    Great post, Pete !

  2. trisha April 4th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

God bless George Steinbrenner and everything he has done for Yankee fans and for the team. I only hope that he can truly appreciate the beauty of all that he has created, including (since he wanted it) this beautiful new Stadium.

I feel deeply and passionately enough about him as an owner that I am going to risk the wrath of Pete by violating a few of his suggestions:

    GEORGE STEINBRENNER, YOU ROCK!!!

was there any video/photos of the Boss at the Stadium on opening day or from the renaming of Legends Field?

Hey can someone help me out, what is the average speed of major league starters fastballs in all of baseball? I have a little bet going on that I need to have settled. Thanks!

  10. Irabu's Son April 4th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

What?! That looks nothing like Stein.

  11. Irabu's Son April 4th, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I guess it’s just the glasses. He looks mafioso.

  12. S.o.S.27 April 4th, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Come to think of it. I think the Yankees should have two statues in front of the new staduim. One of Jeter and the other of The Boss. Heck have Jeter holding a credit card and Stein Yelling. Like the commercial.

I walked passed it yesterday on my way to the game. It’s really remarkable. I always Park by the old Bronx Terminal Market and as I was walking up the new Ramp the built, I could see the “Yankee Stadium” and the two eagles. It’s pretty amazing. I remember when it just looked like a construction site, now it looks like a stadium. The pics online might be impressive, but in person it’s jaw dropping.

I got to admit Suzyn Waldman almost like Mama Pinstripe made me bust out

  15. Call me Stinkie - April 4th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

I bet he was too senile to even know what he was looking at.

  16. wsr April 4th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

a nice sidenote about George. I was at a ST game at legends with a group of people, one of whom was a young kid with Cerebrel Palsy. This kids dad ends up catching a foul ball off Damon…made the kids night. After the game (it was a fireworks game, so most of the regulars left early) the kid and his dad decided to wait outside, just in case. George walks out, and signs the kids ball, then tells him to hold on, walks back inside, and gets a ball goose had just signed, and gave that to the kid too.

Also, the wrath of the new parking fee’s were felt last night. It cost me $17 to park. I got there in plenty of time and got to see my favorite waitress at Stan’s. She got me and my wife a table as always. She brought us our usual pre-game snacks (she remembered!) and then asked us about our winter while shouting through rock songs blasting.

  18. Richard April 4th, 2008 at 2:01 pm

That’s the first i’ve seen the daughter. not so easy on the eyes.

  19. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 4th, 2008 at 2:02 pm

    wsr,
    nice read.

  21. chrisA April 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

I agree S.A. Mike and maddog sound like complete idiots. I guess they can’t find anything to talk about.

  22. Patrick April 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

After seeing that picture, I can’t blame Steve Swindal for drinking. Yikes.

  23. Forehead Writer April 4th, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Detroit will win this one! Write that on your foreheads!

  24. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 4th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS this is Steven A. Smith’s last Friday show !!! HALLELUJAH !!!! :D

  25. Mike from CT April 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Mike and the Mad Dog get something and run and run and run with it. Enough with the Joba thing
what about K-Rod, he screams, pumps fists, and goes down to the ground for every save. Give me a break, get off the kids case. if it becomes a problem then you can talk about it, now its just a waste of breath. Talk about when the bats will wake up

  26. DMan April 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm

He looks pretty good there. Hes standing up straight.. The picture gives the impression that hes walking fine, hes not moving around in a little golf cart or anything..

  27. S.o.S.27 April 4th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

to those who say they never had a problem wth K-Rod’s or Paplebaums antics as Yankee fans…………..I am next in line for the throne of England.

If you believe that, then I’ll believe you.

  31. Brian (from PA) April 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

by the way mike and the mad dogs are complete morons, they always have been. i learned it’s best to just not listen to them.

  32. cw April 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

90 percent chance of rain, both today and tomorrow.

  33. Dennis-Coastanza April 4th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Thanks Rebecca for the score update.

It would be great to see Detroit have a horrible April. It was amazing to see the pre-season love they got from everyone. They do have a great lineup when healthy. I think the Yankee lineup is deeper and more patient. I also think both the Sox and Yanks have a much deeper rotation in comparison. However when the media pointed to the Yanks and or Sox having rotation holes they never mentioned the Detroit void of good starting pitching.

    Central vs East.

    Yanks-Det Advantage Yanks

    Sox-Cleve Slight advatage sox

    Jays-WSox Huge advantage Jays

Rays-Twins: Too early to tell but I would say Twins(they always seem to competitive. If Kazmir was healthy it may change)

    Birds-Royals Advantage Royals

I believe the East is the best division in baseball. I may believe something different on June 1st but right now I am sticking with it.

    Have a good weekend.

The Boss looks a bit bewildered.

I posted this a couple topics back, but then realized I was falling behind, so I am pasting it here, going along with a couple of other posts:

We are through the first hour of mike and mad dog and it has been predominantly talk about joba and his fist pump. It is brutal.
Maybe we should ban all fist pumps… Tiger, no more fist pumps, you are making everyone else feel bad about themselves.
All professional sports players should be banned from showing any emotion, make them just walk around like zombies. That would be much more fun.

  36. trisha April 4th, 2008 at 2:16 pm

Hugh – only Papelsmear’s and I’ve already told you why. I really don’t care about stylin and fist pumps otherwise, no matter who does it.

  37. Brian (from PA) April 4th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

    CW

that big a chance for tomorrow too? damn. i’m going tomorrow…

  38. John in Ohio April 4th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Pudge just hit a two out, two-run double, then was singled in by Jacque Jones.

5 – 5, Tigers still batting in the bottom of the third.

Both Nate Robertson and Jose Contreras are getting bombed.

  39. Patrick April 4th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Dennis, agreed about the East being the best division. I think 4 out of 5 teams will finish above .500.

  40. Patrick April 4th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

    Brian,

Supposed to rain all morning but looks like it will be clear by game time. I’d expect a short delay though. Tonight there is very little chance that they play.

  41. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

what is it w/ Russo and that Manhattan game somebody please call him on it and set him straight.

  42. smilineyes April 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Anybody ever seen or can link to a picture of George’s wife?

As for his daughters looks, remember she is responsible for interior decorating the new stadium

  43. Brian (from PA) April 4th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

sounds alright Patrick. I’ll be sure to bring my pinstriped poncho.

  44. gayle April 4th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

brian in looking at the hour by hour on weather.com looks like tomorrow will be ok rain to stop very latest by 1pm. I think they will get the game in. Will be there as well. The issue I have is if there is no game tonight (still not raining here in the city) will Kennedy pitch tomorrow or will they keep Pettite there.

  45. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 4th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

AL East is easily the toughest division in baseball. Think of it like this: If the blue jays played in the NL, they’d probably win their division.

  46. gayle April 4th, 2008 at 2:23 pm

    smilenyes-

She threw out (or at least attempted to throw out) the first pitch at the gamein tampa renaming the park. bet if you go the yes website they have video there of it

  47. S.o.S.27 April 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Jim Leyland said that his team looked old the first 3 games. Can it be that they just traded away their future young studs and the veterans are showing their age overnight?

  48. smilineyes April 4th, 2008 at 2:24 pm

Thanks gayle. I’ll check it out and report back

  49. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness.. April 4th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Wait. No more Screamin A. Smith on the radio? WooHoo!

Yeah, why is Russo obsessed with that Manhattan game? Jeez.

Can’t wait for the new stadium.

  50. S.o.S.27 April 4th, 2008 at 2:28 pm

If these starters get out early in the Detroit game. You have to give the edge to Chicago in the bullpen.

Im going to miss Steven Smith talkin about Clemens wife for 2 months straight.

  51. smilineyes April 4th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

They showed the unveiling of the name but not the first pitch. Good suggestion though. Thanks again

  52. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness.. April 4th, 2008 at 2:33 pm

  55. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness.. April 4th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

    No problem. :)

  56. Steph April 4th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

It’s good to see Steinbrenner out and looking healthy.
The new stadium looks absolutely gigantic from that picture. Wish I could take a look at it in person.

  57. wood is good April 4th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

Despite the cloud cover, it’s been dry in midtown since 10 a.m., and the reports had called for scattered showers during the day. Who knows? Maybe they’ll get the game in….

  58. murphydog April 4th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

It’s touching to see Steinbrenner walk around the new stadium, before the first fan, the first win, the first loss. It’s The Boss shrunk down to mortal size, certain he won’t see as many games in this Stadium as the last.

While it’s not a grim picture, for some reason seeing George led around by the arm in an unfinished stadium reminds me of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas yet to come.

  59. Luke S. April 4th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Man, the Boss is aging fast. He has the appearance of someone who’s suffering cranial/circulation problems (strokes). Otherwise his color and posture seem pretty good.

  60. donnienybaseball April 4th, 2008 at 3:11 pm

its good to see the big man, he created an enterprise out of a baseball team…hope the kids can carry the franchise, so far they look more like characters in a reality show

  61. YankeesLuv April 4th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    God Bless You George!

  62. Hugh April 4th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

ok, this picture cleary disproves my theory that all rich women are at least somewhat attractive.

  63. Doreen April 4th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    Luke –

You can tell all that from this photograph? He just looks old to me. And actually, pretty good.

Some people I know went to the Stadium last night and it was the first time they’d seen the new Stadium up close. They were awed. One of them said to me, all you have to do is see it, and all the reservations you have about a new stadium disappear. They said in person it is truly majestic and the architectural details are fantastic. They were originally more on the nostalgic side – can’t get rid of the old girl, what do you need a new stadium for? They seem to be totally sold now!

  64. Doreen April 4th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

If by “smart” you mean they know what buttons to push to get “debate” going and keep their ratings up and the calls coming in, then I would agree 100%.

  65. Doreen April 4th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Oops, that post belonged in the next thread!!!! Duh.

  66. William April 4th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Wow, Big Stein has aged a lot in the past year and a half… and is it me or is George’s daughter kind of hot for a more mature woman?
