Ian Kennedy had to fight his way through a start against the Indians.
Jose Canseco is making trouble for Alex Rodriguez. This notebook also has updates on Andy Pettitte, uniform patches and some minor-league work for two pitchers.
————
Word is that A-Rod will issue some sort of statement today in response to Canseco.
The book is a joke and you can see that for yourself here. Unfortunately, given the tenor of the times in baseball, it’s news.
As for baseball, there are two things happening today: Andy Pettitte throwing a bullpen and the Yankees facing the Phillies in Clearwater. Check later later for updates.

i wonder how long lester will last in this game…one more inning?
Harden is murdering these fools
they could swept them if not for them giving the game away yesterday.
another K for harden
Harden has Ace stuff, just has to stay healthy.
Hopefully, New York surrounds ands supports Alex, changing the general feeling and attitude towards their star slugger. What surprises me most, is his willingness to answer back so quickly. Also amazing, the ESPN news ticker… while it displays the news of Rodriguez’s introduction to the “known supplier”, it does not show news of Magglio’s (supposed) injection.
i don’t think this slur against a-rod will have any traction. it’s such obvious garbage.
Down with the Red Sox,,,down with Canseco….Long live the mighty and powerful Yankee Empire !
you got that right Don Vito! big papi strikes out again. hasn’t had a hit yet this whole series. manny 0-2 as well
I hate JULIO LUGO
just as i say that manny hots a HR. i shoulda kept my mouth shut
yeah i hate lugo as well, but i hate nobody in baseball more than youkilis. i can’t even stand looking at him
Manny’s come into Spring with a purpose… IMO, he’s primed and ready for a huge 40HR/140RBI year.
Youkilis doesn’t grab his nuts pretends the ball passes him, collect millions, beats his wife, looks like a scarecrow, plays horribly defensively,
and plays for the Red Sox.Hey, Pete, it was John Rocker who said Alex had met with doctors, not Canseco.
I have Harden in my Yahoo fantasy league. High risk/high upside pick looking good at least for today.
Weird….SI took the Alex story off their MLB top stories.
Lester rarely goes past 5 innings….
Nancy Drew out – - again ….
Varitek is aging fast ….
Boston’s powerhouse pitching ? – - pfffffft !!
Verrrrry overrated team.
Also weird: All their MLB top stories are from late Feb-early March. What is with the sports websites today?!
“Girardi is so pleased with Jason Giambi’s defense at first base that he may not necessarily take him out of games in the late innings. Giambi has not made an error this spring.”
Great to hear, Peter. I’m really hoping for a big year from Jason.
he missed an easy tag at first base the other day. runner would have been picked off.
Now the ESPN announcers are cackling over the fact that the Red Sox came to Japan to play–yet Hank made the comments about the Red Sox Nation being “smaller” than the Yankees.
Good lord. I miss John Miller.
You guys missed it since you are watching on ESPN… but at 7:26 AM when I was getting ready for work up here in Boston NESN had some Red Sox executive in the booth and he said that the Red Sox have surpassed the Yankees in excitement amongst its fans
stupidity on t.v. what else is new.
Bryan–could he be feeling that, perchance, because he’s a RED SOX EXECUTIVE? How can there even be a barometer for that, especially by someone so close to the situation? This is ridiculous.
just 6 more outs guys…
I have Manny in the early running for MVP. Although he should lose some points for posing on that HR tonight.
Boston relievers looking good today.
Yea I have no idea how you can judge that… he must have spoken to some illiterate Sox fans from Southie named Sully and Mc
Bryan-
Yah I’m up in Boston too. I’ve been hearing that everyday for years from a lot of my friends who are Sox fans.
They like to use thier sold out game streak as an argument, with no mention of just how small Fenway actually is..
Oh well, suppose it adds to the rivlary.
steve phillips saying that the A’s are playing with fire having to go through the top of the red sox order again… what a jackass
the munchkin flies out
I got up late what did Harden sit on in his fastball
and what did he top out on ?
bobby crosby error hopefully won’t cost…
Error on Crosby.. Nice, lets give them extra outs. That never comes back to haunt a team..
hey brandon, they say he was hitting 95
and lester was handing out walks like candy… ( per usual)
anyone know the policy of the nfl on drug testing punishment??
thanks MikeE
Nice, stuck out Manny to end the inning.
any time Brandon…
and i too, am fully supporting the new movement of alex being alex.
Phillips a jackass? That’s new. After hearing the way he talks about baseball I checked wikipedia to see if he played the game, instead, I found what affirms his distaste for New York baseball.
-and lester was handing out walks like candy… ( per usual)-
one of the most overrated SP prospects in the league, he was an ok LHP but all the sudden because of his condition was overhyped to be a 17 game winner
lets just hope huston street doesn’t come out in the 9th to give the game back to them…
the big tough Red Sox offense – pooof!
-and i too, am fully supporting the new movement of alex being alex.-
thanks the new campaign begins
Harden topped out, according to the Red Sox radio broadcast, at 95, and was basically sitting at 92-93 for the game.
Street pitched 2 innings yesterday no chance he gets 1 today.
Brandon-
Yah I was thinking that too.. Anybody watching or listening to the game? Anyone warming in the bullpen or are they going to stick with Foulke for another inning?
embree warming up…
LOL that ball tailed back in, more like was down the pike
Stark is bucking recent trends that actually have the yankees winning the division.
yeah!!
they are talking about how fenway park always sells out and how expensive yankee prices are. jeeeez
So Alex was introduced to someone. Hey ALex this is my friend Bob. And it makes news. He supposedly hits on Jose’s wife while Alex is single (LIke Jose never hit on any woman). ANd it is news. Not nearly a mention of anything else stated in the book.
Alex’s statement should be, I’m not dignifying his allligations with a responce.
atleast Stark is non-bias and more about facts
Phillips is a moron
Jennifer the main thing here is about Jessica, me thinks Alex got the deal done and Mrs. Former Canseco blabbed about Alex’s greatness
Well YS would sell out every game if it only held 30,000 people. How an you listen to that garbage.
And wow boston seats are CHEAP! The cheapest seat is 12 bucks to STAND!! and 325 for the most expensive $325!!
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/bos/ballpark/seating.jsp
YEah they are cheap!
lowell on base…
Come on Embree, ths Sox aren’t paying you anymore.
My mistake 20 bucks to stand!
DP!!
onnnnnnnnnne…twoooooooooooooo
Hmm my original post didn’t show up.
I guess it doesn’t like links. Anyway go check the prices on the soxs site. Not much cheaper than the Yankees.
i like sean casey already
5 days and 4 hours until opening day.
i’m surprised that the tickets are at all cheaper, but thanks and good morning jennifer…
jennifer-
You’re right Jennifer, the prices aren’t much less at all. But why would an announcer check his facts before saying something? That’d just be silly.
YEAH WE ARE TIED FOR FIRST!!
YEAH BABY!!!
both Dice-BB and lester were bad…
i’m looking forward to watching wakefield crumble soon.
good luck with the jet lag when you get back boys!
So…where are those guys who were talking yesterday about how they’re sick because the Sox “always find a way” and “never give up” and are so “mentally tough”?
Looked to me like they’re just a normal good baseball team, who sometimes come back and sometimes don’t.
Also, did we take notice of how Ortiz and Manny _didn’t_ come through? Seems that it happens to EVERY player! Shocking!
Yeah when espn has their production meetings, they say just assume. There is no need to do any research. The soxs are good, Yankees are bad. That is all you need to know.
Nothing quite like a Red Sox loss to get the day started right. I really like this baseball in the morning… wish they could do this all season long.
Haha. I need the Yankees season to start now. I’m already tired of strictly following the Sox play by play.
A’s Nation wins
SAYONARA
MikeEff,
That’s okay. Hopefully the Yankees will make all the doubters choke on their chowdah.
BTW, what’s with the rendition of ‘Sweet Caroline’ in both games? Last night the Oakland crew was wondering out loud about it since Oakland’s the home team.
Boston’s theme song for 2008 ….
“You can’t always get what you want”. Sweet Caroline gets bad times.
Yah, Manny hit another HR… But he also struck out 3 times.
Best thing I’ve read all day. Verducci’s picking the Yankees to win the East. Calls for a Boston backslide.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/tom_verducci/03/25/picks.explanation/index.html?eref=T1
well at least emil brown made up for losing the game yesterday with his big shot today…gotta love that about baseball
This day is off to a good start! Can’t wait until Monday for the Yankee opener.
I kind of like that Foulke and Embree both had a hand in a Red Sox loss.
Sorry, I’m multi-commenting all over the place, but here’s the scouting report predictions from all the SI writers. Again, Yankees win the division:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/specials/spring_training/2008/previews/index.html?eref=T1
i’m going back to bed…see you guys later have a good one
i’m going back to bed…see you guys later have a good one
Buster Olney also picked the Yanks to win the East. So much for those on this blog who says he’s a Yankee hater.
Sure rub it in Mike, I am at work already
I personally like that most people have the Yanks as the underdogs or saying that the Red Sox “generate” more excitement. It will make it THAT much better when our boys win it all.
later peoples
Brandon,
Yes, Stark’s the least biased. One of the few. His reason for picking the Yankees to miss the playoffs was more of a gut feeling. The young pitching makes him nervous, but he said if the kids pick up wins the Yankees will be tough with that offense. I don’t recall who he picked for the WC. Probably AL Central runner up.
Guiseppe–Olney’s not a Yankee hater. He’s critical of everyone. In fact, he’s the one who said to stop criticizing the returning Yankee roster because “this is essentially the same staff who won 51 games in the second half”
I caught the comment about Red Sox selling out versus Yankees tickets being astronomically priced. Seems to me they left out three things: Fenway Park seats fewer people than Yankee Stadium; that both teams charge more than the league average for tickets; that the Yankees have already sold over 3.8 million tickets for this season, even with those astronomical prices.
I was also questioning why they would have played Sweet Caroline today, since the reason they gave yesterday was because the Red Sox won. Actually, though, my question is why aren’t the Red Sox the home team here? Or why wasn’t it one and one?
And today’s game should be a lesson about overreacting to every single game. It’s a long season (marathon not a sprint, yada, yada) and if you get too hyped for every game, you’re in for a long, long, ride. Especially if you multiply it by two (Yankees games and Red Sox games).
Even though Kennedy did not have his best game yesterday, I love his attitude. Confidence in the offense. Very mature attitude. Not giving up after one bad inning. What’s not to like?
Sounds to me that Jose Canseco is more than a little envious of ARod, no?
Boston will play slightly north of the .500 baseball they sit at now. Ever so slightly.
Elizabeth,
I love Buster Olney. In fact, he’s one of the top baseball writers in the business. Lots of people on this blog claims he’s a Yankee hater and that simply isn’t true at all.
In his book, he wrote the most comprehensive piece of journalism I’ve ever read about the late 90s Yankee Dynasty.
I also don’t buy that ESPN is an anti-Yankees network but that is another of worms. The truth of the matter is that they are both a pro-Yanks and pro-Red Sox network.
tino martinez was on our show this morning and he directly denied that arod has used steroids, as we ll as dismissed canseco’s claims as just hype to plug his new book. you can watch the interview for yourself at http://weblogs.cw11.com/news/local/morningnews/blogs/2008/03/tino_martinez.html or cw11.com/morningnews
Giuseppe Franco -
My feeling about ESPN is that they cover both the Yankees and the Red Sox much more than they cover the rest of MLB. However, whenever I’m listening the tenor of the coverage is a bit different. One will hear more positive coverage of the Red Sox and more biting criticisms of the Yankees.
What they are pro- is the ratings they get from the New York and Boston viewers.
Doreen,
I just think that Yankee fans don’t like hearing anyone criticize their team – whether the criticisms are warranted or not. Also, any praise of the Red Sox is automatically translated as “pro-Red Sox” or “anti-Yankee.”
To be fair, RSN does the very same thing. While Yankee fans label that network as NESPN – diehard Red Sox fans call it “YES Network II.”
It goes both ways.
I think the fans of both teams just don’t want to hear their team criticized or hear anything remotely positive about their sworn enemy. It’s as simple as that.
Gotta hand it to Canseco, he writes compelling words, mostly fictional, but compelling. It seems to me A Rod was a young guy trying to get his workout program going. Jose introduced him to a trainer and A Rod got bigger. Thus Jose concludes A Rod did steroids. It’s pretty clear that Jose has nothing on A Rod. Alex should sleep easy tonight.
Guiseppe, of course ESPN is biased against the Yankees. Olney is not. Gammons leans towards Boston. Steve Phillips is a Yankee hater and he is their “baseball General Manager”. Lupica is another who rips the Yankees every Sunday in his column and on Sports Reporters, consistently. So while Idon’t necessarily believe ESPN is trying to present a biased view, they do anyway based on the personalities they are paying. Of course Torre hated ESPN since the 2000 Clemens coverage, so that may have stoked the flames a bit.
When did the meeting supposedly take place between Alex and the steroid guy. As I said yesterday when Alex was a skinny 20 year old he had 91 XBH’s. Doesn’t seem like he would have ever needed steroids. That’s why I don’t believe Alex ever did steroids.
I posted this in the ‘political entry’ Pete made last night, and I want to re-post. Sorry, but some fellow posters made me mad this morning when I read there comments, slamming Pete for speaking HIS mind on HIS blog…
Here it is….
Forget all you politicos. I say amen, Pete. Lets see…
-Home heating oil number 2 is just BARELY cheaper than a gallon of milk.
-The US just surpassed the 4k mark for dead sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends over seas. AND, to be clear here (Boy I hate politics), it has been proven that Saddam did not support Osama bin Laden nor Al-Queada. Georgie jr. went to Iraq to avenge his father’s failures.
I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same. If someone plotted to kill my dad and failed, and I had the chance to go after them? Tough to turn the cheek, no?
But I wouldn’t spend almost five years and 4K lives to do it.
And to top it all off, bin Laden is still out there plotting American death.
The economy is in the dumper. My .com job went belly up and I’m breezing through the savings I have trying to find other decent employment.
Any right-wingers in here applauding the assault Congress has made on MLB (and the Pats/spygate nonsense) should be tarred and feathered.
There is so much more going on in the world, I could care less if Clemens and Canseco shot cattle hormones into their wives’ rear ends. Or their own…
End the war! Reduce the cost of gas, milk and essential food! Fix the economy!
Ohhh, but wait! A $600 stimulus check is coming! That’ll take care of everything !
Jeff,
No, they are not biased against the Yanks. That is just your misguided perception.
And I have no idea what Mike Lupica has to do with ESPN since he writes for the Daily News.
He’s also a Mets fan, so that probably has something to do with it.
that’s why I love Tino
Sure, when I was making close to a hundo-K a year, I was a Republican. I voted Dole, Bush, Bush.
But now that I’ve drank the Kool-Aid and seen the results, not to mention have to search the want ads for a new job now that I’m unemployed, I can officially call myself a Republo-Bama. Or Barack-ican.
Keep up the great work Pete. And unlike the fools that posted on your entry last night, I applaud you for speaking your mind not only on sports, entertainment and such, but REAL LIFE ISSUES as well.
Sorry everyone… I am officially done talking politics.
On to the important matters…
I think its great Olney picked the NYY to win the ALE. I’m surprised he wasn’t dragged into the parking lot at ESPN by Steve Phillips, Peter Gammons, John Kruk, and beaten to within an inch of his life!
Guiseppe, you are wrong. ESPN is biased. End of conversation.
bronxbomber,
Keep politics off this board. Nobody wants to read that stuff on a baseball blog.
There are thousands of forums for that kind of content and this ain’t one of them.
“YEAH WE ARE TIED FOR FIRST!!”
but we’re 1 up in the loss column
That’s funny, Jeff. I guess you don’t like losing arguments so you have to end them before any further damage.
BB77 –
There is one thing I will concede to Osama bin Laden’s views though … in his ridiculous world, Jose Canseco’s wife would have to wear a burhka over that face at all times. For that I say ‘allah akbar’!
That’s about as political as I’ll get on this blog.
She really does look like a cross between an inflatable ‘adult’ doll and Jose himself. Mist alchrighty. A suitcase full of viagra wouldn’t help if I had to look at that mug each day.
You know what.. Who cares anymore about who did and who didn’t … we don’t know if they did or not.. it’s all speculation and BS. Many more players than you think DID “try” steroids.. well, I tried weed in college a few timess, haven’t touched it since, does that mean I am a junkie? SO why bother supporting or defending anyone that has been accused of PED use?
It was obvious who was the guys that were on the stuff daily, and there were some guys that were bingeing, and others that were experimenting.. and than the few who stayed away from it.
In any case, I am sick of the gossip and crap. Take aim at MLB not the players! MLB thus far has walked away without a scratch and all they did/do is point their finger elsewhere.
There is one answer for us fans in this regard..
Ignore all of this garbage…
the “tenor of the times” has nothing to do with whether something is “news”. “news” means something is factual, or there is reason to conaider that something may be factual. The last time i checked, there’s nothing about March 2008 that has changed the nature of truth.
the honest way to say this would be: “The book is a joke, but that doesn’t matter to our decrepit journalistic standards, which make ’stupid gossip’ and ‘news’ synonymous”.
i think it comes down to individuals who work at ESPN, not the network as a whole. just know who you’re reading/listening to and take it with a grain of salt.
“And I have no idea what Mike Lupica has to do with ESPN since he writes for the Daily News.”
Mike Lupica is on the Sunday Reporters show or whatever it’s called that’s broadcast on ESPN.
Tino refutes Canseco
thank dougv for the link
Look if i want to know about books i’ll the book review in sunday times, if i want to talk about or read about politics it sure hell wouldn’t be with you guys. So let’s try and keep it to Yankee baseball.
Not biased? Their ‘lead baseball analyst’ is Peter Gammons. He was a candidate for PRESIDENT of Red Sox Nation. Doesn’t get much more partial than that.
I think the people discussing politics are just responding to Pete’s post – if you don’t want to read it, just skip over those posts…
The bosox have the most expensive tickets in baseball. They do not know what they are talking about if they say otherwise. And while the Yankees have their fair share of “suits” at games, the vast majority of the fenway crowd is Beacon Hill, Back Bay yuppie/gentry types.
I am using my $600 check to buy more Yankee tickets.
NESPN is not biased.
Mike Lupica is on the Sunday Reporters show or whatever it’s called that’s broadcast on ESPN.
So what?
Are the hosts/guests on ESPN vetted to make sure they hate the Yanks?
ESPN is in the business of making money. They certainly aren’t going to purposely alienate a very large sector of fans in the biggest market in the country.
Guiseppo,
Jeff referred to “Sports Reporters” is a show that runs on ESPN News (television) early on Sunday Mornings.
The roundtable regulars include Mitch Albom, Mike Lupica, Bob Ryan.
In spite of its East Coast bias, it’s actually an enjoyable show. It’s not at all edgy or tinged with tension. Just a bunch of guys sitting around talking sports on a Sunday morning.
Doreen,
Where did you see that excuse? They played “Sweet Caroline” in the 8th in the opener. At that point Boston was losing and I was listening to the “radio”. The Oakland crew was like, “How about that? Sweet Caroline. I thought Oakland was the home team”.
Tonight? No comment at all.
cotton eye joe would kick neil diamond’s a$s!
multiple new posts up
I think we can all agree that ESPN radio, tv, and net entities focus on the Red Sox and Yankees because they ARE baseball. You could have a lineup filled with Miguel Cabreras in Detroit and a rotation of Johan Santanas on the Mets, but it’ll still be Yankee/Red Sox.
But there’s no way you can convince us here that many ESPN personalities do not hide their Red Sox colors.
Amy Lawrence last night on the radio, “Now I’m a Red Sox fan, but I’m excited to see what Joe Torre can do for the Dodgers”.
My LAST thoughts on this piece of excrement, Jose Canseco, and his “book”:
I find it interesting how he says he didn’t want to include Alex in the first book because “people would question his motives.” What the hell does that mean? Then he goes on and on about how Alex wanted his wife. He keeps repeating that he is a “cheater,” but doesn’t have any evidence of it AT THE TIME. However, he conveniently chose to use the stuff from last year and didn’t have anything from back in the 90s to back up his story.
I love how he recalls all these conversations and quotes them word-for-word.
And, if the jerk was so upset about how Alex allegedly ogled his wife, how did Alex allegedly get ahold of her cell phone number in the first place?
Talk about the pot calling the kettle black: “I don’t like people with no morals.” He is a wife beating, tourist beating, liar — if anyone has no morals, it’s him.
So what’s next for you, Jose? A tell-all book about how Derek Jeter tried to steal your wife too?
Mel,
I don’t remember where I heard it; it was not during the game, though, because I only tuned in to one inning of the game yesterday. It was some post-game report, and probably on the radio somewhere because I was in the car a lot yesterday. Apparently someone “mis-reported.”
Hey Franco…
I prefer to stick to baseball. But when the author of this blog writes a political entry, I will openly and freely respond.
But, our agreement is the same. I hate politics. Thats why I watch sports. And read sports. And discuss sports.
