Melancon is fine, by the way

So it seems Mark Melancon warmed up for Tampa last night but when they went to call him into the game, something happened and he didn’t pitch.
Worry not, baseball fans. He’s not injured.
Brian Cashman reports that Tampa manager Luis Sojo forgot to put Melancon’s name on the lineup card, so he couldn’t come into the game.
“The player is fine,” Cashman wrote in an e-mail.
Meanwhile, how have we gotten to the point where fans in New York are following Class A relievers? Could New York fans actually embrace the idea of developing players? It boggles the mind.

Many of us follow the Yanks minor league boxscores as we watch the Yankees. Cashman knows Yankee fans love homegrown talent which is another reason he’s comfortable not trading Hughes for Santana.
thanks for the new post. i think i’ve had plenty of the topic of the previous one.
Fire Sojo!
Wait. Luis Sojo?! Since when?
From the last thread:
Ashil, they’ve been two weeknight games in April, when school is still in session, and it hasn’t exactly been warm.
that’s good to hear. lmao at Sojo. He was a good player off the bench and in the clubhouse, but he seems kind of clueless as a coach of any kind sometimes. remember him as our third base coach a few years ago? Send em’ home sojo! god i think he set a record for sending guys home only to be thrown out by 5 feet.
side note: does anyone know why people in wisconsin are so into wearing ridiculous things on their heads? there’s the cheese heads for the Packers, now i was just on MLB.com and there as a pic of fans at Miller Park for opening day, all wearing these gigantic retro Brewers logo hats on their head, and one guy with what appears to be a foam beer keg on his head.
It thanks to blogs like yours and Chad Jennings that makes following the Yankee farm system much easier, and more enjoyable, than ever before.
Pete, it’s a clear example of you and Chad creating demand by providing a service. For years, it was incredibly difficult to get minor league information out of clubs. Now, with the internet and publications like Baseball America, it’s a lot easier.
Cash must be happy to hear we are all obsessing over how Melancon is doing.
“Could New York fans actually embrace the idea of developing players?”
They already have…
Brian - because it is freakin’ cold in Wisconsin. It really is just an outgrowth of a hat. The bigger the hat, the warmer, and over the years it just developed.
(ok, I’m making it up, but sounds reasonable, no?)
Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (aka Joe)
you still have those tickets?
Pete, some of us have followed them pretty closely for a long time even when there weren’t that many to follow.
most yankees fans don’t know who melancon is.
Good to know. If I may recall, at last 6 devoted yankee fans on this site were on suicide watch last night because of this Melanco confusion.
I can’t wait to see him up. He’s my favorite minor leaguer. He’s got some good stuff.
Doesn’t reflect too well on Luis.
I’m not in NY. Judging from weather.com it doesn’t look good for tonight. What do you guys who are there think?
“I can’t wait to see him up. He’s my favorite minor leaguer.”
The guy’s had six innings of professional ball…let’s let him put together a few good months in the minors before we start hotly anticipating his MLB debut.
It is not raining currently in midtown, but rain is expected through the night.
only diehards no that name
I think the real fans of the Yanks do know that the way to build a team for the long run is with home grown players not the quick fix that both the media and ownership always wants. I would think that Peter Abraham would notice that when a player is brought through the system they become a fan favorites. Jeter, Petite, Hughes, Posada, Bernie, Cano, Duncan, Melky, Joba, Kennedy and the list goes on and on. .
Pete: many of us nyy fans, follow our minor league system, as closely as we do the parent club. And we do laugh when the ny media/writers, manage to mess up even the most basic information regarding a major prospect. Such as last season, when mike and the mad dog, referred to Ian Kennedy, as a left handed pitcher, in the yankees system. You know, the same ones on the radio, who you said were intelligent.
i think a lot of people realize melancon is more than a “Class A” reliever, even if that is the level he is currently pitching in. this guy is going to be GOOD. glad to hear he’s okay.
Bob,
It is not raining in midtown and really hasnt rained much all day like it was suppose to. If I had to guess I would say the Yanks sneak this game in tonight.
I cant believe it but the White Sox are beating Detroit 8-5 in the 8th inning.
whozat are you watching Jonathan Sanchez vs Milwaukee the kid is dealing
I don’t know, Hugh. Accuweather has the chance of rain jumping to 77% after 6pm. http://www.accuweather.com/us/ny/bronx/10451/city-weather-forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&u=1&traveler=1
Melky suspension reduced to 2 games and he begins serving it today per Kat O’Briens blog on Newsday.
Real fans know the draft picks, have written about them and discuss them years before they even AA. I was following Joba’s performances when he was in the Hawaiian Winter League.
“Melky suspension reduced to 2 games and he begins serving it today per Kat O’Briens blog on Newsday.”
I thought the hearing was Monday?
Speaking of the minors, how about that prospect starter that went for Scranton yesterday. 6 perfect innings, 7K’s! Name’s Igawa or something - keep an eye on this kid!
Here’s the link to Kat’s blog entry. It has the one-up too.

EDIT
Line-up not one-up
Was that with or without the shades?
Glad that Melancon was fine. Expectations are high for him but let’s just let him pitch.
Francisco Liriano made his comeback debut from TJ surgery yesterday in A ball.
He threw 5 innings and gave up 6 hits and 4 ER.
He was arguably the best pitcher in baseball when he went down with the elbow.
Melancon needs to recover from TJ and gain professional experience.
Speaking, kind of, of home-grown talent (I know someone mentioned that somewhere here), did anybody catch this tidbit in today’s Star Ledger by Ed Price:
“Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Posada are the first trio of teammates to play together 14 straight seasons since Jim Gantner, Paul Molitor and Robin Yount of the 1978-92 Brewers and the first ever for the Yankees.”
Kinda cool, no? And maybe explains why we could never envision one of the them on a team without the other.
CB.
Good post re:Liriano. The guy was lights out before the injury. These young kids….Joba,Bucholtz,Hughes,Lester,IPK and others are all an injury away from from being insignifigant in 2008. You need a ton of talent but you need some luck to stay healthy. I know that is stating the obvious but it takes just one night of one of these guys grabbing their shoulder or elbow in pain to erase all expectations.
Kerry Wood?

Igawa: must have been without shades. someone should check up on this.

Every pitcher is one injury away from being insignificant. The best you can do is teach them good mechanics, avoid overtaxing them (throwing 140 pitches in a start, say), and have as much decent depth behind them as possible. The Yanks have a kid with starter stuff in the pen, they have Horne in AAA who could pitch well, they have Marquez who could eat innings as a back-end option, they have Rasner who could throw average 5th-starter innings…There’s not much more you can do
as stated above, many of us yankee fans are huge followers of the minor league system…you only notice now because there are better kids to track, which gets more attention.
Denis,
That’s why it’s nice that the Yankees have stockpiled so many arms. The odds of some of them being injured is something to take into consideration. By having 6 or 7 potential impact pitchers, the Yanks have somewhat negated the impact of an injury to one of them.
I’m not wishing the summer away, but I cant wait till the second half to see what the Yanks may get out of a Melancon, Horne or Sanchez. If Patterson pitches well in Scranton, we could see him even earlier.
Whozat.
Agreed. It just seems more “tragic” when it happens to a rookie and or a youngster. Not sure why, just my opinion.
Detroit just lost. 0-4

“It just seems more “tragic” when it happens to a rookie and or a youngster. Not sure why, just my opinion.”
Sure. But it can actually be more damaging if it’s a vet you’re counting on. The thing with a Liriano is that he can still come back and have a fruitful career in front of him.
Also, it’s more likely for very young pitchers, as they can’t handle the kind of abuse a 28-34(ish) year old guy can. So, if you treat a 22 year old just like the 34 year old he replaced, you’ll probably wind up hurting him.
Whozat. I agree. I just think of the $ that has been made by a vet with perhaps the same or less talent. The rookies-kids have not had a chance to cash in if they had not made it to their first year of arbitration. I think of it more for the player rather than the team when I say “tragic”.

Well I did listen to the RiverDogs last night while watching the Yankee game.
You guys are lucky to have Michael Kay every day lol, I hate that mlb.tv has blackouts, I’m listening to the Rays broadcast down here in Orlando, not sure they’re worthy of doing high school baseball (still MUCH better then chicago’s announcers and a few others though lol).
“Such as last season, when mike and the mad dog, referred to Ian Kennedy, as a left handed pitcher, in the yankees system. You know, the same ones on the radio, who you said were intelligent.”
Amen Vinny-b. Amen sir. Why Pete thinks Mike and Chris are intelligent baseball people is beyond Martin. If I have a question about Mickey Mantle or Willie McCovey, then fine, I’ll call their show. But listening to them comment about baseball within the past 15 years is comical.
I can’t comment about talk radio in Boston or wherever else. But if Mike and Dog are the crown jewels of baseball radio talk, then that’s scary.
Hence, making vacuous comments about Joba’s fist pumping to fill three days of air time. Mike should stick to his horsies and Chris should keep himself busy with his Federer man-crush.
“–Dawg, I thought Martin’s comment on us was YOOOOGE.”
“–Yeah, Mike. Martin, vinny-b, nice job. Nice job.”
