Spring training Game 26: Yanks at Phillies

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Mar 26, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

YANKEES
Gardner CF
Cano 2B
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Giambi 1B
Posada C
Betemit SS
Lane LF
Wang RHP

Notes: Yes, Wang is hitting. However he has been instructed not to swing. … Wang will be backed off a bit and throw 75 pitches. … Nick Green declined an option to become a free agent and is staying with the Yankees, even though he is likely headed to the minors.

Nick Green must love the Yankees! Good to hear.

I know AL teams have to get permission to use the DH when visiting NL teams during spring training. I was wondering the other day if any NL teams actually refused this request. Did the Phillies refuse to let us use a DH?

Having Nick Green at AAA is a good insurance policy (and the AAA team is pretty bad and can actually use him).

This makes keeping Ensberg on the roster an even more logical move. Should they need a utility guy later on they can just call up Green.

Interesting to see Gardner starting in center

According to MLB.com’s Jason Beck, the Tigers released 34 year-old southpaw reliever Tim Byrdak today. Byrdak stuck out 49 in 46 innings last year, but also walked 26. He had a lousy spring.

If the Tigers released Byrdak, he must have had a horrible Spring. The Tigers’ pitching in general, and bullpen in particular, will be their downfall.

Peter what do you think about Gardner starting in center this late in spring training?

I think the Gardner thing is just about giving Melky a day off he has played in a bunch of games in a row and one of them was a travel game so he gets to stay at home rather than going to Clearwater.

He will be back in there tomorrow at home. Just your typical end of spring shuffling.

Sort of surprised about Nick Green thought there were a few teams interested in him for the ML team but I guess if you think you are going to the minors anyway Scranton team is not a bad place to be

probably the same as betemit and lane starting at SS and LF…

regulars don’t like sitting riding on buses to away games in the spring.

“probably the same as betemit and lane starting at SS and LF…

I doubt Melky Cabrera is in the veteran’s position of saying “I don’t want to take a bus ride today.”

Either he’s sore, or somebody actually wants to take one more look at Gardner in CF…probably the latter. Possibly, they just want to send Melky a message.

Gardner’s still here, Lane’s still in camp, so is Ransom. Interesting. Patterson will get a bullpen spot, I feel confident of that. He deserves it, that’s for sure.

I think Wang should take some hacks anyways. Mo did!
