Canseco to A-Rod: “Call me a liar”

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 26, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jose Canseco was interviewed by ABC’s Nightline news show and refused to produce any evidence to back up his claim that he introduced Alex Rodriguez to a steroids dealer. “The timing’s not right,” he said.

“Let’s see how Alex reacts to this,” Canseco said. “Let’s see how Alex reacts. Let’s see if they call me a liar again. How’s that for you? Let’s see if all of a sudden they’re gonna call me a liar again.”

Rodriguez has yet to respond directly to Canseco’s charges. Team officials said during the day that they expected a statement to be released. But as of now, that has yet to happen.

Rodriguez has a team of handlers led by Hollywood agent Guy Oseary and Manhattan PR man Richard Rubenstein.

Canseco’s book is due to be released on April 1 – April Fool’s Day.

Pete, thnx for these news I really do love them. I’m just scare people will think you keep pounding A-rod. I know your job is to present news, lets hope people understand it as well as I do, but it does not look good, that you go scrambleling for a A-rod news, especially “bad” A-rod news

  3. Yeah! March 26th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

And by the way, I think A-rod got the “Juice”, But I won’t stop liking him because of that. He still the greatest player.

How am I pounding A-Rod? I linked to a story from another site. I’m scrambling for A-Rod news? Really?

This is what is happening. Think what you want. I provided you with assorted facts, there’s not an ounce of opinion in there.

See the respect the Soxs pay their players
Red Sox outfielder Brandon Moss was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Boston’s 5-1 loss to Oakland on Wednesday.
Moss played right field in Boston’s first two regular season games in Japan in place of the injured J.D. Drew. Moss’ ninth-inning home run tied Wednesday’s opener, which the Red Sox went on to win 6-5 in 10 innings.

So when exactly is the time going to be right? It wasn’t right in 2004 (or whenever the heck Juiced came out). Show us what you’ve got or go away.

  12. Back Bench March 26th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

On a more useful note, the RS sent Brandon Moss down to the minors.

If we really want Canseco to go away, we shouldn’t dignify what he’s trying to say. Let him fade into baseball obscurity.

This is getting intense. I have a feeling he has no proof.

  16. Westerner99 March 26th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Nothing wrong with sending a player down…let’s not go overboard in parsing every little move the Red Sox make as a terrible, classless thing.

Why is jose canseco still making the news. he clearly cares nothing about his (never) good name, why should we believe anything that comes out of his mouth? he obviously is out to make a buck. he was despicable when he played baseball and he’s just as disgusting now.

  19. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond March 26th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

I’m not a violent person, but part of me wants to throttle Canseco with my bare hands. Problem is, my hands wouldn’t fit around his neck.

  20. Joe from Long Island March 26th, 2008 at 8:18 pm

I try to keep up with Chad Jennings Scranton-Wilkes Barre blog. He consistently has good info in there. In his last couple of posts, he mentions the players waiting for the last cuts.

It must be an interesting group of players there. You have the young guys coming up, like Alan Horne, with tons of potential, hopes and dreams. Then you have the career minor leaguers, guys like Cody Ransom, still chasing the dream. Or Nick Green, who played on a ML roster a couple of years ago, and who now is described as utility. Think about it – a utility infielder on a AAA team. Then you have the players who are cut. Who are facing their dreams dying.

Maybe it’s the wine that I had with dinner, but I just found that striking.

  24. Drew March 26th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

All he said was he introduced him to a steroids dealer. So if I introduce someone to one of the Gotti’s, does that make them a mobster?

Canseco should crawl back under a rock and stay there.

In my opinion Alex should not respond to anything Canseco says. Sensationalism sells, what better way to increase book sales then to toss accusations at arguably the most recognizable in MLB…

Canseco will be relegated to the dustbin of obscurity where he belongs. Alex is enroute to Cooperstown.

  37. beezr March 26th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

It seems like the question out there now is, “Is what Canseco said true?” But that’s giving Canseco way too much credit. Even if Alex came out tomorrow and confirmed this, it still wouldn’t matter. “Introduced to s steroid dealer”? What does that really mean? ‘Introduced’ could mean anything and ‘steroid dealer’ could mean many things especially since it seems like a lot of the dealers were guys that served other functions with clubs(“Alex, this is our clubhouse attendant, Mark”. There ya go; introduced to a steroid dealer) Throw in the fact that Canseco is scraping the bottom of the barrel to make money and it means nothing. The ghost writer who refused to work with Canseco was right, he has nothing.

  38. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond March 26th, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I’m assuming that story backs up what you said, because all I see on the page are question marks. ;)

Good for ‘sui! I hope she doesn’t mind his, ahem, personal library.

  39. pat March 26th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Why isn’t Jose calling out Ordonez to say he didn’t inject him with steroids? As good as Magglio is as a player, he isn’t high profile enough to help sell books.

A little common sense tells me that being accused of using steroids (Ordonez) is more damning than sort of being accused of possibly being affiliated with someone who has a connection to distributing steroids(A-Rod). A verbal sparring is what Canseco wants and should be avoided at all cost.

As to A-Rod walking away, if I was a writer, I’d be sure to ask the best player on the team that the fans want to hear from a baseball question before I would ask a tabloid type question knowing his proclivity to bolt.

  40. Bronx Born March 26th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Peter, you did nothing wrong in what you reported. It was strictly objective and facts of what happened. I do however feel that Canseco is grandstanding and well frankly a toady. I don’t like him never have don’t think that will change. I rather we did not give him legitimacy. But it is a bit late for that. ARod is going to have to handle this latest noise through his agent and PR talent. I am sure they will handle it will and he can just get on with the game.

We just do not know about anyone do we? So much suspicion has been cast that the game is so tainted now. It is difficult to understand why football, or basketball or jeepers wrestling does not get the bad guy fall out. I wish someone could explain that to me. Pete?

  41. Dirk from Rockland March 26th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

    Westerner,
I don’t think anyone was saying the RS did such a classless thing by sending Moss down there. I think they were just saying that it wasn’t a smart move– based on the production the kid had over the past couple of days compared to what Nancy did last year.

    Canseco = Yawn

Find it interesting that this good friend / trainer of his – “Max” from Toronto (McNamee?) – is never quoted nor is it even suggested the guy told his good friend Jose that he had any contact with Alex, sold him anything, or did anything with A-Rod at all, despite Canseco’s strong desire to get A-Rod somehow. That to me is the massive hole in this story.

How can you blame Pete for reporting the news? It might not be something you want to hear, but Canseco was proven right last time around. I don’t think he happens to have anything of substance in this book, but to get on Pete for reporting it is absurd. He is not sinking to Jose’s level by reporting something that every major news agency will report.

  70. Clare March 26th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

    Peter,

See, this is where your anti-ARod bias is a problem. Twice in your post you say that ARod “has yet” to respond and “has yet” to issue a statement. That clearly implies that he should. And your title and the whole tenor of this post implies that ARod needs to respond to Canseco.

Have you read Pat Jordan’s article on Canseco? Canseco does not have a shred of credibility at this point. Yes, he was largely right about most of the info in his first book, but right now, as Jordan documents, he’s totally broke and desperate for money. ARod is the biggest name in the game, and Canseco is hurting for cash. I’m sure most PR people would tell ARod not to dignify this with a comment. Anything ARod says just continues the story for another day, keeping Canseco’s name in the news, and helping him sell books.

Your post is totally slanted the other way. Given your history of comments about ARod, it’s hard not to see your take on this story as just another example of bias against ARod.

  71. Mike R. - You are a liar! There. I said it. March 26th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Jim Clark – Canseco doesn’t determine when the timing is right, neither does his lawyer, his publisher or his publicist. Canseco’s bank account determines when the time is right.

  72. Peter Abraham March 26th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

  75. Jim Clark March 26th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

Mike R. I don’t know if you or how many people out there know this but back in the early 1990s before the internet, Canseco owned a 900 number. You could call and pay a few dollars to hear recent news from him on what he was up to. I certainly never called so I don’t know what great insights he passed on about hitting or Bruce Springsteen shows.

  76. Clare March 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

    Peter,

You totally ignored my point in favor of the kool-aid crack. My point, again, is only Canseco gains if ARod responds. You cannot really fail to see that, can you?

You are not ARod and judging him by what you would do is irrelevant.

  77. pat March 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

A Rod is in a damned if you do/ damned if you don’t situation. He has nothing to gain by acknowledging Jose Canseco, especially after Canseco’s original editor quit on him and claimed there was no evidence to back the claim. A Rod is better off letting Don Yeager’s words speak for him.

When he fired Scott Boras A Rod hired media consultants. I’m sure they are advising him to not elaborate on the matter. A Rod can’t get hurt if he says nothing, but words can be held against him.

  80. Baja March 26th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

    Peter,
Would you call them on it, even if there was nothing to be gained for you, and they would sell more books? If I was advising Arod, I’d tell him not to feed the troll. At the end of the day, you’re out of food and Jose is still a troll.

  81. DonVitoOfDaBronx March 26th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

By definition, any garbage that Canseco spews from his mouth is not news. My opinion, Peter, and I am sure that many of your followers agree. Period.

  82. Renee in Boston March 27th, 2008 at 12:12 am

i’d love to know what these players/mlb as a whole did to canseco to make him so angry and vindictive.

it’s one thing to “come clean” about your own personal steroid use, but why call all these guys out on it jsut for publicity? and then point fingers at every dominant player still in the game. somebody made him very mad

  83. Old Lady March 27th, 2008 at 12:25 am

I can understand why Pete, a journalist, would want A-Rod to answer back to Canseco’s charges.

But in a case like this – given the accusations, who’s making them and the way they were presented – you never ever ever should address it with anything more than “no comment”. It confers credibility where there pretty much is none, and every word A-Rod says will be parsed & (mis)interpreted.

Plus, I doubt A-Rod wants to give Canseco any free publicity for his book by talking about its content.
