Rays-Yankees: The Live Blog

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 21, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Good evening and welcome to Legends Field. It’s 80 degrees and the Yankees are playing the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Kings of the Grapefruit League, the Rays are 14-4 behind hard-chargin’ Joe Maddon. The Yankees are 11-7-2 but have had a perfect week.

It will be Darrell Rasner against Andy Sonnanstine.

Meanwhile, what a terrible loss for UConn. The NCAA tournament makes it hard to find guys in the clubhouse for interviews. Everybody’s in the lounge watching games and tracking their pools.

FIRST INNING
Rasner put two runners on but worked out of trouble. Abreu (15 for 31 this spring) doubled with two outs but A-Rod grounded to second.

SECOND INNING
Rasner allowed a hit but got out of the inning. The Yankees went in order.

THIRD INNING
Rasner looked sharp. Still no score.

FOURTH INNING
Nothing doing for either team. Still no score. Mariano Rivera coming on to pitch for the Yankees.

FIFTH INNING
Line for Rasner: 4 2 0 0 1 4 68 pitches / 49 strikes. Pretty damn good. He’s making his case for long man. You have to figure it’ll be Rasner or Jeff Karstens with Kei Igawa starting for Scranton. Mo allowed an infield hit and that was it.

SIXTH INNING
This is the most tedious spring training game ever. No score after six, each team with three hits and soon it will be all minors leaguers in the game. Sorry for the lack of updates but I’m writing for the newspaper tomorrow, watching the game and keeping track of the NCAA tournament scores. Wow, does Carolina look good.

EIGHTH INNING
New Yankees lineup:
Duncan
Lane
Ransom
Porter
Castro
Ensberg
Molina
Cabrera

Yankees always have trouble with Sonnanstine, for some reason. This should be interesting.

Pete, you’re an awesome reporter, but I have no sympathies for a UConn junkie :-p

Yep, game audio. I’m listening right now. Unfortunately/Fortunately, it’s the away game feed.

Joe Maddon is lying through his teeth on the Rays pregame show.

How is he saying that Evan Longoria hasn’t done enough to warrant a spot in the major leagues? Mr. Blood and Guts baseball is blatantly lying.

Longoria is one of the top 3 prospects in baseball. He has nothing left to prove in the minors at all. He’s had a fantastic spring both offensively and defensively. Everybody has been raving about him in Florida.

The rays are going to give him the third base job because they’re cheap. They don’t want him accumulating major league service time.

Nothing to do with his ability. Purely financial.

Joe Maddon with more honest baseball talk. He’s definitely approaches the game “like they used to” – honest, tough baseball.

  7. CB March 21st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Meant to write the rays aren’t going to give him the third bas e job…

  8. Elizabeth March 21st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

The national anthem singer is apparently auditioning to be on American Idol. Lovely vocalization. /sarcasm

For Longoria’s sake, I hope another team can wrangle him away.

  9. Joe from Long Island March 21st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Pete, you never told us about your dinner with Matsui (sounds like the title to a play). Have a good time? Any juicy tidbits you can share?

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 21st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Too bad we have a first basemen :-P

And I dunno about you guyses, but I like Shelley at first.

  11. Elizabeth March 21st, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Tricky infield single. I wonder if Cano’s so used to having to range far to his right to field balls up the middle that he just does that on instinct or if it were really his ball.

Nice to hear Giambi dropped it, though. He is so inconsistent over there.

  14. Elizabeth March 21st, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    John–that was my thinking. :)

  15. Doreen March 21st, 2008 at 7:22 pm

    CB,

I think that’s one of the reasons why, no matter how much people talk about how the Rays could contend, they will never be a serious conender.

And what a waste of all those high draft picks!

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 21st, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    I mean third baseman.

    My neurons are fried.

  17. Elizabeth March 21st, 2008 at 7:25 pm

    I knew what you meant. ;) Hmm…Alex Rodriguez, Evan Longoria. It’s a toss-up, really.

  18. mird March 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Pretty messy, but Rasner got out of it

  19. Ranting Guy (no whining) March 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm

    Pete –

Is that advertisement really for a book written by none other than the immortal Mike LaPuke-a?

    Pulitzer material no doubt.

What’s next, Mike and the Mad Dog’s modern interpretation of Shakespaere’s plays?

  20. CB March 21st, 2008 at 7:31 pm

    Doreen,

I agree. The Longoria thing is so ridiculous because they keep saying that this is the year they are going to finally be serious and win. I understand that they don’t have a lot of money and preventing Longoria from becoming a super 2 player and delaying his free agency is a big deal to them down the line – but it sends such a bad message.

He’s played great – it’s obvious that money is the only reason he’s not going to be on the roster. And he has to listen to the manager just lie to the public that obviously?

Longoria could become the face of their franchise – their David Wright. And this is the way their trying to establish their relationship with him?

That said I think you have to look at the Rays differently since that first owner Vince Naimoli sold the team and after.

They’ve been a different franchise since Stuart Sternberg took over.

They’ve actually done a great job with their picks – we’ll see if they ever get any value from them at the major league level.

  21. Motown Yankees Fan March 21st, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Well, I’m just glad I didn’t draft Longoria in my fantasy draft.

I have Hughes and Chamberlain and I’m considering picking Kennedy next. Does that make me too much of a homer?

  22. Andrea - anti-anti March 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm

The Rays are keeping Longoria in the minors so that they can keep him away from arbitration for another year.

    They’re cheap.

I wish I could watch this. This audio sucks.

  23. Doreen March 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm

    CB,

What good are the picks if you’re not going to use them? What if the only goal is to not lose money? What if the goal is to keep getting good picks – keeping them away from other teams, keeping payroll low?

  24. whozat March 21st, 2008 at 7:35 pm

“Pete, you never told us about your dinner with Matsui (sounds like the title to a play). Have a good time? Any juicy tidbits you can share?”

I think, if I remember correctly, that part of the deal with the dinner is that it’s off the record. So it’s more relaxed and stuff. I mean, the original point was for Matsui to get to know the NY press…he couldn’t have done that if he was going to be on the record all night, you know?

  25. whozat March 21st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

“What good are the picks if you’re not going to use them? ”

They are going to use them. I mean, they’re going to skip what…two months of Longoria. They’re not going to contend this year anyway. He’ll still be a part of their potential contending 2010 club, most likely.

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 21st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Motown: I have Hughes and Joba! I nearly picked up Longoria, but I would have had to lose my utility man.

  27. Doreen March 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm

    whozat -

I know, you’re probably right. It just SEEMS like Tampa is more interested in saving money than putting a contending club on the field. Not that they wouldn’t welcome a contending club if it should happen, but it sure seems more like a passive thing than, say, the Yankees or Red Sox.

  28. Motown Yankees Fan March 21st, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Rebecca – I guess that makes me feel like less of a homer! I’ll have to see if Kennedy lasts until my next pick. Our league has a number of Mets and Red Sox fans, so I may be OK.

  29. CB March 21st, 2008 at 7:42 pm

    Doreen,

I agree. The Longoria thing is embarrassing. The left side of their infield in triple A will be better than their major league starting lineup.

It sends a bad message to the waves of talent they have in the minors. It tells all of them that they are going to only make the show when its financially optimal for the club and not based on their play.

Why should Tampa bring him up at any point all year? They aren’t going to contend. If they keep him in triple A until next May they’ll push back his service time a full 2 years.

“but it sure seems more like a passive thing than, say, the Yankees or Red Sox.”

Well, the don’t have the resources of a club like that.

I dunno…the Longoria thing sends a bad message to the guys in the minors and to the fans. It also makes sense if, three years from now, they’re spending the extra salary room they’re creating right now on the finishing pieces to a team that might actually DO something. Of course, I have no way of knowing right now if that’s what they’re going to do.

Jon Heyman had one of the great trade stories/ rumors of the year in his column today.

Heyman’s is saying that when the yankees asked the A’s about Joe Blanton Beane asked for Joba and Phil in return.

That’s right – not one. But both.

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 21st, 2008 at 7:53 pm

CB, I like this bit from the article:

” It’s a stretch to call the Red Sox’s 66-minute strike heroic. It’s nice that they worked to get the pay of coaches boosted from $20,000 for the Japan trip. But why did the players have to be given a $40,000 bonus to go to Japan in the first place? And why didn’t they just consider sharing the extra money with the lower-paid coaches? It should be considered an honor to go to Japan to play, not to mention part of the job description.

  36. rip rizzuto March 21st, 2008 at 7:54 pm

I also ALWAYS listen to the opposing team’s radio feed (except the White Sox — they’re the only one worse than the Yanks’). I wonder whether they know how many of us can’t stand the Yankees broadcasters…

CB – Wonder what the price would be if another team inquired about Blanton?

  40. Ranting Guy March 21st, 2008 at 7:57 pm

What are the chances of Tampa attempting to do what Florida did a couple times?

That would be – Field a short-term contender (or a winner) they can hardly afford given their miniscule fan base, reap the profits of a big season, dump or trade off the parts, then coast financially by paying guys barely fit for a sandlot team virtually the minimum salary for a few years.

This division and this league might make that more difficult than it was for Florida, so I don’t see it happening for a looooooong time unless they become front office geniuses, shell out lots of coin, the other 4 AL East teams make collectively a grotesque series of bad moves, and Maddon doesn’t burn his team out by June of any given season.

  41. Joe from Long Island March 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I know that the Matsui dinner is off the record; I was just wondering if Pete could share any off-the-record tidbits with us. You never know…

I would say harping on the Longoria situation is beating a dead horse…But the Rays deserve to be beaten, for that and for other reasons.

Either Billy Beane was not serious in asking for both Joba and Phil, or he’s not as smart as he’s cracked up to be. If Cash wasn’t trading Phil for Santana, he sure as heck wasn’t doing that deal. And since I think Billy Beane is a smart guy, at least in baseball matters, there must have been something else to it.

  43. mel March 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Gosh, Tampa can’t do anything right. I saw Pena’s K on Gameday long before their crew called it.

  44. CB March 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Alan Horne pitched today in the AAA game today against the Rays triple A squad (which is a very good team that also had two major leaguers on it getting some swings).

Horne was fantastic. Chad Jennings the AAA beat reporter said it was the best he’s seen any pitcher look this spring. Jennings is a very good source and he doesn’t say things like that willy nilly.

Horne had a strange season last year – it was almost two seasons as he tired a great deal down the stretch and all of his numbers took a sharp dive.

Horne has talent. If he throws well he could get called up quickly – he’s not far from the majors. If Karstens, Rasner, etc don’t pitch well as long relievers Horne could get the call.

Mr. Flip, how the F- do you do that?

  46. Ranting Guy March 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm

    Blanton …

For NY wouldn’t that be trading down if even any one of the 3 prodigal sons were involed? That’s not based on last year’s performances & before. I’m thinking what the next 3 years (at least) would be like.

To look at it the other way would be sort of like paying Randy Johnson a gazillion dollars a year based on the pitcher he used to be when he was killing the whole league.

I said a while ago that the Longoria situation would be a good test for the Rays management. I had hoped that they would send a message to the fans and to their players that things were different and keep Longoria in MLB to start the season.
Alas, new name, new uniforms, same old Rays.

I spend a lot of time in the Tampa area so I want them to be interesting since every game is on tv down there.

Maddon can’t come out and say what is really going on.
However, it strains credulity to believe that Manny Aybar is the answer for 3rd base for them.
Longoria will be back up by June if not sooner and he will be at 3rd for them from then on for as long as they can keep him.

Blanton is nothing more than a league average pitcher. Both Joba and Phil will be better than him this year.

The reason why the yankees have spent so much time and money developing young talent is so that they don’t need to overpay for arms like Blanton because they are desperate.

Beane asks every team for their 1-3 best prospects in every trade no matter what he’s giving up. I don’t know who’s going to bight on Blanton but it won’t be pretty.

I can only imagine what he wants for Huston Street.

  54. Jay March 21st, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Blanton isn’t worth Ian, Phil or Joba, but it wouldn’t be flushing the prospects down the toilet, either. You’re going to get 200/200+ innings of above-league-average pitching from Blaton, which is nothing to sneeze at. And Blanton is only 27, so I don’t see why his next three years means any doom and gloom. I wouldn’t trade for him, but you can see why he’s attractive to the Yanks with all the questions marks they have.

Blaton really isn’t an above average league pitcher.

His stats are very misleading. He plays in a home ballpark that has more foul territory than any park in baseball. Its why his splits are so drastic.

If he pitched in the AL East, he would get lit up.

    He’s not that good.

He isn’t worth giving up Alan Horne and Dan McCutcheon. Let alone Joba and Phil.

These are the guys the Yankees will no longer persue in an attempt to upgrade their staff. They will simply pull from within because the talent is there.

I wouldn’t give up a good prospect, either. I don’t want anything to do with Blanton. But even if he’s JUST league average (you have to give him at least that) then he’s still someone who’s going to give you 200 innings, which teams are desperate for. So he does have some value — as a good fourth or fifth starter. My only point before was that he’s not totally without value. But he’s not worth a good prospect, that’s for sure.

I agree with that completely. I like minor league baseball and the amount of talent they have is hard to get over.

    But to what end.

And they have the first pick in the draft this year. Pedro Alvarez is considered by many to be the best college hitter since Mark Texeira. They could play him at first and have longoria at the other corner.

    They could, they could….

What the Rays are doing with Longoria is a joke.

Its why, despite all the chest puffing they did this spring, nobody will take that organization seriously.

My take on the Red Sox situation is, I think its a standup thing to go to bat for their coaches and support personnel.

I think its a joke that MLB tried to hose those guys out of their stipends.

They have been cutting back on both teams since this deal was made. From limited tickets and airline space for family and friends to the coaching flap.

Oakland has no stick so a boycott by the A’s would mean nothing. The Sox had to do it to get their points across.

BTW, I still don’t think the solution is a fair one but, at least there is a solution.

MLB will spend more in private jet costs than it would have spent to just do what they agreed to do when the trip was booked.

Just another embarrassing episode in the reign of terror of Bud Selig.

Curiously how has Pena done this spring.

And another curious question. I was wondering how do American players do when they go and play in Japan (since everyone seems to agree that Japanese pitchers aren’t that great).

  104. SJ44 March 21st, 2008 at 8:39 pm

    Rebecca,

The Yankees got a pool of money from MLB for the coaches and support personnel.

The players held a vote and it was determined to distribute the money equally among the coaches and support personnel going on the trip.

Part of the problem with the Red Sox-A’s situation was, the money was a moving target. Nobody told the teams until the other day the final number. That number was the not the number originally agreed upon by the player reps and players from both teams.

The whole thing is an embarrassment for MLB. They are swimming in money, will spend a ton of it during this trip, and they just decided to strongarm the little people on the trip.

Coaches and support personnel don’t make a lot of money. Its not up to the players to pay them. Those guys are employed by teams under the MLB umbrella.

Its amazing to me MLB thought they could get away with it.

    I’m glad they didn’t.

I got turned onto this organization last year wih Pete posted a link for the Johnny Damon HR club and they really do do great thins.

The auction is over at Ebay link below and just click on the ones with the CHF logo. Yes they wil get pricey but at least the money is going to a good cause and is tax deductible.

On March 31, 2008, the New York Yankees will play their final opening day game in the historic Yankee Stadium and you could win tickets! The Children’s Health Fund (CHF) is auctioning off a total of 4 opening day field-level box seat tickets with 2 tickets in each auction on eBay. This auction will benefit our programs that deliver health care to thousands of poor and homeless children across America.

well, we think that pitchers who dominate in the minors will be amazing in MLB.

The thing that seems different to me is that, either due to the strike zone or the balls or the batters not having as much power or swinging more or SOMETHING, low walk rates over there don’t seem to translate over here. Igawa and Matsuzaka BOTH walked very few guys in Japan. And they come here and both have control problems.

    DAve,

Its relative to the industry they work in. Its not about what its like in regular, non-professional sports jobs.

Its money that was promised to them as a condition for the players voting to go on this trip. Then, it began to be systematically reduced.

Its not like Bud Selig and MLB’s travel party are reducing their expenses. Its all private airfare and 5 star hotels for them.

If MLB just lived up to the terms of the deal, this stuff wouldn’t have hit the fan.

  136. yanksrule57 March 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

    SJ44,

    Thanks.
I don’t know of any CEO as incompetent as Bud that not only gets to keep his job, but gets a multi-million dollar contract extension. I guess if you only look at popularity and revenues then by that measure he is successful. But the lack of leadership is appalling. Gayle, that’s awesome.

I’m…765. But, I have all my final fours, elite eights and fourteen of my sweet sixteens.

As a UConn alum all I can say at this point is…. let the Yankee season begin. March 31st can’t come soon enough.

I knew he’d make it, Morgan the first name of my great great grandfather who came to America from County Tipperary, Ireland in 1838. This a good move that will pay dividends for the Yankees in 2008.

Some of you know that I am a Red Sox fan. However, I have never been to a game at Yankee stadium and would like to this year before it no longer exists. I suspect that Yankee/Red Sox tickets are hard to get, but do any of you have any advice on how to get tickets to some other game. Should I just go to Yankees.com?

Go to Yankees.com if you want to pay face. If you don’t care what you pay hit craigslist or stubhub.
