1,029 percent? Now that’s inflation

Maury Brown, who writes on the Business of Sports Network, looked at the cost of box seats at Yankee Stadium over the years and found they have risen 1,029 percent since 1967.
Get this: a box seat at Yankee Stadium in 1967 cost $3.50. Just wait ’til next year.

i just had to pay 80 bucks a ticket for upper deck seats.
Thank God for Hi-Def TV and the Internet. Going to live games with be a thing of the past for most of us.
From what I have heard this does not even compare to the increase planned for next season.
he has a point there. But he volunteer his time to calculate the salary of a person in his position in 1967 as well? and if he finds a huge difference, is he willing to compromise for a more steady increase? com’n people! a ball player in 1967 only dreamed of getting the same amount of money that a rookie gets now in days.
You should mention, as Maury does, that the inflation-adjusted price was $22- any comparison to past prices is meaningless without adjusting for inflation. The 1029% increase is so adjusted.
There’s a good treatment of this here:
http://riveraveblues.com/2008/03/14/the-economics-of-yankee-tickets-2327/
The prices essentially matched inflation until the early to mid 90s- the first big jump was ‘94 to ‘95. Anything interesting happen with the Yankees since ‘94?
I’ve been opposed to the new stadium from the beginning.
There is nothing in this for the fans - it’s ALL about more dough for the Yankees and heaven forbid if they start to become mediocre because no one’s gonna pay $350 to see a crappy team.
I choose to blame my favorite whipping boy Randy Levine.
Not only are tickets more expensive, they are also squeezing out our seats. I already knew that in the new stadium we’ll have 3,000 or so fewer seats than in the old stadium. But when I got the relocation letter last week, I realized they are also creating more “outdoor suites” where my current tickets are (in the main box level). In other words, they are not only pushing everyday fans out, they are also pushing people up away from the field.
In case anyone is curious, some of these outdoor suite seats will be as high as $700 per seat.
lol!! good one SP. GREAT POINT!!
Guess the point is has the salary of the average Joe increased by a factor of 10 since 1967? It’s certainly risen very significantly. What players make is a cost driver on ticket prices, but they don’t have to buy them. Is the game being priced out of reach for many? Sure. But a free market drives up the price of a scarce commodity - and lately Yanks tix have become pretty scarce. Will be more so in the new Stadium. And try getting cheap tix in Fenway!
But hey, this blog is free!
“I choose to blame my favorite whipping boy Randy Levine.”
who knew Randy Levine was responsible for the fundamental priciples of a free market economy?
the Yankees have ALREADY sold out 46 games and the season is 2 weeks away.
so it’s fairly obvious to me that the tickets are priced correctly.
there is no one to “blame” except the fans that are willing to pay these prices.
just because you (or i) are not one of those lucky fans doesn’t really mean anything.
supply and demand.
“it’s ALL about more dough for the Yankees and heaven forbid if they start to become mediocre because no one’s gonna pay $350 to see a crappy team. ”
right, and in that case, prices would come down.
supply and demand.
“the Yankees have ALREADY sold out 46 games and the season is 2 weeks away.”
Um, how many of those tickets are sold to middlemen who add their own fees to the top, and are currently unsold to the end-user?
(In reality, I don’t think tickets are priced accurately. I think ‘key tickets’ (opening day, Mets, Red Sox, etc.) are considerably underpriced, and mid-week scrub tickets are overpriced, but hey, whatever ;-)).
So what!It is a business in NY of all places the most expensive place to live.Look at what the fans get in beantown no value at all, that’s a rip off.
A very simple equation. The “haves” or somebody that knows or works for them will occupy the Stadium seats. All others will be seen in front of their TVs or computers.
The only option is a lottery hit or some other form of windfall.
V-
do you think the yankees care who those tickets are sold to, whether it be ticket brokers or fans?
tickets are sold, and its guaranteed money for the organization… its a sad state, but its true…
and the fact that it may be ticket brokers who are buying up these tickets proves that people will pay even more than face value for these tickets, or else the ticket broker business wouldnt be buying seats in bulk like they do… because when i watch a game on TV, i dont exactly see a lot of empty seats, whether it was middlemen or fans buying them.
SP: The 1998 season.
I posted this link in the last blog entry… if you want to get a good idea of what the new stadium will look like and what the view will be from your $700 premium box seat (per game not season), check this out…
http://newyork.yankees.mlb.com/nyy/ballpark/premium_seating/index.jsp
“Um, how many of those tickets are sold to middlemen who add their own fees to the top, and are currently unsold to the end-user?”
um, from the Yankees’ perspective, what does that matter?
ticket ‘brokers’ are ridiculous. it’s unbelievable that it’s allowed, but i guess it’s tougher to go after them then the guy on the corner a block from the stadium.
but “ticket brokers” are the same thing as services like StubHub, really… and MLB openly approves of StubHub because they pay money to be the “official marketplace” for reselling tickets.
Hmmm:
i bet you cry yourself to sleep every night missing the good old days of Reagan…oh wait, you have one of your boys in the white house now….
Waaaaa Waaaaa! Granted everyone has the right to voice their opinion (as I am here in this post) but man have I heard enough crying from people about the new stadium. First it was “oh but there is so much history, how can we tear down the stadium where Ruth and Gehrig once played”. Nothing last forever, and from what I’ve heard the current stadium is just not in good shape on the inside (maybe Pete can chime in on this). Also as Yogi Berra once said, its not the same stadium he once played in due to the rennovation in the 70’s. The only similarity from 1923 to the present day is where home plate stands. Really I’m all for history but who really cares. Once the yankees win a championship or two in the new stadium, there will be plenty of history to bank on there.
Secondly the ticket price escalation. Hey it was bound to happen eventually. Its the world of sports people. Stop blaming Steinbrenner or Levine (even though I’m not a fan of his) and accept the fact that a sporting event is not something you take a family of 5 to anymore. Maybe you take a friend, a child or your wife. Thats really the only way sports are affordable to the average fan. And with the improvements in technology its not a bad trade-off since its almost better to watch at home then it is live now.
Finally the stadium isn’t losing that many seats, Yankee stadium will still be one of the biggest stadiums, if not the biggest, in the game. Yes its tough to get a ticket, but if you really really want one, you can get it on stubhub. Bleacher seats will still be $12 bucks and Tier Reserve will still be $22(according to Lonn Trost) so maybe you can grab one of those.
But I hate to say it but welcome to the 21st Century. Nothing is cheap anymore, so please stop crying about how the new stadium is some huge disaster because you can’t buy a seat near homeplate for $3.50 anymore.
so anyway Yankees have a tough choice today, Cody Ransom or Morgan Ensberg, geeeeez what to do
In their never ending battle to emulate the Yankees, the Boston Socks will be sure to jack up ticket prices for 2009 and beyond to assure that they’re the highest priced in all of baseball.
OT – Im not at all worried about the big three, about who’ll play 1B, etc. I am however a tad worried about Bobby Meacham…
im down to once or twice a year myself. it seems like they’re gonna charge around $45 bucks for the cheap seats, but there are very few of them, and it looks like alot of the bleacher seats are going to have thier view obstructed by the restaurant.
i dont mind them soaking ppl who want the best seats (especially when they can easliy recover thier money anytime they dont use them) but they need to keep a decent # of cheap seats available.
there will once again come a time when the yankees need thier working-class fans to buy tickets, and they need to remember that while ticket demand is off the charts now.
Brandon,
Is that true? I take Ensberg. And stash Gardner where no one can find him.
Rebecca,
I just saw highlights of your Syracuse win over Maryland. They were behind, but stormed back. Good win.
Some guy called Mike and the Dog last week saying he got information about next years ticket plans in the mail that day. Bleacher tickets will be 24 bucks game now. Doubled the price…Nice.
“i bet you cry yourself to sleep every night missing the good old days of Reagan…oh wait, you have one of your boys in the white house now….”
wow, you couldn’t be more wrong about my politics.
did i ever offer anything i said as a personal endorsement or opinion?
no, i’m simply explaining the facts of the situation. this is simply the way it is. people are complaining that the tickets are too expensive, i am merely pointing out that this hasn’t stopped the Yankees from selling a ton of them. if they were too expensive, people wouldn’t buy them.
at no point did i say this was fair or unfair, right or wrong.
in no way does this imply that i support Bush.
this will hopefully be my last political post on this board. i hate when people talk politics when we’re trying to discuss baseball.
Matt,
One of the local news stations contacted the Yankees, who said that the caller is incorrect.
SP directed you to the post of mine I was about to point out. In real dollars, ticket prices stayed steady from 1967 until 1994. It was only at that point that they really started spike.
Thank god for the bleachers.
even though the bleachers sections are dry and get pretty damn uncomfortable after a few hours, it’s fine with me if i can get into the game for under $20. the atmosphere in the bleachers is second to none anyway.
Guys,we need to stop complaining. You could be boston fans and have to over pay to sit in a sardine can thats been pissed on. I consider Yankee fans living in New York very lucky to even have the opportunity to see a home game. Tickets in so.cal for a Yankees game is sold out the first day available. If you want seets near right or left field it cost 175 a pop(from a broker). When in reality its a $30 seat. Its all good guys. Its all good.
Man i might have to trash my brackett already. My boy got the first 8 games right yesterday when i got 5. And doesnt even watch it one bit. Im convinced that the less you watch during the season the better youll do.
Mel according to the paper this morning the Yanks have to make their decision on Ensberg in terms of if they will have to pay him the major league roster salary of I think 1.75 mill by midnight tonight.
I believe that this was so if they were not going to take him he would then have 2 weeks to find another gig.
this will hopefully be my last political post on this board. i hate when people talk politics when we’re trying to discuss baseball.
So what your saying between the lines is you support Ralph Nadar? I wont get into politics in a Yankees blog. All i will say is HAVE HOPE.
Th worst part about the new bleachers is that so many of them will be obstructed view, thanks to that center field restaurant.
The Yanks say they didn’t realize the design flaw until it was too late and will install lots of TVs, but it’s no solace for me!
1) Shiny things cost lots of money.
2) The new stadium will be very shiny, so too the on-field product.
3) The new stadium will need to take in lots and lots of money.
I will be home, watching the entire season in HD and drinking cheap(er) beer.
Please, guys, enough about the prices. At least you get to go. Please appreciate it. It would cost me a minumum of $2000 to even get there and see a game. I love the Yankees so much, that I’ll watch them on a crappy video player on the computer. They still look good to me.
“Some guy called Mike and the Dog last week saying he got information about next years ticket plans in the mail that day. Bleacher tickets will be 24 bucks game now. Doubled the price…Nice.”
I’m sorry I don’t believe that. Unless I get a letter or someone can confirm it with a quote from a yankee offical. Lonn Trost, who is pretty much in charge of the whole stadium project, did an interview on Mike and the Mad Dog a few weeks ago where he said bleacher seats will NOT be increasing and Tier Reserve seats will still be the same price.
So I’ll believe a yankee offical before I believe a radio caller.
I personally think they need to keep Morgan Ensberg on this roster.
Given the choice of seeing a game on TV in the comfort of your own home or at the ballpark, I don’t know why people would choose the latter. I’ve been a ferven baseball fan for 55 years, number of times I’ve been to a major league ballpark = 0.
Can i get your thoughts on signing Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract for insurance(colon like). I had a few successful years with Seattle and it would be better than having Kei step in. Horne might not be ready till midseason and im not a fan of Rasner. Does anyone know if hi fastball is anywhere near 90?
yeah, put me down for keeping ensburg…
Matt – Yankees haven’t sent out info on next year’s season plans yet. They sent out a letter telling current ticket holders to expect relocation info during the 2008 season, and to sign up for premium seating upgrades. I signed up for the upgrades just in case so they will keep me informed, even though I have no intention of paying $350 per seat which is how much the premium seats will be close to my current seats. Unbelievable!
Speaking of tickets, just stubhubbed my first tix of the season - 4/17 vs the Sawx ($125 per for Main Box, but, eh?).
me too TurnTwo I just think a RH power bat vs LHP is going to come in handy some time. I also like Ransom and his ,more versatile but also have to admit he’s been a career minor leaguer for a reason.
For those of you complaining, when box seats were $4 (1972):
You could buy a 4 bedroom house for less than $30,000,
Gas was .55 a gallon, the average annual income was around $11,000. You could buy a new Cadillac for $6,000.
It’s all relative.
Also as far as them shutting out the “average guy”, in many cases it’s a matter of priorities. If you aren’t smoking a $4 pack of cigarettes a day or drinking a $6 six pack, or buying $25 worth of lottery tickets a week, maybe you could afford the ticket prices.
I am not criticizing those who choose to do the above, rather, I am trying to point out that many people don’t realize where their money goes.
SoS,
Duke almost lost, you doodoo! I don’t know if I was more upset about the possibility of them losing or the possibility of you being right.
Wow, your old men put a hurtin’ on the Baby Bulls. Did you look at the rest of their schedule? What do you think their final record will be?
solid 1st inning by pedro, i dont know if he’ll hold up, but he still has stuff and he knows how to pitch with the best all-time.
Sos it wouldn’t hurt, but I doubt Freddy would agree to a minor league contract. Although he would be a better option than Moose (eventually)
If we keep Ensburg. Does that mean that Betimet will be our backup for 2nd and short? I like him better on the corners. What about Woodward?
exactly… the Ransom’s of the league come a dime a dozen… with Ensberg, you dont know what you’re going to get, but the upside with him could be worth much more than a decent middle reliever or another utility guy who isnt going to get much time, because our IF, minus injuries, is set for the next couple years, let alone the next 162 games.
Ensberg could be an everyday DH; and you know what? if he became disgruntled because he wasnt getting any playing time, he’s trade bait after having a solid spring.
“The Yanks say they didn’t realize the design flaw until it was too late and will install lots of TVs, but it’s no solace for me!”
yeah, this seems pretty bad to me.
hopefully when the stadium is open, it’s only a small number of seats and the view isn’t too obstructed.
My friends grandparents have 4 seats in a luxury box next to George’s. Now that is the way to go. Find a friend like that
Watching games up there is awesome.
Y’s Guy pencil Pedro for two stints on the DL, the Mets are going to be in trouble this season, I compare it to the Knicks of the NBA, when the perception that you got that much better but in reality the teams around you are catching up and getting stronger, they have a big fight to get through the NL, I mean look at the Nats, the Braves (who imo will win the NL East) the Phillies , there is gonna be a dog fight in the NL this season.
i worked in dad’s restaurant as a kid washing dishes.
whenever he groans about how a car used to cost $4 grand, i remind him that at the same time, he was paying me $1.75 and hour.
mel,
lol. You were damn lucky yesterday. Cause i wasnt going to let up on you today. Belmont in the last minutes played not to lose rather than win. How do they let the man with the ball take it from one end of the court for a layup? Isnt rule #1 stop the dribbler? The only good news about it was they were one of the few i had winning the first round(out on a limb, i know). Out in the next round though.
Your Lakers are starting to scare me a bit. They have beating two good teams without Gasol or Bynum. Your bench has to be tops in the league. Props.
Spurs will go 10-4. Attention popavich:dont be stubborn. START MANU!!
supply and demand
Brandon,
Now the rumors are that Jerry West might want to be Knicks gm.
I have a few thoughts on this that I’m going to try to express in one post without being incoherent. Here goes:
1. Think about how much the value of the franchise has increased over the years. From $10 million in 73, to perhaps $1 billion today. If my math is right, that’s a TEN THOUSAND PERCENT INCREASE. Even more reason for the Steinbrenner family to stop gouging the fans.
2. I don’t really care about the price of the best seats. Once it goes over $100, and the average fan can’t afford it, it might as well be $500. These seats are filled by rich people who can afford to pay. What bothers me is that the price increases for upper deck and bleachers seats, and the decline in the number of affordable seats in the new stadium, are preventing a lot of fans from enjoying a live game.
How ridiculous to say that we should “stop whining” and “just get used to the idea” that we can no longer take our families to a game. I’m not surprised that people here would start to wonder about the politics of anyone who espouses such a “greed uber alles” philosophy.
3. I hate when people compare baseball to other businesses and say something like “if you don’t like it, don’t go.” Baseball is not like other businesses. It’s a monopoly. Until Congress removes the antitrust exemption that baseball has enjoyed for about 80 years, baseball cannot compare itself to businesses that operate in a free market.
man watching Elijah Dukes at the plate and what a special hitter too bad he’s been a rotten human being (get it together kid)
anyway I think this season is the best NBA season I have witnessed since 2002
Does anyone else have Western Kentucky upsetting Drake? American University only down 33-30 to Tennessee in the 15 min left.
-Brandon,
Now the rumors are that Jerry West might want to be Knicks gm.-
SoS, you know it’s the right decision and because of that and the fact Jerry would never take a position unless Dolan STFU and stays away from the basketball ops. I just don’t see it.
unfortunately they need a tear down, from top to bottom, everyone thought Layden was bad and he was trust me he was but Isiah in record time has made everything worse, so worse that the whole thing needs to be ripped down and we right now have to settle for a GM not to make it a competitive team but just to get it in the right direction !! This is truely sadenning
SoS,
Wow. We’re pretty close. Before yesterday’s game, I had them going 10-5. Depends on how motivated they are, but seeding never really matter to Pop. Doesn’t matter anyway, there’s no easy path this year.
Pop’s going back to the lineup that won it all last year. Manu from the bench.
There’s no glamorous NCAA games this morning, no Yankee ball. Yawn.
“Sos it wouldn’t hurt, but I doubt Freddy would agree to a minor league contract. Although he would be a better option than Moose (eventually)”
You really think a guy with a bum shoulder will be a better option than Moose will be.
How’s Dukes look? I grabbed him as a flyer in the 19th round of my 20-team keeper league
Supply and demand. Hank was right about the Yankees being the team with the hats all around the country.
“Brandon,
Now the rumors are that Jerry West might want to be Knicks gm.”
Please God let this be true. Amen
when his shoulder or if his shoulder gets healthy what Garcia can be yeh I truely believe this.
Ask yourself if Freddy were healthy right now do you seriously think we’d take Mussina over him ?
I take it back, this is getting good.
That second 3 by the American kid to tie it with Tennessee was gorgeous.
V, Dukes hit a laser double of Pedro in the 1st, Keith was analyzing his swing as solid.
P.S. the Mets are trying to start calling in ala WFAN to speaks MEts during ST games, who’s genius idea is this
I’m not surprised that people here would start to wonder about the politics of anyone who espouses such a “greed uber alles” philosophy.
Sorry hmmm i hope you knew i was joking when i said Ralph Nadar. Your still my hero no matter what political side your on.
ML-Good points. But i have to say. Its hard to take your family to games these days with all the drunks around you,the fights and the vulgarity. No respect for kids what so everBetter staying at home. Now thats sad.
in the n.l. east the phillies will have the best offense but only 3 good starters, it will be fun in philly this year. but the ‘rivalry’ is cursed by the schedule maker, mets/phils only play 5 games post all star break only 2 in philly.
You really think a guy with a bum shoulder will be a better option than Moose will be.
Ray-Any idea how hard hes throwing?
it’s gonna be funny watching Johan’s reaction to a flyball HR in Philly
it’s gonna be funny watching Johan’s reaction to a flyball HR in Philly
“The worst part about the new bleachers is that so many of them will be obstructed view, thanks to that center field restaurant.
The Yanks say they didn’t realize the design flaw until it was too late and will install lots of TVs.”
I don’t believe this for a second. When my firm went through a renovation I remember the architects brought renderings and perspectives from every angles imaginable. They built models to study the space ad nauseum before it was built. And it was nowhere near a one billion dollar construction project. I’m not trying to be a conspiracy theorist here but that was a stupid excuse/a lie if the Yankees actually said that.
sos, the vulgarity in public issue is not confined to YS, the stadium is just reflecting society around it.
“How ridiculous to say that we should “stop whining” and “just get used to the idea” that we can no longer take our families to a game. I’m not surprised that people here would start to wonder about the politics of anyone who espouses such a “greed uber alles” philosophy. ”
right, except i wasn’t the one who said “stop whining” or “just get used to the idea”. you are combining the statements of 2 different posters.
“when his shoulder or if his shoulder gets healthy what Garcia can be yeh I truely believe this.
Ask yourself if Freddy were healthy right now do you seriously think we’d take Mussina over him ?”
If Freddy were healthy has nothing to do with the equation. Right now we know Freddy has a bum shoulder that he had surgery on to repair his labrum. I don’t think there’s any way that in less than a year from having surgery he will be better than Moose.
Pedro, who is twice the pitcher that Garcia is wasn’t even at full strength when he came back last year and it showed. You believe that Pedro who is more than a year removed from having shoulder surgery is good for 2 stints on the DL. How effective do you think Garcia will be less than a year removed from shoulder surgery. I’m sorry but I don’t see it.
are you saying that lon trost misremembered to tell us about the blocked bleacher seats?
“Ray-Any idea how hard hes throwing?”
As far as I know Freddy Garcia isn’t throwing at all. But it doesn’t matter how hard he’s thowing. Bartolo colon was supposedly throwing at 94MPH’s the other day and he got hammered. Garcia had his shoulder repaired last August. He won’t help anyone out this year.
“Sorry hmmm i hope you knew i was joking when i said Ralph Nadar.”
no worries, i knew you were joking.
“I don’t believe this for a second. When my firm went through a renovation I remember the architects brought renderings and perspectives from every angles imaginable.”
i don’t know. you may be right, but this also seems like something they could have possibly fixed had they caught it in time. why would they intentionally build such an obvious flaw?
yanks should offer the sox to pay colon’s salary as long as they promise to pitch him every series vs the yanks.
Y’s Guy,
Never been to Yankee stadium. Im in So Cal and have been to all 3 stadiums here. They all have the out of control fans sitting near you shouting cuss words non stop. San Diego the least of the 3. Mind you, I usually get good seats. I can only immagine what goes on in the nose bleed sections.
“why would they intentionally build such an obvious flaw?”
Because they decided it’s more important to generate revenue from a restaurant than to please fans sitting in bleachers. Sounds sad I know but quite possibly true.
“The Yanks say they didn’t realize the design flaw until it was too late and will install lots of TVs.”
It is my understanding the Yankee Son-in-law Felix Lopez is one of the people in charge of the Stadium project. Felix was a landscaper before he married into the Steinbrenner family. Now, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but what the heck does he know about stadium design other than how to make the grass grow?
Willis looks good from the box score. 3 IP 2H 3BB 0K. It’ll be interesting to see him against the Yankees. He’ll be forced to throw strikes to patient Yankees.
This Davidson/Gonzaga game is good. Tied again.
upper deck

yanks should offer the sox to pay colon’s salary as long as they promise to pitch him every series vs the yanks.
Double what their paying him if they promise to pitch him in every series.
American still hanging in there with the Vols.
sos, yeah but the same problems come up in the mall, at the movie theatre, in all of our schools, even over our airwaves. its not a problem that only comes up in baseball stadiums.
btw. love dodger stadium, like the big A (of anehiem) alot, despite the rockpile.
qualcom/murphy stadium was a dogtrack, possibly worse than shea
Come on Davidson!! Make my brackett worth looking at again.
I wonder how much a hot dog was in 1967.
upper deck,
Your right. Its everywhere but not their for 3 hours straight showting in your ear. Didnt like Dodger stadium much. There were more Reds fans than Dodger fans(Reminds me of Rays vs. Yanks in Tampa. But probably more violent)Even though the Reds were in last place that year. Like Anaheim and your right they need to get rid of those rocks. It looks like a Disneyland ride without the roller coaster. Qualcom. Well theres nicer minor league parks around than Qualcom.
its just a st game but 3bb/0K does not bode well for the d train imo.
Now this is interesting. Updated line score on Willis:
3.1 7 4 4 4 1 0 5.93
I have a feeling I should have picked Davidson
Andrea,
A hot dog in 1967 cost around .25 best reference I found in a quick ask.com search.
blue j’s 4-5-6 (barajas/watson/mcdonald) not really the quality dtrain will see in the junior circuit this year.
Hey yanksrule57
Sorry I didnt make it on Saturday.
Oops. Miner didn’t help the cause. Here’s D’s final line:
3.1 7 5 5 4 1 0 6.59
welcome to the a.l. dontrelle!
(you wanna make sure you keep your glove up on the follow-through!)
this Stephen Curry is gonna F’ w/ my bracket
“Because they decided it’s more important to generate revenue from a restaurant than to please fans sitting in bleachers. Sounds sad I know but quite possibly true.”
i do respect your opinion, since you seem to know more about architectural design than i do, but don’t you think the Yankees still could have had the restaurant without the design flaw?
the stadium is gigantic, what if they moved the restaurant back somewhat so it didn’t stick out into the bleachers?
i guess it’s hard for me to understand it fully until i see it.
Willis looked cooked to me last year. I know some were writing it off as lack of motivation because the Marlins stunk, but you can’t hide lack of a fastball for long.
I would really like to know what the radar gun says about him this year.
He might do ok initially until the AL gets used to his funky delivery. Also they look to have a great offense there this year which can hide pitching deficiencies in the RS (see NY Yankees circa 2001-2007).
damn you Dell for this hell spawn
Nice hustle play by Davidson. No hesitation on that 3. Of course it’s in Curry’s DNA.
Brandon, that’s why I don’t do brackets. Did anyone do the permutations to see what the odds of getting a perfect bracket are?
I am a proud picker of Davidson..
Also not so proud picker of Drake lol
Damn. Western Kentucky is letting the lead slip away. If st marys mounts a comeback and the other scores stick. I would be batting 1000 so far today.
my family has been getting partial season ticket plans the last few years so the ticket prices never urs treally bothered me, besides we are plenty happy just to be somewhere in the stadium seeing a Yankees game, doesn’t matter if it’s bleachers or tier reserved or what. this year, i will drive 1.5 hours to my parents’ house, meet up with whoever else in my family is going, drive 20 minutes to trenton, NJ, pay round trip fare on NJ Transit to Penn Station in midtown and ride 1.5 hours, get on the subway for another 30-40 minutes to the stadium and sit in the last row of the upper deck behind homeplate. i will make this roughly 4 hour journey this season probably close to a dozen times and it’s well worth it because there’s nothing like being at a Yankees game.

since i’v always sucked at the brackets i let LOHUD randomly pick for me with a 15% upset rate. so it came out with ucla winning the whole thing. i figure, ’sounds great to me’ and submit it.
only problem is, it was ucla-usc in the final. oh well.
“Willis looked cooked to me last year.”
Things could get very ugly for him this year. Not only does he have a change of leagues but he also has a change of ball parks to deal with.
Dolphin stadium last year was the third hardest park in all of the league to score in. Willis had a 5.17 ERA there.
Commerica isn’t a hitters park but it’s much less forgiving than where the Marlins play - it was the 13th hardest park to score in.
For Willis to even post a league average AL ERA this year he will have to be not just better than he was last year but much, much better.
Yankesrule57: and now they’re what? $4? $4.25.
but they’re Stadium hot dogs! how can you resist?
that Stephen Curry in a few years is going to be a special NBA shooter. Dell definitely did right w/ him. He’s smart enough to stay in school.
Brian,
Thanks for sharing that. I mean if there’s any possible way that I could see them play I’d do it. I think a lot of us would.
brian
im in philly, I drive to hoboken and take the path train to the #1. its great! dinner in the west village before a quick path trip and the drive home.
man Drake must subscribe to Antoine Walker’s How to shoot 4’s classes
Andrea,
It’s been so long I don’t remember how Yankee stadium hot dogs are although I WILL FIND OUT THIS YEAR! I do remember having a really good potato knish at the stadium back then, Anyone know if they still sell them?
Also Legends Field has really good kosher dogs (all beef) I ate two of them when I was at the game last week, delicious!

Simple solution sausY. Undo your mouse, get a new computer with virus protection. Hook your mouse back up.Problem solved. Ill stop posting till you get that handled now.lol
The 80 bucks a seat i am paying i am not so worried about this year it being the last year of the old ballpark. Its more of a sentimental thing why i am even making the trek from north carolina. I agree with everyone ticket brokers suck, stub hub sucks, Everyone should employ NC’s law that tix cant be sold for more than 3 dollars over face value. So the common fan doesnt get robbed. Next year is going to be much of the same with it being the first year of the new stadium but wait a couple years when the newness wears off and see what happens.
O.k i lied 15 more minutes.
Western Kentucky doing the best Belmont immitation.
Y’s Guy:
That sounds like a good trip. I’m in West Chester now, used to be in New Hope which is right on the Delaware River up in Bucks County, stones throw from Jersey. It’s close to Trenton so I’d just go there first then to Trenton, and go from there. it’s been working out the last couple of years.
This Drake game just shows how hard it is to hold a big lead. Tied at 88.
Yanksrule, you consumed 30 grams of fat in those two dogs alone!
need a chucker chances are Drake has the guy for you
sos, lol - it’s a work computer with virus protection. and i have one of the newest PCs in my group. I wonder how it’ll go over if i ask my boss for a new computer because certain blog posts crash IE on this one… “but i can’t get my work done”…
I’m no expert, but that Drake defender didn’t look set to me.
as for the restaurant blocking some of the view: i’m guessing it won’t be too bad. probably just a handful of seats and probably only a small corner of the outfield that can’t be seen. i’ve sat in some $5 seats with limited view in today’s stadium.
mel you gotta give them credit they chuck and hit
Tony,
Did they implement that law because of the demand for college basketball tickets? People are so honest, someone offered a pair of tickets for a Duke game to my parents and only asked for face value.
i imagine the Restaurant obstructed view seats will probably just limit your view of plays to deep center..which are alreayd kind of hard to see from the current bleachers anyway.
YanksRule: I believe the hot dogs at Yankee Stadium are kosher. I know for a fact the ones outside are. I don’t know anything about any knishes.
saucY,
The computer is a lemon(factory defect).I got your back. Let me know how it goes unless you get canned.
Solution to the bad seats in the new stadium. Have those designated for red sox fans only. Their used to not watching the back side of fan in front of them. Than the game itself.
hmmm,
I definitely am not an architecture pro at all, just having sat in some meetings to see how the architects present their plans. I think if it comes down to making money from the restaurant and pleasing bleacher fans, I wouldn’t get it pass the Yanks to choose the restaurant, given one of their reasons for building the new stadium is to increase concession opportunities. But you’re absolutely right, why can’t they do one without sacrificing the other? I wonder if it has something to do with choosing a location for the restaurant with the best foot traffic.
Brandon,
Is that a dig at my guy? You know better than that. And what gets me sick as that LBJ is getting MVP talk for doing what my guy did for the last 2 years. In a weaker conference. And they’re like 9 games over .500. They keep moving those MVP goalposts for my guy. Sorry, I kinda lost it there.
Maybe they didnt know they could get 3 bucks a ticket Mel. lol half the time i have a spare ticket and offer it to someone for free and offer to buy them dinner and no one will go haha. Most of the time in Charlotte if you want to go to anything you really shouldnt py for it because someone always has a free ticket to give Basketball, Baseball, Nascar, Hockey is the hardest ticket to get here lol.
are the hot dogs at Yankee Stadium all Nathan’s or are there some Hebrew National? because in the bleacher section the signs on the hotdog stands are HN but they taste like Nathans to me.
Sorry meant to say”their used to watching the back side of fan in front rather than the game itself.”
if you’re road tripping all the way into nyc for the yanks game, dont waste your money on crappy ballpark food, you are surrounded by one of the great ‘food cities’ of the world. from afghan to zimbabwean and everything in between, and if you’re a little tight, the best freakin pizza on the planet is available for 2 bucks every other block.
why are you fouling him it’s tied WKY
1,029%?
I wonder how much the cost of beer has gone up. It cost twelve bucks for a Foster’s oil can last year. I think a regular beer was 8.
I often go to games with a buddy who happens to be worth a few million bucks. We take turns buying tickets & beers so it evens out. We were going to get a round of hot dogs & beers at one game last year. Two dogs & two beers was around 25 bucks. Even HE says it’s way too expensive. We pass on it now, opting to down a few cold ones in a bar before & after the game.
In the new stadium I really hope the team will offer something remotely like the $5 ticket deal for the Bob Uecker seats at weeknight games. Those are the only games anyone of normal means can afford to buy a beer at. Someone in the front office please take note.
Note to self: Don’t decide to do thesis work during round one of the NCAA.
Ok with 5.7 left my drake pick perhapos is now looking ok lol
in order to make a high priced restaurant work in the middle of the outfield, the tables will have to be tiered so diners can watch the game. they cant start below ground level so they have to rise up to attract the richies from the lower deck all the way out to the outfield.
They’re not creating a food court for the bleacher creatures….
ok scratch that
WoW
gayle, this is why we don’t assume anything.
ranting guy, you’re going overboard now. $25 bucks for upper deck seats to a bb game is not exhorbitant. movies cost $10 and they suck. i worry that with too few cheap seats, the brokers will come to control all of them so that the $25 seat actually costs $79 to the guy who sits there.
Hibbert reminds me of Duncan w/ no jump shot
When will Sheffield say he wants a contract extension or feels underappreciated ?
Brandon we get you point, you hate the mets.
Bad afternoon in NCAA-land for me so far- 1-3 this afternoon.
Yankees to hold Fantasy Camp at Yankee Stadium
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601079&sid=aYJXIFJaoyKA&refer=amsports
I am very sure that will be a VERY pricey ticket
dollars spent on entertainment in general have exploded since 1967. think of what portion of your income you spend on computer, tv and music/radio. those costs didnt even exsist in 1967.
consider also that the yankees paid mickey mantle $100 grand that year.
Brian from PA -
At times some bleacher dogs are Shop-Rite brand.
i haven’t had a hot dog at the stadium in years… i like the sausage sandwiches though.
excellent sausage & peppers hero available at citizen’s paid-for-it park and if you’re fast you can usually make it between innings and not miss a pitch!
Wait. Shoprite sells hot dogs at yankee stadium?
Upper deck the genos steak sandwiches at crab fries at Citizens rock
Think about it - bring the wife and a couple kids, buy sodas and a hot dog or a pretzel for each, it’s easily over 100 bucks unless you get the $5 seats. A regular family guy can’t afford to bump that to $200 as easily as the people setting the prices can bump them.
It’s easy for a front office guy to claim that 25-buck seats is cheap, but fact of the matter is it’s getting less and less feasible as the number they arbitrarily define as ‘cheap’ creeps up.
Do you think the movie industry should claim ‘well a baseball game is $25 at the least, which is not exhorbinant, so a movie should cost the same price’.
Didn’t Ronald Reagan get trashed for saying something like ‘anybody with a hundred thousand dollars can afford to buy a house’ in the 80s? Sure Ronald you’re right … got a spare hundred grand laying around?
Yes, $10/ticket movies usually suck. That’s not a good reason for a $10 baseball game to no longer exist. For $10 you should expect something good. Like … maybe a baseball game.
Good point about brokers possibly sweeping them up, Y. I worry about the optimal number and price of cheap seats too. I don’t know what’s ideal.
We usually get the lower upper deck seats (good view actually) so it’s a 50 for each by the time you get a hot dog & a couple beers. Neither of us have kids (yet) so we can. A few games a year is fine for us. We would like to go more often but where do you draw the line?
Yeah!, I don’t hate them I just think they are what they are I don’t see a chmpionship or even an NL East title winner in them. Not w/ the offensive question marks soon half the team will be on social security and on the DL, the BP is really shaky and a closer who lets be honest is not lights out, they have issues past Maine and Johan
Love the crab fries!
Whoever owns the sausage stand knows how to hire ppl who can move sausages and cash quickly, something of a lost art.
i think yankee fans are gonna love how easy it will be to get a bite and go to the bathroom and not miss an inning. red sox fans, aside from limiting the team’s income are holding themselves hostage in a leaky boat by comparison.
This article isn’t completely correct. Tickets are 300-400 this year and were more than 150 last year. I am confused where he came up with the cost unless hes referring to the price season ticket holders recieve. When i sat behind home plate in 06 the tickets cost me 140 dollars.
Mel,
You must still be cheering for the guys in green (lol) cause they just swept through the Texas teams…last time that was done was in 2001!
if you’re always been kinda planning to go see wrigley field, you might need to make those plans for this summer. there is talk of a removation after this season.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/14033
lets consider the quality increase that accompanied that 1029% increase:
carl pavano makes 100 times what mickey mantle did.
All Boston fans should be charged double price at concession areas at the Stadium. It’s called an “envy” tax added on.
well…pavano did have a better year last year…bah dum bum…
There is nothing like watching a game in the House that Ruth Built. That’s the reason my wife & I travel 350 miles roundtrip from Massachusetts for every Saturday game.
I wasn’t pleased when the Yanks hit us with a 30% price increse this year for our Section 2 Tier Reserved seats. But at $27 they are still a good value for the enjoyment we get. We’ll just pack a lunch more often rather than buy concession food.
I have my fingers crossed that the Yankees won’t price working families out of the new ballpark. We’ll find out sometime during the season what our options are for the new Stadium. Until then, I’m going to focus my energy on rooting for what is,and always will be, America’s Team.
Sub Prime Mtg available for Yankee Box Seats
Big Apple Salute
You are right about us Boston fans being so envious of the Yankees. We would give anything to have finished second place in the AL east last year instead of sweeping the World Series. And yes I know all about the 26 World championships, but how many of the current Yankees were involved in any of those championships? Just off the top of my head I am guessing only 3 or 4….probably Jeter, Posada, Pettite, and Rivera.
ray
we werent talking about your team…
we were talking about your ballpark…the one that smells of urine in the main concorse. i hear they’re doing better with the rats than in the past.
when i went with my friend they told me not to drink too much b/c every trip to the mens room takes 20 minutes. how quaint.
“box seat cost at Yankee Stadium in 1967 cost $3.50.
Heck, I couldn’t afford the $3.50 way back then.
The bleachers at .75. were more my style, anyway.
The interesting thing would be if the Yankees collapse and have a run like they did from 1965 to 1974. What would happen to these ticket prices? A similar decline hasn’t lowered Knicks ticket prices and sales are down on slightly.
