First peek into an inner sanctum

Today was my first look at the manager’s office at Yankee Stadium since Joe Girardi took over.
It’s the same office Joe Torre left. Same desk, same bookshelf, same refrigerator.
But that was it. Torre had 12 seasons worth of souvenirs crammed onto the bookshelf, all sorts of books, photos, bobblehead dolls and other keepsakes. The photos on the wall were mostly signed shots of celebrities. Frank Sinatra, Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mantle and the like. It was a mini museum.
Girardi’s office is spartan by comparison. A few family photos, Jets and Giants helmets, framed photos of some old Yankees and giant containers of whey protein that he apparently mixes into a drink of some sort. The old skipper had his green tea and vitamins; the new one has whey protein.
According to Wikipedia, whey protein is used by body builders. I’m starting to wonder if Girardi wanted to manage the Yankees so he could save money on gym fees.
But what caught my eye immediately was a copy of the Baseball Prospectus 2008 annual on the shelf behind the desk. Baseball Prospectus in the manager’s office?
Yep, Joe Torre doesn’t live here any more.

Peter Abraham

Can’t wait for Hughes tomorrow…
Wow. I check the blog right before I go to sleep to see if Pete’s posted anything new, what do I get? An inside look of the Yankees manager’s office. Pete, you are simply “Da Best In Da Business”! What would we do without you? Thanks again. G’Night All!
BP??? that’s awesome…i’m so happy right now
oh and FYI, whey protein is used by anyone who wants to put on lean muscle(not exactly bulk up)…I know from experience
Damn, I need to buy some of that stuff.
“But what caught my eye immediately was a copy of the Baseball Prospectus 2008 annual on the shelf behind the desk. Baseball Prospectus in the manager’s office?”
Girardi means business
BP on Girardi’s shelf is good news.
You’ve done a great job covering these first couple games, Pete, I hope you keep up this level of coverage throughout the season, it’s a great resource for Yankee fans.
You’ve never heard of whey protein? It’s pretty common stuff among athletes or people who work out. It’s just a supplement, something you’re supposed to take after workouts. Pay no attention to the stigma implied by the Wikipedia article, it’s probably as common as multi-vitamin pills.
i can tell you like giambi. you mention him alot. i do too. it’s refreshing that girardi seems to value his services more than torre. rough game tonight for big g, but i expect a big game tomorrow. btw, amazing job on this blog - you do a great service to us diehards.
Who hasn’t heard of Whey protein? If you’re not using it, you’re probably not getting the amount of protein your body needs.
“Moose” is finished.
Dear M&M Apologists,
I hate to use the word “homer” but you’re all deeply misguided if you actually believe Mike Mussina is going to improve on his 07 season-which need I remind you was his worst on record.
How I ask, do those of who actually believe that this was some sort of “good sign”/”nice effort” “cold but his velocity will show up when it’s not frozen tundra winter baseball” blah blah blah
How do you reconcile the fact that the man is one year older and threw not ONE TIME over 88 MILES PER HOUR IN ALL OF HIS 08 FLORIDA SPRING TRAINING STARTS??
“Moose” is finished.
News for all of you…
HE WILL NEVER TOUCH 90 OR EVEN THE HIGH 80S AGAIN
No it’s not AS important to some pitchers…Maddux comes to mind, BUT!!!
And before you go all “Greg Maddux” on me…ie “Doesn’t matter what the gun sais if you can pitch to the corners and change speeds blah blah”
And as you all know…
1. MIKE MUSSINA PITCHES IN A FAR SUPERIOR DIVISION AND LEAGUE.
2. MADDUX CAN GET AWAY WITH HIS LOSS OF VELOCITY IN THAT HE NEVER RELIED ON IT ANYWAY.
Oh forget it…
Some of you are beyond reason and want to cherry pick till your fingers are as red as the deficeit between last nights game score so i’ll not waste anymore time…
I’m with you guys!!!
Moose was great tonight!!!
Oh I hope I hope we can get some warmer weather…
FINGERS CROSSED.
So he pitches 88 but will never hit high 80’s. Wow this confuses me. I still think mussina can win at least 10 games this year. Give him a break.
watching the game last night, i had to empathize with moose. i wont say the ump was terrible, but he sure wasn’t consistent. his zone kinda was and wasn’t. moose would get the call low outside, follow with almost identical location and wouldn’t get the call. that pattern followed all night regardless of where the pitch was. as a pitcher what do you do. you get behind and that isn’t ever a good deal. moose made a great deal of away pitches, i felt should have gone his way, only because a great many did. baseball?
The Baaseball Prospectus guys have said the only manager they knew who had read any of their books or adopted any of their methods was Manny Acta.
Statistics certainly aren’t everything in baseball. But they provide a different angle on the game.
I believe Girardi studied Operations Engineering in college (graduated in 4 years as an Engineer from North Western). Operations engineering can use a lot of statistics.
Rocca, thanks. your first sentence prevented me from reading the ‘Pedroia = Bald Midget’ post…
and rover, i think we see a sinister side of umpiring when moose is on the mound.
I am not a fan of Moose. I think Cashman made a mistake by signing him for two years — a foolish, seemingly sentiment-driven decision. Sorry, but the best GMs are cold-blooded, like George Weiss was.
That said, if Moose stays healthy, and can pitch throughout the season as well as he pitched last night, he will have a much better year than last year.
Nice post, Pete. Love the way you bring us the little details nobody else does.
kunaldo is correct. It is not just for body builders. Pete it looks like you need to hit the gym. Glutamene (spelling?) is good to to mix into your protein shakes.
Did it look like the Baseball Prospectus 2008 annual had been opened?
I’ve used Whey as a dietary supplement for a while. Believe me I am no body builder, I run and also lift a couple of days a week. My off days and pick up days are a lot easier since I started.
But I thought SJ44 said people in baseball don’t use Baseball Prospectus.
“But I thought SJ44 said people in baseball don’t use Baseball Prospectus.”
they really don’t, but Acta in the NL and Girardi in the AL do, you have to be a smarta*s to apply it but now we can see how the game of coaching may change.
“I am not a fan of Moose. I think Cashman made a mistake by signing him for two years — a foolish, seemingly sentiment-driven decision. ”
yes, it had nothing to do with the fact that Moose had the 4th best ERA in the AL in 2006. that he pitched 197.3 innings with a 3.51 ERA, 172 K’s and only 35 walks.
he had a 1.11 WHIP, which was THIRD in the AL. his hits allowed per 9 IP was 4th in the AL.
by any objective measure, moose was one of the 5-10 best pitchers in the AL in 2006.
if you have a complaint with what Cashman did, it would be that he should have picked up Moose’s 2007 option for $17M instead of giving him the 2 years, $23M. maybe you’d have an argument there.
but saying that Cashman should have just let him go for nothing after 2006 is nothing more than hindsight GM’ing.
although that’s what 99% of the blog is, so no surprise there.
who needs facts?
They couldn’t get Girardi a new desk or bookshelf? Guess they had to save money for A-Rod’s contract somewhere. Unless it was the same desk used by managers throughout the years. I like to think that Torre left Joe a note in the top drawer or under the blotter like the outgoing president does for the incoming president.
