Pitching matchups for the Rays series

Peter Abraham
April
4

Friday: RHP Ian Kennedy vs. RHP Andy Sonnanstine, 7:05 (YES)

Saturday: LHP Andy Pettitte vs. RHP Edwin Jackson, 1:05 (YES)

Sunday: RHP Chien-Ming Wang vs. RHP James Shields, 1:05 (YES)

Monday: RHP Mike Mussina vs. RHP Jason Hammel, 7:05 (YES/ESPN)

(This is now the correct version as Tampa adjusted the rotation after Thursday’s rainout in Baltimore. It’s raining in New York now and is supposed to rain all day Friday.)

Pete: Are you sure? With the Tampa Bay game rained out today, I heard Andy Sonnanstine is starting Friday vs us. The Rays official site also has that.

What Dain Bread scheduler brings the D-Rays up to NYC in April? Wouldn’t it have been smarter and more likely that the games are played to schedule them for Tampa? A glance at my weather forecast for NYC (I’m out on the west coast) and I see rain, rain, and rain predicted for the weekend.

  3. emobacca

No chance today’s game is being played

  4. anti-mussina

    that sucks

Just finished going through the comments. Just a couple of things.

    1. Who’s tongue was freakin’ green?
    2. What was Suzyn’s comment that was discussed in the game thread?
    3. Pete, isn’t “Pileated Woodpecker” a violation of the terms?
    4. Congrats to the other A-rod for beating the robot. I know the robot had mono. But still, good win.
    5. Nice to see Phil have a good outing. Mean K’s to the heart of the order in the 4th.
    6. Great to win a difficult series against great pitching.
    7. Inbalance of schedule means we won’t see these guys for a while.

  6. Jim Clark

    “Just win series” Joe Torre
“The Yankees don’t pay me to win every game. Just 2 out of every 3″ Casey Stengel

  7. Bleacher Creature

The Rays are in the Bronx for a 4-game series. This means Meatball leaves town unless he cuts a news CD, “Three Out Of Four Ain’t Bad”.

  8. boogi

Pete, if today’s game gets rained out, do you think they’ll skip over Kennedy (or Pettitte) and keep Wang on normal rest, or will everyone just get pushed back a day? Thanks!

  9. Thurman

Sweet, a 4-gamer with the Rays and no Kazmir to face. Start Shelley every game, sharpen his spikes, and let’s sweep!

  10. JohnC

If I remember correctly, Sonnastine stood the Yanks on their heads last time he faced them with his assortment of slop. With Yank offense struggling, he probably will again.

  11. Gus G.

JohnC– Edwin Jackson did the same. He was “effectively wild”… total junk baller when he faced them last.

  12. jay destro

im going saturday, if it is anything like last night, please please someone get me a crash helmet

  13. Rich

Pete (or anyone) – Do you think there’s any chance of tonights game being played? If not, is there any chance the Yankees would announce it early? I have tickets, and I’d hate to get to the stadium just to turn around and go home.

  14. Alex

I hope I am not alone here, but is anyone else hoping for rainout so we don’t have to watch Moose on national TV again? I am most unfortunately living in Killadelphia right now and miss the Bombers dearly, so I’d prefer if Mussina weren’t the only pitcher I get to see on tv.

Great job on the blog Pete! We do not say this enough, and we say it a whole lot.

  15. Bad Scooter

    Tough, deal with it Alex.

  16. trisha

I am hardly hoping for a rainout when Moose pitches. I think Moose did a pretty good job and look forward to seeing him next time out.

Anyone who is making light of the Rays hasn’t bothered watching their starting pitching from last year or this spring training. Plus they run like the wind, and they also have offense kids.

About tonight’s game though? If it is rained out there is one benefit that accrues to me. I hate flipping back and forth between Yankee and Sux games. I think to do any justice to trying to bring bad energy to the Sux I need to be able to concentrate on their game!

    GO JAYS!

  17. Rishi

interesting stat: HR leader is Melky…I guess I knew that but it really hit me when I saw it in print…

  18. trisha

And hey did you see Kei Igawa’s stats from last night’s start in Scranton? I don’t care if I’m the last Yankee fan standing who still believes in this guy and wants him to get his psyche straightened out (since I believe it is more that than anything that gets him into pitching trouble). He could be phenomenal in long relief or spot starts for the Yanks if someone could help get him straightened out.

  19. trisha

Proud to say that I never wanted Santana. Our kids are the present and future.

  20. anderson

umm when is andy pettite getting his number 2 spot back? i don’t wanna see mussina on that spot ever again, he should be the 4th or fifth pitcher on the rotation.

  21. RyanM

The pitching spot hardly matters anderson. The pitching matchups are already shifting due to teams starting the year off differently. The only thing that really matters is which Yankee pitcher goes after another in terms of who will eat up innings and who will use up the bullpen, so I think it’s good to see Wang before Mussina, since he eats innings while Mussina doesn’t.

  22. OldYanksFan

If tonight is rained out, will there be a double-header in the next 3 days?

  23. hughesian bias

arg! i have tickets to the game but i’m not sure if it’s gonna get rained out or not and i live in boston!!!

i hope they schedule a doubleheader for tomorrow night.

does anyone know if it’s supposed to stop raining by 7pm?
