What’s the oldest someone’s ever pitched? Moyer’s gotta be close to the mark, no? He probably started pitching before I was born.
Why was Matsui scratched from the lineup?
June 6, 1986
Matsui bumped because of Damon?
I think Satchel Paige has Moyer beat by a long shot, agewise.
Dang that’s close! I was born April 12 1986!
Clemens was pretty old last year…
I hope Hughes has a good game today. We’re getting close to starting the season. It wouldnt hurt having a couple of good outings prior.
Becca,
I was born on April 12th as well!
isn’t el duque 63?
From the last thread we were discussing the mets pitching woes…
The Mets should have signed Kyle Lohse on a one year deal to fill their #5 role. El Duque looks done. Pelfrey stinks. Oh well.
Mets picked Mike Pelfrey #9 in 2005. Next three guys off the board - Cameron Maybin, Andrew McCutcheon and Jay Bruce.
That hurts.
When does this game start?
“I wasn’t born, so much as I fell out.”
Name that song, Pete! (Hint: The album is called London Calling.)
S.o.S: No kidding, really?
Isn’t it the best birthday in the world?
“Mets picked Mike Pelfrey #9 in 2005. Next three guys off the board - Cameron Maybin, Andrew McCutcheon and Jay Bruce.”
That does hurt.
CB, I read your comment and grimaced. That’s absolutely painful.
Of course, the Mets aren’t exactly known for making wise decisions regarding their youth.
I know I should know this but is moyer a lefty?
I’m almost glad the game’s not on TV (key word: almost) only because Nets are at Knicks tonight and there’s no way I’m not watching.
Game starts at 7:15.
is this game gonna be on internet radio at all?
I’ve never liked Pelfry.
I wish I coult watch this game.
Satchel Paige threw 1 inning for KC at age 58.
That mets draft always cracked me up.
Yankees lost out when that year when they took CJ Henry at 17 and Colby Rasmus went 28. Nothing you can do about that. It happens with high school guys. No one thought Rasmus would be so good.
They made up for it with Jackson in round 8.
But for the mets that’s just bad. Next three guys right after Pelfrey are that trio.
Just like when they took Phil Humber in 2004 at #4 and the yankees took Hughes #23 that year.
Mike Eff - Moyer is indeed a lefty
Oh wow! I completley forgot about Satchel! Shows what I know…
Some news from nj.com…Damon has the flu so that is why he isn’t playing, and Andy’s back was still bad today and he could not complete his delivery. He will try again on Wednesday and if it is not better by then he will most likely miss his first start the season.
Canseco’s pretty old. Oh, you’re talking majors. Never mind.
Rebecca & gayle from last thread. Shields (LAA) and Janssen (TOR). Janssen’s out for the season.
CB,
I think what makes me grimace more than that is trading away Kazmir. If i were a Mets fan that would haunt me daily.
rebecca,
Yes its the best birthday but now i have a twin out there that will be taking half the attention i get that day.lol
And you know how much i love getting attention.
thank you SWO
Canseco’s pretty old. Oh, you’re talking majors. Never mind.
Is he still trying to make a comeback with some Long Beach team?
“I think what makes me grimace more than that is trading away Kazmir.”
No contest that wins hand down. That looks like it’s going to be one of the all time great awful trades. Not quite AJ Pirzenski (sp?) for Nathan/ Liriano/ Bonser but its got a place on the medal stand for terrible moves.
Kazmir was baseball america’s 8th best prospect that year (second best pitching arm to Edwin Jackson). Hard to find any top 10 prospect arms that have gotten traded like that and for so little.
The Kazmir thing wasn’t even like Liriano where people didn’t think he was a great prospect. He highly regarded. But Rick Peterson thought he was such a great pitching coach that he knew Kazmir would burn out his shoulder due to poor mechanics…
mel: Thanks
S.o.S: Hah, see, my brother’s birthday is 11 April so I’ve never been completely alone.
Guys: what’s the over/under on how often Kay mentions the Leiter-Kazmir-music thing?
Rebecca,
What Leiter/Kazmir/music thing?
And do you already know who’s in the booth?
CB,
O.k. lets say Patterson thought he would blow out his arm. Why trade him for a pitcher that walks as many guys as Zambrano. If he was rated that high and he’s a lefty. Youd think they could have gotten a much better return. Goes to show you that the best trades sometimes are the ones you dont do. HUGHES.
Phil Niekro made 26 starts at the age of 48 in 1987
mel: the one about Leiter asking for Kazmir to be traded because he changed the music in the CD player.
And no, I don’t.
The Neikros have to be the oldest combined age for brothers ever to play in the bigs.
from espn spring training blog:
PETTITTE THROWS ON LEVEL GROUND (4:42 p.m. ET)
Andy Pettitte made 47 throws on level ground Monday, two days after the Yankees left-hander was scratched from a scheduled start due to lower back spasms.
Pettitte threw for five minutes on a back field with pitching coaching Dave Eiland.
“It’s still tight,” Pettitte said. “There’s still a little pull back there when I try to get out over my front side. So we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”
Pettitte could throw off a mound Wednesday or Thursday. He currently is slated to make his first regular-season start April 2 against Toronto, but he might be pushed back.
The Yankees aren’t planning to put Pettitte on the disabled list.

Rebecca,
Thanks, that sounds like a lame story. Did you hear that Torre allowed music, but the players had to wear earphones. Girardi will allowed music to be played in the clubhouse before and after games, as long as the players don’t “compete” about it. Those postgame audio clips will be more interesting, to say the least.
Its too bad that yes doesn’t broadcast yankee spring training games when the nets are playing.. I bet the ratings would be higher for the yank spring training game
mel-
Kobe almost saved the day against Golden State, can’t believe they almost blew a 26 pt lead.
“Thanks, that sounds like a lame story.”
Leiter’s said flat out that it wasn’t true. Kay used to ask him about it sometimes.
There was, apparently, one time where Kazmir came into the weight room and switched the music Leiter had playing to something…younger…and Al said something about it. But he didn’t ask for the kid to be traded.
Interesting how NONE of the competing relievers are scheduled to pitch. Perhaps minds are made up already about who gets the final three spots?
HaHa, Buddy. They had them at 99-97 and should’ve taken control.
Boy, the Warriors live & die by the three, huh? Should be another good game tonight.
Nuggets catching a huge break with Nowitzki going down.
“Why was Matsui scratched from the lineup?”
Maybe they want to see more of Ensberg and Shelley leading down to the wire?
Has he played several days in a row now?
“Interesting how NONE of the competing relievers are scheduled to pitch. Perhaps minds are made up already about who gets the final three spots?”
Those three guys won’t go 9 innings. Someone will still get into the game. Perhaps those are just the guys they know for sure will get into the game.
Didn’t take Patterson long to get picked up after being released by the Nats.
Signed a minor league deal with Texas as Brandon McCartney’s out until May.
I sure hope that the conditioning and focus pays off for the Yankees. At least it’s good to know we won’t be starting behind the 8-ball.
Perhaps I should say “get into the game” a few more times.
RE: Matsui…Moyer’s a lefty. So, they probably want to see Morgan and Shelley in there against him, and ALSO perhaps see how Matsui responds to pinch hitting against a righty reliever later in the game.
But it says Hughes is slated to throw 90 pitches. Rivera will get a full inning on top of that, and Hawkins probably will too. That sounds like a full game to me.
whozat,
I believe he has. I hope Ensburg helps us this year. He hasa been ice cold for awhile now. Maybe it is good to get him in alot this week.
mel,
One word. DUKE. I have to thank them for helping my brackett out. I had them going down in the second round. At least UCLA is still kicking. I have them in the finals.
“I sure hope that the conditioning and focus pays off for the Yankees. At least it’s good to know we won’t be starting behind the 8-ball.”
Me too. If they wind up tiring down the stretch, though, the same people who lambasted Joe T for running a lazy camp will call out Joe G for running camp too intensely.
I think they’ll be OK. ARod is a monster, Cano and Melky are on his workouts with him, Betemit can spell Jeter on days when fly-ball guys are pitching, and there’s plenty of OF/1B guys to give all the vets rest at those positions. And Molina is good enough to give Jorge two days off a week.
“But it says Hughes is slated to throw 90 pitches. Rivera will get a full inning on top of that, and Hawkins probably will too. That sounds like a full game to me.”
You think Hughes will throw 7 innings with 90 pitches? Sure, he COULD. But I don’t think he will.
Can we all agree that this years bench is the best we’ve had in atleast 7 years.
“I hope Ensburg helps us this year. He hasa been ice cold for awhile now.”
Yeah, but he’s got enough of an MLB track record that, as long as his shoulder is healthy, I want him on this team. He can really help balance the lineup against lefty pitching if he can hit in line with his career numbers against southpaws.
“Can we all agree that this years bench is the best we’ve had in atleast 7 years.”
I certainly feel that way. It’s light on defensive skill and speed, but this is American League ball. Add Gardner and Gonzo for the playoffs, if need be.
90 pitches for Hughes?
Woohooo, that’s like 3 and 2/3 innings for him.
Prove me wrong, Phil. Prove me wrong.
Talk about old coots pitching …
Didn’t Nolan Ryan throw his 6th no-hitter when he was 43 and his 7th when he was 44?
And he had a 3.72ERA in 27 starts at 45?
And he beat the living snot out of some guy half his age who had the balls (and lack of brains) to charge the mound on him?
Niekro could still pitch (relying on the knuckler) at 48. His innings pitched over his final 4 years were almost like a workhorse by today’s standards: 215 (age 45) 220 (46) 210 (47) and 138 (48).
Ryan was still sort of good and threw sort of hard at 45 (157 innings) but he had 12 appearances and a 4.88 in 66 innings at 46. Had 3 years less in the tank than Niekro, but he threw HARD all his career so it’s no surprise.
Paige’s ERA at 46 was 3.53 in 117 innings so he lasted slightly longer than Ryan.
Ryan was amazing, Paige didn’t even get his ML debut until he was 41 (which, as with his fellow Negro Leaguers, was criminal) but as far as defying age goes it appears Niekro is hard to beat.
Gotta admire all 3 guys no matter who won more or lasted longer.
Paige’s 1 inning at 58 was after a 12-year layoff. Would have been great to see what Satch could have accomplished in MLB if he’s gotten his shot earlier.
Also would have been great to see how many games Ryan could have won if he didn’t play most of his career on weak teams.
Mark Alan:
Lost in a supermarket
And he beat the living snot out of some guy half his age who had the balls (and lack of brains) to charge the mound on him?
That would be our very own(for a second)Robin Ventura. He got him in a head lock and proceded to pound him. The most emmbarrasing but woopin ever IMO.
SoS,
I think we can agree it’s better than the bench of the last few years. But it’s still not good enough in some people’s eyes.
Anyone care to extrapolate the rotation from here on out?
Today: Hughes
Tues: Kennedy
Wed: Wang
Th: ?? (Pettitte questionable/would need to go 90 pitches for Toronto)
Fri: Mussina
Sat: ?? (This would be Hughes slot)
Even Farsworth might’ve had his hands full with Ryan.
Or maybe not.
I think Nolan Ryan was beating up Robin Ventura, but I could be wrong. I’ve also read that Ryan was physically different from most human beings as his tendons and ligaments were strangely stronger and thicker than most human beings. Ryan was a freak of nature.
Looking forward to seeing what the Yanks lineup will be against a left handed pitcher.
SoS - Ventura charging the mound and gettling pummeled by Ryan is such a classic baseball moment. Don’t mess with Texas I guess
Even Texas wouldn’t mess with Ryan.
Jimmy 27,
I was just telling my wife about it a week ago. It just makes me bust up thinking about it.
a.Ryan was old enough to be his dad.
b.He started the fight be charging him.
c.He gets caught in a head lock and cant get out.
I could only immagine what his teammates said to him the remainder of the year. Any guesses?
Pick on someone your own age. Maybe.
Walker, Texas Ranger might.
Walker, Texas Ranger might.
lol.He would put that buck 20 over his lap and spank him like a child.
Yeah, that was Robin Ventura that got into it with Ryan. Nolan kind of had Robin in a headlock while bopping him in the head. After the fight Ventura said it was basically like getting a noogie.
SoS - I wonder if that was the last time he charged the mound.
I think Ventura was a young punk back then - seemed like a good guy while in NY - Good ass wooping straightened him out.
What year was that? 1992-3?
SoS - I wonder if that was the last time he charged the mound.
I believe so.
Good ass wooping straightened him out.
Getting your ass wooped on national television would straighten anyone out.
For those are wondering

At 1:40 of this clip there is a still shot of Ryan/Ventura. Wish I could find the full clip.
Most memorable Mound Charge (IMO)
“You think Hughes will throw 7 innings with 90 pitches? Sure, he COULD. But I don’t think he will.”
The point is that there is no plan to have any of the competing relievers pitch, according to what Pete wrote. Hughes gets 90 pitches no matter what. If that gets him through seven innings (I agree it’s not likely) then Girardi doesn’t see the competing relievers.
April 12th as well - 1968.
April 12th as well - 1968.
Great. Now its down to a third attention. Welcome chris.
Sooooo……..who is the oldest poster here?
Who is the youngest?
I’m sure I’m neither.
I’m from 1964–that must make me one of the oldest!
E-ROC,
Everything’s bigger in Texas. Lance Armstrong’s heart and/or lung capacity’s freakishly large.
Motown,
I doubt that. OLD YANKS FAN and i believe GreenBeret were much older.
SOS - good to hear. Aging is always better than the alternative, anyway.
Motown- There’s got to be a couple guys in their 50s or 60s out there - what do ya think?
I’m 1967 (full disclosure)
SOS - good to hear. Aging is always better than the alternative, anyway.
Ill try to remember that. Being i just used just for men for the first time and im in my early 30’s.
SoS I hope you meant “are” much older
I’m 1967 (full disclosure)
You wouldnt happen to have been born april 12? Everyone else has.
Yes.Meant are.
Have a good night fellas.
Jimmy - I am sure you are right; at least I hope so. Older fans bring more knowledge.
Motown - are you in Motown now, or from there?
Do you get to listen to Harwell (is he still on?)
He is top 3 all time in my book.
“Stood there like the house by the side of the road”
Jimmy - Motown is short for Morristown, NJ–I started using the name and then realized that there is a much more meaningful use of the word “Motown.” I’m also from Oakland, NJ, and always refer to it, again forgetting that there is a much more famous Oakland.
Motown - funny stuff - I grew up in Little Falls - I know of where you speak.
I’m seventeen.lol.
Off-topic, but I just came across a great article about Nick Markakis. Check this out, you’ll enjoy it.

If it’s true that Moyer’s debut was June 16, 1986 (http://www.baseball-reference.com/m/moyerja01.shtml) then he made his debut before Hughes was even born (June 24, 1986).
