Pettitte, IPK deal back in Tampa

Peter Abraham
March
30

This just in from the minor-league intrasquad game in Tampa:

Andy Pettitte: 6 1 0 0 1 6. He threw 77 pitches.

Ian Kennedy: 5 4 0 0 1 5. No word on the pitch count. But he was supposed toi be dialed back to 75 or so today.

“I threw 77 pitches, and that’s what I needed,” Pettitte said. “It’s exactly what I wanted to do. I feel great. Everything felt good today. Got a lot of work in. Did I have to get to 77 pitches today because I’m a little short and behind everybody? Yeah. I’m ready for my start and just looking forward to continuing to build my strength up.”

Sounds like a great day for both if I’m reading the lines correct

(IP H R? What are the other ones?)

  3. Fran

Thanks for the update Pete. That is great news about Pettitte. Should be ready for his start next week.

By the way Pete you should have known you were in trouble flying Delta. The initials stand for Doesn’t Ever Leave The Airport!

  4. mel

I hope that was great pitching and not poor offense. lol.

Good to see Andy feeling better.

Nice start for Phil last night, and excellent final tuneups for Andy and IPK. If the Wanger and Moose can get squared away we’ll be all set. I’m hoping the Yanks come out of the gate playing well and not struggle the 1st month or two like recent years.

  8. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond

    Fantastic news. :)

  9. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Thanks guys =D

  10. rb15

    that’s good news.

  11. Jeff

    Yay!

I assume Andy pitched for Trenton while Kennedy pitched against SWB or was it the lower minor batters?

  13. Jeff NJ

Who pitches Saturday? I’ll be there.

  14. whozat

I think they faced each other, meaning that one faced AA hitters and the other faced AAA. Not sure which was which.

  15. Mick

    Hey Pete
You should do a Q&A with Bob Feller…. Interesting no?

  16. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and beyond

Andy pitched to AAA and Ian to AA

  17. Brian (from PA)

TOMORROW IS OPENING DAY. INCASE SOME OF YOU ALL DIDN’T KNOW.

    WOO.

  18. Laura

I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow. That would be a major bummer. Also guys, the game is going to be on ESPN for those of us living outside of the NY area and don’t get YES. Woohoo!

  19. Danny

Can someone who’s going to the opener tomorrow send me a postcard?

  20. Nick in SF

Less than 24 hours from Yankee baseball!!!

    Finally.

  21. Josh

great to see andy feeling good.

im SO excited about IPK though, i think hes going to be a great #5

  22. Chrissy

    Great outings for both. :)

  23. No sleep 'til Brooklyn

The Yankees are home. Tomorrow The Bronx comes alive.

  24. Brian (from PA)

even if it rains they should play through it. i don’t believe that opening day should be postponed.

  25. Brian (from PA)

well, time to wash all my Yankees jerseys. I’m thinking i’ll wear my authentic Posada jersey tomorrow. it’s a road Jersey but it’s the only non-number jersey i have. the road jerseys are sweet anyway.

  26. Brian (from PA)

excuse me, non-name jersey is what i meant. of course it has a number.

  27. whozat

“even if it rains they should play through it.”

Yeah…let’s risk injury on a sloppy field for the sake of sentiment.

  28. CB

Kei Igawa is the gift that keeps giving.

Unfortunately, the yankees have decided to give Igawa and Rasner spots in their AAA starting rotation. For Igawa this was expected (though a waste). With Rasner it was unclear whether the were going to put him in the pen in AAA or the rotation. They decided to keep him in the rotation – I assume that’s because they see him as a long man and want to keep him stretched out (can’t easily do that as a long man on a AAA team).

This has had a ripple effect across the organization’s system. Chase Wright was sent back to AA and it looks like Brett Smith is going to get bumped from AA to Tampa A ball.

Neither Wright nor Smith are great prospects. But nonetheless, I think Igawa being in the AAA rotation has more to do with his contract than anything else. At this point he still is so far from being a major league pitcher due to his poor command I think him taking up a spot in the AAA rotation is only hurting the development of other prospects.

Dan McCutcheon is in AA and has already been terrific there the second half of last season. He’s likely going to be ready for a promotion up to AAA very soon.

It’s tough to reserve a starting spot at Scranton for Igawa when there are so many arms in the system. I know that contract makes it difficult to do anything else and that keeping him in the AAA rotation may be the best way to trade him but it is detrimental to other guys in the system.

DELTA actually stands for Delay Everyone’s Luggage Through Atlanta

  30. Josh

    Kennedy threw 76 pitches.

  31. Jeff NJ

Man I was so bumming not getting IPK in my baseball draft yesterday. It’s an AL keeper league so we’re only really drafting rookies and free agents. I picked 6th. The order went Buchholtz, Joba, Ellsbury, Longoria and IPK. I would up taking Edgar Renteria, but didn’t feel great about it.

The Orioles just released Jay Gibbons, an HGH recipient, current or former players’ rep and a guy who once pulled off the baseball “hole in one” equivalent by managing to hit his wife in the head with foul ball while she sat in the stands.

The O’s are eating nearly $12 mil. in salary on Gibbons because they lost patience with his injry history. (Wish I could ask Peter Angelos what $12 million tastes like).

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=3320730

Make believe it’s really a story about Igawa.

  34. Doreen

    murphydog-

There was a recent television program that had a story line about a baseball player who was alleged to have used steroids and who hit a foul ball which killed the 3rd base coach, who was having an affair with his wife. I THOUGHT that was far-fetched. Not so much after reading your post that Gibbons hit a foul ball that hit his wife in the stands!

  35. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    That Gibbons story is great.

If you all want to see a delusionally optimistic Yankees preview for 2008, you know where to go.

  36. murphydog

    Doreen:

How about a story where a baseball player that wasn’t using steroids hit a foul ball that … Ah, nevermind. Nobody would buy the premise.

  37. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

murphydog: Are you a John Irving fan by any chance?

  38. Westerner99

Wow! I can’t believe Peter Angelos ate that much money. The trade market must have been nill for them to cut Gibbons.

  39. murphydog

Correction: Gibbons hit her in the rib. ( A little Biblical payback there) So it wasn’t really like a “hole in one,” more like an eagle.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=2601493

Rebecca: I read Garp, Cider House Rules and Hotel New Hampshire years ago but lost my taste for Irving. I read a lot, lots of different stuff. Currently reading Londonistan, by Melanie Phillips. Just finished re-reading To Kill a Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye. (Still can’t believe that Mockingbird was a first novel and that Salinger pulled off Catcher as a first person semi-monologue).

  40. Alan

    CB -

It’s a colossal waste to have Igawa in the starting rotation at AAA and clogging up a roster spot for a more deserving talent.
The Igawa we see is as good as he’ll ever get.

  41. myrtlebeachfan

ESPN’s predictions are pretty laughable. Not a single analysts puts the Yanks winning the WS, and there are a LOT of predictions listed. Lots of Yanks > Sox in AL EAST, though. Very few have AROD winning MVP.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....xpertpicks

Theyre better than the Yankees Suck predictions Pete posted, no offense Pete. You are just not high on the Yanks at all. Manny for MVP? Please. That’s Gammons-esque. And he knows he’s biased.

  42. murphydog

“Wow! I can’t believe Peter Angelos ate that much money. The trade market must have been nill for them to cut Gibbons.”

Andy McPhail continues to try put his new house in order.

  43. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    murphydog: Ah, I see.

  44. Brian (from PA)

“even if it rains they should play through it.”

Yeah…let’s risk injury on a sloppy field for the sake of sentiment.

well, i was thinking more along the lines of not messing with the rotation even more and having the players sit even longer after the off day from spring training, but whatever you want to think.

  45. whozat

“well, i was thinking more along the lines of not messing with the rotation even more and having the players sit even longer after the off day from spring training, but whatever you want to think.”

They have a day off tuesday. It wouldn’t mess with the rotation at all. If they don’t play, Wang pitches Tuesday instead of Monday, and everything continues as usual.

  46. hmmm

“murphydog: Are you a John Irving fan by any chance?”

A Prayer for Owen Meany is a favorite of mine.

  47. Brian (from PA)

“They have a day off tuesday”

Exactly. Off today, possibly postponement monday, off tuesday. most of the rotation would then be pitching on 7 days rest. That happened in 02, and it didn’t bode well for them, it was a rough April for the pitchers.

  48. Nick in SF

Rebecca: let’s just say optimistic, not delusionally so! At least until the Yanks lose a game, which will hopefully not happen until, what, May or June?

Murphydog: If you like Londonistan, you might also like America Alone by Mark Steyn. It’s very much the same theme, and the book tends to be pretty repetitive as well, but Steyn is a really funny writer. Both books are highly political and controversial so… not for all the Yankee LoHud crew.
