Good morning, grandpa

March
20

Mike Mussina came in this morning and asked Phil Hughes who pitched for the Pirates last night.

“Some old guy,” Phil Hughes said.

Mussina than found out it was Matt Morris, who is 33.

“That’s old?” the 39-year-old Mussina said. “What am I?”

    ancient…

  2. Mark Alan

If you’re over thirty, never ask a kid for an adjective to describe yourself: geriatric, decrepit, etc.

  3. Kevin CT

    fossilized

  4. Stephen

Is it common for pitchers to not know who’s pitching for the other team? Morris isn’t exactly a minor league scrub, after all!

Or was Hughes kidding around with Mussina?

  5. Drew

I work with a woman half my age..she says the same kind of crap..brats.

  6. murphydog

“That’s old?” the 39-year-old Mussina said. “What am I?”

    A) Lucky

    B) Good enough to be still going when most others are gone.

    C) A competitor of the highest order, fighting his body every year to get in shape and hang in there for a long season, when he could just as easily be tending to his tractor collection – he’s already financially set for life.

Hughes gets every one of these points about Mussina and, if I had to guess, is fairly in awe of Moose. Hughes was just breaking the Moose’s shoes.

  7. Say it ain't so

LOL, Phil better be careful before all of the “old guys” on the Yankees stick his head in a toilet for old time’s sake.

  8. Skinnyhead

That also would make Captain Jeter an “old guy”.

  9. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I think that was just banter between Phil and Mike.

    From Buster Olney this morning:

As the Red Sox threatened a boycott of Wednesday’s game, they worked for team unity, as Jackie MacMullan writes.

The sentiment behind what was essentially a three-hour boycott was admirable, but the players handled the situation very clumsily; it was their union that negotiated the stipends for the players and did not support the coaches, just as it has for years, and if the players weren’t aware of that, that’s their fault. But it was the fans who bought tickets to the game in Ft. Myers on Thursday who ultimately suffered, and were forced to sit around without information, while waiting to see if a resolution could be reached.

Given that it was the responsibility of the Red Sox players to understand the situation before it became a crisis, a more magnanimous gesture would have been for some of the Boston players to offer up their stipends to the coaches, given that some of them are paid somewhere between $60,000 and $100,000 a day, rather than victimizing the fans. Or the Red Sox players could’ve quietly informed the Players Association and Major League Baseball that once in Japan, they intended to insist that the coaches’ situation be addressed. The nuclear option of sitting out games only needed to be implied, because there was zero chance that the Red Sox would’ve forfeited these games; there was zero chance that Major League Baseball would’ve let that happen.

Instead, the Red Sox walked out on a crowd that had paid in good faith to see a baseball game. “At the end of the day, it is the fans that took the hit,” said a major league executive with another team, in disgust.

To repeat: The sentiment behind the gesture is admirable. The relationship between the Red Sox players and their coaching staff is as close as any player-staff relationship in the sport. It was a money matter that had nothing to do with greed on the part of the players. But their action was rash and not particularly thought out or executed well.

    Good entry by Buster.

  12. Robert

Mussina has got to use his smarts and leverage is 18 plus years in the big leagues. Pedro Martinez is adjusting quite well even though he doesn’t throw 98 anymore. I think he will be more creative this year.

  13. 108 stitches

Sooner or later Wilson Betemit will need to show that he deserves to be on the 25-man roster.
    He’s had a lackluster spring.

  14. murphydog

Jackie MacMullan’s right, except for one thing she neglected to consider: the Sox are ballplayers, not philosophers or scientists.

  15. saucY

thanks for posting that rishi. i missed most of the nonsense that went on yesterday due to nonsense at work.

    dear red-sox-nation,

    your team hates you!

Yeah I ws there….leaving tonight…..off to Dunedin to watch Ian…see ya there Pete……..

  17. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    murphydog

Why is it that the Yankees headed by Mike Mussina knew they had to share. Oh thats right, Mike is a graduate of Stanford in 3 years. :P

  18. Rishi

I always like to read Buster’s take on an issue…he’s generally pretty level-headed.

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Rishi: Thanks for that from Buster, good read.

I love to see that the old guys and young kids seem to be getting along so well; it’s like the opposite of Dodger Land last year.

  20. chaossolver

one of the best pitchers in baseball from early 90s to 2004. Someone who still holds the ALCS strikeout record with 15Ks in a playoff game. Someone who pitched 8 2/3 perfect innings against the red sox until everett had a single. Despite the last year, this is a guy that deserves to be respect from fans of his team.

  21. Brian from PA

Oh Phil, you crazy cut-up! Moose should get back at phil by buying him some diapers or a pacifier or something.

So, I had this dream last night. I’m not gonna call it a premonition because i don’t really believe in that, but it was very intriguing…here it is: ALCS 2008, game 7, Fenway Park Yanks at Red Sox (which sucks because since its fenway means the dreamworld me thinks they will win the east). It’s some late inning, i don’t remember which but i think it was extras, and it’s a 1-1 tie. Bobby Abreu hits a 2 run bomb around the Pesky Pole and Mo shuts down the sox in the bottom of the inning.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Brian, doncha know that if you say a dream it don’t come true? :-P

  23. Bryan

    Wussina needs to go away

  24. Brian from PA

sorry Rebecca i was just excited about it. plus, it doesn’t need to be Bobby so something similar could still happen.

  25. Stacey

Hughes can bite me. I’m 33 and I’m not old! ;)

  26. JBRO

    Brian from PA,

Mussina is going to need those diapers in about 10 years…

  27. matt

Hey dont hate on Matt Morris we graduated from the same high school more then 10 years apart though.

  28. Melissa

    haha. that’s so cute.

  29. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I think this is all a dig on what went on between Joba and Mike. Joba telling Mike that he needed a hearing aid.

Phil was poking Mike by calling a 33 year old, old.

  30. NYSuperFan

Sounds like Moose and Hughes have a good relationship…I love seeing their quotes back and forth…hahaha

  31. Brian from PA

mussina should make some arrangements that require Phil to be his personal caretaker when moose is old and senile. that’ll show you, phil!

  32. hmmm

    “Wussina needs to go away”

i see what you did there. you changed “Mussina” to “Wussina” to imply that Mussina is a “wuss”.

i am bowled over by the cleverness. bravo to you sir.

  33. wood is good

Man, the name calling on this blog is sooooo clever! “Wussina” for Mussina. You deserve to be on Def Comedy Jam!

  34. murphydog

    jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Don’t forget the most important fact. Moose was an economics major.

  35. Brian from PA

I wish it was March 31st.

  36. Jake

    That is hilarious.

    Mike, you’re…you’re…OLD!

  37. Jay

That’s really funny, and to be fair to Phil (if he was joking or not) Matt Morris does look 59 years old. I’m shocked he’s only 33.

  38. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

how long before Marcus Williams goes Sprewell on Lawrence Frank :?
    source

  39. rackem

Matt Morris was a TERRIBLE trade by the bucs. what were they thinking taking on that salary??

  40. dealmaker

Any Sean Henn sightings ? He seems to have disappeared off the radar.
Cashman could be in a dealing mode with teams starting to pare rosters in the next week.

  41. S.o.S.27

Well Hughes just crapped me out. Im 33 and still wearing teanage clothes. Here i thought i was still young. I always made fun of those moms who tried to dress like thier daughters when they had no business doing it. Now im the man version.

    hmmm,
What the hell! Did your job take your computer away. Wherev you bin? Seasons about to start and we need you in tip top shape.

  42. S.o.S.27

Anyone worried about Hughes last couple games? I know its spring training but its in the second half now and hes giving up more runs than i would have expected. Im a little worried. Hope hes just working on some pitches and not really showing his real arsinal.

  43. Wolf In Pinstripes

Huh…Instead of “older than dirt”, I am now “older than Moose”.

Seriously though, that’s some funny stuff between Phil and Mike.

  44. Scorpio

Good post by Olney, thanks Rishi.

Finally a reporter who is objective about the “boycott” instead of the blanket adulation for what is tantamount to the Red Sox’s own blunder.

  45. hmmm

“What the hell! Did your job take your computer away. Wherev you bin?”

life has been getting in the way of my yankee fandom for the past few weeks. been too busy to watch ST games…

  46. back bench

So we can minimize a repeat of yesterday’s ’sky is falling’ dialogue, can the ‘gray beards’ (no disrespect here at all -the fact that a number of very knowledgeable people invest their time to this blog makes it extremely valuable and entertaining) provide some metrics to look for in today’s outing by Kennedy, Joba and Farnsworth? What are we looking for in pitch count, mechanics, etc?

Since I don’t understand Italina, I need the libretto for this opera.

  47. back bench

    *Italian*

    sorry

  48. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

I love how Evan Roberts and Joe Beningo two of the most passionate fools when it comes to baseball !!!! are crticizing how the Yankees will handle Joba, it’s almost as if guys like Carlin, like M&MD, like Roberts and Beningo and some from ESPN just can’t stand the thought of the Yankee braintrust knowing more about thier pitcher than they do. I will enjoy when they are proven wrong even might call in to rub it in thier face.

oh and the Evan/Beninggo believe David Price ! will break the innings cap trend !!

    lets see

    at 19 pitched 69.1 IP (16 games 10 starts)
    at 20 pitched 51.2 IP (9 games 7 starts)
    at 21 pitched 133.1 IP (18 games 17 starts)

already had pain this spring gee I wonder why ! and it will be interesting if he pitches past 130 IP this season heck I’m betting 80 IP

  49. whozat

Command in the strike zone would be nice. That’s basically it :-)

  50. S.o.S.27

Thats sort of good to hear hmmm. I thought you might have bobcatted us. We could have used you yesterday with all the boston soap oppera invading our site.

Well make sure you handle all your business before the season starts. Or you could do what i do and make your business wait. Lose some money doing this all day long instead of working. The only good part about it is i cant get fired.

  51. S.o.S.27

Does anyone know if their is a site to watch March madness?

  52. whozat

Do the starters mostly have two more go-rounds before opening day?

    I think so, right?

So…I guess I’ll amend my answer. Consistent mechanics, mostly good command of their stuff, velocity nearing full-bore, but still not all the way there wouldn’t be surprising. I figure we’ll want to see their full arsenal of pitches, but won’t see them mixing them intelligently until next time out?

  53. MikeEff- Shelley , Play Every Day

Brandon, what can you expect from the mets lovers… i will say one thing in those guys favor. at least they don’t usually treat their callers like garbage like mike and lapdog do.
interesting info on david price, i guess it looks like they will ruin his arm.

anyway, let us know if you ever decide to call in…i’d love to hear you rip into them

    ;)

  54. saucY

brandon, check out thesportshernia blog, beningo is becoming one of the guys they love to laugh at over there…

    here’s the most recent:

  55. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

MikeE I would have been lost in gathering that info before but now I’m starting to get how important an innings cap on a pitcher is. (thanks to SJ,CB,whozat and etc…)

btw whose watching the NCAA right now

  56. S.o.S.27

    Brandon,
Do you have any upsets for the first 3 games? I have Temple.

  57. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

Saucy he looks like count chocula there  , but I don’t mind him when he speaks NFL or Knicks debacle, just when he goes M&MD style on baseball points

  58. Jax

None of these bad teams whether it’s the Rays,Royals,Pirates etc…take it easy with these young pitchers. They want them to be good right away and they want to win right away that they most of time rush them through the system and or have them throw as many innings as possible with little concern about injury.
Don’t be surprise if the Rays do the same with Price.

  59. Randy Johnson

Then what does that make? I’m 42 years old, you know.

  60. MikeEff- Shelley , Play Every Day

so the red sox sent bartolo colon over to the minor league camp today…i guess they weren’t too impressed with what they saw the other day either.

  61. Elizabeth--FarnsWORTHIT

Hear hear, murphydog!! :) Moose is a warrior.

  62. Fran

I think that those show hosts on the FAN will criticize the Yanks no matter what they do. If the Yanks were starting Joba in the rotation they would probably say that he should be in the bullpen.

  63. MikeEff- Shelley , Play Every Day

Jax, don’t forget the Blue jays, they basically doubled McGowan’s innings. and also one of the other guys…Lietch maybe.?

  64. S.o.S.27

so the red sox sent bartolo colon over to the minor league camp today…i guess they weren’t too impressed with what they saw the other day either.

But he was clocked at 96!!

  65. Randy Johnson

Actually, now I’m 44 years old. When do I get my break?

  66. saucY

    i picked temple too

  67. SFYanksFan

SOS – CBS is broacasting all the games online.

  68. gayle

My first round upsets are St Joes and Sienna winning. How can we see who everyone else picked or do you just have to wait til the first round results are in??

  69. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti)

my mouse is freezing SoS I’ll post my upsets in awhile

  70. mel

    SoS,

    Ask and you shall receive:

    http://ncaasports.com/mmod/?source=mktg_mmod08_vip2_lvhp&refcode=mmod08_vip2_lvhp

I remember this from last year. The only weird thing is, there was limited seating. Like if there were too many people watching, you were queued.

  71. S.o.S.27

Donnie Walsh is hoping for a quick resolution regarding his future, and one of three scenarios has the Indiana Pacers CEO replacing Knicks president Isiah Thomas as soon as next week, according to a person close to Walsh.

There you go Brandon and all you Knick fans. There might be a light in the end of the tunnel.

  72. Randy Johnson

Actually, now I’m 44 years old. When do I get my break?

    http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f9/RandyJohnson.jpg/300px-RandyJohnson.jpg

  73. LibertyBelle

I thought the rep on the Rays was that they were generally thought of as being pretty conservative with their pitchers.

  74. Ross (NYY Stadium Insider)

Isn’t Matt Morris going to read about this and be a bit angry with Phil?

Don’t the Yankees play on the road, at Pittsburgh this year?

Isn’t there a very good chance that Phil will have to step into the batter’s box against Morris this year?

Is it really the place of a beat writer to share this conversation from the locker room?

Obviously, Phil didn’t have to say that in Pete’s presence, but it seems that at this point Phil trusts Pete. I’m not sure if putting this quote on the blog in the sake of humor was such a good idea.

Someone tell me if I am crazy. We may think it is funny, but Matt Morris may take it personal. It is a bit disrespectful, even if Matt Morris sucks.

This is where blogging gets a bit dangerous.

  75. Randy Johnson

I don’t like the NY media. Did you introduce yourself to me, Peter? No reporter did.

    i picked temple too

Dammit saucy. The last time we picked the same teams in the nfl. We got all 4 picks wrong. Thank god there is 32 games.

  77. hmmm

“so the red sox sent bartolo colon over to the minor league camp today…i guess they weren’t too impressed with what they saw the other day either.”

didn’t the rest of the team fly to Japan? doesn’t it make sense for Colon to stay behind so he can pitch in minor league games?

  78. mel

    SoS,

If he’s not on the Sox roster by May, he becomes a free agent. What are the chances that…? You don’t think that Cash would…? Nah. No way. Never.

  79. hmmm

“Isn’t there a very good chance that Phil will have to step into the batter’s box against Morris this year?”

do you really think Morris would drill Hughes for what he said? that doesn’t seem realistic to me.

  80. S.o.S.27

    mel,
Why not sign Colon to be our batting practice pitcher? Absolutely. Our team would never get into slumps. Especially Arod. If not Colon then Kim. I would make them the highest paid in their fields. Well worth it.

Thanks for the link. Im having problems with my media. Oh well. My teams are losing anyways. I had my 4 year old fill one out and he might end up beating me. Now thats sad.

  81. S.o.S.27

do you really think Morris would drill Hughes for what he said? that doesn’t seem realistic to me.

Thank god Morris doesnt play for the rays. If he did, we would have to worry. Because Rays have a new Tough identity and its intimidating.

  82. SP

    Ross,

Pete wasn’t the only reporter to post the Hughes-Mussina exchange. Dan Graziano posted it on the Star Ledger blog too.

And no, I don’t think anything will ever come of it

  83. gianthinker

Mike Mussina came in this morning and asked Phil Hughes who pitched for the Pirates last night.
“Some old guy,” Phil Hughes said.
Mussina than found out it was Matt Morris, who is 33.
