They couldn't get Girardi a new desk or bookshelf? Guess they had to save money for A-Rod's contract somewhere. Unless it was the same desk used by managers throughout the years. I like to think that Torre left Joe a note in the top drawer or under the blotter like the outgoing president does for the incoming president.

"I am not a fan of Moose. I think Cashman made a mistake by signing him for two years — a foolish, seemingly sentiment-driven decision. "

yes, it had nothing to do with the fact that Moose had the 4th best ERA in the AL in 2006. that he pitched 197.3 innings with a 3.51 ERA, 172 K's and only 35 walks.

he had a 1.11 WHIP, which was THIRD in the AL. his hits allowed per 9 IP was 4th in the AL.

by any objective measure, moose was one of the 5-10 best pitchers in the AL in 2006.

if you have a complaint with what Cashman did, it would be that he should have picked up Moose's 2007 option for $17M instead of giving him the 2 years, $23M. maybe you'd have an argument there.

but saying that Cashman should have just let him go for nothing after 2006 is nothing more than hindsight GM'ing.

although that's what 99% of the blog is, so no surprise there.

who needs facts?

"But I thought SJ44 said people in baseball don’t use Baseball Prospectus."

they really don't, but Acta in the NL and Girardi in the AL do, you have to be a smarta*s to apply it but now we can see how the game of coaching may change.

Did it look like the Baseball Prospectus 2008 annual had been opened?

I've used Whey as a dietary supplement for a while. Believe me I am no body builder, I run and also lift a couple of days a week. My off days and pick up days are a lot easier since I started.

kunaldo is correct. It is not just for body builders. Pete it looks like you need to hit the gym. Glutamene (spelling?) is good to to mix into your protein shakes.

I am not a fan of Moose. I think Cashman made a mistake by signing him for two years -- a foolish, seemingly sentiment-driven decision. Sorry, but the best GMs are cold-blooded, like George Weiss was.

That said, if Moose stays healthy, and can pitch throughout the season as well as he pitched last night, he will have a much better year than last year.

Nice post, Pete. Love the way you bring us the little details nobody else does.

Rocca, thanks. your first sentence prevented me from reading the 'Pedroia = Bald Midget' post...

and rover, i think we see a sinister side of umpiring when moose is on the mound.

The Baaseball Prospectus guys have said the only manager they knew who had read any of their books or adopted any of their methods was Manny Acta.

Statistics certainly aren't everything in baseball. But they provide a different angle on the game.

I believe Girardi studied Operations Engineering in college (graduated in 4 years as an Engineer from North Western). Operations engineering can use a lot of statistics.

watching the game last night, i had to empathize with moose. i wont say the ump was terrible, but he sure wasn't consistent. his zone kinda was and wasn't. moose would get the call low outside, follow with almost identical location and wouldn't get the call. that pattern followed all night regardless of where the pitch was. as a pitcher what do you do. you get behind and that isn't ever a good deal. moose made a great deal of away pitches, i felt should have gone his way, only because a great many did. baseball?
