Duncan, Cabrera to play in Opener

Shelley Duncan and Melky Cabrera will not have their appeal heard until after the team returns to New York, likely on April 1.
That means they’ll be eligible to play on Opening Day. Bob Watson, baseball’s chief of discipline, will be in Japan for the Red Sox-Athletics series and won’t be available for a hearing until he returns.
Also, the San Diego Padres returned Rule 5 Draft selection Michael Gardner to the Yankees. A 26-year-old right-hander, Gardner appeared in six games during spring training. He allowed five runs on eights hits. Gardner was assigned to the minor-league camp.

Take the suspension right off the bat and be done with it, then play with a clear head.
I want to go to Japan sometime.
(Personally, I’d rather have Melky and Shelley just sit out the first three games and be done with it, but I’m thinking I’m in the minority on this)
I don’t think we’re in the minority on that (the suspensions, not the Japan trip).
I can go either way on this one. It’d be nice if they could play opening day (although I don’t see Shelley starting the game, but maybe coming in relief of Giambi at 1B?)… but then they’d just have to sit out games another time, instead of just getting the suspensions over with.
But who knows? Opening Day is over a week away, and we don’t know exactly whats going to happen between now and then?
Okay, so my last sentence doesn’t flow right. What I meant to say was that anything can happen between now and opening day, so I’m not really going to worry about it until next weekend… because by then we should know fairly definitively what’s going on.
I’m going to bed before the moles start weighing in.
The only thing that makes any sense is that one of them drops the appeal and serves while the other is playing. It is easier to cope one man short for 6 games rather than 2 for 3 games.
I blame the Red Sox
WHoo hoo that did make my night only because they will get to experience opening day at the last year of Yankee stadium with their names called etc.
I know it is sappy to say it but I think that is great.
everyone is an expert, I love it
I’m happy about it because I drafted Melky Cabrera in one of my fantasy drafts tonight and I want to get off to a quick start.
Peter Abraham, at the cutting edge of breaking Yankee news.
It’s appreciated.
This is good news, even if they still have to serve the suspension at least they can say they were present for the last season opener in the “old Yankee Stadium”.
Plus, Melky’s innocent =)
Those two are gonna get a great reception. Hell, it’s gonna be an amazing final Opening Day March 31! Can’t wait to be there!
Think of the Players.
Is opening day a big deal or what?
Yes it i
It’s good that a ST game won’t keep the two from partaking in a lifetime experence
I think is great, just look at from from their perspective, they want to play the last opening day in the best sports arena. Woun’t you.
