Meet Mrs. Matsui

March
27

captf132e41a6fe8432fba1acdb0cdeb00e8us_matsui_baseball_tok803.jpg

I’m not entirely sure what this is all about. But AP moved this photo of Hideki Matsui holding up a drawing of his new wife during a press conference he held today.

According to the press release Matsui issued, the still-unidentified bride “is a 25-year-old civilian and had formerly been working in a reputable position at a highly respected company. I cannot go into further details at this current time.”

Matsui didn’t reveal much when we spoke to him other than to say they were married in a small ceremony in New York. They were introduced by mutual friends after the 2006 season.

I don’t know what to make of it either, but I’m positive it’s the greatest thing ever. A drawing!

  2. V

Y’know, you think that someone making as much as Matsui could do better than a drawing of a make believe woman ;-)

  3. Doreen

Hmm, I’m just now more curious than ever to know who this woman is. And why can’t she be identified just yet? Does her family know? Is she a person of some import? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!!!

  4. Potch

    WTF?!?!?!

  5. Lori

The really funny picture, Pete, is the one on Yahoo’s site of Matsui holding up two sketches – one of him and one of his wife. The one of him looks nothing like him, though, so you have to wonder about this one.

  6. DMan

Does this feel awkward to anyone else?

  7. Bill Porter

I’m glad she worked in a reputable position, so to speak.

  8. jimmy1138

Have you ever seen Kei Igawa’s wife?

  9. Rishi

FYI -posted Buster’s Yankees blog entry in the line-up thread

  10. Ralelen

This is so weird. Only the Japanese could pull this off.

  11. Lori

    He is quite the suitor:

    From Yahoo! Canada:

“The Sankei Sports tabloid said Matsui met the woman in the 2006 off-season. They exchanged e-mails and phone calls, and eventually she came on trips to New York where they would dine together and go driving, it said.

“Before long, Matsui became attracted to her personality as well as her discretion and proposed to her,” said the tabloid, which ran news of the engagement as a giant banner headline.”

  12. mel

It seems like the two of them sketched each other (Thank God they’re head shots!). So he may be sharing something from a special moment. I think it’s sweet and shows us a different side of Matsui. And that bet with Jeter & Abreu’s just priceless.

  13. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    is that an Etch-a-Sketch??

  14. gayle

“she came on trips to New York where they would dine together and go driving, it said.”

Now I know that dinners can be romantic but I have NEVER heard or experienced DRIVING being a way to court someone, especially in NYC traffic

  15. John in Ohio

I heard she used to be engaged to Mr. Sparkle.

  16. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    Hey!

Jose Canseco just released a sketch of his wedding!!!

    http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/3161/josetl2.jpg

  17. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Bill  So wrong but lol

  18. Ranting Guy

    Note to Jeter and Abreu:

Don’t write those checks yet, you may not have lost the bet! It appears that Matsui only married a drawing of a woman.

Well, that’s great news for Matsui. Photographic evidence shows that he did 1,000 times better than Canseco did. Even if he just married a drawing.

Jeter saying he’d pay Matsui now rather than wait the year to see if he would get married too was classic Jeter.

  19. Bill Porter

Jen I feel so guilty, I should just say mazel tov and let it go. That language is so stilted and comical though.

  20. Don Capone

    Is that a police sketch?

  21. Ranting Guy

Countdown – If that sketch is accurate, the Cansecos got married before he discovered steroids but after her boob job. :)

  22. mel

    Rishi,

Thanks from all of us who don’t subscribe to Insider.

  23. Eric

I know it’s kind of late, but I’m looking for a fantasy league to join… does anyone know of one that hasn’t done their draft yet?

  24. Ranting Guy

Bill Porter, that was pretty funny.

  25. Rishi

mel – that’s why I post it :) I figure not everyone has access..

  26. Doreen

Drives can be very romantic. The stops along the way can be even more so. I’m assuming they drove outside the city proper.

  27. Doreen

And actually, what better way to be alone than driving? There are probably very few places that he’s unrecognizable.

  28. David

anyone know who is pitching tomorrow vs the Marlins in miami?

  29. mel

    David,

If I were to guess, it’s be Mike.

Why are only two pitchers listed for today? Will it be situational after Karstens?

  30. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

The stops along the way can be even more so. I’m assuming they drove outside the city proper.

    Where?

    The Causeway?

    The Rest-Stops in Jersey??

  31. Phil Hughes is Saved!

    What the hell? haha

  32. mel

    Countdown,

What does your name mean? Is it countdown to Opening Day? And if it is, will you change your name?

  33. Beemill

This reeks of an intricate April Fool’s joke to me. I want to see a marriage license.

  34. Ranting Guy

Beemill – you may be onto something …

  35. pat

    Gayle

Expand the image of a drive from Matsui renting a Ford and cruising Times Square. Think limo.

Ever seen the movie, No Way Out?

  36. rl1856

Well April 1 is next Tuesday……lets see what happens.

    Best,

    rl1856

  37. mel

I’m always into what the “experts” are projecting. Looks like espn doesn’t have their list out yet, which is kind of cheat because the season’s already technically started. But if you look at the team capsules at espn they show projections at the bottom.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/preview08/team?team=nyy

This blog needs to adopt Buster. He’s the only objective, reasonable baseball analyst there is. lol.

  38. Ranting Guy

I doubt that’s what it is, but it would be hysterical if it was.

  39. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I think he wants to win the bet!! Although he might get himself in trouble if he lied to Joe to get a day off.

  40. Beemill

Jennifer – ever think Joe G may be in on the joke? :)

  41. mel

Aren’t they dedicating the field today?

  42. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I don’t think he’d get involved in that kind of stuff. What happens if he let Matsui leave (being in on the joke) than something happened.

  43. murphydog

According to the press release Matsui issued, the still-unidentified bride “is a 25-year-old civilian and had formerly been working in a reputable position at a highly respected company. I cannot go into further details at this current time.”

Pete, you left out the rest of the quote:

“Just then a terrific noise exploded over the calm and serene well wishers, a noise the few had ever heard before. A huge, winged shadow billowed closer, covering everyone in the crowd. Then the groaning broke over them again, a sound like giant iron pillars being torn apart at high speed, causing terror to well up in each of their hearts. A huge gnarled purple claw reached down and plucked up Matsui-san, swung him high up over the crowd. Following Matsui-san up, the crowd realized that they were all in great danger: Rodan was back!

  44. Say it ain't so

What a lovely picture of her. Beautiful skin.

  45. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    Mel-

    yes Countdown to opening day.

the time is currently 4 days and 10 minutes until the opening pitch.

I’ll probably have to find a new handle – Countdown ‘08

  46. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    Beautiful skin.

    I don’t know – she looks a little pale.

  47. ummfada

I heard Igawa’s wife WALKed out on him. See what I did there?

  48. Bob

    Civilian! What does that infer?

  49. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    ummfada–

I heard she’s wild and kept hitting opposing batters :)

  50. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

mel- I think you are right

  51. S.o.S.27

    Good morning,
    Two things.
    1. What are the chances that Matsui signed a pre nump. stating he keeps all his porn stash.

2.Speeking of Matsui. Can Kaz su(dont have spell check)for completely being humiliated on espn. They had him yesterday missing part of the season with Anal fissure. Dont know what that french work means. But couldnt they have kept the anal part on the down low. Couldnt they say grawing pull or something. Whats next? He has an itch down there.

  52. mel

    Ummfada,

Umm. I heard she was a size BB.

  53. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

I heard she wears sunglasses to bed.

  54. Jax

This is really weird. Why exactly does Hideki need to show us a sketch of his wife?

  55. raymagnetic â„¢

According to the preview all of the Yankees pitchers will have WHIP’s over 3 and ERA’s under 2.

  56. Boston Dave

    mel,

I think Buster Olney is great. I believe he happens to be a Yankees fan but not many would know that because of his objectivity.

Coincidentally (perhaps), three of my favorite TV or sports analysts are all Yanks fans (Buster Olney, Keith Olbermann, Max Kellerman).

  57. mel

    jennifer,

They’re broadcasting the ceremony. After the commercial(shout out to Howie & Seacrest).

  58. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

I heard she wears sunglasses to bed.

    now THATS kinky

  59. Say it ain't so

S.O.S. – ESPN is only reporting what the Houston Chronicle had plastered all over their sports section for the last few weeks now. Poor Kaz, nothing is sacred, haha.

Countdown- but look how smooth her skin is! She’s gorgeous, although her hair could use a little work.

  60. mel

    jennifer,

lol. Are you too young to know the song “Sunglasses at Night”?

  61. Mehdi thinks Bostondirtdogs are scum

I think the person who did the sketch of the Alabama Leprechaun was the same person who did this portrait.

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8

“I just want the GOLD BABY!”

  62. mel

    ray,

Did you see Wang with 19? Hughes having more wins than Kennedy even though Kennedy will have more starts?

  63. mel

Why is that commissioner wearing a red blazer?

  64. Wolf In Pinstripes

Could you imagine a friend or family member getting married and having this conversation?:

“Who is she? When do we get to meet her?”

“I have a sketch of her.”

    Weird.

  65. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Not sure that I heard of it, maybe if I listened to it i’d know it. I was young when it was released.

  66. Boston Dave

    raymagnetic,

they must like the Yanks to do well if they are predicting the starters ERA to be right around 4.00.

Does anyone know what the starters ERA was last season?

  67. Jax

Yep Hal looks like his mom.

  68. mel

    Jennifer,

Good song with stupid lyrics. It came out in when videos were “invented”.

  69. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    Team pitching was a 4.49

  70. Mehdi thinks Bostondirtdogs are scum

I also heard that the Mothra twins were the maids of honor.

    http://pub32.bravenet.com/photocenter/remote/2724789253/16D56246A4.jpg

  71. Mick

Hey anyone with extra innings having probs with todays game…
    Boxing????
    Thanks

  72. raymagnetic â„¢

Mel I did see Wang will win 19. They think Kennedy will only pitch 119 innings this year. They do however believe Moose will pitch 167 innings. I can’t see Phil pitching 188 innings this year although he did pitch 160 innings I believe in the minors the year before last.

I was joking about he WHIP’s and ERA’s though. They have those two stats backwards.

  73. mel

I loved the Steinbrenner in the field video and that sign looks sharp!

  74. mel

LOL. Steinbrenner looks like the Pope riding the cart and waving.

  75. Jake

OK, does anyone else find this picture of Matsui mildly creepy? A drawing of his wife? Ever heard of a camera? Strange to say the least. Perhaps he wishes to protect her identity, but come on. What is he afraid of? He plays for the New York Yankees.

  76. Jax

Man George looks really old. As that Felix Lopez?

  77. raymagnetic â„¢

Damn those Red Sox are some cry-babies about their trip to Japan. I can’t believe the writer actually believes that David Ortiz has a clutchiness factor that he can turn on and off.

    Source – http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?articleid=1082964&srvc=rss

“The time change hit Ortiz perhaps as hard as any player, with the Sox’ DH going through sleepless nights during both his first and third days in Japan. He said the second day was when the jet lag hit him like a ton of bricks, although the feeling of uneasiness hasn’t gone anywhere.
“By the sixth inning, you start feeling it,” he said. “Mentally you try to get through it, but your body isn’t getting the signals.”

The most visible example of Ortiz’ struggles came in the Red Sox’ season opener when, with the Red Sox trailing by a run in the eighth inning, the usually clutchest of performers found his bat a bit slow. The result was a weak pop up to left field and a hitter searching for a solution.

“You fight it,” Ortiz said. “When I went up to the plate after my third at-bat it was a serious fight. You know normally I’m the type of guy who likes that late-game situation, but that was tough.”

  78. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

    BAD APPLE!

  79. JOHNMVP.COM

    “have you seen Igawa’s wife?”

No, do you have a penciled drawing of her?

  80. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond

Okay, I’ll say it: The whole thing’s a little creepy.

  81. Kelli in Conn.

Igawa’s luggage is ready to be sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre or lower.

  82. gootman

Matsui: “It took me like three hours to finish the shading on (her)upper lip. It’s probably the best drawing I’ve ever done.”

  83. YankeesLuv

Kind of funny that he’s holding up a picture of a drawing. I wonder if he drew it himself, but congrats Matsui. :)

  84. Sam

    GO HIDEKI!!!

  85. SHUT UP CHAVEZ

is matsui married to a papper sheet?

  86. Sterling Steiner

It’s all a lie, he only did it for the money from Jeter, and Abreu.

  87. Yankees Chick

is she horrible disfigured? just really camera-shy? and what happened to all the crayons? couldn’t he have at least colored it in for us?

  88. todd

this women looks like the actress on charlies angel…wow!

  89. David

It’s actually a very sad story. Her name is Sun. She was on Oceanic Flight 815 from Sydney, Australia bound for Los Angeles. Hideki-san has been looking everywhere for her.

  90. richmond upon james

Oh I love me some Matsui gossip! She doesn’t look half bad there and kudos for doing something a bit different. I’m just happy for Matsui, he’s always a quiet guy that works and plays hard. You really can’t ask more than that. Cheers!

  91. Gamera

In Japan, this is what celebs often do when they marry non-celebs… to help preserve the anonymity of the new spouse, if only for a little longer. It’s also of course considered a little funny too.

  92. MJR

The paper cuts are going to hurt like a &8%$!

  93. kishan nunkoo

    hello
    where r u
    who r u

  94. preferadoll

Yeah, rumor has it that Matsui has “Truly loved her” since the day he drew her..

  95. LC

Matsui and Canceso better watch their new wifes….Arod may hit on them!

  96. robby parker

Conseco had plastic surgery to remove the stretch marks from the corners of his mouth….after his wife`s boob job.

  97. Persi

I don’t get the “civilian” part. As opposed to what? Kamikaze pilot? I am trying to get my son married off. Can someone draw me a wife for him too? Persi

  98. Shirley Hecht

I was just wondering if you knew of a very nice gentleman around 70? How about drawing him for me?
