Pettitte update: Another bullpen

Peter Abraham
March
28

Andy Pettitte threw a 25-pitch bullpen session back in Tampa and remains scheduled to start a minor-league intrasquad game on Sunday.

“As far as during my bullpen and stuff like that, I feel great,” Pettitte told the AP. “It loosened up good. Do I still feel it walking around? Yeah. Sunday is a good day. I need to get some good work in. That’s all I’m looking for now.”

    Andy, you’re killing me.

    I loosened up well.

    Not good. Well.

  2. Guiseppe Franco

Hey, if Pettitte can throw 200 IP this season and help this team win, I couldn’t care less if he spoke gibberish fluently.

Guiseppe: I want to agree, but I spend too much time writing. That kind of thing gets to me!

    “Andy, you’re killing me.

    I loosened up well.”

Let’s recap. In addition to avoiding every manner of temptation known to man, being generous with their money and time, being devoted family men, working seven-day weeks, ignoring huge salary upgrades to stay in one city their entire career, being perfect at the plate/on the mound, being perfect in the field, being friendly with a band of jackals who want nothing more than to tear them down, AND saying the right thing to every single person every single day in every single way — but still being honest!…now we need our athletes to have perfect grammar, too?

At least fans aren’t demanding ;-)

Let’s hope he’s ready by the 4th game.

    :-P

(oh, and as much as I love Andy–and trust me, I do–he did spend two years in Houston.)

Rebecca – I am with you. Like fingers on a blackboard. But in Andy’s defense, he’s certainly not the only one.

  11. Guiseppe Franco

Rebecca: I understand. We all have our pet peeves.

I saw your post on PA this morning. Nicely done. I’m second in command over there.

I think the yankees should DL pettitte and backdate it to his last mlb appearance.. that still puts him in line to start against the rays and until then we can take an extra BP arm, maybe try patterson in an MLB spot or take an extra bench player to deal with the looming suspensions (gardner?)

  16. tony

jeez Lupica has another book out??

  17. Doreen

That’s disappointing news about Bobby Murcer. Hope he’s feeling better really soon.

  18. Cory

Linguistics is a descriptive field, not a prescriptive one. So, yes, the way to put that most clearly and in a way that does not rub people the wrong way in a formal setting would be to say “well,” but this does not mean that “good,” context considered is wrong, per se.

Wouldn’t saying “well” when we’ve all heard Andy talk before make it sound like a preprepared sound bite? I’m not saying that it wasn’t anyway, but the fact that this conversation is happening at all makes it clear that his tone matters.

Language is fundamentally for communication, and if you can get the right thing across by breaking the (descriptive) rules occasionally, I don’t see how that can be bad.

“Joe G on the FAN at 5:00″

hope he shuts up Fatcessa and Fruitloops

  20. Todd Drew

Andy didn’t write that. He was quoted. Responding to a question with the tape running isn’t as easy as we all think.

  21. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

oh and if Brian Cashman is reading this since he reads this blog, yes Brian that is what we call Francesa and Russo = Fatcessa and Fruitloops

  22. mel

Yes, it’s a peeve, but we have to remember where Andy grew up. We’re talking about a state where “ain’t” is the state word. It’s a different world in Texas, where I spent my formative years. I got teased mercifully when I moved and quickly dropped the y’alls and the aints.

The worst thing is when athletes use adjectives in place of adverbs. “It went quick” argh!!!! (Jeter’s one of the biggest offenders on that one).

  23. saucY

“It loosened up good.” the grammer check in word says it’s okay, so it’s okay with me ;)

  24. Jimmy 27

    Cory,

    nice input.

  25. mel

    uh, that’s mercilessly.

  26. Doreen

    Mel –

    Oops!

  27. Jimmy 27

you know what really grinds my gears…….

    using “then”
    when you mean “thAn”
“The Yankees are better THAN the sox”

  28. mel

    Doreen,

Y’all wouldn’t believe how I got teased something merciless! It aint fair!

  29. mel

    Jimmy,

    Your instead of you’re!!!

  30. Jimmy 27

    Mel
    YOU ARE right

  31. saucY

that one bothers me too jimmy.

i wouldn’t have thought twice about Andy’s quotes though.

  32. Clare

I wouldn’t normally bring up this dead horse, but since we’re discussing grammar, I’m going to. :)

Heyman has an article on Canseco, which incidently supports SJ44’s take on why Canseco is smearing ARod (hint: it’s all about money).

“As for today’s game, the Yankees won on four home runs. Matt Carson hit one of them and the other three came from — I kid you not — Brett Gardner, Alberto Gonzalez and Justin Christian. Granted, Christian has a little more pop than you might expect, but still, you don’t exactly show up at the ballpark expecting to see any of those guys send one over the fence, much less all three.

After his home runs, Gardner reached base only one other time on a throwing error by the shortstop, but it was an error that seemed to be caused by Gardner’s speed, with the shortstop suddenly realizing he had to rush his throw to first base.

hit Gardner in the mouth he hits a HR the same week

  38. gayle

So far most interesting thing from Girardi is that he see Cano batting 7th in the lineup so Pete you need to re-adjust your projected lineup again lol

Also says he will try and keep the #5 batter protecting Arod there pretty much all the time but would not say who that person is but he expects big things from that person.

Player who he got psyched the most from spring training that made him think he was going to be hot was Cano

  39. whozat

Well, I hope that portends more hard-hit liners for Brett. If he can start putting the ball in the gaps or get his walks back up, he’ll be a useful player. If he can do both, he could be a solid MLB regular in CF.

  40. kill-schill(ing)

Pete- I’m in the parking lot @ dolphins stadium. Any line-ups? Want a beer? Gate e12

  41. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

he also said he sees him batting anywhere in the lineup and may be a # 3

my candles will be lit for him

  43. whozat

“he also said he sees him batting anywhere in the lineup and may be a # 3″

Someday, I assume. Bobby’s a perfect fit there, unless he spends all season in a slump like he had early last year.

  44. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

So guys, my brother just told me that the Mavs are letting bloggers into the press area…

  45. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

    leave Kidd alone Rebecca

  46. gayle

rebecca as I am running out the door to go to the gym yes the NBA made them change their policy BUT there is a whole history behind this. Mark Cuban really messed this up. Will report more when I return OR you can go to Neil Best’scolum he has a story about it up there today or actually go to the Dallas Morning News as they are the ones that have really been affected by it as their beat writer-blog guy was banned from the locker room

  47. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

    MOST LIKELY LINEUP

    #1 Damon
    #2 Jeter
    #3 Abreu
    #4 Rodriguez
    #5 Posada
    #6 Matsui
    #7 Cano
    #8 Giambi
    #9 Cabrera

  48. Mike Eff ( Shelley: anytime, anywhere)

For the time being, I’d like to see how things go with giambi batting 5

  49. Andrea

I know I’m late on this, but cory’s not totally right. The thought makes sense, but In reality, the study of linguistics and the practice of proper grammar are 2 separate entities.

  50. Brian from PA

i don’t really think the “most likely” lineup will have Giambi batting 8th….. last year he was injury plagued and extremely streaky and was still plugged into the 5 hole whenever he was available. i have no doubt in my mind that he’ll be there again this season, at least to start. no chance Giambi bats 8th.

  51. G. Love

Gammons just posted his pre-season predictions. Yankees aren’t in the playoffs in his predictions, but he threw us a bone and gave Joba rookie of the year, mentioned Phil in the Cy Young group and gave Arod 3rd place in MVP (Manny was 1st–shock).

    However, the thing that made want to vomit;

“Manny Delcarmen, Red Sox. He could be one of the best relievers in the game.”

He just can’t stop himself. He really can’t.

  52. Jimmy 27

    Wow
Joba is rookie of the year – Hughes in the Cy young conversation – yet the yanks don’t make the playoffs – makes no sense.

Manny will not be MVP – repeat will not.

  53. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

I have a feeling that if someone asked Pettite who his best friend was or has been for the past few years, he would reply with either “my wife”, or “God”. Definitely not “Roger Clemens”.

  54. Guiseppe Franco

Yeah, that Gammons prediction doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

If Joba wins ROY and Hughes is in the Cy Young race, the Yanks are going to win the AL East by a half dozen games or more unless the rest of the team collapses.

I’m not a Gammons basher like most on this blog because I believe he’s still one of the top baseball writers in the country.

  55. kill-schill(ing)

Just had long converssation with joe mcillvane about santana trade. Fascinating. Details tomorrow, if sober and I can remember. Mcillvane was font of info re: smith and cashman.
