Godzilla was married yesterday

March
27

Hideki Matsui put out a press release saying he was married yesterday in New York City. That explains why he wasn’t in Clearwater.

He’s having a press conference in a few minutes.

In other news, Shelley Duncan was named the winner of the Dawson Award. It’s a BBWAA award given to the best rookie in camp.

    Yeah! Congratulations!

Wow - is he really that quiet of a guy that no one knew this was coming until now?

  2. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

Who knew ‘Zilla and Mothra were dating?

  3. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    …Talk about quiet.

Countdown - that was mean, but funny. :)

  6. pat

A Tampa honeymoon. How romantic.

  7. 108 stitches

Congrats to Shelley for winning the Dawson award. Well deserved. Absolutely nobody in camp worked harder.
Brett Gardner and Ian Kennedy must have been runnerups in the voting.

  8. M & M

    Congrats to the former Godzilla!

Wow! shelly is still a rookie @ 28 yrs old.
maybe he will win the regular season ROY award.

  9. Doreen

    Hah! That’s fantastic! Now, he’s a person I’d trust with a secret.

  10. Lori

I’m sure this was mentioned by someone in a comment here and I just missed it, but I am happy to see that Tino is now a “special advisor” to Cashman! Yeah Tino! (Pete - tell him I say hi and congratulations. He won’t know who the heck I am, but say hi anyway!)

  11. Clay Bucholz stole my laptop (aka Joe)

Pete predicts that the Yankees will miss the playoffs this year. Should we ban him from the blog?

    Just kidding.

  12. E-ROC

    congrats to Shelley

  13. Wolf In Pinstripes

Among the other things which that explains is the large porn stash that showed up on ebay yesterday.

  14. whozat

“Who knew ‘Zilla and Mothra were dating?”

Nah, he’s more a Gamera type.

  15. Pretty Boy Floyd

You sure he didn’t a get a Darwin award?

What, the one posted by midekihatsui?

  17. mel

    Congratulations to Matsui-sama & Shelley!!!

(Is there one Dawson award per team? Did you guys think twice about giving him the award because of the dirty slide? lol)

  18. Tim

Peter-My prediction for 2008 - The Yankees will win 98 games and win the Eastern Division and be the #1 Seed in the AL playoffs and win the WS vs the Cubs in 5 games.

You are closer to this team than many of us, but you have to realize that this is a much, much better team than last year and what did they do?

I think that the bullpen will be better than you predict, but I too am scared of the starting rotation and CMW isn’t giving me warm fuzzies with his struggles in ST. If you’ve read Chad Jennings’ blog, it appears that Horne has been lights out over in the Minor League camp, and I predict that he will get at least 10 starts this season, unless of course Cashman wakes up and deals for another starter because I’m with you in that I don’t see the starting 5 lasting all season. It will be a great spring and summer and I see a team that will score over 1,000 runs, and pitch enough to have 98 wins.

  19. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

I heard he’s donating his porn stash is going to the AVN Hall of Fame.

  20. Chris NY

why exactly is there a press conference to announce his marriage?

    Am I missing something…..??

  21. Jeff NJ

Hmm, seems to me the world’s largest adult video collection is now on the market. Maybe if we all put in $10, Pete can buy it for the exclusive viewing of his blog readers.

  22. mel

I wonder if there are any “movies” in the gift registry? Just kidding!! Isn’t it funny how sex is so taboo in America?

Did you guys know there’s a town in Japan called Kinki?

  23. Chris NY

mel, there’s also a town right in Pennsylvania called “Beaver…” Does that count?

    Sorry…………

  24. pat

Now that this is public, did Hideki give the writers a heads up at the off the record dinner a few weeks ago.

If he did, good for the NY Media. That would be a true testiment to writers keeping their words until the player gives the go ahead to announce it.

  25. mel

Since it looks like we’re still talking projections here, I’m reposting this from the last thread. It took me a while to type it, and then Pete puts up a new thread!:

    Good morning, guys.

What a hullabaloo! Personally, I don’t think it’s in the Yankees DNA to finish in the 80’s. They might struggle, but they won’t be repeating last season’s formula.

I’ll be lambasted, but Tampa Rays (still a lame name) are poised to have a better season than the Blue Jays. The Rays are on a mission and are playing with confidence. Though we were at the butt of it, the Rays are now playing like, oh what’s the word?, a team. The Jays? They don’t seem to have that verve. It seems like their “time” was the year Boston struggled and finished third.

The Yankees will struggle, but they know that it’s 162 game season. Maybe Tampa runs out of gas after it figures out that not only is there baseball in the spring, but in the summer and fall as well. It’s difficult for young teams to perform down the stretch.

I may be a sentimental fool, but I feel like this is going to be a special year. Something about one door closing and another one opening. As long as they cut out the frickin’ errors!!!

I don’t want to talk about the Red Sox. Unless they have pitching issues like in ‘06 they’ll be there in the end.

  26. ItalianGreco

There is also a town in PA called “Intercourse”..

    And I’m sorry as well…..

  27. Brian from PA

    Congrats to Hideki and Shelly.

Real quick, if anyone has a good idea of the Blue Jays projected opening day lineup, i’d appreciate it. My 12:30 class is mind-numbingly boring and i plan on making a mock box score for Opening Day.

  28. Brian from PA

yes, Intercourse, PA. I believe it’s in Amish country somewhere…not totally sure. but i’ve seen license plats on cars that say ” I (heart) Intercourse” and they have a picture of a horse and buggy.

  29. mel

    Chris NY,

Are you referring to my rant about people teasing Igawa & Japanese people having crowded teeth? If so, kudos on your comment! Very clever.

  30. Ranting Guy

Tim - I’m predicting 100+ wins and part of the reason NY wins the division outright is that the Red Sox lack of depth (Dice-K’s & Lester’s questionable control, and Schilling’s lack of presence, and Wakefield’s age/decline) on the mound will be their achilles heel. Buckholz and Beckett will probably make some serious appearances but that won’t be enough. I’m thinking Boston’s got an outside shot at not even making the WC if another team gets a good run going. What team I’m not sure, but we’ll see.

  31. mel

    Chris NY,

And if “Beaver” has some other naughty connotation that I’m unaware of, let’s just say that ignorance is bliss!

  32. Steve (Cashman sucks)

I read the other day that Cashman reads this blog. I wonder if he laughs or cries. Maybe if we start a grass roots movement, he will resign rather than read anymore comments bashing him. I say to all, lets get started with this now and maybe by midseason he wont be able to handle it anymore.

  33. dana

“Pete predicts that the Yankees will miss the playoffs this year. Should we ban him from the blog?”

I love Pete’s blog but I can’t remember the last time any one of his predictions regarding the Yankees has ever came to fruition. If Pete says we’re missing the Post Season than oddly I am more confident than ever about our chances.

  34. Brian from PA

    Steve

Yes. Let’s try and get Cashman, the one behind the complete revitalization of our farm system which provides pretty much all of our hope for the Yankees success in the upcoming season and beyond, to resign.

  35. Clay Bucholz stole my laptop (aka Joe)

“mel, there’s also a town right in Pennsylvania called “Beaver…” Does that count?”

I relative of mine went to Beaver College. I believe it was an all girls school too. They school ended up changing the name.

That’s true. They changed to Bootie-U

Steve, do you really think that what some anonymous poster thinks is going to make Cashman want to quit one of the best jobs in MLB? Also, I’m pretty sure Cashman is generally well regarded in the industry considering how quickly he and his cohorts have been able to turn around the Yankees farm system while at the same time keeping them competitive year after year.

  39. mel

Okay guys, I’m getting the picture. Gross.

Countdown, funny! I’m as conservative as they come (uh, are?).

  40. Brian from PA

    lol Countdown.

in reality however, Beaver College became Arcadia University.

  41. Tim

My biggest arguement with the Yankees just winning 87 or so games is that if you compare the 07 Yankees and 08 Yankees coming out of ST there is no comparison. Let’s see in 07 you had Nieves, Cairo, Andy at 1B, an injured Giambi for most of the season and Igawa and the Scranton Wilkesbury revolving door in the rotation, Hughes was injured most of the season, IPK had 3 starts, Joba was around for just 6 weeks or so, Gator was the pitching coach, Minky was the main 1B most of the season, and they ended up winning 94+ games and in the playoffs. Now, common sense would say with a much, much better bench starting out the season, a much better rotation and Joba in the BP from the start it would only be sensible to say that this team will at least get off to a much better start and with the resources at their disposal be a playoff team at the least. At least SI predicts and Buster Olney predict an Eastern Division crown.

  42. al arodien

who has a picture of the bride should please post it. thanks in advance! / the porn business lost a big customer. if you know matzuies history you will understand.

  43. Lori

    OK - Time for a new thread . . .

  44. gayle

As the team leaves Tampa today for the final time this Spring will all the cuts be announced today or will the team wait until after the Marlins series??

  45. mel

Back to these projections. People are worried about our pitching. Who in the AL does NOT have pitching issues? Have you guys seen the list of pitchers that are ailing? Right on top of the list is Schilling who, although he didn’t have a ton of wins last year, is perfectly capable of keeping a game close.

Now, compare our bullpen with others. I don’t know much about the other teams, but I know that infusing Joba for the first half is some iron-clad insurance.

  46. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

I’m as conservative as they come (uh, are?).

No. It’s nice that both sides of the spectrum can agree that sexual relations are normal and not taboo.

  47. Brian from PA

the porn industry won’t lose Matsui forever. give it 10 years, he’ll be back in the loop.

  48. Brian from PA

Another big pitching problem in the AL lies with the Angels, who probably just lost Kelvim Escobar for a long time. he’s got a tear in his shoulder.

  49. Chris NY

ItalianGreco, I knew there was a better one, but I couldn’t remember it….

  50. mel

    Countdown,

I’m very conservative in that regard. I think that what people do is their own business as long as we don’t have to bear witness. PDA is gross to me. If I see people getting “busy”, I want to yell “Get a room!” But of course, I’m much too sensible and genteel to do that.

We are repressed as a society. But IMO that’s a good thing. After all, we shouldn’t all have to bear witness.

  51. pat

    TOO FUNNY!!!

Yahoo has pics from Hideki’s press conference. I tried to link but it wouldn’t work. Check it out. Instead of showing pics of the new Mrs. Matsui, he showed a pencil sketch of her.

  52. mel

    Brian,

I was going to mention him, but he had a negative effect on them last year, so that may be a case of addition by subtraction.

But doesn’t the Detroit bullpen have questions? We may have bullpen issues, but I think a lot of teams wouldn’t mind having our issues of trying to figure out who’s going to get the ball to Joba.

LaTroy seems to have a lot of confidence. That’s half the battle. And he seems very comfortable, like he’s embracing the challenges of playing for the Yankees.

And, hopefully, the brain transplant will work for Krazy Kyle….

Considering the sketch of him looks nothing like him, I wonder what she REALLY looks like

  54. gayle

Those photos I think are the funniest thing I have ever seen. He shows sketches of him and his wife. He is dressed in a beautiful suit. I dont think I have ever seen a press conference like it before where you have it to announce you have gotten married and ionstead of the bride being there you show a pencil sketch.

    Pure genius

Someone picked up Esocbar in my fantasy league. I’d bet right about now they are regreting it.

Is having sketches made a tradition? Or doesn’t he want real photo’s out there?

    Pat,

Thanks, for that. It’s so cute. Maybe she’ll be Mysterio Matsui. You know like Wilson on Tool Time or Maris on Frasier.

  61. mel

    Gayle,

Did you notice the flowers? And that Hideki looks really happy?

Is he in FLA or NY?

  62. mel

Looks like the honeymoon’s almost over in Seattle. Bedard makes Alex look like Ms. Manners:

  64. pat

Hideki should be sure to show Derek a real picture and not just a sketch. They live in the same building in NY and hitting on the new Mrs. Matsui in the elevator could be embarassing.

  65. murphydog

    Congratulations, Matsui-san.

According to some website I ran across, this is a Japanese wedding toast: Kanpai! (dry your cup). So, kanpai, Matsui-san!

(Oddly, “dry your cup” sounds like a toast I hear at Irish weddings too. I guess it’s a small world after all).

  66. Doreen

Thanks for the links to the pictures, everyone. Matsui sure does look very happy. And I think it’s pure genius to show a sketch! And very funny, too. :)

  67. murphydog

“Hideki should be sure to show Derek a real picture and not just a sketch. They live in the same building in NY and hitting on the new Mrs. Matsui in the elevator could be embarassing.”

    1) Maybe that’s why he’s only showing a sketch. He doesn’t want Jetes looking for her.

    2) Maybe Mrs. Matsui is actually a little pale, with grey, charcoal hair. Maybe that IS a picture.
