New medallions in place tomorrow

March
28

Got this press release from the Yankees. If you’re in the Bronx on Saturday, you’ll probably be able to see this from a reasonable distance:

NEW YORK YANKEES TO UNVEIL NEWLY RE-CREATED EAGLE MEDALLIONS FOR MAIN ENTRANCE OF NEW YANKEE STADIUM

The New York Yankees will unveil newly re-created “Eagle” medallions and lift them into place at the main entrance of the new Yankee Stadium on Saturday (3/29) at 8 a.m. A crane will be used to hoist these medallions on both sides of the recently installed gold-leafed stone “Yankee Stadium” sign. The process should be completed by noon.

The medallions, standing at 7 feet 4 inches in diameter, were re-created for the New York Yankees based on those from the original 1923 Stadium main entrance. They were modified to appear more dimensional and dynamic in an attempt to capture a more athletic spirit. The originals were removed in the 1974-1975 renovation.

I guess these are what they look like:

Thanks for the warning. Everyone in this city is a bit nervous about anything that’s being done with a crane.

  7. rb15

very cool – i love how the new stadium is classic on the outside, modern on the inside. like the yankees themselves. ;)

  8. Doreen

Do the remind anyone else of the Anheuser-Busch symbol?

“very cool – i love how the new stadium is classic on the outside, modern on the inside. like the yankees themselves”

    nice one RB

I loved the red ticket booths – don’t think they are coming back

If they don’t have “a bat” where is everyone gonna meet??

The inside looks a little too Star Trek Next Gen for me – but I’m sure I’ll get used to it

  10. desti(NY) 2008

Look for a 10 MPH differential of fastballs with Mike Mussina vs. LHP Andrew Miller in tonight’s exhibition game in Miami.
Better yet, as described by John Sterling & Suzyn Waldman.

  11. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

RB: I’d disagree. I’d say the Yankees are modern on the outside and classy on the inside ;)

  12. Yanksrule57

    Countdown,

Great picture. You can really see how they paid tribute to the original design WRT the new stadium.

Good morning all. Woke up late and just read through the comments. Everyone’s so chatty this morn’!

Anyway, I want to thank everyone for making this a fun place to visit. Even though it’s a mostly anyonymous forum where we can basically say anything we want, it’s a surprisingly civil forum. Using the guidelines that PeteAbe gives us we can chat, rant, brag, rag, tease, and debate without anyone getting hurt. In this forum, without anyone’s feelings getting hurt on the playground. (I’m sure there’s some kind of thesis in there if there are any psychology grad students here.)

    Trisha,

I’m not a bandwagonner, but I want to welcome you to the blog. I consider myself a regular based solely on the frequency that I post. But the guys (and gals) here have made me feel welcome.

What’s my point? Even the most vile humans are welcome here. No, I’m not talking about lawyers. I’m talking about Red Sox fans. We have two (2) guys who come here on a regular basis and are welcomed because they know the drill. Treat others with respect and they’ll get in return. The passive-agressives are dealt with quickly and usually don’t come back. But there’s one guy who’s pretty persistent, anti-pettitte. But the non-believers are shunned here. lol.

Okay, stepping off soapbox. Just wanted to thank PeteAbe and the gang for being so cool.

  14. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

mel, you’re easily one of the coolest. Even if you’re a Lakers fan. ;)

  15. mel

    Rebecca,

You’re so sweet, but then I don’t think you could say a mean thing about anyone! I mean, you even have a Red Sox fan as one of your best friends!

Okay, they keep trying to hide gameday from us, but here’s the link. What’s with those Rays?

One day I’ll get to the bottom of this gameday mystery. One day.

  19. mel

    Brandon,

Check it out. men on 1st & 2nd score on a fielding error. ?!?!.

  20. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

oh boy Maddon’s title is in jeopardy

  21. desti(NY) 2008

Over the past 31 Major League Baseball seasons, only three teams have managed to repeat the following year as World Series champions (the 1977-78 New York Yankees, 1992-93 Toronto Blue Jays, and the 1998-2001 Yankees, who won a trio of titles). No team since the 2000-01 Yankees has even managed to make a return visit to the Fall Classic the following October.

In fact, only once in the past five years has a defending World Series champion even managed to make the playoffs; the 2005 Red Sox, who were quickly ousted by the eventual champion White Sox in an ALDS sweep.

  22. mel

    Brandon,

Not watching the game, are you? Did Maddon blow a gasket after the double & triple?

  23. wood is good

For anyone remembering this question from, like, two months ago! — The “missing” parts of the Y in Yankee and M in Stadium will be included on the edges of stonework these medallions are in.

Man, I am soooo bored at work to be writing that….

Plus…I just want Monday to get here!!

  24. Ranting Guy

    DestiNY –
    How bout dem ‘08-’09 Yanks?

  25. Ranting Guy

    Mel –

he didn’t blow a gasket, but he had his eye on the bat boy.

  26. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

3 – 2 Maddon must be getting ready to plow the catcher next inning

  27. mel

    Ranting Guy,

    What happened?

  28. Ranting Guy

    I don’t know, Mel.

I saw an opportunity for innuendo that sounded like Maddon wanted to do something kinky with the bat boy, and I took advantage of it.

That’s about all I can tell ya … I’m procrastinating at work too but I can’t get the game on.

  29. mel

    RG,

Yeah, at first I thought he was ogling the bat boy, but then I thought that maybe the bat boy interfered with the ball allowing guys to score from 1st & 2nd. Although, he’d have to literally stick the ball in his pocket and run around the field.

Which team had the bat girls tanning themselves in those collapsible chairs. That was funny.

  30. Ranting Guy

I’m making jokes about a manager ogling the bat boy in a game I can’t even see. So, this is what my workday is reduced to … damn, I need a more interesting job!

  31. Dennis-Costanza (sox fan)

    desti(NY)-

Thanks for the Friday afternoon stat buzz-kill. It is a daunting task to repeat which makes the late nineties Yanks all that more impressive.

All: Good Luck on Monday. It will be great to have the regular season in full swing.

Take Care and have a good weekend. -dennis

  32. Doreen

    Off topic –

I need some help from someone familiar with public transportation in the city.

My daughter and her friends want to take the LIRR into Manhattan on Sunday. They would go into Penn Station, which is at 33rd, right? They want to end up at West 50th Street. Does anyone know the best route? They’re game to take the subway (unlike her mom!). Thanks in advance!

  33. Jimmy 27

    Doreen:

A C or E train. very easy right underneath Penn

  34. Patrick

“Which team had the bat girls tanning themselves in those collapsible chairs. That was funny.”

Wait what? Was this during spring training this year?

  35. Andrea

Doreen: the best thing for NYC public transportation:

    http://www.hopstop.com

It’ll give you the route with the last walking or the route with the least amount of transfers. It’s a great resourse. And if they have internet on their cell phones, you can get it there too.

  36. gayle

Doreen tell them to take the N or R from Penn Station and get off at 49th street or they can take the 1 or 9 and get off at 50th

  37. gayle

oh the N/R stop gets off at 49th and 7th and the 1/9 stop is 50th and Broadway

  38. pat

    Doreen

Tons of choices from Penn station area B, D, N or R from 34th street to Rockefeller Center. A, C, and E from Penn Station.

If there are 3 or 4 of them, it might be cheaper to share a cab than pay for the subway though. Taxi stand right in front of Penn Station.

  39. Ranting Guy

    Doreen

Yes, you could go in to Penn Sta on the LIRR.
Penn Station is directly under MSG.
    It covers 31st-33rd Streets between 7th & 8th Aves.
From the LIRR, walk towards 7th Avenue.
The 7th avenue local subway has a stop at 50th St.

If you’re not familiar with the subway, it’s the line with the red numbers. Take the number 1 train uptown just 2 stops. That’s Broadway & 50th St. They’ll be between 7th & 89th Avenues.

On the way back, they’ll look for the 34th St / Penn Station stop.

Or, they could just walk up 7th Avenue if it’s a nice day … the 17 blocks from 33rd St should take a few ticks over half an hour.

  40. Ranting Guy

That’s 8th Ave not 89th Ave .. sorry for the tyo.

  41. Andrea

see all the suggestions? That’s why I said hopstop.com. That way you can put in the exact address you want. :)

  42. Ranting Guy

That’s 8th Ave not 89th Ave … sorry for the typo.

  43. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

They shouldn’t go over to 8th! 8th is disgusting!!

  44. raymagnetic â„¢

    Doreen,

    Go to http://hopstop.com

That website is like mapquest for big cities with public transportation systems.

  45. raymagnetic â„¢

I see Andrea already beat me to it. Hopstop is definitely a good website if you want to know the best ways to get around the 5 boroughs via public transportation.

  46. ray

    Hi Mel,
I was just reading your earlier posts a little while ago. As one of those vile human beings…LOL…ouch…ouch (a Red Sox fan) I appreciate the fact that you, Rebecca, and some others are kind enough to let us visit this Yankee blog. I’m not referring to you when I say this, but I’m not sure that some Yankee fans realize how fortunate they are to have this blog.

Whether one agrees or not with Peter, I don’t see how anyone could argue that he is not one of the hardest working blog writers in baseball. In the thread about the 50 most popular blogs I took a few minutes to look at some of them. One of the Red Sox blogs had a decent posting in it, but there was only one entry for the day and a grand total of two comments. I am spoiled by this blog!!!

  47. Doreen

    Wow -

    Thanks everyone!

I will try hopstop, but I’m going to print out this thread, too.

    Doreen

  48. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

    for god sake folks.

Doreen, TAKE THE 1 or 9 train and get out at 50th St.

  49. Jimmy 27

Heyman on the fan – for those who care

  50. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    *giggles* Oh, subways.

When I was in London I had a motto: Find the Tube, find home. I would wander wherever I wanted, as long as I could find a tube station I could eventually get back to my flat.

    Worked wonders.

Except on the couple of occasions I couldn’t find a tube station, but that’s not the point.

  51. Jimmy 27

    Newsflash
Heyman: Yanks won’t make the playoffs.

  52. Mr. Stats

Mr. Stats loves this bloggity also as a Red Sox visitor. and I can’t explain why?

  53. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

heyman saying the yanks don’t make the playoffs because of the young pitching.

meanwhile, what about the sox young pitching. FINE. let them all write us off…we’ll see come October

  54. Andrea

ray–you can even ask hopstop to get you from NY to Boston. It tells you to get on the acela. I think that’s funny.

  55. Jimmy 27

    Mikeeff
and Pettite’s back….. Beckett has back problems too

  56. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Who cares about what the predictions are in March?

Let’s care about what actually happens in October ;)

Now we know why you Red Sox fans love to come here and antagonize Yankee fans. Don’t worry Ray, when your team becomes as popular as the Yankees maybe you guys will have a beat writer blog as good as this one. ;)

  58. mel

    ray,

good to chat. as always. lol.

p.s. I’ll be cheering for the C’s, it worked last time!

Does anyone remember what year the Orioles were leading the east all the way through the AS Break, then fell apart in the second half? This was very recent..

  61. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

ok john hry man shows how really stupid he is.
when asked which manager is most likely to be fired first he says gibbons…ok i agree with that, then he says McClaren from the Mariners.
The Mariners who 5 minutes ago he said would take the Wild Card.

  62. Stacey

I was wondering when they were going to insert them.
Maybe I’ll wake up early, and check it out for myself.

  63. MikeEff ( Shelley: Everyday )

i saw that clip the other day Brandon. hilarious!

  64. Jimmy 27

    Rebbecca,

I don’t put any stock in the predictions. Or, no way is Heyman going to make me lose my optimism.

Except Steve Phillips If he picks the yankees to win .. we could be in trouble

  65. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Kevin: Was this 1997?

  66. raymagnetic â„¢

    Andrea,

    very funny clip

  70. Jimmy 27

    Anyone
Which of the Bronx Triange are still considered rookies officially?

  71. RSM

Anyone have any idea what happened to the original medallions?

  72. mel

    Brandon,

Thanks. That really made my day. You could just see him envisioning “their” child as the future Homerun King.

  73. Dennis-Costanza (sox fan)

RSM: Manny sold them on EBAY but left the check in his glove compartment for 3 years…

  74. Jax

I wish they would have did the upper deck facade like the original stadium had.

  75. Jimmy 27

RSM I fear they may be in a land fill somewhere.

    Hopefully someone salvaged them.
If they could be found it would be cool to put them up somewhere around the new park.

  76. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

we should all be so lucky to have Arod as a dad

  77. ray

    raymagnetic,
What would you do if we didn’t come in here to antagonize you guys?? Just kidding!

  78. Doreen

    MikeEff -

hopstop.com sent me on the E, but looking at the subway map, it looks like the 1 line lets me avoid 8th Avenue. And the stops are about equi-distant from where I need to be on both ends (Penn Station and 50th St). Do I have that right?

    Thanks, again, everyone!
