Paulie can rest easy, Ensberg takes 11

Our great national nightmare is over. Morgan Ensberg has taken No. 11 and No. 21 is back in mothballs.

Chris Woodward had been wearing 11.

I thought Hawkins was now taking 21. Or did someone tell him he’d be better off not taking it.

  2. mel March 29th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Number 11 is such an odd number. I mean you hardly see it.

Everyone can stop freaking out about the number deal now. From O’neill to Betemit, it was just so much drama.

I guess it’s a good thing there wasn’t anything else to fuss about this spring.

We almost made it unscathed. Minor issues for Pettitte, Jeter, Henn, and Karstens.

WhooHoo, Monday can’t get here soon enough!

Don’t wish away the weekend. i am enjoying it, two peaceful days off of work.

  4. yanksrule57 March 29th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

Jeter wouldn’t tell the press if his finger was amputated. He will never give an opponent any information that might be used to their advantage.

Re the Marlins games on tv:

It figures. The Marlins are on FSN Florida alllllll season (they show nearly every game) yet the 2 games against the Yanks were not televised. The Marlins have some kind of deal that their games get priority over Tampa on FSNFL so I miss most of the Yanks games against the Rays. Feh!

  5. Cy Endfield March 29th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

“Jeter hid his right hand under his jacket so we could not see the wrap around his finger.”

    – Remember Pete, you said an injury is ALWAYS WORSE than what the team or the player is telling us.

  6. Fran March 29th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Cy – Jeter hurt his finger in batting practice. He then played in the game and had two at bats. I am sure if it was serious they would have sat him out tonight since it was an exhibition game.

weather.com still says pm showers. As far as I am concerned Monday cannot come quick enough so I can stop looking at the weather on a semi regular basis. Will be there bright and early for gates to open.

What number did the Rajah of Rehab wear – hope that did not jinx that number!!

  9. Andrea March 29th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

  11. Buddy Biancalana March 29th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Rudy May & Cecil Fielder also wore it.

  12. UtilityMan March 29th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

There was no freakin out….We just dont want anyone to wear #21 or #51 anymore.

Now that I have thought about it,Wilson Betemit does deserve to keep his #14.He has been there since July 31st,and Ensberg just made the team.So if he doesnt want to give it up,then he should get to keep it.

On more important things…what # will Billy Traber switch to???He wore #40 last year..but we know that wont happen this year.

Once Monday comes all this will be forgotten….then it becomes Baseball Season!!!

Ensberg to bring back greatness to #11 which Chuck Knoblauch desoiled …

dammit I was awake past the Hughes K, then Traber came in still ok Mo came in still awake, Farnsy The most exciting pitcher on the team was on , then Bruney, then Joba as soon as Moeller hit that inside the park HR Sterling just couldn’t call the game, the last thing I remembered was Ohlendorfh coming out the BP and then him and Suzyn just went on w/ this bit saying a players name that sounds like Sherman and Blommforts sounds like a law firm joke then I was knocked out

    how did Ohlendorfh do ?

  14. I make the champagne bottles pop...but the Yankees could do it in October (please, I'm dying here) March 29th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Opening Day is monday and I cannot wait!!! I’m leaving school early (shh, its not cutting if no one knows) just to watch the entire game on YES…since I couldn’t get tickets.

    I have a good feeling about the upcoming season…hope the team doesn’t disapoint… they can’t, they won’t.

BTW: When is Pettite starting again? And what exactly is his situation?

    GO YANKS!!!!

    Marcum rocked Yankee Prospects :D
    via Chad Jennings

“Juan Miranda may be finding his stroke just as the Yankees are about to break camp. On Saturday, Miranda went 3-for-5, including a three-run home run off Shaun Marcum, who will be in the Blue Jays big league rotation but pitched seven innings off the Triple-A game to get stretched out.”

“Alberto Gonzalez continued his outstanding hitting since coming to minor league camp. All three of his hits came off Marcum. Eric Duncan, Brett Gardner and Justin Christian also got their hits off the big leaguer and Chase Odenrieder hit a home run off him in the second inning.”

“hawkins now has 21, what an idiot. how did he not get the message. no one like hawkins should wear that number, it should be someone good”

someone had to, now it’s his job not to soil it

  27. Bronx Liaison March 29th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

It’s not Ensberg but Hawkins who is the threat to weat #21 Pete. He is wearing it as an homage to Roberto Clemente.

I might be in the minority here, and I loved Paul O’Neill as a player, but I don’t think it’s too big of a deal. We need to start picking our spots a bit about how many players get their jersey retired. Paulie was no doubt the heart and soul of the most recent dynasty, but Joe D, The Babe and Mickey he is not.

Pretty soon Yankees players will be wearing symbols as they run out of actual numbers. Either that or the infield will look like a defensive line – I don’t want my shortstop donning #96 and throwing to the first baseman who’s wearing #99.

  28. UtilityMan March 29th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

    Bronx Liason

Agreed #21 doesnt need to be retired…..Just worn by someone good again….Maybe AJAX one day,or Tabata.

Nothing against Ensberg…but will he be here next season???
    Will Hawkins be here???

  29. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 29th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

I like Hawkins’ intentions. Pity the number has to be 21.

  30. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 30th, 2008 at 12:01 am

SWB rocked Shaun Marcum today

Juan Miranda may be finding his stroke just as the Yankees are about to break camp. On Saturday, Miranda went 3-for-5, including a three-run home run off Shaun Marcum, who will be in the Blue Jays big league rotation but pitched seven innings off the Triple-A game to get stretched out.

Alberto Gonzalez continued his outstanding hitting since coming to minor league camp. All three of his hits came off Marcum. Eric Duncan, Brett Gardner and Justin Christian also got their hits off the big leaguer and Chase Odenrieder hit a home run off him in the second inning.

P.S. Action would probably wear it since his H.S. number was # 1 :) and Cano is wearing his favorite players number

  31. Bronx Liaison March 30th, 2008 at 12:02 am

    UtiliyMan

I can live with that and totally agree scrubs should not be able to don past star’s jerseys so easily. I agree, a guy like Tabata or AJax would be nice. Maybe Shelley will trade 17 to Hawkins, his type of passion would be more fitting.

  32. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 30th, 2008 at 12:03 am

Action would wear it since Cano has his favorite player’s number (# 24 Ken Griffey Jr.) he use to be #1 in H.S. so 21 could be the next step.

  33. Derek - RETIRE 21!!! (Please?!) March 30th, 2008 at 12:07 am

yall know how i feel about this…

trust hawkins will get some boo birds when he comes out of the pen.

  34. Brian (from PA) March 30th, 2008 at 12:07 am

i guess Hawkins felt weird wearing Clemens’ old jersey. maybe he figured it was tainted or something.

is anyone wearing 12 this year?

  35. Brian (from PA) March 30th, 2008 at 12:08 am

    also 19…who’s 19?

  36. Brian (from PA) March 30th, 2008 at 12:13 am

in fact i can’t remember anyone who’s worn 19 since Aaron Boone in 03…..oh Aaron Boone…i have your picture framed on my wall with Derek Jeter freaking out as you approach homeplate..and some infield dirt too with a little medallion saying its authentic.

  37. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 30th, 2008 at 12:13 am

it’s his job not to get boo’d Latroy is a big boy and no offense number 21 is not getting retired. I truely doubt it.

  38. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond March 30th, 2008 at 12:20 am

Buddy—Girardi wore #45, too! First half of 96.

  39. whoa March 30th, 2008 at 12:39 am

Hawkins should not have been allowed to wear #21.

  40. matt March 30th, 2008 at 12:44 am

I heard Hawkins has taken #21

  41. Derek - RETIRE 21!!! (Please?!) March 30th, 2008 at 2:02 am

brandon… we been through this on here before, this is why pete makes a point to mention the madness.

the general consensus is that besides Paul O’Neill being the greatest trade New York made since Babe Ruth (totally making up for Buhner v. Phelps), Consistently putting up numbers and being the best opposite field hitter that isnt named Tony Gwynn, and now, Jeter.. but Paul meant more to our dynasty through leadership by example, and more heart, determination, and love for the game than any athlete on their roster in that period. Ask George how much he meant to our organization.

Game 5 2001, Top of the 9th, Pauliee Pauliee Pauliee.

    21 is Paul O’Neill, Respect 21, Retire 21

  42. Patrick Bateman March 30th, 2008 at 3:01 am

Its great that Paul won a few WS rings with the Yankees. But he doesn’t get his number retired. Neither does Tino, Brosius, Knobby, David Cone, David Wells, Homer Bush, etc.

It was a classy thing for Ensberg to do, showing that he knows his Yankee history, instead of walking into a clubhouse and knowing nothing. But if he had worn Paul’s number, it wouldn’t have been a big deal.

  43. Patrick Bateman March 30th, 2008 at 3:04 am

Yankees already have enough numbers that are going to be retired soon.

42 (even though its already retired in all of MLB), 2, 13, 51.

I’d say in 5 years we’ll see someone wearing number 100.

  44. Jim Clark March 30th, 2008 at 9:29 am

Who was the player in the early 1970s who said “why don’t you issue 3, 4 or 5? You never see anyone wearing those numbers.”

  45. hmmm March 30th, 2008 at 12:16 pm

“hawkins now has 21, what an idiot. ”

    give me a break.

  46. tim boat March 30th, 2008 at 1:41 pm

If Paul O’neill were a member of any other major league team that won multiple championships, had a dynasty, and he was percieved as the heart and soul of multiple championship teams, his number would be retired no doubt. Why should the standards by higher or lower? Just retire it already.

  47. christheyankeesfan March 30th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Not everybody can have their number retired.

  48. hmmm March 30th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

“trust hawkins will get some boo birds when he comes out of the pen.”

wow, this is probably the stupidest thing i have ever read.

anyone who boos Hawkins for wearing a number should just to Shea.

  49. Pat March 30th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

How about Joba changing his number? 62 is an ugly baseball number.
