Ensberg added to 40-man roster

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 21, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The Yankees tonight added Morgan Ensberg to the 40-man roster. He will make $1.75 million.

He has no options, so this mean that Ensberg is going to make the team. Now that he knows his status, Ensberg said his next move would be to get a new number. He does not want to wear 21. “I can’t wear Paul O’Neill’s number,” he said.

In a shocking move, Carl Pavano was placed on the 60-man disabled list for the fourth consecutive season. That has to be some kind of record. The Yankees also reassigned OF Justin Christian to the minor-league camp.

I am shocked!! Who is this guy Carl Pavano? And why is he always on the dl?

Congrats to Morgan, cool that he is changing his number. Shows that he has respect! :)

  2. Chris March 21st, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Surely Mike Hampton has been on the 60day dl more than Carl Pavano. Hampton is the original, pavano is just a cheap knockoff

  3. Frankie Yankee March 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Pavano’s living the High life. What a piece of work.

    1) Major props to Ensberg for asking for a new number. He just won himself another fan.

    2) Does Pavano think he’ll be able to get a legit starting job anywhere?

  6. gayle March 21st, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Good move by the Yanks I believe. I really like his comments about working with Kevin Long and how it has really helped him.

It’s going to be tough on Carl to have to spend more time on the DL.

Jen and John, you did see Pete’s post about the clubhouse boy that gave Pavano a shoebox from the trash, right?

I think that oughta tell you just how much persona non grata he is around the place.

  16. UtilityMan March 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm

I talked to Ensberg last Monday after the game against the REDSUX,and asked him what number he wants wear.He said he would ask Wilson Betemit for #14,because he wore that in Houston.I told him to buy Wilson a watch,in exchange.
Very nice guy…glad to hear he made it….Jason Lane if he accepts it,appears headed to Scranton/WB.

  17. Barry March 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm

does the addition of Morgan mean that the yankees will send down Shelly to start the season?

Carl P was at the Yankee Luncheon on WED in Tampa….and Yes I did get an autograph.

  19. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 21st, 2008 at 10:57 pm

so this addition means Brett’s not making the team unless there is a trade or the Yankees carry 11 pitchers

  20. CaptainsCorner March 21st, 2008 at 10:59 pm

So is the right handed hitting 1st baseman going to be Ensberg or Duncan? Then who will fill in at short and 2nd if they say Betemit can’t play it and Ensberg never has… Ensberg is not a good guy to sit on the bench for too long he will swing and miss too much.

  21. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 21st, 2008 at 10:59 pm

    Pique

I saw him take grounders there a few times this past week.
I would say in an extra inning game in which God forbid Jeets got hurt,he could play it.But then again they could just move A-Rod over to finish the game.

I heard the day, when the Yanks were playing the Pirates, that Mienkiewicz was possibly going to play 1b-3b and a little OF if he made the roster.

Hampton has been on the DL 8 times since being traded to the Braves and has not pitched in the ML since 2005. Not sure even Pavano has seen the DL that many times between the two of them they keep the Dl list busy on their own.

  59. whozat March 21st, 2008 at 11:36 pm

“Ensberg has only played 1 game in his career at SS and Betemit has only played 14 games at 2nd baseman. They have 2 3rd baseman out of position sounds alittle weird to me.”

The point is that Jeter, Cano and Arod play 150+ games a season. They have depth in AAA to cover in the event they need someone for multiple games. Ensberg has a track record over several years of mashing LHP at the major league level. Shelley was in the minors being bad for six years and has 34 games of MLB experience. You don’t cut that guy in favor of some light-hitting SS/2B because you’re worried about Betemit not being good enough to finish a game in which Cano or Jeter gets knocked out.

Ensberg should get the majority of the RH ABs at 1B, while Shelley spots in RF and comes off the bench.

Is it just me, or does Buchholz have an abnormally small head?

  61. CaptainsCorner March 21st, 2008 at 11:36 pm

The cheap Rays were interested in Ensberg because if Eva stays in the minors for the first 2 weeks of the season then his clock doesn’t start and they get him another year. They are pathetic…The announcers were actually trying to defend the cheap owners. They should be embarrassed if that is what they do.

Ensberg was very nice after the game against the REDSUX

  71. DC March 21st, 2008 at 11:45 pm

Ensberg: great guy + good spring doesn’t = another first baseman. Now no coverage for 2B or SS other than Betemit (Ensberg never played 2B and played SS twice (that’s minors and majors together.) Plus no pinch runner off the bench. We don’t need more of what we already have. The plan be to turn him into some draft picks or young talent otherwise I don’ get it.

  72. Fran March 21st, 2008 at 11:46 pm

In the 1st or 2nd series against Boston they will hit Jeter with a pitch on his hand like they always do and if he has to miss 4-5 games can Betemit play SS for a couple of days or cover for Cano if he was to miss a couple of days? He has lost weight but his defense is sometimes questionable.

  84. Fran March 21st, 2008 at 11:53 pm

  85. UtilityMan March 21st, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Ensberg being a “great guy” has nothing to do with him being another 1B on the team.
Yankees had until 12 midnight tonight to add him to 40 Man Roster….and if not…then either the Dodgers,Giants,Rays or someoneelse would have grabbed him.

I agree with having a speed guy for the bench…but right now it doesnt look like they will open up the season with one.

  97. Jerkface March 22nd, 2008 at 12:01 am

The Yankees, by having Ensberg, Duncan, Betemit, and Molina feature one of the best benches in the major league. The three of them can end games with one swing, Ensberg and Betemit will provide above average defense, and all of them can play multiple positions.

As has been said, Jeter, Cano, and A-rod will all play 150 games. Ensberg or Betemit will be a great backup at 3rd, Betemit will be servicable at short and second, and Duncan or Betemit will make a great 1st baseman. Duncan/Betemit is the best 1st base platoon, and Duncan can play RF or LF as well.

    Man I’m stoked about this.

    Oh

He has a fan club, so through the fan club I got a notice about it. There is one in Baltimore and one at YS. I already had tickets to the game in Baltimore and didn’t want to go thru the hassle of selling them. I have seen Mike like 6 times already. :)

Is anyone going to the games in Baltimore April 19 or 20? Anyone want to meet up?

  110. Andrea - anti-anti March 22nd, 2008 at 12:16 am

    Jen,

I’m going to the April Baltimore series and would love to meet up.

I’m staying at the closest Marriott to Camden.

I’m staying at the Marriott near the water. I think it is the Renaissance.

  119. Clare March 22nd, 2008 at 12:22 am

    Jen,

Have you been there before? I almost stayed at the Renaissance, but I won’t have a car, so I decided closer was better.

On a different subject, Ensberg was thrilled to be added to the 40 man roster. He had some great quotes, including:

“I can tell you that I’m a different player right now simply from working with Kevin Long. It’s that drastic,” Ensberg said. “I’m amazed and thankful that I’ve had a chance to play this long without knowing what the heck I’m doing. It’s a scary situation.”

  121. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 22nd, 2008 at 12:25 am

    Mike R: LMAO!

Jen: Can’t. If I could go anywhere that weekend, it would have to be to Florida, my grandmother’s invited the entire family for the first night of Passover, and I said no to that because of thesis and finals.

  122. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti March 22nd, 2008 at 12:25 am

Yeah. this is my 5-6 time. I’ve stayed at the Sheraton, Hampton Inn, and the Marriott that you are staying at. The Renaissance was the same price. Plus the Hampton Inn which is right across the street and a minimum stay of 3 nights. they said it was to accommodate all the Yankee fans. I told him it was bs. All you would need for 3 games is 2 nights. So that was struck off my list. I booked the room in January!! I was hoping they didn’t know the schedule yet and book rooms at rack rate. :( But they did. Last year I got the Hampton Inn for 150 a night, and people were checking in that day and paying 300!! For a Hampton Inn!!

  123. mel March 22nd, 2008 at 12:26 am

    Jennifer,

Don’t laugh! Wang got touched by A-Class Rays today. This quote from Wang is so classic: “Those kids swing at everything — high, low, inside, outside,” Wang said.

Another low seed bites the dust. Nova over Clemson.

  127. Clare March 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 am

    Jen,

How is the Marriott I’m staying at? I don’t think it’s too late for me to change it, especially, as you said, the Renaissance is the same rate.

    Thanks!

is anyone going to any of the games in Pittsburgh? I really want to go to one of those, but it’s on a weekday.

  129. Andrea - anti-anti March 22nd, 2008 at 12:30 am

Mike R: Thanks. Let’s hope those crazy Japanese bastards can pull it off!

ok maybe the players aren’t crazy, but the announcers are!

  130. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti March 22nd, 2008 at 12:31 am

It was nice, nothing really fancy. None of those hotels justify the 300 price tag that is on them.

A side note, two years ago when I went down I pulled off the highway and see all these kids dressed very strangely. I get to the hotel and ask them what the heck is going on. It was an animie convention. Some Yankee fans were brutal to them, it was pretty funny though. the next time was much better, it was a firefighters convention :)

  131. Clare March 22nd, 2008 at 12:32 am

    Andrea,

I really want to go to Pittsburg too (that sounds weird :) ), because that park is supposed to be amazing, but I really shouldn’t take off work. Of course, I may do it anyway.

  132. Clare March 22nd, 2008 at 12:35 am

    Thanks Jen!

I’ve stayed at some pretty bad Marriotts (i.e. downtown K.C., or the Detroit airport), so I’m glad to hear this isn’t one of them.

Well after the first round in the Lohoud brackets I am ranked 14th with 26 points not looking so good after thi lol.

I had Clemson going to the sweet 16, usc and St Joes to the Elite 8 so will lose some points there.

Have to say today was a MUCH better day for the tourney great games many coming down to the last seconds of the game and a few in OT

  137. Clare March 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 am

    Hey Utilityman!

Are you still in Tampa, or are you back up north? I’m really jealous that you got to go back down there.

  138. Brandon (Proud supporter of "Alex being Alex" ) (I slay the Anti) March 22nd, 2008 at 12:39 am

according to Mark Feinsand: With Ensberg seemingly on the roster, that means that Wilson Betemit may now have to beat out Cody Ransom, Nick Green and Chris Woodward for the spot. Betemit is a favorite of Brian Cashman, but don’t count out Ransom or Green in this race. Woodward is a great guy, but his hamstring injury last week didn’t help his cause.
    ————-

why do people say Betemit can’t play SS ? I haven’t noticed that he an’t play it

Fast forward to 2012 long retired former Yankee Carl “American Idol” Pavano is announced as the starting pitcher for Old Timers Day, as he leaves the dugout on his way to the mound he trips over the foul line dislocating his hip. Brian Cashman says he hopes Carl can rehab and be back in time for the 2025 Old Timers game.
