the final out in right field a few years later.

“you know i stole a homerun from Giambi’s bat in an exhabition game.”

Someone needs to tell Girardi to ease up a bit and stop having them work this pitcher like he’s Colon.

  46. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Lori
Let the kids have fun, they have been through a lot.

  47. YankeesBen (I'm Happy Hughes Stayed) March 18th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

Well Giambi’s out was good for both teams. You can’t really ask the yanks to swing on balls in the dirt.

  48. trisha March 18th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

Work has been interfering with my enjoyment of the game!!! Could anyone give me a shorthand of how we scored the last three runs? Thanks and I will check back later.

  49. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

    AS 2008
Watch the game foe free on mlb.tv
Just go to Yankees website and click watch live.

  50. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

    Was that on purpse Shelly?

  51. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

oh how nice were showing the Hokies how to react to errors

  52. CB March 18th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

Giambi’s shot was a good experience forthe pitcher.

Giambi nailed it but still an out.

Great example of why you have to throw strikes. No defense against the walk but when they put it in play there’s at least a chance of getting an out.

  53. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

It kind of stinks that the other starters didn’t just make the trip to VT, even if they weren’t going to pitch today. I understand the reasons, but this was too important to leave anyone behind in Florida.

  54. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Yankees4life – Absolutely! I was saying it like a good thing – I love that they are enjoying this.

  55. soapter March 18th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Was the error on A-Rod or Shelly…

  56. trisha March 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I have the game on MLB TV but cannot pay attention to it. I can’t find a box score or would have tried to figure out how the runs scored. No biggie. I’ll find out later.

  57. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

    Brandon,

LOL. Thanks. Evil & Twisted. That’s how it’s done, huh?

  58. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I dont know about you guys. But IMO Jeter was showboating on that flip to Cano.

  59. The J Train- Save The Drama For Yo Mama March 18th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    whats the score ninjas?

  60. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

    Yankees- Sign Angela!!

  61. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

    calm down Shelley

  62. YankeesBen (I'm Happy Hughes Stayed) March 18th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Nice girl he’s got that first baseman.

  63. mel March 18th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

    trisha,

There’s no gameday, boxscore, or scoreboard.

    There’s us, though.

4-0 Yankees, bottom of the 3rd after a 1-2-3 inning for the Hokie pitcher.

If I was O’brien, I’d keep Jeter away from his girlfriend. She was cute.

  64. Wolf In Pinstripes March 18th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Regarding the broadcast troubles – I had some trouble sporadically with mlb.tv last year even though I was on high speed cable. I came to find out when I was talking to my cable company a couple months ago that my cable modem was pretty outdated and they geave me a free upgrade. Basically the modem was killer when I got it, but wasn’t able to handle the increased bandwidth demands of web applications that have changed over the last couple of years. No problems whatsoever since. So it’s not just a matter of your type of connection you have but also how healthy your modem’s download speed is.

  65. PAT M. March 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

    Agree on the show boating……

  66. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Did i see that right. Techs players are wearing the ny? How cool is that. I say let one of their bench warmers or Coach come in and pinch hit for the Yankees in the 7th inning. Crystal like.

  67. YankeesBen (I'm Happy Hughes Stayed) March 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

‘If I was O’brien, I’d keep Jeter away from his girlfriend. She was cute.’

    Definitely agree.

  68. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

    mel,
How did we score the first run. No dont tell me, we stole home?

  69. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Who’s broadcasting with Kay and what’s his story?

  70. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 4:02 pm

sos – bases loaded sac fly by ARod.

  71. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Thanks Lori. Hope the bases werent loaded all on walks.

  72. Camaroon15 March 18th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

To ‘Say it ain’t so’: I was thinking the same thing about Bob! Could it be, or could he be better to listen to over the course of a season than Kay?

  73. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    SoS,

    An error maybe?

    YankeesBen,

Something came up on the radio yesterday. Monty from Sporting News Radio was going on and on about how hot Stacey Dales was. (borderline unprofessional). That she was hot and actually knew her stuff, unlike Erin Andrews.

What do you think? I googled Dales today and she’ okay. I figured the guys here would have an opinion about it, even though many of them think Kim Jones is hot. lol.

  74. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Mel- Bob Lorenz is with Kay today. The guy that does the pre and post game shows on YES. He’s the one that is really sarcastic but in a corny way.

S.O.S – I thought the same thing about Jeter but I wasn’t going to say anything. Little bit of a showoff on that play.

I still say the Yankees should sign that softball pitcher. Let’s break another barrier and sign a female ;)

  75. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Camaroon15- I could very easily get used to Lorenz over Kay. It would be a welcome change, imo.

  76. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Wow – so cool of ARod to sit with the VA Tech players.

  77. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Alex is giving them Hokies pointers wow man

  78. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I agree, Lorenz’s tenor is great. Easy on the ears.

  79. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

well the minor leaguers are coming in now – should be fairly evenly matched now…

  80. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

    Are the regulars out?

  81. CB March 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Jeter was not show boating. I really doubt the yankee players are trying to react differently in this game than they would in a regular one.

He was several feet behind the bag and Cano was on a sprint to the bag.

He just made the play as he would have in a regular game. Jeter makes that kind of toss all the time.

That was a fairly quick decision play – Jeter didn’t have much time to think about styling the play.

  82. hmmm March 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

i heard A-Rod only gave 2-3 pointers then walked away without saying anything.

  83. Wolf In Pinstripes March 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Alex hanging out with the kids in the VT dugout. Forgive me if I sound like weepy mother, but it’s just really cool to see how special the Yankees are trying to make this day special for VT, both as an organization and individually.

  84. YankeesBen (I'm Happy Hughes Stayed) March 18th, 2008 at 4:10 pm

    Mel

I’ll check out dales, but about Kim, she might be blond but noting exciting, the softball pitcher is so much hotter.

  85. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

    oh com’on he went !

  86. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:11 pm

    Give it to em blue!!

  87. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

    GOOD FOR YOU FISHER !

  88. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

They really need to change that check swing rule. If your bat head swings that far through you meant to swing.

Brandon, look at us advocating for the kids!

  89. Say it ain't so March 18th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

    Wow, Alex. A little enthusiasm?

  90. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

“big league hitter” – well, it’s Lane. Not quite. But still a nice K.

  91. Central CT Yankee March 18th, 2008 at 4:13 pm

It still bothers me to see Ensberg wearing #21

  92. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Look at Alex, not even looking at the person he’s giving the ball to. JUST KIDDING!

  93. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

nice breaking ball kid ! Cashman also was laughing in the background

  94. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Is it too early to sign that kid?

  95. CB March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

ARod surrounded by all those kids is a great image. Good for him.

    Nice inning by the pitcher.

  96. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

YANKEE PRESS RELEASE: Yankees sign VA Tech Freshman Brandon Fisher after he strikes out two in pre-season game . . .

  97. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

I still say the Yankees should sign that softball pitcher. Let’s break another barrier and sign a female

Wouldnt be a bigger risk than Igawa was(that failed). At least she throws strikes.

    mel-Stacey is cuter than Kim

hmmm-good to see you back. I thought you bobcatted us.

  98. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    Say it aint so,

    lol.

  99. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Mel – But did you see how they were all just feeding him balls to sign!

  100. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday ) March 18th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

    sign that kid!!!

  101. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

OK, after hearing that interview with Pete Hughes, I say, “Put the pedal to the metal guys!” j/k.

  102. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

CB-That was a fairly quick decision play – Jeter didn’t have much time to think about styling the play.

Agree to disagree. IMO he was showboating

  103. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

So how many innings for Karstens today?

  104. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    Lori,

I know, but it’s still lol.

  105. Clare March 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

    hmmm,

Good one. However Kat O’Brien seemed to be able to get ARod to answer enough questions for an article:

  106. PAT M. March 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Alright CB, maybe he wasn’t Cadillacing , but very much the laid back routine flip…Very casual……Consider all the heat that A-Rod was getting on this blog last night, it’s real cool to see him relaxed and signing….Hope it gets some copy in the NYC papers…..

  107. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

V-tech kid has the best baseball last name. Hacker and he swings at the first pitch.

  108. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday ) March 18th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

are we actually arguing about jeter showboating? c’mon guys…

  109. mel March 18th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Jeff needs to worry if Patterson or Ohlendorf are in games for 2-3 innings for a long-man looksee.

  110. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:21 pm

  120. YankeesRfirst March 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

This is awesome. Soooooo happy for the Hokies. God Bless em all. The student body, players and community all seem to be embracing this. This game would be closer if not for some errors. And I hope the Yankees have given ideas to other professional sports on how to extend a hand in times like these.

  121. Kevin CT March 18th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

mel… the Royals are a great organization with huge media draw. Why wouldn’t they advertise on the free MLB.tv preview with the NY Market inundating the broadcast?

Oh c’mon guys. I’m getting on a plane to Kansas City just to get one of those cool new blue jerseys! ;)

  126. CB March 18th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Pat – A little casual I’ll buy! I think the entire day/ experience for the campus is a bigger deal than the game itself. All the yankee stars could have played an inning and called it a day.

I didn’t agree with Pete’s point last night on ARod. For three years he kept stumbling all over himself by trying to explain himself to the media/ fans. It wasn’t good.

Then last year he had 54 home runs, 1.076 IPS and was 96 runs better than a replacement level third baseman.

  127. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 18th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

It’s a nice day and it was great to see all the players come. It would have been very different if Jeter, ARod, Posada decided not to come.

  148. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

What hitter does he remind you of – yankee or non-yankee?

  163. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 18th, 2008 at 4:50 pm

cano reminds me of a lefty hitting jose vidro (vidro is a switch hitter)…a healthy, younger vidro of course…20-25 homer pop with 330 potential average…320 and 20 seems like something he can do year in and year out.

  171. C2010 March 18th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    What happened to E-Ram?

  172. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 4:55 pm

    CB,
Everyone says Rod Carew. Beside being less patient and hit for more power. (I saw the latter part of his carreer)I would tend to agree. There are similarities. Carew a little more hunched over.

alright people I’ll see ya later

  178. PAT M. March 18th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

CB…..Hands down, Rodney Carew with more power….Besides his plate presence, he drives the gaps like Carew…He’ll need more leg hits to be at 200 hits per season….He and Angels Howie Kendricks will vie for AL BA Titles for the next decade….Some have mentioned Tony Gywnn when he first came up ( Tony had power then ) but I agree with the many who say Carew….I’ll never forgive # 25 for turning down the Yanks and signed out here in Anahiem….What a great talent, and a real good guy as well……

  179. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 5:01 pm

Guess he just went qith the flow. Kay said IPK and Joba. If you hear those names you just add Hughes to the list :-)

  192. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge March 18th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Who is scoring all the runs?

  193. CB March 18th, 2008 at 5:09 pm

I know the Carew comparisons have come up with Cano a lot – that’s was one of Torre’s first impressions of Cano when he came up. Torre didn’t blow the horn of young players too much and I remember when he brought up Carew so quickly the had something.

I didn’t see Carew in his prime but what I saw you could tell he could just hit. One of those guys who was born to hit. But Cano hits the ball much harder more often than Carew I think.

Might sound strange – but Cano’s hands remind me of Paul Molitor. Great wrists, beautiful compact swing. Though Cano has more power than Molitor.

Cano’s overall game last year with the swing, power and average started reminding me a bit of George Brett as well – the balance of his hitting.

I agree on Kendrick – he’s going to be terrific. But Cano will have more power.

  194. Wolf In Pinstripes March 18th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

    LOL @ saucY :D

  195. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

The starters were taken out in the 4th inning for the Yanks.

  196. mel March 18th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

When did it get ugly? After the interview with the VT coach talked about the Red Sox.

I hope that Shelley gives Pete Hughes one of his specialty balls with “Red Sox Suck” on it. lol.

  197. Rishi March 18th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

down to the last out – I’d take an HR right about now

  198. murphydog March 18th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Yeah, there is something about Cano at the plate that reminds me of Carew. But Robbie doesn’t have a different stance for every count like Carew used to.

I’m not sure whether Robbie will win a batting title, however. He doesn’t seem that quick out of the box and doesn’t hit the flares, bloopers and dinks that Carew used to get. Robbie’s still young, though, and may develop a better knowledge of the strike zone to go with that sweet swing.

  199. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 5:13 pm

If he’s gets anywhere near the Carew,Brett or Molitor hitting success. We will be so lucky to have for the next up teen years.

Kendrick is a stud. I totally agree.

  200. shawn March 18th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

I am a lifelong sox fan and I just wanted to point out what a classy thing this is for the Yankees to do. Bravo kids bravo.

That being said, let’s go sox. you know if we ever get healthy…

  201. mel March 18th, 2008 at 5:15 pm

  202. Lori March 18th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

mel – top of the 7th. Yanks scored 5.

  203. PAT M. March 18th, 2008 at 5:16 pm

Good call on Molitor..Great hands…As for Brett, he was a stone pull hitter who developed into a hitter who could go the other way…..Of course we all remember how he tortured the Yanks…Ask the Goose, I’ll never forget the bomb he hit in the 80 ALCS into the far reaches of the upper tank…..Cost Howser his job, they had a great team that year..Won something like 109 games…..

  204. Dee March 18th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    I dvr’d it, can’t wait to watch.

11-0! That Girardi is ruthless, wouldn’t want it any other way:-)

So were the VT guys able to throw strikes or have contacts at bat? Did anyone almost score and we just had really good defense (an unfair statement I know) or was it not even close?

  205. Andrea - anti-anti March 18th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

  206. trisha March 18th, 2008 at 5:18 pm

I don’t know if MLB TV stayed with the game and showed the players on the field but this was definitely one of the Yankees finest moments and we have to be such a wonderfully proud lot.

You will hear me say a few things ad nauseum throughout the course of the season. One is I LOVE DA MELK! The other is, I am SO thankful that we ended up with Joe Girardi as our manager. He is bright, energetic, articulate, fiery, respectful, just an all-around phenomenal guy. And I understand he does NOT drink green tea.

    :)

  207. Yankee4life! March 18th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    Dee-

The score has no meaning in this game. It could have been 10000-0 and it wouldnt make a difference. This day was to show the people at VT that we care and we wont forget what happened. It was nice to see the VT kids laughing and getting excited to play a MLB club.

  208. asburyboss March 18th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

OK…its safe for Igawa to come in

  209. CB March 18th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

The issue for Cano this year is the start he gets off to. Last couple of season’s the first half has been awful for him. Huge second halfs but the first half really blunt his season. He’s been very good this spring and I hope that gets him off to a good start.

Brett really did torture the team. Maybe that’s why he sticks in my memory so much. Him and Goose – great match battles. He became a terrific all fields hitter.

  210. Dee March 18th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Of course I know the score does not take away from the kind gesture and what it means to the VT community. But since a game was played and they decided to keep score, I’m just curious how the VT players performed.

  211. CB March 18th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

It was a good final score for the game. The sox embarrassed boston college and northwestern earlier in the spring during exhibitions. One game was 24-0 and they just stopped it.

VT did not embarrass themselves in any way.

  212. trisha March 18th, 2008 at 5:29 pm

“That being said, let’s go sox. you know if we ever get healthy…”

Shawn, thanks for those good thoughts. And in terms of feeling your pain, we have been the kings of “if we ever get healthy.” That and Japan is a guaranteed kick in the ass. I’m sure you’ll understand when I say, your turn!

  213. S.o.S.27 March 18th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

    Dee,
v.t. seemed a little nervous the first couple innings. After that they played pretty good. Cashman is going to sign a couple of their pitchers and their right fielder should be on espns web gem. They didnt come close to scoring. But it wasnt for a lack of effort. Oh and Jeter stole the first basemans girlfriend.

  214. Ranting Guy March 18th, 2008 at 5:40 pm

What? No catchers being levelled, no spikes-high slides, no blind-side tackles and no payback pitches??? Today’s game was for wimps. :)

Just kidding … but seriously: My tongue-in-cheek quip reminds me that that guy Joe Maddon hmust really have his act together. Tampa stands a good chance at winning the Grapefruit League title for 2008.

    Reggie = Mr October
Jeter = Mr November (remember ’01!)
    Winfield = Mr May
    Maddon = Mr March

    Way to go Joe Maddon.
See you (on the golf course) in October.

Nicely put. I can see Tampa fans wearing their 2008 GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE CHAMPS shirts and hats once the regular season starts.
