My brackets are a huge mess

Peter Abraham
March

ncaalogo.jpgI’m a disgrace to NCAA brackets humanity. After a 23-9 first round, I was 10-6 in the second round and sit in 247th place in the contest being run by The Journal News.

Good idea, putting Pitt in the Final Four.

As for the Sweet 16, there are some compelling games. Louisville-Tennessee should be a great game along with Texas-Stanford. I’m also eager to see Xavier-West Virginia.

Memphis is a fraud. They can’t shoot free throws and they don’t play very smart. If Michigan State doesn’t expose them, somebody will eventually.

It’s hard not to see North Carolina, Kansas and UCLA moving on to the Elite Eight.

I still like Carolina winning it all. They’re so efficient offensively and physical on defense.

Hey, I’m breathing down your neck at #516 :0 I guess it shows that I know nothing about NCAA hoops (went to a Div.III school and all). Amazing to see all the upsets though.

  2. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Western Virgina’s Joe Alexander and Davidson’s Stephon Curry have absolutely 1 -2 ‘d my bracket  yesterday Brook Lopez took one of my final fours today it was Curry I hate these brackets all I have left is UCLA and UNC and something tells me Curry might have a little giant killer in him. If I would have been placing money bets a bookie would have cracked my legs by now :(

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I go to a DI school and I’m in LAST in most of my pools.

  4. as2008

Totally off subject but do you think they will make cuts tomorrow? if so who? Will they go down just to the starters or will they leave some of the other guys up to give the starters a breather at the end of the game?

  5. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

as2008 I expect cuts tomorrow I really do

  6. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

It only took me TWO hours to get home from LI. Normally the trip is a little over an hour!! UGH!!

  7. PAT M.

The Tar Heals and thier run up the score will get out muscled and fall to UCLA…..Hansbrough will need help vs. Kevin Love….Also the Briuns have the best backcourt in College Ball……Watch Roy Williams pull his starters after they reached 100…..Bush league…..

  8. RayBlay

not that I know ANYTHING when I’m filling out my bracket, but I picked a UConn-Georgetown final.. all I can do now is laugh

  9. Boston Dave

this was the first year where i put in almost no thought into my bracket and its probably my best ever. 39 out of 48 and 7 of my elite 8’s left.

    ucla is gonna take it.

  10. Catherine

V for Villanova, V for Victory!

I am rooting for my Wildcats! LETS GO NOVA!

Who is pitching tomorrow? Is it Hughes? And will he start Vs the Phillies or will it be a minor league game?

  12. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

    GO BRUINS !! :D

  13. J.F.K. (The Movie)

I hate basketball, football, an hockey.

  14. Marc from Portland

I’m with you J.F.K. I just want the real season to start.

  15. UtilityMan

Hughes pitching tommorrow versus Phillies at Home.
Game is on WCBS 880…..but no YES TV coverage.

  16. UtilityMan

    Gametime is 7:15 PM

  17. Matty

    Brandon -

“Western” Virginia? You better respect. And it wasn’t just Alexander that was killing your bracket…

  18. Matty

(and as Rebecca can attest, I think I’m one of the few WVU fans on this blog. Let’s goooooooo, MOUNTAINEERS!)

  19. UtilityMan

I dont watch College Basketball…but I do check the newspaper to see whats going on with The Tarheels….Back in 1989 I bought a car from some guy that went to school there, had personalized license plates that said NC HEEL,and had one of thoose college car window stickers on the back window.

I still own that car,and soon I will have Antique Personalized Plates that will read M CAIRO!!!

  20. Catherine

    VILLANOVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

well that explains it, no offense Matty but West Virginia aka WVU should not have beaten Arizona, IDK how they slept playing that game I’ll give Alexander, Mazzulo and Ruoff thier credit they play w/ alot of heart and smarts credit also to Huggins, but UCLA is more hungry and will step on anyone that gets in their way.

  22. Jesse

I haven’t seen but about a half dozen teams that deserve to be playing for the national championship in this current field. And to think there are some people who feel that the field should be expanded to 128 teams. Ha!

I am not saying that the best 65 teams in the country are in this field, but I hardly think we need to add another 63 teams to what is already a pretty mediocre field.

There must be a better way to choose a field that would give the #1 seeds a run for their money and add more genuine suspense to the whole tournament.

  23. Ray

How do you check the brackets we turned in?

  24. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Rangers Close To Signing John Patterson

“MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan says the Rangers are close to a deal with John Patterson. The match makes sense for both parties. Patterson is from Texas and will remain in a low-pressure environment. The Rangers add some depth with no risk and decent upside. He’ll head to Triple A and try to regain his strength and velocity.”

I guess Nolan Ryan sees something he likes

  25. Buddy Biancalana

    Where’s mel?

    Great game going on: Lakers-Warrior

Golden State up by 4 under a minute to go

  26. Buddy Biancalana

    Lakers are done!

  27. Khoa

    HOOKEM!

  28. anthony

lakers arent done lol .. best team in the west

  29. Buddy Biancalana

    They are done for tonight.

  30. mel

    Buddy,

I’m here. Hit me with your best shot!

  31. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Lakers are nowhere nearly as done as the Nets.

And with that and another highly unsuccessful day at thesis writing, I’m gonna call it a night.

  32. mel

Someone was asking for real baseball? 6 am EST on Tuesday March 25th. Boston @ Oakland.

    1 day 5 hr 38 min 57 sec

  33. Jack Knight

If Manhattan College had made it I would have had to put them. Lucky for me they didn’t and my bracket is actually decent. I had MSU beating Pitt.

  34. Vince

I had the West kentucky upset, I had both ‘Nova wins, and I had west virginia over duke. I have 6 of my 8 elite 8’s and my one absolute flaw is going to cost me everything. Pitt in the final.

I had stanford winning too, and knew ND would lose. I hate NCAA brackets.

  35. mel

Pitt’s a good team, but why’d everyone here put them in the Final Four? Is it a Big East thing?

  36. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Rebecca you realize if the Nets miss the playoffs

    you could land

    OJ Mayo
    Chris Douglas Roberts
    Hasheem Thabeet
    Roy Hibbert
    Deandre Jordan if he falls
    Donte Greene
    Russel Westbrook

even w/ that Dallas gave you a 2011 unprotected w/ an aging team a BIG NO NO IMO

  37. mel

    Matchups in Tokyo:

    Matsuzaka/Blanton
    Lester/Harden

Does that mean that Blanton’s their ace now?

  38. Vince

pitt just looked big and tough and the big east traditionally has teams that open eyes in the tournament. And their region didn’t impress me, I had no idea Mich State would be this good.

  39. Vince

I think Harden is the ace if he stays healthy, which he won’t. Blanton is all they have to offer whether he’s an ace or not, and he will be gone by the end of the season.

  40. Jack Knight

Oh and I have MSU in the Final Four. UNC, UCLA, MSU, WISC Final Four. UNC takes it all.

  41. Rubin

Well, Pete. I am probably in worst shape, in my pool with my friends. For me to at least have a decent shot, I need Kansas and Wisconsin to both lose before the Final Four. Which means, I need one of Villanova and Davidson to make the Final Four. Thank you Georgetown, I blame you for the shape im in now.

Oh Pete, I also had UNC winning it all.

Im also cheering for West Virginia, as I am a huge Bobby Huggins fan. Stupid Cincinnati for firing him. I hope that dumb president realizes we wouldve had the best team this year with Huggins. Especially when we had a verbal from OJ Mayo, Michael Beasley and Billy Walker if Huggins was still there. Now, put that ontop of Devan Downey and Denota Vaughn(who Huggins probably wouldve gotten as well-but hes here anyway). Thats easily the tourny favorite, IMO. Yep, I can only imagine how good we would have been…

  42. Skippy

I also had Pitt in my Final Four. It started out with underrating MSU and then just rolled on from there. When you fill out these brackets, you often make one decision that seems to make sense then find yourself kind of trapped as you don’t know when to get off a certain team.

Brandon, I am glad about the Nets draft. That trade is looking worse and worse for the Mavs. I don’t want Hibbert (yeah, he’s big, but that’s about it), but in Rod we trust, I think they’ll pick up some worthwhile pieces.

  43. Eric J

    Pete,

Love your coverage of the pinstripes!

Don’t feel bad about your brackets. I had Pitt winning it.

And I’m kind of a big deal with middle school basketball here in Loveland, CO. :-)

  44. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

Only 7 days and 11 hours left until the opening pitch.

    But, hey..who is counting.

  45. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    Rollie Massimino

  46. Dan

It seems like every year, Pitt gets hyped up as a Final Four contender going into the tournament because of their “tough defense” and whatnot. Then they always get knocked out before the regional finals.
I stopped buying into the hype a long time ago.

  47. Yeah!!

Countdown, I thought the opening pitch was tomorrow between redsux and Oakland. Oh I forgot, that don’t count.

  48. J-Dawg--Veintisiete en '08, Chasing Greatness!

Memphis a fraud? I don’t think so! We haven’t been hitting our free throws for the last three years, and it hasn’t cost us yet. And we haven’t played our A game yet. We’re saving it up for the right time. Our “A Game” is good enough to beat anyone, including North Carolina or UCLA. Go Tigers!!

  49. Dustin Ingalls

“Watch Roy Williams pull his starters after they reached 100…..Bush league…..”

Bush league? How about giving the third-stringers a chance to play in the NCAA tournament they’ll remember for the rest of their lives? They’re hard-working players the fans love to see get some action when they can. If the team is so good they dominate the entire 40 minutes, why not rest the starters and give the others a few minutes of playing time? That’s what Roy’s always done, and it’s classy.

Memphis is highly overrated; I’ve thought so all season. And UCLA won’t be able to hold a candle to Carolina if they barely beat A&M. In fact, no one will be able to hold a candle to us. Holding back? Not playing your A game? Yeah right. Great excuse for poor play. No coach in his right mind would have his team hold back in the NCAA tournament. Every game could be your last. And for Memphis, that will come against MSU (I had Pitt beating MSU and Memphis, but that was dashed) if not Texas. UCLA will beat WV (who will beat Xavier) but will struggle all along the way, finally losing to Texas, who will lose handily to UNC in the final. It’s going to be either Kansas or Wisconsin in the other region.

  50. Christine

I’m another one rooting for Villanova. Since Syracuse needs another year with the injuries and inexperience, it’s great to see another Big East team still in it. I am not sure what West Virginia or Louisville will do.

While I would rather see Syracuse, you can’t ignore Scottie Reynolds and the rest of the Wildcats.

    Go Villanova!

  51. saucY

    georgetown was robbed. terrible officiating.

  52. vtyankeefan

I picked Davidson to beat Gtown. I went up over 300 places after that game.
