Boy, as excited as I am about the Yankees season to start, I can see why many "pundits" have the Yankees not making the playoffs, because the starting pitching is shaky to say the least. I predicted 98 wins for the Yankees in 08 but I'm starting to be converted to the camp that says 87-90 wins and will not make the playoffs because of too many question marks in the rotation.

1. You can't count on Mussina, anything positive that he gives the Yankees will be gravy. And now with the injury to Andy, Mussina is now paired up with other teams' #2 starter, ie, Hallady on Wednesday. Doesn't look good. Tonite was not a good sign.

2. Pettitte is injured and who knows how that will affect him throughout the season. Unknown at this point. Needs to step up and be a solid #2.

3. Wang, his stuff has looked great at times this spring but because he counts so heavily on his defense and they have let him down the last few games, could that translate to a subpar season? He's not an ace by a long shot but he needs to pitch like one for the Yankees to be successful. Not a good scenario.

4. Hughes, his problem is that he is not economical enough with his pitches at this point in his career. He needs to get to the 6th and 7th innings at least, and has not been doing that. Could be the ace, could be inconsistent, hard to tell.

5. IPK - imo is the wildcard. Can be really good if he's hitting his spots, again another pitcher that pitches to contact and counts on the defense to bail him out and if he's not hitting his spots or gets an ump that won't give him the borderline calls he is very hittable. I like him alot though and predict 12-14 wins.

6. Horne - should be the first pitcher called up because he has the best stuff of any SP at Scranton, should make 10 or so starts, will be interested to see how his season goes.

7 - Unknown pitcher aquired by trade - IMO Cashman will make a trade for a SP at the deadline, I hope that the Yankees are not too far out by then.

Jimmy, I talk a good game and I have no difficulty standing up for myself anytime, anyplace, but in real life I'm one of those people who hurt for the world. It really isn't a fun way to go!
