George Steinbrenner exits his golf cart before today’s ceremony to rename Legends Field after him. That’s Mrs. Big Stein with him.

Here’s my question, why does the owner of the team have to wear a credential? He owns the team!

Probably because he’s less recognizable under all that makeup. Doh!

That was one of the worst throws I’ve ever seen by Mrs. Stein. I’m sorry, but if she knew she was going to be that horrible, she should have had one of the daughters give it a try.

JGNYC – Classy! Not! Grow up you will be old someday. Will you be able to say that you accomplished all that he has? I doubt many of us will.

I know he has some dubious credits too but he has restored sports greatest franchise to its rightful place and we owe him a debt of gratitude…and that is not even his greatest accomplishment. His legacy in Tampa and surrounding areas with youth and sports is far greater. I wish him all the best and hope he gets to see his dream of a Kentucky Derby winner soon, he deserves that too.

Heh. I guess he has lookalikes.

George is a great man. We should all be thankful to root for a team that is owned by a man with as much passion for winning as George has. The guy wants to win more than anyone, and he does it with class. He belongs in the Hall of Fame ASAP.

  6. mike March 27th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Maybe because there are so many threats to Mr Steinbrenner’s life so the credential throws people off

  7. Sam March 27th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Go Georgie!!

  8. Fran March 27th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

The honor was well-deserved for George. He has done so much for the Yankees and the city of Tampa.

  9. Jim Clark March 27th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

George is a great man..for a convicted liar.

  10. Rich March 27th, 2008 at 7:10 pm

Hm. I missed the ceremony on TV and I’d never seen a picture of Mrs. Big Stein before.

  11. Jeff NJ March 27th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

George is the man. Best owner in sports from a fans perspective. Hands down.

  12. Rocco March 27th, 2008 at 7:13 pm

    GO RANGERS!

  13. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 27th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    GO DEVILS!

  14. Skippy March 27th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

    Thanks, Rebecca!

  15. Ranting Guy March 27th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

    Go Patriots! (just kidding)

  16. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 27th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

    Skippy–Anytime.

I saw someone on campus earlier with the Devils sweatshirt, and there are like no Devils fans up here (lots of Sabres fans, though), so I said “go Devils” and he said “that’s right!”

  17. Andiamo March 27th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Congratulations, George. Thanks for giving us so many memories.

  18. Rocco March 27th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

too bad the devils lost all 6 games this hear against the Rangers… 7 tonight???

  19. Gus G. March 27th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Its not a credential… its a futuristic tie. George on the cutting edge, yet again!

It’s been strange watch George seemingly age so rapidly. Throw in the supposed retirement of Chris Webber and I’m starting to feel very old.

I live near Williams College, George’s alma mater. Until recently, George was a frequent visitor here, especially in the summer and in the fall when Williams plays archrival Amherst in football.

I can’t tell you how many janitors, postal workers, moving men, waiters and blue collar folks of all ilk that George is on a first name basis with. People don’t know how generous this man is. George Steinbrenner has done a lot of things for a lot of people and he wants no recognition for any of it.

We’ve all shaken our head at many of George’s antics over the years. But the fact is he kept the Yabkees tradition alive and cemented the franchise as the face of American sports worldwide. I wish that he would formally retire so that he can be inducted sooner into the Hall of Fame and enjoy it.

Pete, It’s probably also a security swipe to open doors etc..

Repost from the last thread…but worth it.

A toast to Doreen and Gayle…. Class!

  25. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 27th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

I remember this one story of George personally directing Yankee Stadium traffic…I think it might have happened beffore my time, but I’m not sure.

Either way, George is everything you should want in an owner.

He’s demanding, doesn’t settle for second and wants the absolute best for his team. He turned a team from a laughing stock to a championship team and did it again twenty years later.

He’s certainly far from perfect, but would I rather have another non-Stein owner?

    No way. Not a chance.

    Jim Clark

What a vile petty comment you left. I will bet you do not have a clue as to the issue that George was convicted for 30 plus years ago. You just dredged up a vague memory and spewed it out. Contemptible

  27. Rocco March 27th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

    George likes calzones!

  28. Drew March 27th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

You should have heard Michael Kay kissing George’s ass on his radio show today. Sickening.

  29. richmond upon james March 27th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

He’s willing to put up the bucks to make sure we have a solid team year after year (can the Orioles or Pirates say that?) despite how nit-picky some of us fans are. I know he’ll always speak his mind and gain some attention, but would you want an owner who just didn’t care? Certainly not.

  30. gayle March 27th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Thanks backbench although not quite sure what for lol

  31. Jim Clark March 27th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Vrsoe: the truth hurts, doesn’t it? Abraham has an article later on summing up the mans good and bad parts..and I’ve been around since he bought the team and promised absentee ownership.

  32. NYSuperFan March 28th, 2008 at 9:59 am

I agree with Optimus Prime above. He was a great owner and will be missed. Its sad to see him deteriorate like that.

  33. vrsce March 28th, 2008 at 10:47 am

    Jim Clark

The truth about G. Steinbrenner’s activities in the early 70″s does not hurt me one bit. I am not his defender. I merely pointed out your stooping to a poisonous level over long gone events that had nothing to do with you onj an occasion where Steinbrenner was being honored for his Yankee contributions. Obviously nastiness is your natural vindictive stae of being. Enjoy
