It’s the final Opening Day at the Stadium and the Yankees have undergone some changes since we saw them last.
Brian Heyman was at yesterday’s workout. His notebook has news on Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter and Chien-Ming Wang.
Speaking of the Wanger, Happy Birthday. He’s 28.
Headed to the Stadium now. Check back later for updates.

Good morning all. I was listening to a random playlist on my ipod last night and “The Boys Are Back In Town” came on–what a pleasant surprise. Can’t wait to hear it at the Stadium today.
Go Yankees!
finally, it seems like st took forever.
To all of you in New York:
Will the weather be a threat to today’s game? I need to finalize my plans for work this afternoon…if you know what I mean.
rain, rain, go away…
I know exactly what you are saying John. Looks like I might be sticking around the office today (sigh).
Have a nice day at the Stadium: we will have to enjoy it via the blog!
Thanks for the “feel good” article, Pete. Lots of excitement in the air. Lots of expectations. All that’s for sure is that it is going to be another roller-coaster affair!
Have fun today, everyone, and stay as dry as you can. I’ll cross my fingers that the rain holds off ’til after the game.
Very interesting video at The New York Times about little known things inside Yankee Stadium

less than 5 hours - I’m tingling.
To everyone who is going have FUN!!!
Also to those driving in, please fill me in on the parking situation. I think I am going Sunday and have to drive in since I’m from Jersey.
Thanks!!!
I can hardly wait..
I hope I can find an online radio station to listen to the game here at work..
Otherwise you all might have to be my play-by-play and commentary team.
dman you can’t get 880 on your radio? I have my radio tilted so I can get it.
It’s the most won-der-ful time,
yes the most won-der-ful tiiiiime,
the mooost won-der-ful tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime…
Of the yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaar!!
UGH!! 1pm can’t come quick enough!!!
I’m so pumped; I won’t be there, but I can’t wait, nonetheless. I updated my blog with a 2008 preview and a VERY optimistic prediction that I maintain can be done. I wrote it at 2am, however, and I have no idea how coherent it is.
Did anyone see Harper’s column this morning?
jennifer-
I can get it up here sometimes, but I’ve never been able to get it indoors! I think I’m just to far away. And I signed up for MLB tv/radio, but they’ve blocked it here at work..
Curse them. Making me work instead of listening to baseball.
Y.A.N.K.E.E.S.

Don’t they know what is more important!!
I am about 20 yards from a window, and get it with some static. I don’t care if it bothers anyone!
Okay, Whozat — I couldn’t resist this:
There’ll be hot dogs a-roasting
Some brewskies for “toasting”
And revelling up in the stands
There’ll be Yankees “ghost” stories
And tales fo the Glories
of the most Series wins in the land!
It’s the most wonderful time, of the year!!!!!
jennifer-
Sounds like you just nominated yourself to keep me informed throughout the game! Hah. =D
Maybe 880 will be live-streaming it online.. Hmm. That’d be nice.
Today is better than Christmas.
(I’ll also be treating it a little like St. Patrick’s Day — if you’re not wearing the interlocking NY, I will pinch you.)
Jennifer I amleaving for the stadium in about 20 minutes however being as you live near me I have found they key to the parking is getting there before gates open about an hour before and you have no problem parking in the main lot. All the times I have gone that is what I do if by chance you gt caught in traffic which happens to me sometimes on saturdays the worst case scenario I havehad is to park in the valet lots on river street the can be pricey but again I have never had a problem.
The thing about living in Jersey there really is no public transportation to get there unless you take the ferry which doesnt leave until later (and i like to be there when gates open) or go into the city which means various transfers of trains, or buses etc
Hey, I heard there’s a game today. Can anyone confirm this?
(/sarcasm)
CAN’T WAIT!
dman sorry I can’t
I have to work. I’ll be on lunch for some of the game.
good morning to everyone! i’m so excited as well. i won’t let a few sprinkles ruin my mood…
happy opening day to all… i’m sure i wont be the only one huddled around my computer screen for my lunchbreak following pitch-by-pitch on GameDay. damn work!
“Maybe 880 will be live-streaming it online.. Hmm. That’d be nice.”
They never do…I’m surprised that gameday audio won’t have it, though.
jennifer-
Nope, cancel your lunch. =]
kidding kidding, I think I’ll find it streaming somewhere out there.
Let’s get this party started!
I have followed baseball this off-season more than any other thanks to this and a couple of other Yankee blogs.
I currently live in VA, but grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY. My grandparents were from the Bronx and lived on Long Island. I remember stories of how my grandfather shook the Babe’s hand and how they would hang out at the stadium and the cops would let them sneak into the game for free.
My grandfather was asked to tryout for the Yankees but got hurt playing a pick-up game before tryouts. He was a lefty pitcher. Bother grandparents were big-time Yankee fans and passed the gene on to me.
I now have two young Yankee fans that are looking forward to seeing games with me this season, thanks to the MLB Extra Innings package on Comcast.
Did anyone else listen to the Yankees as a kid on a transistor radio beneath the covers at night, with a flashlight on to score the game. What memories!
So how many out of town Yankee fans are there on this blog? Anyone else with some memories from their Yankee childhood?

Anybody seen at the Stadium today wearing anything Boston is demonstrating clear undeniable envy.
Then again, that could be any day.
Pete-
I am just catching up from the weekend… Manny Ramirez for MVP? Say it ain’t so! After his down year last year, why do you think he is primed for such a great season?
It’ll start live at 4 am where I live, and I actually just sat my alarm clock for 3:45 so I won’t miss the start. My husband thinks I’m nuts!! lol
I heard on TV this morning that Bobby sent around a video to friends, I guess people were getting very concerned that he wasn’t going to be at the stadium today.

What is your favorite thing about going to a Mets game at Shea Stadium?
The Home Run apple in centerfield

Kevin: You and your family aren’t by any chance IBMers? I have memories of growing up there with channel 11 and putting up with the static on WMCA. My father turned down chances to move to Manassas, VA and San Jose, Ca. He didn’t consult me!
Here’s hoping the Yankees win the world series (the 27th championship is always the hardest) but more important let’s hope they play the game with honor, integrity, class, respect and 100% maximum effort.

Jim, I worked as an intern at IBM while I was in college. I was in the Pougkeepsie plant on South Rd (Rte 9). I know a few people whose parents worked there too.
I spent all of my youth years and college years (Vassar) in Poughkeepsie. I moved away in 1987 but usually get back once a year or so.
Are you from that area?

Happy Birthday to Wang! Hopefully for his birthday him and the Yankees will see a win!
Doreen that was awesome!!! I love Christmas time about as much as I love the Yanks. (…these are a few of my favorite things…)
I am home from work, sick as a dog. I definitely would not have done well today if we ended up going. I always take the afternoon off on Opening Day to go home and watch the game. My office is well aware of that. Being in RI I am the only Yankee fan in my office, one of the very few where I work. Well today I didn’t even bother going in, that’s how sick I feel.
My personality is such that I do not worry about basically anything, ever. I am the original eternal optimist. I laughed when people were talking about the fact that the Yanks weren’t the universal pick of the “experts”. Who gives a rat’s patootie? The “experts” have picked the Yanks just about every year and where did it get them? I’ll tell you our secret weapon who got it on the nose, and that’s Buster Olney. The guy has always had a real pulse on the Yanks, for good or bad. We used to interact with him a lot when he worked for the NY Times as the Yanks sportswriter and we posted on the Yankees Forum there. In those days he’d actually come on and do question and answer sessions with us maybe once a month or so. Real nice guy. Well when he wrote his book The Last Night of the Yankee Dynasty, I wrote him off. I knew he was wrong and I felt like he was being a traitor. There was no way the Yankee Dynasty had ended and I knew Buster got it all wrong.
Buster had it right, I had it wrong, and when Buster says the Yanks are taking the East, it goes from his lips right to God’s ears.
So anyway, I know we’ve got the east wrapped. (Actually I knew that even before I saw the experts’ picks.) You’ll never see me break a sweat no matter what’s happening with the Yanks because I always know that in the end they will get the job done. What other team could be 9.5 games out of first and still take the damned division???!
JOE GIRARDI - THE STRAW THAT STIRS THE DRINK!
In case anyone is tempted to suggest that I am “worried” about Wang, that is totally incorrect. I am not thrilled with him but one pitcher does not a team make. When it comes to the Yankees, I wouldn’t know how to worry. The worry gene was not passed on to me!
Today’s weather looks to make it a five-hour nine-inning jobbie with about 7 pitchers used.
The only thing that’ll harder than waiting until game time will be waiting out the various rain delays.
Honestly, Opening Day should be a national holiday. I’d love to see an analysis on worker productivity in baseball cities.
Stan’s will sell some shirts today ….. lotsa shirts.
Jennifer,
Thanks for reminding me about the Yankees fight song. You are probably too young to know this but WPIX used to play that at the beginning of every game. Very cool.
Thanks Dave.
Since it looks like the weather will hold up (also checked weather.com) I am going to get out of this office and head home for the game. Go Yanks!
