Not much to tell you. Same pitchers, same lineup tomorrow. “Sometimes it rains,” Derek Jeter said.

Brian Cashman said the weather forecast indicated rain through tomorrow afternoon, hence the decision to play tomorrow night.

Here’s Joe Girardi’s brief post-rainout press conference:

Chien-Ming Wang didn’t have much of a birthday to celebrate. But the Taiwanese media did get him a small cake.

So much for Opening Day. We’ll try it again tomorrow.

Jeter also added that “Baseball may be a religion full of magic, cosmic truth, and the fundamental ontological riddles of our time, but it’s also a job.”

Hell, maybe I’ll pop Bull Durham in. Though the Tigers and Royals have taken their clash to extras… and who can miss Hendrickson-Santana?

    HENDRICKSON

  2. Ryan March 31st, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Yet the radar is clear and showed that the rain would be over this afternoon. Makes no sense to not wait it out today.

Im surprised Girardi let the Taiwanese media in with that cake. surely nobody was allowed to eat any of it.

how soon do the Detroit papers start freaking out about the bullpen? (or have they been all along)

  17. murphydog March 31st, 2008 at 4:34 pm

I dunno. Somehow, an ice cream vending machine just doesn’t scream “Winning is Everything.” It’s too green tea, too Grandpa Joe. These are supposed to be men, gosh darn it, chaw chewing, tobacco spittin’ slayers of dragons and winners of divisions.

They can have all the ice cream they want after they win the World Series.

  18. gayle March 31st, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Mike I also just back home you must have been at a different stadium then me i gotthere about 945AM it started raining, like mist. around 11 it started a bit heavier and did not stop until about 215. It again is like a mist. I am freezing cold, my pants, jacket and hat are soaked.

I thought they would gt it in but when I saw Girardi and Cashman come on the field then there was no quickening of the pace in terms of plaers or grounds crew movin I knew they would not play the game.

However perhaps the people who are reading the weather maps for the stadium need to read them a bit better as from about 230 until now there is almost nothing. {erhaps the field was too wet who knows but I think they could have gotten it in. Now i hear it will rain all afternoon tomorrow so it will be worse conditions.

ALso although getting in the stadium and parking when I got there was great no issues. Getting out was a different story all together took me almost 2 hours to get home (including exiting the parking lot) for a ride that takes 35 minutes (including parking) getting in.

Finally can someone find out where the game will be broadcast tomorrow as the Nets are scheduled for YES and i need to set the Tivo

  19. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 4:35 pm

can they donate the ice cream machine to the Sox?

    Papi and Schilling wouldn’t mind.

Is ESPN seriously cutting away from a one run, bottom-of-the-11th game to a game in the top of the 1st? So frustrating!

LOL BD… neither would El Fatolo Calzone (Bartolo Colon) !!!

I just read they built three new McDonalds in Pawtucket, and an Olive Garden is going up soon. El Fatolo heaven !!!!!!!

  29. bronxbomber77 March 31st, 2008 at 4:44 pm

This Cubs/Brewers game is shaping up to be a pitcher’s duel… Gotta love the Z.

I read, think it was MLBtraderumors.com, a few months back, (sorry, no link, it just stood in my mind) that the NYY would be a possible destination if Sheets becomes a free agent.

Scared me to no end… didn’t the Yanks go down this road in 05? Except instead of Sheets, it was Pavano and Wright?

Isn’t Sheets ALWAYS injured? I don’t care if he’s 29 or not… If they spend $$$ on free agent picthing next year, I hope its for CC Sabathia, not Sheets…

  30. mel March 31st, 2008 at 4:44 pm

    gayle,

You’d think they’d have the sense to pre-empt the Nets game. Unless ESPN’s running it…Blah…

Just thought Id share this with you all…

One of my close friends is in the fish tank business, he has alot of high profile clients and just installed a fish tank in Jorge Posadas upper east side home. He was there all day today and he just sent me a picture of he and Jorge posing in front of the fish tank……Jorge looks like he is wearing a kimono, kinda weird, but whatever. The only bad thing about it, is my friend is a Mets fan and he hates the yankees.

  37. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 4:48 pm

    YAY ROYALS!!!

  38. gayle March 31st, 2008 at 4:48 pm

Jennifer like I said getting in was easy getting out was a pain now mind you pretty much everyone left at the same time as it was not until they called the game so that may have had something to do with it. In all the games I have been to I have never had that kind of problem.

Tomorrow night I am taking the subway in from the city asI will have to leave from work and it doesnt make sense to drive

  39. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    bronxbomber,

sheets is a definite risk. beckett, was also injured often. its a tough call and will depend on what some other team is willing to offer (in terms of years and total $).

the A’s still want a ton for Rich Harden and he’s always hurt. i am guessing sheets either stays with Milwaukee or some team overpays and gives him the money/years he’d get if he were never injured… who knows.

  40. yanksrule57 March 31st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Barry Zito’s fastball is 84 MPH on FSN. The Giants only have him signed for 6 more years including 2008.
And Kent just took him yard. Ha!

  41. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    Is Barry Zito done?

  42. saucY March 31st, 2008 at 4:49 pm

he seems like a good guy, he just can’t pitch anymore.

  44. ansky March 31st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

god the zito deal looks worse and worse every day

  45. gayle March 31st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Listening to Girardi’s postgame but do you think the women from Taiwan would have a better question to ask as the second/third question of the press conference than to say now they have more time to celebrate Wangs birthday?

  46. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 31st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

jesus Barry Zito looks like SH** 8O

  48. Rob March 31st, 2008 at 4:51 pm

ESPN and ESPN2 is like all baseball all the time today!

Sunny and 63 degrees with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st in LA. Bet Torre isn’t missing the Bronx right about now.

  50. Countdown March 31st, 2008 at 4:52 pm

I’m in Jersey. So I really have no options for public trans to get to the stadium. The thought of taking the train into the city than the subway. UGH! Or driving to the gw to take the ferry and only getting to the game 30 minutes prior to the game starting makes me want to

I’ve always left 11;00 for a 1pm game, but now that doesn’t seem early enough.

  57. Jeff B. March 31st, 2008 at 4:57 pm

Off topic, but anyone see this?!?! Mad Dog Russo picking his nose. Amazing:

    http://thesportshernia.typepad.....early.html

  58. gayle March 31st, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Jennifer I usually leave around 10am for the 1pm games and that has been fine. SOmething I do to avoid some of the trafdfic is when you get off the GW take HarlemRiver drive and get off at 155 street exit (the first one) rather than take the Major Deegan. Once at the exit make a left at the light then just take the McComb Bridge straight across much easier and you avoid the Deegan

Add Brad Penny to that list, Carl Pavano, etc.

  62. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 31st, 2008 at 5:01 pm

interesting tidbit on Santana he once was an OF and then was converted into a pitcher, same thing happened to Wilkin De La Rosa in our farmsystem so who knows a secondary pitch and a fastball can work wonders. :D

  63. mel March 31st, 2008 at 5:02 pm

    J-Train,

  65. Alan March 31st, 2008 at 5:03 pm

AL teams with domed venues include Minnesota, Tampa Bay, Seattle, and Toronto.
Warm weather teams include the Angels, Rangers, and A’s.
The Twins host the Angels later today.
Schedules could be made up in a fair and revolving way each year similar to the opponent or division changes each year other than the normal divisional rivals.
For example, this year the Yankees host the Twins once but visit Minnesota twice.
The Yankees visit Cleveland once and play them at home for one series. After May 8th the Yankees are done with Cleveland for the year unless they meet in the playoffs.
    Ludicrous ???

  66. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 5:06 pm

Wait Milano dated all those guys?
I have to retract my prediction that she an Jeter would get together.

Jeter and Kim Jones – she seems down to earth

All mets fans at the Marlins home game lol

  76. gayle March 31st, 2008 at 5:17 pm

Mike I agree that by now they could have gotten it in but I can tell you based on how soaked my attire is it for sure was raining up until about 215, was it pouring no but it was a steady water. Like I said in my post I think they need better people reading the forecasts as since 215 it has not rained other than a light mist and Girardi even said the field was not an issue so they were seeing either a bad forecast or were not reading what they had correctly.

I think the bridge is still gone and oh by the way no more meeting at the bat as they have that bl0cked off as well.

The best thing about today as sitting in the rain was not walking up on 161st street and seeing the new stadium

  77. The J Train- Save The Drama For Yo Mama March 31st, 2008 at 5:18 pm

I guess Im the only one that doesnt enjoy watching a bunch of kids chuck up ill advised shots for 40 minutes and turning the ball over every other possession. Or watching a team win 68 to 30 or 26 to 19. College basketball is horrible.

  87. The J Train- Save The Drama For Yo Mama March 31st, 2008 at 5:27 pm

Check out the Cleveland box score.

  89. Motown Yankees Fan March 31st, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Ugh. Just got back from the stadium. It took us three hours to get in from Morris County and find a parking spot. My advice to all who drive in: leave enough time to find parking (and then leave half an hour before that). What a mess! I’m driving into the Port Authority and parking for tomorrow’s game. No driving to the Bronx on a weekday anymore.

  90. Russell NY March 31st, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Mark Hendrickson is real good. How many fastballs right down the middle is he going to throw?

  91. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 31st, 2008 at 5:36 pm

    mel: I did.

  92. Ava March 31st, 2008 at 5:37 pm

Just got back from the Stadium as well… too bad it got canceled because the weather shaped up, but there was one upside! I was in no hurry so I went to chill over at the players parking lot with all the regulars over there, and Shelley, who was leaving last, came and signed and talked a little bit. He seems like a good guy. Also, the Taiwanese fans waited forever just so they could sing happy birthday to Wang, which was cute. : ) Tomorrow’s forecast is horrible, but here’s hoping we get Opening Day on the second try.

  97. Dee March 31st, 2008 at 5:42 pm

The weather forecast looks terrible tomorrow. So what happens if tomorrow’s another no go…does it become a make-up game end of the season? If so won’t the people who paid $$$ for 9/21 tickets on Stubhub be kinda screwed since it won’t be the last game at the stadium?

  98. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 5:43 pm

    Murphydog – go for it.
Maybe we can double – I’ll take Nancy Newman

  99. murphydog March 31st, 2008 at 5:43 pm

  101. mel March 31st, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Phil and Cashman can breathe now. Santana has an ERA. There will be no (insert non-offensive synonym for lynching here) of Cashman.

  102. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 March 31st, 2008 at 5:48 pm

Ava: That sounds awesome! I’m jealous!

  103. mel March 31st, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Shouldn’t they stop that inning in Philadelphia? A 6-6 game’s become a 10-6 game in the top of the 9th and they’ve still got men on base. Just play the bottom half already.

  104. brian March 31st, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Hold on-people can’t meet at the bat anymore?????

  106. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 5:53 pm

Just checked Indians score. Victor Martinez pulled a hammie. Who gave up most of the runs for Cleveland?

    Ava -

Sounds like you had a good day in spite of the weather, thanks to Shelley and Happy Birthday CMW! :)

  107. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 5:54 pm

Murphdog- I know – all good dog.
Kim is very pretty and seems really cool – she really is good on the fan with the continent

  108. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 5:54 pm

    Kelli -

I think it’s the opposite. I think Kim melts and Jeter teases her. But it is sweet, I think. It’s the only time he cracks a smile during an interview. I don’t think there’s anything real there, though.

  109. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Kelli is that on the Fan site or yes?

  110. Derek - RETIRE 21!!! (Please?!) March 31st, 2008 at 5:59 pm

    robby wouldnt be caught dead…

Remembering last year they have a great rapport

  112. Derek - RETIRE 21!!! (Please?!) March 31st, 2008 at 6:01 pm

Also Im watching HD baseball for the first time since george bush bought me a new flat screen haha.

    And its spectacular.

The YES site for your jealous curiosity. :-)

  114. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:01 pm

    Doreen,

they are calling VMart day-to-day but it wouldnt be a surprise if he misses some time.

kinda sounds like the start of the 2007 Yankees season.

  115. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Derek Jeter article in Men’s Health:

    http://www.menshealth.com/cda/.....281eac____

  116. Nick March 31st, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Technically, the Rays have 1st place to themselves in the AL East.

  117. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:03 pm

Also, found the box score. CC struck out 7 in 5.1, but, allowed 5 runs. SOs can be overrated, no? I mean, a guy can strike out the side every time, but if he allows runs to score in between outs, not such a big deal.

  118. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Johan in a little trouble. 2 on, 1 out. Hanley on deck.

  119. raymagnetic March 31st, 2008 at 6:04 pm

    “Zito:SF as Pavano:NYY”

At least Zito pitches. Horribly but at least he pitches.

  120. mel March 31st, 2008 at 6:05 pm

    Doreen,

Sabathia gave up 5 of the runs.

  121. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:06 pm

strikeouts can def be overrated. the difference with a strikeout is that it can never be a productive out so over the course of the season they should help prevent some runs.

  122. sara March 31st, 2008 at 6:06 pm

    hey pete,
any word on what time pre-game ceremonies will start tomorrow night. i was at the stadium all day and going back tomorrow night..weather permitting! if you find anything out please let us know as soon as possible! thanks!

  123. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:07 pm

trouble in paradise already for Kerry Wood

  124. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:08 pm

white sox have had so many opps (like bases loaded nobody out) to take the lead but keep blowing it.

cleveland is gonna win this game.

  125. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 6:09 pm

    Thanks Kelli

  126. Nick in SF March 31st, 2008 at 6:10 pm

SO a Johan win + a Yankee rainout pretty much = Cashman getting fired tonight, right?

  127. Nick March 31st, 2008 at 6:10 pm

The Rays are sitting in 1st place in the AL East.

  128. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:15 pm

    Rishi =

Thanks for that link. I loved, loved, loved reading that article. It capsulized what most people who like Derek Jeter like about him. His dad sounds a lot like my father-in-law and I think my husband will get a chuckle out of that part of the article.

Women’s Health mag had a much shorter blurb from the article. Glad to have the opportunity to see the meatier work!! :)

  129. mel March 31st, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Santana just got 2 strikeouts to get out of trouble.

So like most stats, cumulative stats are less meaningful than situational ones viewed in context.

Does that sound conviluted to you guys? I don’t know how to word it.

How about this. Some strikeouts are more meaningful than others!

  130. pat March 31st, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Derek and Kim seem to taunt each other more than flirt with each other.

She’s also about 15 years older than the ladies Jeter has been reported to date.

  131. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 6:17 pm

No problem – did you have a chance to see the video? that will have to wait ’til later for me.

  132. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:18 pm

octavio dotel…. blowing games over the next 2 seasons for a mere $11M

  133. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:19 pm

gagne will only be blowing games for 1 year and $10M

  134. Brian (from PA) March 31st, 2008 at 6:20 pm

i’m still sad that the game was canceled.

what a huge bummer. something felt off about my day since the start, i guess i felt it coming. some sort of big disappointment.

oh well, at least with the rescheduled time i’ll get to see the whole game uninterrupted tomorrow. that is, if it is actually played.

WOO, 25 HOURS UNTIL OPENING DAY GUYS!

  135. Keith March 31st, 2008 at 6:21 pm

Gagne is gagging. Another deal that Cashman didn’t make. Same with Zito.

  136. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:21 pm

    Fukodome!

  137. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Rishi -

    Same here

Oh my gosh! Fukudome just hit a 3-run HR in the bottom of hte 9th to tie the game!

  138. Yankees run by morons March 31st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

Three-plus hours and counting of no rain … So much for the forecast not looking promising (according to Jim Hall at a little before 2 p.m. today). Why can’t Lonn Trost, Randy Levine, and the rest of them just admit they played all the fans simply to get people to buy more $6 hot dogs and $9.50 beers? They’re nothing but a bunch of liars who can’t be trusted. After all, what good would playing the game today do (given the three-plus hour window without rain in the late afternoon) when you can squeeze the fans for more of the same tomorrow night. Pete, it’s about time you and rest of the beat writers start calling Trost, Levine, and the rest of the non-baseball people on this. They’re getting a free ride here while screwing the fans day in and day out. How about their closing half the entrance turnstiles today at gate 4 (the one immediately to the first-base side of the team store behind home plate). Real smart idea on Opening Day! Of course, they knew no game would actually be played today (despite having Sterling get on the jumbo screen around 1 p.m. and say there was a supposed post-2 p.m. window), so why pay for the extra staff?

Am I the only one wondering why there’s no retractable roof on the new stadium? Has to be because Trost, et al. want more day like this. Between March/April days like today (before it cleared up) and 90-degree days in the summer that are part of the foul-weather climate in NY, it would seem like a no-brainer. It’s amazing the Commissioner’s office doesn’t mandate that for all new parks outside of San Diego.

  139. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:22 pm

    Reminiscent of Hideki, no?

  140. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:23 pm

  141. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:23 pm

I totally understand what you’re saying. (about situational strikeouts vs. cumulative stats)

  142. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 6:24 pm

Holy Gagne – what was that! That Fukodome – looking like a good investment so far

  143. ummfada March 31st, 2008 at 6:26 pm

Hu’s on second for the Dodgers?

  144. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:28 pm

I dont know how Gagne suckered $10M out of the Brewers. did anybody actually bid close to that? I figure he’d get some incentive-laden offers or offers in the $5-6M range.

  145. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:29 pm

look, the SF Giants are trying to score. how cute.

  146. 56Bomber March 31st, 2008 at 6:29 pm

  147. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Someone probably answered this already, but why did the Nationals play at home last night and today they are in Philly?????

  148. Jeremy March 31st, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Fukudome is an easy choice for NL ROY.

  149. ummfada March 31st, 2008 at 6:30 pm

    Welcome in Scott Proctor

  150. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    Jeremy,

    slow down there :)

i personally dont think pro players from other countries should be elgible for ROY if they come to MLB anyway.

  151. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    Is it Scott?

Torre looks pretty trim. Or Brad Penny is bigger than I thought.

  152. UPDATE .... March 31st, 2008 at 6:33 pm

    So far, no mis-pronunciation with Kosuke Fukudome. The clock is ticking . . . . . .

  153. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:34 pm

If I recall correctly, when it was Hideki Matsui of the NYY who had a great “rookie” year, there was lots of talk about he he wasn’t “really” a rookie. I do agree with that, but I think it will sure stink if Fukudome goes on to have a great year and gets serious consideration for ROY.

  154. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:35 pm

    UPDATE,

Musberger did mispronounce it… but maybe not the way you’re probably referring to :)

  155. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Well, I just checked the 2003 voting. Matsui lost by only 4 votes, but there was a lot of discussion that he should not get it. (Angel Berroa won)

  156. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    Doreen,

I think you’re right about Hideki. It defeats the purpose of rewarding a rookie. Change it to “newcomer of the year” if that’s the case. All of these guys are developed and established players, even if it’s not against MLB competition.

If you listen to Bobby Valentine, Japanese players are better than MLB anyway :)

  157. Jeremy March 31st, 2008 at 6:38 pm

I believe Matsui lost to Angel Berroa precisely because a few voters thought Matsui should not be eligible and did not vote for him. Berroa rode his ROY to a lucrative contract that the Royals soon came to regret immensely.

  158. mel March 31st, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Gagne sporting a nifty 40.50 ERA…Wait, dropped to 27.00 with that last out.

They’re going to grind Johan into the ground. He’s at 100 pitches already. I guess he’s stretched out already. Do they not have any relievers?

  159. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:41 pm

Looking at Berroa’s rookie stats, he was not undeserving, at least.

So, did Scott Proctor get the call in the Dodger game? I missed it.

  160. mel March 31st, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I just realized that the Rays are in first place. See, guys? Spring does mean something.

  161. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Not a bad debut for Santana with the Mets. I know some of you don’t want to hear that, though. :)

    Mel –

    OH NO!!!!!!

  162. Joe from Long Island March 31st, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Just got home from work…So let me see if I got this straight…
    1. Yanks “rained” out.
    2. Santana a winner.
    3. Gagne a loser.
    4. V. Martinez out with a hammy for ?
    5. Joe T. brings in Proctor – what a surprise.

    Did I miss anything else?

  163. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Looks like the Cubs are going to spoil Fukudome’s great day.

  164. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:50 pm

And Scotty P. walked a guy!

  165. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:51 pm

    Gagne gets a win?????

  166. NSK March 31st, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I just hope Reggie still throws first pitch tomorrow…and that Bob Sheppard will be back VERY SOON…

  167. Joe from Long Island March 31st, 2008 at 6:52 pm

What’s with Gagne? Are we lucky Cash didn’t bite on him last summer.

  168. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 6:52 pm

I mean, it’s great his team picked him up, but those kinds of wins shouldn’t be wins for the guy who blew a lead to begin with. I know, it’s a slippery slope…

  169. Joe from Long Island March 31st, 2008 at 6:53 pm

    The Cubs lost that one?

  170. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Eric Bedard gives up a run in the first

  171. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Bedard off to a tough start for Seattle…

  172. mel March 31st, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Bedard’s horrible spring continues. His attitude’s been really weird in Seattle. He seems to be not too prepared to be the ace of a contender.

  173. Fran March 31st, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Doreen – Didn’t Ichiro win the Rookie of the Year and he played in Japan for a number of years before coming here. Boston Dave is right – maybe there should be another award for the players coming here after playing in other countries.

As for Santana – if he could not defeat the Marlins then he’s in trouble.

  174. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:56 pm

    Doreen,

a terrific start for Santana. Of course Florida has 2-3 MLB caliber hitters so it’s not a true test, but Johan still got them out.

  175. Blargh March 31st, 2008 at 6:56 pm

The question is, what’s the official definition of ‘rookie’, according to the MLB ;)

  176. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 6:59 pm

    From Wiki
    Who qualifies as a rookie?
To qualify for the award a player must exceed neither of the following, before the season under consideration:

130 at bats or 50 innings pitched in the major leagues
45 days on the active roster of a major league club (excluding time on the disabled list or any time after rosters are expanded on September 1)

  177. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 6:59 pm

    mel,

I think Bedard was a little peeved about his contract situation, perhaps? Maybe he wants a long term deal? who knows if he is happy/unhappy with Seattle in general.

I can’t imagine he’s unhappy to get out of Baltimore.

  178. bronxbomber77 March 31st, 2008 at 7:00 pm

WOW– That Cubs game was great. Too bad I have Wood in my FL. But, watching Kosuke Fukudome play is like watching a Matsui/Ichiro clone.

I LOVE OPENING DAY (on American soil, that is…).

  179. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 7:01 pm

    Blargh/Jimmy,

if they change major leagues to “professional baseball”, it would make more sense to me. MLB isn’t going to rush to rule out Japanese players from this award because of $$$

  180. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:02 pm

3 Japanese players have won ROY = Hideo Nomo in 1995, Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2000 and of course Ichiro in 2001. So, they really had no reason to deny Matsui in 2003, except that he was a NYY imo.

Definition of a rookie, or qualifications (according to Wikipedia):

130 at bats or 50 innings pitched in the major leagues
45 days on the active roster of a major league club (excluding time on the disabled list or any time after rosters are expanded on September 1)

  181. UPDATE .... March 31st, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Mel Stottlemyre as pitching coach of the Mariners looks odd.

    FSN Northwest.

  182. mel March 31st, 2008 at 7:07 pm

    http://sports-ak.espn.go.com/mlb/index

Please take the poll at the bottom. The results are skewed right now. Go unskew them please.

  183. Blargh March 31st, 2008 at 7:09 pm

The tricky part about changing the wording from ‘Major Leagues’ to ‘professional baseball’ is an implied equality in one way or another ;)

Well, I’m glad that I have Fukudome on my fantasy team… :)

  184. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    Mel

That was weird. I mean I understand NY, NJ & CT, but New Mexico & Utah??!!!! What’s up with that?

Everyone else — go vote in he poll! We have to represent!

  185. Jeremy March 31st, 2008 at 7:11 pm

I agree that it’s somewhat silly for an accomplished player from another league to win the ROY. I think that a rookie’s experience in another league should weigh against him, but should not disqualify him.

That said, I repeat that Fukudome is a lock for NL ROY because the strength of his season will more than make up for his experience in Japan.

  186. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Huh! Blargh, I had just posted the same thing you said, but it didn’t show up. Also, I think if you start messing with that definition it will creep into the way Japanese players are courted and signed.

  187. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 7:12 pm

    Blargh,

there doesnt need to be an implied equality.

it just means that someone who has played professionally before is no longer a rookie. Ichiro dominated in Japan for years. then he comes here at age 28 and gets ROY? he wasnt even close to being a rookie.

  188. Fran March 31st, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I did my part and voted.

  189. Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness.. March 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    Gosh Zito sucks.

  190. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:15 pm

    Boston Dave -

Are the minor leagues considered professional baseball?

  191. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Fran, did you check out the country-wide results???

  192. Cool Eddy March 31st, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Anyone know if opening day will still show on ESPN?

  193. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 7:19 pm

i voted – I always think it’s funny to see the states and then the “world” where you know that’s mostly all of Canada just lumped together!

  194. Blargh March 31st, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Or the independent leagues…or Latin American ball…any league where you get paid to play baseball, really would technically be professional baseball ;)

The implied equality would be saying that spending time elsewhere is somehow still meaningful with respect to MLB

And that gets rolling into the various clauses for salary related to service time ;)

  195. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 7:20 pm

who cares what the country thinks?

it will just make victory even sweeter…

  196. Jimmy 27 March 31st, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Mel – I did my civic Duty

We really need to vote early and often for All Stars this year- all bets are off – stuff the ballots

  197. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:21 pm

    Blargh, you are right, there.

I think we’ll just have to realize that everytime that a really good Japanese player comes over and does well, there’s going to be this debate.

  198. Fran March 31st, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Doreen – That was surprising. I would not have picked New Mexico and Utah as Yankee country. I am surprised that Florida did not go for the Yanks since there are so many transplanted New Yorkers there.

  199. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Did anyone hear that? The Mets have the best opening day record ever.

  200. Boston Dave March 31st, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    Blargh,

I agree… but I do think that playing pro ball elsewhere is meaningful with respect to MLB. How meaningful? Nobody knows. Ask Ichiro. I’m sure he was better when he got to the US than he was as a rookie in Japan. Same with all the others. I don’t think there is much question that given time to be coached, develop, and gain experience in a pro league has to count for something.

  201. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:25 pm

    Boston Dave -

I don’t so much care what the country thinks – it’s no surprise that they wouldn’t be pro-Yankees. What amused me was that New Mexico and Utah voted Yankees.

  202. mel March 31st, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I wasn’t paying attention years ago, but if other Japanese players won it, then maybe Hideki suffered Yankee backlash. In that case there would be no debate. Because you can’t win a debate with a moving goal post involved.

  203. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:26 pm

    Fran,

Yeah! I didn’t notice about Florida.

  204. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:28 pm

    Mel -

There didn’t seem to be ANY negative discussion when it was Ichiro. I do not recall the others.

  205. Blargh March 31st, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I just wanted to point out that wording can be very tricky, especially with the CBA referring to major league service time a few times in it. Pretty hard to change one instance of ‘major league’ being used and not have side effects rippling through everything else.

IMO, less hassle to keep with the current definition of rookie. Which side of the debate I agree with…well, no disclosure on that ;)

  206. mel March 31st, 2008 at 7:31 pm

I want clarify my earlier comment about Bedard. He did have an awful spring and his attitude was blase. The beat writers were really baffled that he was not concerned at all that he was not as advertised.

If he has a good outing today, then there’s no story there. Just another example of Spring don’t mean *bleep*.

  207. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 7:32 pm

From Rob Neyer’s monster marathon chat:

Nick (Franklin Square, NY): I got into an argument with a friend over which offense was superior: Yankees or Tigers. I think the Tigers are really good, but the Yankees are a shade better. Am I wrong?

Rob Neyer: (7:25 PM ET ) I don’t think you’re wrong. As much as I hate to say it, it looks to me like the Yankees are the best in the AL, Mets the best in the NL.

  208. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Ichiro beat out CC Sabathia, who was 17-5 with a 4.39 ERA and 171 strikeouts. The next offensive player in line in 2001 was Alfonso Soriano, but he was nowhere near Ichiro in his stats. Ichiro also won AL MVP that season.

Now, maybe there was no debate because there was no offensive competition, but I think that’s a great year for a rookie pitcher (Sabathia) – I mean, wouldn’t you be disappointed if Phil or Ian puts together a year like that and does not get ROY. And considering he never pitched in “professional” ball, I would think that writers should have given Sabathia more consideration.

So, I think with Hideki there was Yankee backlash. Like with every other award, unless a Yankee is so much better that there’s no question (like ARod last season), they will not win these type of awards (like Jeter in 2006, who got robbed of the MVP, imo).

  209. Michael L March 31st, 2008 at 7:37 pm

anyone saw the Dodgers game? Torre’s first bullpen move as manager is of course bringing in Proctor. hehe…All I gotta say is….good luck scott.

  210. Rishi March 31st, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I’ll try this again – from the Rob Neyer marathon chat:

    9am showers
    10a-12 noon few showers
    12-6 showers/wind
    7-9pm mostly cloudy wind
    10p few showers

I know that the grounds crew usually seems to know what they are doing but I dont understand today as when i was at the game and looked at weather.com it showed that the weather would be exactly what it has been for the past few hours just cloudy.

Remember this is the same grounds crew that during the playoffs against Detroit 2 years ago saw the weather being horrible that night and cancelled when there was not a drop of rain coming down but they saw a forecast for it. Yes it rained during the pre game stuff but it stopped right after it.

Some of you may remember the discussion the other day about numbers being retired from all of MLB. Currently it’s only Robinson’s No. 42, but Roberto Clemente’s family and friends also want No. 21 retired.

Now comes the news that Babe Ruth’s granddaughter is petitioning MLB to retire the Babe’s No. 3 off the eligible number list too.

    http://wcbstv.com/sports/babe......89070.html

    Her argument?

“I do agree with Jackie being retired. He did a great thing,” [Linda] Ruth Tosetti said. “But I think there are other players that have done just as much or more. And actually if it weren’t for my grandfather, there wouldn’t be a game for Jackie to retire from or play.”

So, to recap… Robinson’s daughter thinks Clemente isn’t as deserving as her father because what Jackie did opened the door for Roberto, and Ruth’s granddaughter says that without the Babe there never would have been a Jackie.

    Very powerful logic. Not.

  254. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 31st, 2008 at 9:23 pm

is she serious ? I love the Babe and everything but don’t make that type of arguement Linda, if Babe wasn’t borned Ted Williams would have been the game’s carrier, Mickey Mantle, Josh Gibson was pretty good…to say that Babe paved the way for Jackie Robinson just wow stop already …

  255. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") March 31st, 2008 at 9:27 pm

that had to be the most disturbing thing I read is there a petition to not retire this number ? I’m signing that one before we know it the MLB players will play w/ symbols, it gets worse because during the CBS broadcast she said the new Yankee Stadium will also be the house that Ruth built too, last I checked in a horrible era Steinbrenner purchased this team and put so much into it even through the crazy years.

Weather is, by nature, kind of unpredictable. The worst case scenario is starting a game and not being able to finish it. The field would have taken time to clear up, and THEN they needed a good 3 hours to complete the game. It looks like 7-10 tomorrow has good odds of being those 3 clear hours. I’m going to go ahead and trust the weather radar they have over whatever we can see on weather.com.

Well my brother flipped on me first, than my father. I was a little kid, I didn’t know any better. So my brother proceeded to take all my baseball cards from me.

My younger daughter used to love beanies. She has over 200 of them BUT each one of them loved to death. They currently reside in two wicker laundry baskets. I can’t bring myself to get rid of them. They were never a true “collectible” in this house, but they were collected. And they are PRICELESS for the enjoyment they gave my daughter.

  268. Doreen March 31st, 2008 at 10:06 pm

It’s really too bad baseball cards are no longer for fun. Or what I would call fun. It’s how I made friends with boys when I was in elementary school. I loved playing baseball cards, and since I was a girl and had no cards of my own, the boys would play and get to keep their cards. Of course, eventually I got my own cards and played for “keepsies,” too. But it was how I learned who was who in baseball. And that awful gum! My brother had a great collection, but like many boys of his age, my mom, who hates clutter, cleaned house and out went the cards. Needless to say he is a big collector of cards now.

I was there yesterday, and will be there tonight, so mine won’t be empty. I guarantee we’ll be missing a few thousand.. people come from all over to go to Opening Day. It really is a shame.

Did anyone watch Jose on Letterman last night?

He says yeah Alex did roids I introduced him to a roid dealer, i’m out of it after that. But everyone always used. Or some bs like that.

Now on Roger he says Yeah we joked about it, I gave him information on it, but I don’t believe he did anything with it.

Can someone explain to me what is the difference between Alex and Roger?

Letterman was pretty good in pressing him. When talking about Alex liking his wife he says he believes something happened, than says he knows. Letterman pressed him and said well do you believe or do you know. Than Jose says he knows. for sure.

Letterman also asked him if he uses roids now. He says I’m the same weight I was when I was playing. David says, that doesn’t answer the question. Jose says yeah its all legal. But gives a ‘look’.

All in all Jose came off looking HORRIBLE!!

  318. DMan April 1st, 2008 at 8:46 am

Hopefully having it at night will help.. If people didn’t exchange their tickets, won’t they open up the box office at some point?

I’m not sure how that works..

  319. Vader April 1st, 2008 at 8:47 am

Did anyone hear Jose on the Fan this morning? He hung up on them in 4 or so minutes, becuase according to him they were disrespecting him…very funny.

  320. Doreen April 1st, 2008 at 8:55 am

There was a piece in the Star Ledger this morning talking about the rainout, of course. It focused on a father-son “team” who had made the trip up from Georgia. They can’t make tonight’s game, but not because they’re leaving NY. It’s because they have tickets for tonight to see “The Little Mermaid,” something the promised mom & sis they’d do on their visit to NYC.

But anyway, it did get me to thinking of the people who did come from out of town, way out of town, for the day. It’s really a shame they couldn’t get the game in. Let’s hope many more people are able to go tonight than not, though. I guess there’s no way to re-sell the empty seats at the stadium if the tickets weren’t exchanged yesterday?

Jose Canseco is a self-serving annoyance who sometimes gets lucky with the truth.

  321. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge April 1st, 2008 at 8:58 am

Jose is worried that holes are being punched in his story. Yeah nobody has sued. But is a long and difficult and time consuming process. It comes to a point, where is worth the time?

    Rebecca,

Good joke, but Mark Kotsay was traded to the Braves.

  323. george April 1st, 2008 at 9:03 am

Jennifer, i don’t see much difference between Alex & Roger in this respect. they both were accused by very unreliable sources. they both merit some INTERNAL investigation by MLB at best.

i guess one difference is that Mitchell irresponsibly gave the Clemens accusations traction by publishing them sans a full investigation, and that empowered the intellectually lazy people who predominate in the media to pass all sorts of arrogant judgments based on nothing concrete. (instead of some real investigative journalism)

if Canseco had accused A-Rod to Mitchell, Mitchell would have included the accusation, & the exact same thing would have occurred.

  324. Fran April 1st, 2008 at 9:04 am

    Jennifer,

I saw Letterman last night. Canseco said that the dealer “Max” wanted to meet Alex and he introduced them. After that he had nothing to do with them. So in Jose’s mind that meant Alex did steroids. There’s a lot of proof!!

And as for the wife thing after Dave pressed him he said I know – ask my ex-wife. She wrote a book about her love life and never mentioned Alex in it. You would think she would have unless she’s saving it for her second book!

And Clemens who he implicated in his last book is now all of a sudden clean. Sounds like a payoff to me.

I still think that Canseco is just angry at Alex for the fact that Alex did not use Jose’s brother as his agent as John Heyman wrote.

  325. Kevin CT April 1st, 2008 at 9:22 am

    George -

Last I checked Clemens was accused of being directly INJECTED by a third party.

Let me know how that compares to ARod?

  326. murphydog April 1st, 2008 at 9:30 am

Canseco is the fart in a crowded elevator. Nothing you can do about it, except get off at next floor, wait for another elevator and get on with your day.

    Good Morning All

Perhaps this has been covered in the 325 previous posts, but I just joined you…

Does anyone know if ESPN or inDemand will cover tonight’s game? Seems like inDemand should carry it as a “make-up”, but it’s not showing on their website. Would appreciate any info from this always well-informed community.

    Thanks

    Off the topic of baseball…

How about this for a sports scandle?

“they both were accused by very unreliable sources. they both merit some INTERNAL investigation by MLB at best.”

    If even that.

I mean…I really don’t think that Canseco’s word should be enough to even start the digging. MAYBE if he can produce this Max guy AND that guy can provide evidence of a meeting with a player AND someone corroborates that Max has dealt steroids.

  331. jennifer- Hip Hip Jorge April 1st, 2008 at 9:44 am

I believe either espn or espn2 will carry the game.
