It’s official: Wang on Opening Day

Joe Girardi just announced what everybody knew would be the case: Chien-Ming Wang will be the Opening Day starter for the Yankees.

Wang was in line to start the opener last season when a hamstring injury derailed him and the job somehow fell to Carl Pavano. Talk about a bad omen.

CMW was 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA last season and has 38 wins the last two seasons, the most in baseball.

Wang threw in a Class A minor-league game today. He threw 60 of his 88 pitches for strikes. His line: 5.2 6 5 4 1 3.

Three of the hits and three of the runs came in the last inning. One of them was a pop-fly double that landed just inside the left field line.

To commemorate his valiant opening day start last year, is opening day going to be Carl Pavano free beer day?

    Think Positive.

I don’t know if anyone would be interested, but there are reports that Brian McNamee fainted while driving and crashed his car in NYC today.

No clue as to what would cause him to faint…

Carl Pavano will be the beer guy. Although I don’t think he’d be able to carry the box with the beer.

How have his teammates received him? Is anyone actually speaking to this thief?

kat I want to know how he could afford a Lexus when he can’t afford his apartment.

  6. Kat

Jen, I’d like to know that myself!!!

    Diabetes and it was yesterday.

    McNamee has a Lexus :?

it is still ironic he crashed on Good Friday

  9. murphydog

I hate to be this way, but just think how Team Clemens feels coming thisclose to being rid of McNamee.

It’s got to be like being one strike from a no-no in the ninth and giving up a bleeder.

  10. murphydog

McNamee’s accident was yesterday, and he fainted from diabetes.

  11. goofing on Pavano

It’s a good omen by itself not having Pavano on the mound for opening day. Then again, it’s good not to have him around at all.

  12. bogey

Pete, how many of those hits that the Wanger gave up were grounders that found holes? Holes that should disappear at the stadium with the grass and the slightly better than class A talent in the infield…

  13. CY Yang

Go Wanger! He deserves it! Hope he will finally have a 20+ wins this season!

  14. Jeff NJ

Man I hope today was an abberation for CMW. I get the feeling Wang will not lead the Yankees in wins this year.

  15. Mark Alan

I take it, then, that Pavano is hurt and can’t make the start this year. Oh, well. There’s always next year.

    Wait! No there isn’t!

  16. A-Point

Two thing about Wang’s efforts today. First, we don’t know what pitches he was using when he got touched up. Maybe working on other pitches to try for outs. Also, the double might not have been if there was better defense. Remember this was minor league ball.

Of course that doesn’t say much about the earlier efforts being good either.

If Wang can win 19 or 20 games and not be the wins leader of the club, that isn’t a bad thing. ;)

  17. McLovin

No HGH Pettitte for the opener why not.
