The Yankees left Tampa yesterday. But first they renamed Legends Field for owner George Steinbrenner.

Hideki Matsui got married and won a bet at the same time. This notebook also has word on Andy Pettitte, Johnny Damon, Jeff Karstens, some cuts and other news.

I’m flying to Miami this morning as the Yankees are playing the Marlins tonight. It will be an interesting day for Joe Girardi, who was fired by the Marlins in 2006. Check back later for updates and the lineups. Mike Mussina will be on the mound.

It’s process of elimination time. Bruney, Ohlendorf, or Patterson ?

  5. rb15

hideki’s wife looks pretty, i guess.

flying to miami from tampa? geez… is that 2 hours by car?
i could be wrong, but i think checking in, claiming luggage, waiting for takeoff, etc… would make a flight longer than driving.

  7. Doreen

Nah, saucy, Tampa is at least 4 hours drive from Miami, probably closer to 5. You’d be surprised how huge (long) Florida is!

My mom lives near Fort Lauderdale, which is north of Miami, and we drove there from Orlando, and that took 4 hours. Tampa is, what, an hour or so from Orlando.

  8. Bob C

It’s about 4-5 hours from Tampa to Miami.

  9. JT

Forget Razner. I’d rather have good pitchers (Traber, Patterson and Olendorf) who can go 2-3 innings rather than a mediocre pitcher who can go 4-5 a couple times a month.

  10. Dewey

So neither of the Marlins’ games will be broadcast on TV? Oh, man! I really wanted to watch some baseball today & tomorrow… :/

  11. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Dewey, Instead you are stuck listening to Suzy and John. :(

  12. jay destro

pete, get a cuban sandwich while in miami

  13. whozat

“I’d rather have good pitchers (Traber, Patterson and Olendorf) who can go 2-3 innings rather than a mediocre pitcher who can go 4-5 a couple times a month.”

Since when can Traber go 3 innings?

Also…what about spot starts? They’re going to want someone for those too.

  14. NY

    Saucy,
It is longer than that and with the traffic it is a lot easier to fly

  15. jay destro

my mom lives in sunrise which is right outside ft. lauderdale. when i go to tampa i pretty much say sorry ma i am here for baseball, see ya another time.

Since I’m sure to most ballplayers, except Pavano, playing well means as much as the money, part of me is pulling for Bruney and a successful season. He’s a professional ballplayer, so he can excel.

    Go Yanks.

  17. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    How’s Pavano’s rehab coming along?

I got a feeling we’ll see Pavano and Humberto Sanchez on the roster this September.

  18. Fran

I don’t think we’ll ever see Pavano on the mound for the Yankees again.

  19. whozat

    “I got a feeling we’ll see Pavano”

I will personally place banana peels all over his home to make sure this does not happen.

  20. Countdown (tick, tick, tick)

    why?

If he can throw strikes, let him pitch. if he can’t, then they won’t call him up.

  21. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge

Has anyone seen a marriage certificate for Matsui? How do we know he really got married?

  22. mac

this is great.i posted the 1sts round before… posada beat out mo in the first round. it’s an ncaa bracket tourney for worst offseason signings/trades.

  23. Arenoso

google maps says its a 4:08 hour drive from steinbrenner field to dolphing stadium. just take I-75 and you’re set.

also, Pete, go to ‘El Cacique’ rest. it is next to the Miami Art Museum, great cuban cuisine at good prices.

  24. whozat

“If he can throw strikes, let him pitch.”

Because I’d rather use those innings to see some promising youngsters.

  25. saucY

oops. guess i was wrong. i just remember going from east coast FL to tampa, but now that i think about it, i started a lot further north than miami (boynton beach).

i’d still drive though. i find it relaxing. (especially in FL)
