Coming tomorrow: The Cashman Q&A
-
- March
- 29
Check the blog tomorrow for our exclusive reader Q&A session with general manager Brian Cashman, complete with audio.
We asked for questions last week and over 500 readers from around the world responded. Cashman answered nine questions (with a few follow-ups by me). I just transcribed the interview (2,200 words, sheesh) and it will be posted tomorrow morning.
Meanwhile, Yankees-Fish tonight at Dolphins Stadium. Back later with the lineups.

Couldn’t you para-phrase his responses?
“Couldn’t you para-phrase his responses?”
A lot of fans REALLY like to read into quotes from management. Paraphrasing would be asking for trouble…Cash says “good option off the bench” and Pete paraphrases to “useful bench player” and all of a sudden people are flying off the handle about one thing or another. Better to have the actual words
any of you guys watching the mlbtv premium preview??? Im really not seeing the difference here in the qualities
Corey – good point. The 1.2 stream is no different from the 700k stream.
The good news is, it appears the new 1.2 MBps stream will support widescreen which is awesome.
im watching it now and it keeps freezing for a few seconds every 30 seconds or so, incredibly annoying to watch
Yeah im not being blown away….im actually disappointed right now…This better not be how 1.2 is once the season starts
“The good news is, it appears the new 1.2 MBps stream will support widescreen which is awesome.”
That’s probably what they’re using the extra 500 Kbps to do
I refuse to install those extra plugins in order to check it out…my browser doesn’t need any more bloat, thanks.
Josh did you install the NexDef plugin on the site?
MLB.TV tends to be a ripoff, but if you are at college or something similar, you don’t have any other choice!
You have to add the plugin to see the difference.
it doesnt let u watch at all without installing the plugin.. at least onthe plus side you can resize the window to whatever u want.
Now the streams appear to be down… At least I can’t get in anymore… wtf!?
“but if you are at college or something similar, you don’t have any other choice!”
I got a slingbox that I put at my parents’ house in NY. The picture quality is usually quite good (even when I was living in California this summer) and it’s much more reliable than MLB.tv, especially on my mac.
And I didn’t even get the HD slingbox. That would likely look even better.
Pete –
2200 Words, wow. Sounds like it was a good thing he got called away after “only” 9 questions!
Actually, I’m looking forward to reading/listening to the interview. I know he’s a talk-y guy, but it seems to me he took the questions seriously enough not to give pat answers.
Doreen,
I’m with you. Half of us hang on everywhere and the other half want to pick him apart for what he says.
Should be enough there to make everyone happy!
Can’t wait to read it Pete.
By the way, did the Yankees install those new medallions? Any pictures available?
Are you guys using the new mlb.tv player? The old one kept ffreezing my computer but I haven’t had a problem with the new one.
I installed the HD plug in, started up the player. Don’t see much of a difference in the picture quality, but those hockey scores are very clear. Feed is choppy.
I am looking forward to reading the interview with Cashman. Brian has a tendency to talk a lot without saying anything.
As you guys could tell, I was very bored last night so I was reading Yankee stuff online. I found one funny story about Mike’s relationship with the young pitchers. Ian Kennedy said that his dad is 45 and Mike’s almost there and that Mike’s like a much older brother.
Also, Mark Feinsand’s using the “Big Three” tag to describe the pitching trio. Let’s hope THAT catches on and not Sherman’s “Generation Trey”.
Is there a manager/executive in baseball or in business in general who doesn’t like to talk a lot?
Matsui wedding revealed as prank.
Is the game on YES tonight, anyone know?
...Matsui wedding a prank? What’s your source? That’d be one hell of an April Fool’s joke!
The game tonight is on WCBS newsradio 880. No YES tonight.
One facet of SI sees 2008 ALE unfolding as follows:
“A look at the AL in predicted order of finish:
—-
EAST
New York Yankees
Beset by early injuries to an inadequate pitching staff, the Yankees got off to a terrible start last season before rallying to their 13th straight playoff appearance. The ride should be smoother in 2008, and there’s no reason this $200 million team can’t beat out Boston again the way it did for all those years.
With Chien-Ming Wang as a No. 1 starter, however, whether the Yankees can finally win a postseason series is a different matter. They’ve been eliminated in the first round three straight times.
The league-leading offense returns intact, but another reliable reliever would help. Success depends largely on young pitchers Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain, who is back in the bullpen to set up Mariano Rivera. Keep an eye on Andy Pettitte, determined to stay focused on the field despite his role in Clemens’ steroid scandal.
Boston Red Sox
Maybe the Red Sox will be the team that gets off to a tough start this time. The rotation is banged up and they’re on a long journey that takes them from Florida to Japan to California to Toronto before their April 8 home opener against Detroit.
Boston still has a deep squad with a solid bullpen and talented prospects ready to emerge, including center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury. David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez anchor the lineup again, the game’s most formidable 1-2 punch. Does a wild-card berth warrant an Irish jig by closer Jonathan Papelbon? It’d be hard to pick against Boston in any playoff series, as long as Beckett is healthy.”
With the roundup of likely suspects in the usual order of appearence behind them.
Mel ;
Generation Trey is goofy. “Young Triangle” might work.
Generation Trey is such a stupid name.
2,200 words!—I’d better revise my prediction for number of times Cashman uses the word “obviously.” OK, I predict it will be at least 25 times. Any other guesses?
“It’d be hard to pick against Boston in any playoff series, as long as Beckett is healthy.”
Not really, given that the rest of their rotation put up short, uninspiring performances last year. And Schilling’s done. Unless Matsuzaka and Lester all of sudden discovers how to throw strikes, I’m not really worried about them. They’re still a really good team, don’t get me wrong. I can’t slander Buchholz and pimp Hughes, Ian and Joba at the same time, it’d be hypocritical. Beckett and Buchholz could be a formidable (if jerky) 1-2 in the playoffs…but so could two of Wang, Pettitte, Hughes and Joba. They could be a dominant 1-4 in the playoffs.
Your paper needs some transcribers in India who can do that for you and charge like $2. You need to be blogging. I still have 23.5 hours per day where I am not reading your blog.
“Corey – good point. The 1.2 stream is no different from the 700k stream.”
I disagree. You don’t see the difference on a small/partial screen mode, but you see it in full screen mode. On my 17” monitor on full screen mode, it’s basically as good as (regular) TV.
I would be curious to see how it ports to a TV.
FINALLY!
The perfect gift.
Check it out boys and girls (and you too McLovin).
