i mean first but jesus pete get some sleep…we love ya…but sleep…seriously…
quite the night owl these days pete. i feel your pain. i’m also grateful someone’s giving me updates when everbody else i know is snoring.
hope all’s well, thanks for all the work you put into the site.
Hughes was teriffic. What a great week for baseball!
Pete: Sorry your insomnia is kickin’ in but we on the West Coast are happy to have you up w/us. Great reportage, thanks, as always. The Blog makes being a NYY fan in 2008 better than…everything, ever.
BTW, re.: Hawk & the # controversy: What were his digits in Spring Training & (Clemente tribute aside) why’d he change, given superstion(s),etc.?
Wang and Hughes were huge. Two close wins against Halladay and McGowan promise nothing but good things. Last year the Yanks stunk in one-run games and extra innings. With big time starters the relievers will be saved for when it counts. IPK next!
Our boy Joba has picked up where he left off last season, too. Yes, he’ll be more valuable as a starter down the road, but right now he sure looks like a closer in training. And so full of piss and vinegar, it’s contagious when you watch him..
First, I want to say that Sam Borden’s article was terrific. I so enjoy reading whatever he writes.
Upon reflection this morning, as disheartening as it’s been to see the Yankees offense struggle a bit, it was nice to see that they could scratch and claw and eke out a narrow victory last night. They didn’t give up; they played all 8 and a half innings. For all the agita of the last 2 games, and the edge-of-your-seat quality of the first game, the Yankees came out of it winning the series, 2 of 3.
The bullpen – so far, so good.
I didn’t see all of the post-game interviews, so I didn’t see the Johnny Damon exchange. But I did see the Billy Traber one. All I can say is that if you didn’t already know he was from California, it was a fairly easy guess. Very laid back, surfer-dude-ish. (Great, great smile, too.
)
Mike Hampton, the Carl Pavano of the Braves, is on the DL yet again. Injured his chest warming up for yesterday’s game. Maybe I’m crazy but I think the powers that be are trying to tell both of these guys that they should maybe think of another career?
I hope they can get these games in the next 2 days. Weather is supposed to be stinky.
Oh, and the Traber interview, it was totally weird that both Kim Jones and Suzyn Waldman were interviewing him at the same time. Plus I hadn’t heard Waldman do an interview on YES in a while, so it was a bit of a surprise to realize the voice that wasn’t Kim’s was hers.
Great win last night, almost a playoff series type game in that it was tight, well pitched. Hughes looked super, and they were able to play for one run because they were pretty confident Joba and Mo would shut the door. And look at Molina with the hot stick and accurate arm. There’s a sense that this team believes there are good things to come.
Only issue I saw was that A-Rod, despite his two run shot the other night, looks out of sync at the plate. Not a criticism or worry, given the pitching he faced but he may be trying too hard to be Mr. Incredible. No worries. He’ll get it back.
Doreen:
I like Sam Borden too. I e-mailed him, complimenting him on his “Torre to LA” piece a few days ago, and he responded graciously.
As to Traber he was displaying what passes for intensity among Cali boys; clearly he does not want to be thought of as a LOOGY. Found it funny when Coney said on the YES post game broadcast that Traber was “flakey” but he meant that in a good way. Couldn’t figure out who the other female voice was talking to him until I read your comment.
I’m going to admit to a little ignorance here. I know what a LOOGY is, but what does the acronym stand for???? (And frankly, the acronym is not a pleasant one – I wouldn’t want to be thought of as a loogy either!)
look at expectations – great article pete! Thanks for posting it. I loved how Hughes looked last night. I have a feeling by the end of the yr, wang may no longer be considered our “ace.” An ace usually doesn’t let up more than a hit per inning and has a strikeout per inning. Hughes is clearly capable of both of those. Wang has proven he is not.
How many people think Sabathia will be a free agent this off-season? Sabathia, Wang, Hughes, Kennedy and Pettitte would make an excellent rotation next yr.
Not to optimistic they’ll get tonights game in.. Weather forecast doesn’t sound to great right now..
Dave,
My feeling is that as of this moment in time, not having had the benefit of seeing whether Hughes, Kennedy and Chamberlain perform to expectations, I would say I do not want the Yankees to pursue Sabathia. Plus, your rotation omits Chamberlain, whom I would definitely want to see starting.
Not that I’m wishing for a rain out but it makes my decision tonight easier. I was going to try and get over to Tampa and watch the youngsters play tonight. Might be fun…..
Tonight would be a good time for a 10-1 blowout over the Rays so Shelly, Betemit, and Ensberg can get a little playing time.
I love what I have seen the first 3 games of the season.
It took them almost 3 1/2 months to win a game last year when they scored fewer than 4 runs. They have already won 2 such games this year. That’s a great sign.
You start winning close games early and it usually becomes a staple for the season. Confidence grows and you end up making it something of a strength, rather than a weakness, in a given year.
Last year, this team wasn’t close to being ready to start the season. The defense was awful, the pitching was injured and ineffective, and even the offense was sluggish.
I can excuse the offense being sluggish because the weather is miserable. However, it really frosted me how unprepared they were to start the season last year and how unconcerned Torre was about it.
This year, they are playing crisp baseball to start the season. The offense will struggle in rotten weather. Just the way it is. Its clear though, with the quality of play in such rotten conditions that, unlike last year, this team was ready to start the season from Day One.
They will hit this year. Too many guys in too good a shape not to hit when the weather improves.
The PFP practice yesterday? Love it. Since 2004, this has been a very poor fundamental baseball team. That has changed under Girardi and it helped them win the Jays series.
The back to back bunts and the smart, effective use of the bullpen are also positives. Notice how Girardi is getting guys work without overdoing it. The strikethrowing from everybody on the staff and the defense are all upgrades from last April.
All in all, they gutted out a series win against a quality team in rotten weather conditions. You have to like that, even though its only April.

Aha! Thank you so much.
SJ44 -
It was very satisfying that both of the wins were one-run affairs. I agree with you that winning these types of games early on will make it easier to feel like they can be won going forward.
About the PFP: In this morning’s Star Ledger, Ed Price noted that someone had written on Mike Mussina’s whiteboard (at his locker): “Thanks for the PFP, Mike!” (Even though Girardi had it scheduled prior to Mussina’s error on Wednesday.) Again, just another example of either good stuff happening in the clubhouse, or, letting people know about the good stuff in the clubhouse for the first time in years.
Girardi has used all of his relief pitchers in the three games, yet none of them has been overtaxed. Of course, the fact that they have each gone out there and thrown strikes is key! It kind of says it’s not the number of relief pitchers you use, but how you use them. If this goes on, I think we can hope that the bullpen will remain sharp. Again, a lot depends on getting innings from the starters, too.
Don’t be surprised if tonights and tomorrows game get rained out. It’s not looking good.

“All in all, they gutted out a series win against a quality team in rotten weather conditions. You have to like that, even though its only April.”
Amen, brother.
We took 2 of 3 against playoff-quality pitching. That’s promising. Plus, a start like Mussina’s will win us the majority of regular season games (we won’t usually be facing an on-his-game Burnett). All good things.
Hughes was remarkable in last night’s game. He has a presence on the mound, to go along with all that talent. I know I’m going to be unhappy several times this year when they take him out based on pitch-counts, but they know a heck of a lot more about it than I do.
I didn’t have time to comment yesterday, so I will now. Tuesday’s game thread (the first time I’ve ever been involved in one) was enjoyable. I thought trisha hammering that guy george, although it was probably counter-productive, was hilarious.
And, those of us who are not thrilled with the thought of Mike Mussina being on the hill for 30 starts this year have a right to speak our piece objectively.
The solution seems simple enough: Ignore those who try to bait you, and keep a respectful tone in your comments.
Looks like Sheffield hurt his finger in the 4-1 loss to KC and might be out for a few days.
I thought that Phil looked terrific last night. He had the hitters guessing to catch up with his heater and the curveball was working well too for most of the night.
What is even more impressive to me is his mound presence. He looks like he is total control of himself and the game. After watching a parade of rookies come to the mound last year who were not ready for prime time (many of them much older than Phil) it makes me appreciate his maturity and “make up” even more.
More broadly – with the early season schedule so challenging, I think that because the team is healthy and in shape it puts them in wonderful position to compete effectively and avoid the hole we dug at the start of last year.
Sooner or later the offense is going to start punishing other teams. That should be fun to watch!
Italian – tonights game looks like a washout but weather.com has “AM Showers” for tomorrow in the Bronx. If anything, I believe they will delay the game tomorrow an hour or two if necessary. If the forecast stays the same the game will be on for tomorrow.
Lets hope we can somehow get these 4 games in while Kazmir is out and Garza isn’t scheduled to pitch.
I thought Phil looked amazing last night. After the first inning or two, the nervousness I get when I watch somebody (for ex. Mussina) went away. It was great to see him throw strikes and stay ahead of hitters.
He had a bit of bad luck with the bloop to left and Rios being Rios. But all is well. If that was a weaker lineup, we would have been watching a repeat of the Texas game, minus the leg tweak.
Doreen…
“Maybe I’m crazy but I think the powers that be are trying to tell both of these guys [Pavano, Hampton] that they should maybe think of another career?”
Point well take, but I don’t know. It seems to me that Carl Pavano has had a very lucrative career: $10-million/year for convincing the trainer that you’re injured. You can’t beat that, I guess. (NOTE: I’m kidding only when I accuse Pavano of faking it.)
The Yankee wins this series were good wins. Although they had very little offense they managed to play small ball and scratch out winning runs. It is only 3 games in, but this is something the Yanks did not do in the past. And we know that the bats will come around so then the Yanks should have a variety of ways to score (long ball, small ball).
Did anyone else hear what Warner Wolfe said this morning?
He was still talking about Joba and the fist bump. (I mean enough already, it happened days ago!) Anyway, he said wait till a hitter lays down a bunt for him to cover (insinuating that he would run over Joba. Also said wait till he has to bat in an NL park and it’s down goes Joba. First this isn’t the 1970′s. Second other pitchers do it all the time and it is suddenly a big issue, because he is a Yankee. I thought we weren’t relevant this year, so why is everyone paying attention to us? Why not pay attention to the Indians, Tigers who they said would dominate the AL.
Warner Wolfe should be sent to the glue factory. He is very old and tired.
Yeah I just read about Hampton being injured again. Talk about a theif and “unarmed” robbery.
Just watched the quick interview YES did with Billy Traber… He seems like a pretty cool dude.
I’m glad he made the team, and even happier he went out and threw strikes.
Mark Alan -
Ahhh! That’s the angle I didn’t look at. “Get your money for nothin’” (and in Pavano’s case) “and your chicks for free!”
Phil (only 21 years old) Hughes looked excellent tonight. With a little luck, he easily could have had a W. Too bad, but his poise etc. on the mound for such a young starter was great. And the pen was great also. BTW, the Jays pitching is going to be very good.
“He was still talking about Joba and the fist bump.”
Tell him to go watch Frankie Rodriguez and Papelbon and see how he feels about Joba after that. It’s certainly no worse than those guys.
“talking about Joba and the fist bump.”
Try this litmus test when evaluating player celebrations/demonstrable shows of emotion:
Do you think the player would act that way if no one were watching?
If the answer is NO, he’s trying to rub it in the opponent’s face or show someone up.
If the answer is YES, there’s no ill will and is much less likely to be poor sportsmanship.
I pumped my fist in my own kitchen after Joba’s Thomas K. Thomas didn’t feel like Joba was being disrespectful.
The Joba stuff is just nonsense.
People like Warner and Francesa should just shut up.
If Frank Thomas and Vernon Wells, two of the real good guys in the game, don’t have a problem with it, neither should Wolf or Francesa.
The LAST thing Joba should do is change anything. Especially, if it means appeasing Francesa.
Just do what you have been doing. Getting outs.
Its all that matters.
“BTW, the Jays pitching is going to be very good.”
If they can stay on the mound. Burnett has a disaster of an injury record, and McGowan went from 110 innings in 06 to 190 in 07. I think they have some league-average replacements in the wings, but those guys missing time will hurt. And they don’t have the offense to cover for it. Eckstein just isn’t good, Rolen is already out for weeks, and they’ve got bupkis in left. I think they’ll look good out of the gate and then start to stumble when injuries catch up with their pitching.
nice to see the yanks manufacturing runs. what are the chances torre would have bunted with melky on and damon up? i say not good. i don’t buy the argument “so and so can’t bunt” learn how. it is an important part of the game. especially if you’re a washed up hasbeen like giambi. figure out a way to help the team.
I really dont understand the whole McGowan innings thingeveryone is talking about…you know we are talking about a 26 year old that has been pitching professionally since 2000..I dont see any issues with him logging 200+ innings this season.
Jennifer
My first thought when it happened was about retaliation ramifications too. But after reading Frank Thomas’ and Vernon Wells’ comments I concluded that no one really gives a darn about it. Issue closed, Mr. Wolfe.
“nice to see the yanks manufacturing runs. what are the chances torre would have bunted with melky on and damon up? i say not good. ”
i don’t miss Torre at all, but i think he would have played it the same way.
Hmmm, I have to disagree with you. Torre would not have had Jeets bunt.
Yeah when I first saw it, I thought some PLAYERS might take exception to it. It seems as though it is the media taking exception. If Frank Thomas, and Vernon Wells didn’t have a problem, why should we, or the media have a problem. You don’t like it, don’t strike out!
“Hmmm, I have to disagree with you. Torre would not have had Jeets bunt.”
he probably would not have “asked” Jeter to bunt, but Jeter would have probably done it on his own.
Jeter will sometimes inexplicably bunt in the 1st inning. 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 8th? i think Jeter would have bunted.
i am thrilled that Girardi is here, i just don’t think it’s a given that Torre would have screwed up everything Girardi has done right so far.
i’m more interested in talking about the bullpen handling so far as compared to Torre than the bunting.
Sure he would have. Jeter bunts all the time. Too much, in fact.
The only difference after 3 games between Torre and Girardi has been bullpen usage. Joe seems to use more guys for fewer pitches/innings. Granted, a small sample size but, just an observation.
Torre would have played last night the exact same way as Girardi and even did it as late as last year.
wow, that was wierd. SJ44 and i are NOT the same person, i promise.
how long until Johnny Cueto’s arm falls off under dusty?
The rub about bunting is that if you play for one run that’s probably all you will get. Jeter is, however you want to measure it, a good hitter in those situations. If he swings away you may do better than one run, but he can also be counted on for an effective bunt.
It was cold and miserable last night making it tough to get good wood on the ball. Maybe that was the real decisive factor and maybe why Torre might have made the same decision as Girardi. Letting Jeter swing away, however, would not have been wrong.
Warner Wolfe reminds me of Larry Merchant…they both have no idea what they’re talking about anymore. Just like the Yankees are doing, they both need to move over and allow the young bucks to enjoy some shine in their professions. Again, there is just way to much attention from the media for the Joba fist pump. Leave it alone already. Please! Also, great win last night from Mr. Phranchise! I’ll take 2 our of 3. We won the series. Bring on Tampa Bay.
Frank Thomas and Vernon Wells might not have cared but not every player is going to be nice like that. I still remember Upton last year staring at Joba after he a strikeout and of course Joba pumping his fist.
Since this is the AL and Joba is not going hit. Yankee hitters could get hit.
Just something to think about.
Murphy, I wouldn’t worry too much about Rodriguez he’ll be fine.
Matsui looked really bad at the plate throughout the series as did Cano. Those two worry me far more than the reigning MVP.
I was assuming of course that Jeter was not bunting on his own last night, which as was pointed out, he is known to do. New manager may be a little more assertive with Jetes in a situation like that.
Jax, do you see any Angels hitters getting hit because of K-rods histrionics?
Hugh
You are so right. He doesn’t get ripped nearly enough over ruining Mark Prior.
All this scratching talk this morning has me itchy.
I agree that it is great to see the offense be able to scratch out runs BUT they are only able to do that if the pitching, both starting and bullpen, keeps them close.
This Yankees line-up will beat up bad pitchers. But the past 3 nights when faced with good pitching, they were able to win the ones close enough to scratch through and lsot the one that required more clawing than scratching.
Win always come down to the quality of the pitching and a little luck doesn’t hurt either.
Hmmm – i’m more interested in talking about the bullpen handling so far as compared to Torre than the bunting.
Oh, most certainly. Joe G has definitely handled the bullpen differently than Joe T and IMO in a much more efficient way.
I want an explanation as to why Suzyn Waldman still has a job. She is downright awful to listen to and on top of that all of her “information” seems stale and contrived not to mention repetitive. She has to have pictures of the big Stein banging goats or something.
That’s true but it seems like it’s always a different story when it comes to the Yankees.
Like I hardly heard if anything at all the media talking about K-rod or Paplebon celebrations. The only reason why those guys celebrations are being discussed is because a Yankee is doing it now.
I realize it is only three games, but it is good to see Joe getting everyone work. No one has rotted in the pen.
Hopefully this series Joe can get the bench guys some playing time.
as a former professional baseball player, I can tell you first hand that it pisses the batters off. Wells and Thomas are being gentelman.
CubanC
It is the same reason that Michael Kay and John Sterling broadcast for the Yankees. Someone in the Yankees likes them. Never mind that most fans can’t stand listening to either one of them.
What is worse, running a catcher over in spring training or pumping your first in excitement after you own somebody?
bullpen mgmt has definately been the most glaring difference so far. of course, a good difference.
kind of surprised shelley hasn’t pinch hit yet, but i won’t complain about it after only 3 games.
i will complain about michael kay though. i thought he was getting better last season, but so far he’s just been painful and embarrassing this year. i feel like he’s letting the tabloidish talk from his radio show affect his comments during the game too much. thank god paulie has been there.
umps: paulie has noted that it seems like the umpires have been calling higher strikes this year. to me it seems like the entire stike zone was moved up 2 – 3 inches. i feel like there are lower pitches that would have been called strikes last year that aren’t getting called this year.
I doubt teams are going to take shots at Yankee hitters with Joba, Farnsworth and Bruney in the bullpen.
They also have a manager who showed in ST, he has no problem settling “issues” in an aggressive way.
The fist pump stuff with Joba is much ado about nothing.
I agree with with SJ44…..teams will not start hitting Yankee batters because of it…but to say that the hitters dont mind it is such a crock of sh#%. Yeah, they told the media that it doesnt bother them…but have Aaron Hill or any other teammate ask them the same question…I GUARANTEE the answer is totally different…the response would be more like this. F%#&^#* that mother F^&#^#* c$$^% sucker…who the f^%#&# does he think he is, that fat mother F%$#^*&!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure if Torre would have played last nights game the same way…no way to ever know either. Anything Girardi does for this entire season will be questioned and analyzed and everybody will knock him when a scenario goes wrong. It’s unfortunate, but hopefully with the team in the shape it is in, they can endure this long season and bring home what we’re all wishing for.
How many red sox get hit because of papelbon’s (far more aggressive and overblown) antics?
Why is Joba suddenly such news? I don’t look at much sox commentary / blogging, so maybe they have the same concerns re: papelon, but in any case, I don’t see their players in any danger because of it. Also, papelbon is in his 3rd year now, so if his idiocy is acceptable, it’s absurd to get on Joba at this stage.
Yeah, I agree about A-Rod. It’s just that he looked baffled a couple of times, but there is no worry.
I think Mats was probably a little stiff in the cold with the repaired knee. As for Cano, Mats and everybody else, it was cold and Toronto’s 1 through 3 starters were real good. All three games featured good pitching and the first and third games were pretty cold. Lots of dribblers, bloops, broken bats and only a couple of liners over the first three games on either side.
Prospect updates
Whelan is said to return in a few days so will Sanchez & Claggette. LHP Wilkins De La Rosa 4 K’s, 2 BB in 2 IP he is a sit 92 – 94 mph top out at 97 mph LHP, keep an eye on this guy in Charleston, he’s developing into something special.
I cannot stand papelbon’s “glare” when he’s about to throw a pitch!! Ughhh…just thinking about it makes me sick. It was funny the first few times because I thought it was a joke.
I dont like Kay/Sterling/Waldman, but is it really that big of a deal? Half the time I watch the game Im not even paying attention to what theyre saying anyway. Its notlike Im hanging on their every word. Granted, Id like it alot more if we has the likes of Gary, Ron and Keith(who are hands down the best in baseball, nobdy even comes close…I HATE the Mets, but I watch Mets games just to listen to them, but its really not that big of an issue for me.
The Yanks did a real good jop winning this series against a tough pitching staff.
The one concern I have coming out of this series (I know it’s early) is the base running. I know that they want to be agressive, but it seems like they have made three or four outs this season trying to take the extra base.
I’m not sure if Abreu tried to take third to draw the throw and ensure that the tying run would score.
I think this really hurt them in game two.
What do you folks think?
“how long until Johnny Cueto’s arm falls off under dusty?”
doubt it he pitched 50 IP in his rookie minor league
they put him up to 130 IP and then 150 IP, so he’s on pace for 180 – 200 IP this season. No injury history yet.
You only have a problem with it cause Bobby got thrown out. If he had made it, you would have loved that they were agressive. Bobby was taking a chance. A lot of things had to go right for them to make the out. And it did, you tip your cap to them. The throw was coming home and he tried to take the extra base.
“as a former professional baseball player, I can tell you first hand that it pisses the batters off.”
They should hit a homerun the next time they face him if they don’t like his antics.
ray…thats very easy for you to say. Ill jst leave it at that.
3 baseball games in 3 days. I’m exhausted.
speaking of bobby, after making that catch where he stumbled into the tarp, i had to rewind on my tivo just to watch his facial expressions in slow motion while making that catch.
it really looked like he saw a ghost
nobody cares andrea.
rocco…..lmao
Jennifer,
You’re right, it wouldn’t be an issue if he made it, but it was the 3rd out of the inning too.
I’m not as concerned with the Bobby Abreu play. But I think they made 3 outs in game two trying to steal or score from second on a single.
The Yankees have to be agressive on the base paths and put pressure on the defense to make good plays/throws as they are probably the slowest team in baseball.
Baseball can be exhausting, but I reserve that for playoffs and WS.
Exhausted from 3 regular season games that were over by ~ 10pm?
How’s work?
She went to all 3 games. Don’t feel sorry for her.
Re Fist pumping, etc.
This is a NY-based talk radio issue. I live outside of the NY Metro area and trust me, no one is talking about this at all. It is only an issue for simpletons like Michael Kay and the embarrassment that is NY sports talk radio.
No one is getting drilled over Joba’s fist pump, Joba isn’t getting dusted in interleague (if he even gets an AB) and he certainly isn’t getting trucked at 1b (when has that actually happened?).
Move along people, nothing to see here. Or go back to bitching about Hawkins and his choice of numbers (another embarrassing fake ‘controversy’).
“keep an eye on this guy in Charleston, he’s developing into something special.”
Brandon, you’ve gotta manage your expectations. This is a kid who’s got 24 innings in rookie ball. Extremely raw, though he may have great stuff. He could be amazing three years from now, or he could be yet another guy who throws hard and never knows where it’s going. It’s REALLY early to say that he’s developing into something special.
Morning everyone! Happy Weekend! I hope they get tonight’s game in, but if they don’t, it might be a good thing. I still have 37 pages to go and I have about a week! =D
Hugh,
I’m not saying they shouldn’t be aggressive. I’m just a little concerned that they may be overly aggressive. Against a pitcher like Burnett you need to weigh trying to take the extra base versus running into an out.
I am very happy with the Yankees taking 2 of 3. I just think that base-running is something to keep an eye on.
If she actually went to all three games, then she can be exhausted. Probably went four days to get the 3 games in too.
“put pressure on the defense to make good plays/throws as they are probably the slowest team in baseball.”
No burners, but who cares when you’re generally very successful on the base paths? 4th in the AL in steals last year, 2nd the year before that. Posada and Giambi are poor baserunners, but how many catchers and first baseman are good at baserunning?
She didnt go Monday… she only went on Tuesday because the person that had the ticket for Monday couldnt go on Tuesday. She did get me a magnetic calendar though so I’ll stop bashing her now
“Against a pitcher like Burnett you need to weigh trying to take the extra base versus running into an out.”
I’m pretty sure that he did, and decided it was worth it. They had to, basically, be perfect to get him. And they were. That happens.
What about Giambi’s heads-up play that kept him out of the DP in game one that led to a run being scored?
Papplebon’s stare
another thing on Joba’s fist pumping. he’s young with under 1 year of MLB service time. Papsmear and K-rod have been doing it for years now. I really doubt Joba will continue it once he goes into the rotation.
i feel silly for still discussing this though.
I wonder why the rest of my comment disappeared??
I was saying that Pappelbon’s stare is not as funny as Piazza’s stare.
rocco loves papelbon.
whozat, I agree…thats what I was saying..the yankees take alot of chances, as they should becuase theyre not blessed with speed….and they are successful more often than not.
RE Joe’s bullpen use:
Who would have pitched the 9th if the Yanks hadn’t taken the lead?
Hugh,
You can’t get around Sterling and Waldman if you are listening on the radio (which I was). Your point is only relevant for Kay. Secondly, a batter should be more pissed at himself for striking out. If you make a good play (ie, strikeout to end the inning, hit a game-tying HR/single/etc.) you should be allowed to celebrate. This game is about having fun. And that’s what Joba is doing out there. It’s not like Joba was staring anyone down or doing the jig on the mound and pointing and Thomas. If you can’t handle a fist pump you should not be in professional sports.
Go back to last year and think about where this team is right now.
Last year if the Yankees had faced three pitching performances like the ones Halladay, Burnett and McGowan put up they would have been 0-3 without a doubt.
They just would not have had nearly enough pitching to compete with a team that could shut down the yankee hitters like that.
What I liked about this series was the variety of ways in which the yankee’s won this series. It wasn’t a one dimensional offensive barrage (not that I wouldn’t have minded seeing that…)
They won with starting pitching, they won with defense, getting guys on base and doing enough to get key runs in, they won with the bull pen (the bull pen alone in this series must have thrown more strikes than they did all of last april!).
And they also won through the maturation of younger players. Obviously Phil was fantastic last night. But how about Melky? How well did he play in this series. Game one he put on a show. But even last night – leading off the inning and getting that hit was the key trigger for them scoring that run.
Last year I don’t think Melky gets that hit.
I have no doubt that the offense is going to come. The combination of facing those three buzz saws in this weather is just tough. Good to see Abreu getting off to such a hot start.
This is a much better team than last years. It is loaded offensively, it has depth in pitching, and it may have a depth in the pen (besides Mo and Joba still a lot to prove but so far so good…)
And you have to like what Girardi has done. Putting Joba in with the game tied in the 8th sent a very clear message to the team – he was telling the team that he fully expected them to win that game, that he expected the offense to find a way to score a run and get it to Mo (who looks great…)
Joba’s only got 140 or so innings. Each one you use now is one you don’t have for down the stretch. Putting him in with the game tied was a statement.
He hardly did the fist pump when he was starting. I don’t remember seeing it a lot when he was in the minors. He may also stop as he get older and matures.
oh whozat I know, I’m not expecting him to become Santana it’s just he’s always had a special arm and is learning how to pitch at a quicker pace, remember they converted him in 06′ and he already has 2nd and 3rd pitches, I’m just hoping one day he can be an all purpose BP arm for now. But I will admit and say I am a bit too excited about his progress because we’re lefty starved here and he has a special arm.
CubanC and everyone else who doesnt think what Joba does makes hitters angry or doesnt have a problem with it.
I am willing to bey my house, my cars, my life savings, my unborn children, my mother, my dog, my sister, my father if he were alive…ok, you get the point…that before Joba came up last season and did the fist pump you all had a problem with Paplebom and K-Rod’s antics.
Here’s what Joba had to say, among other things, in Newsday today: “That’s who I am,” he said. “There’s no getting around it. I wear it on my sleeve and I always will. That’s the way I was raised and that’s the way I’ve been taught. It’s just the way I am.”
“before Joba came up last season and did the fist pump you all had a problem with Paplebom and K-Rod’s antics.”
this is the truth
by the way Mark Melancon is not hurt
Melancon was left off the lineup card by accident, and thus not eligible to pitch.
Thanks for telling everyone my life story, Rocco. Maybe now I’ll just give magnetic schedules to your dad and brother, and NOT you.
NOOOOO!
““before Joba came up last season and did the fist pump you all had a problem with Paplebom and K-Rod’s antics.â€
this is the truth”
Guess it all depends on who you ask. I have no problem with players antics. If opposing players don’t like the antics they’ll have plenty of opportunities to hit against the pitchers again.
I have a problem with K-Rod’s getting on his knees and crying, thanking god like he just saved game 7 of the world series after an insignificant game. Only becuase it’s funny. Fist pumps are ok though.
Brandon, that is great news as I was nervous when I saw that he left the game w/o facing a batter.
rbizzler tell me about it

This kid has been pitching for a year, man. I don’t care how lefty-starved the team is, this isn’t a guy that’s going to sniff the majors for several years yet. And what kind of command does he have of these secondary offerings? It sounds like he’s a thrower, given the little that I just read about him, and he’s already…what, 21?
Hugh,
You want to wire me that money or would you just rather hand me the cash?
Any updates on the weather forecast?
Still not looking good?
Ray…in the words of the late, great Old Dirty Bastard..”Ni##a please.”
Cuban C…see above
Brandon,
where did you hear that about Melancon? Just curious as I couldn’t find any updates when I checked my usual sources/blogs.
Hugh, in what level of pro ball did you flame out?
Here’s Kevin Goldstein’s take on Dellin Betances’ debut for Charleston last night:
“Betances is the kind of prospect who generates a ton of emails and chat questions. Why, you ask? First off, he’s a Yankee, and second, he’s a bit of an enigma as a six-foot-eight power arm from Brooklyn who can get it into the upper 90s but has pitched less than 50 pro innings after last year was cut short by elbow inflammation. Now all of 20 years old and still a bit of an unknown, Betances began the season in style, striking out eight over five innings while allowing three hits and a pair of runs. Players with his kind of size, body, and upside are still a rare commodity, and he’s definitely a player to keep an eye on this year.”
http://www.baseballprospectus......cleid=7318
That Charleston team is absolutely stacked with talent. Sure most of it won’t ever sniff the majors but that’s not the be all and end all of following minor league baseball.
Charleston is going to be a lot of fun to follow.
Brandon Laird – I really like his bat. I think he could be a real sleeper pick for them.
rbizzler…I never went higher than Low A ball. I really wasnt that good…..I mean, I was better than everyone in high school except for Jason Marquis (who is in the majors, but compared to the other guys I was a dime a dozen….and yes, Im extremely bitter

DMan: Supposed to rain all day.
Did anyone else see K-rod last night. Now that celebration is over the top. He got on the ground and started screaming.
Hugh,
You are correct and besides you have a lot of stuff to bet. I have season tickets, a 400-square foot apartment, a MetroCard and six Derek Jeter T-shirts. I wouldn’t bet any of it on anything. Well, other than the fact that Humberto Sanchez’s first appearance at Yankee Stadium will be the biggest deal this neighborhood has seen in a long time.
Marquis is a local guy right? The Bronx?
I have a handful of old teammates who chased the dream for little while, but none of them ever made it to the show. I do have an ex-teammate who plays pro hockey though.
“Well, other than the fact that Humberto Sanchez’s first appearance at Yankee Stadium will be the biggest deal this neighborhood has seen in a long time.”
oh trust me if they love Joba once Humberto gets to the Bronx he has a big fan base, that’s his home.
Jason Marquis is from Staten Island.
Did anyone just see on Yankees Magazine the speech that David Cone gave at the Welcome Home dinner? It was great. The replay this show often so I am sure it can be caught again. Basically he talked about how special this year could be, how he pitched at the stadium on the day The Mick dies, he pitched at the Stadium the day Joe D died, he pitched a perfect game on Yogi day. That the younger guys should not take for granted the things that happ;en at this stadium, that they are ready, do not take for granted the special things that ahppen only in NY and only at this stadium. He said there is a special feeling in the air about this year and only the guys in that room have the power to make it happen.
Did not know he had that kind of fire in him.
Rbiz….Not the bronx, Staten Island.
Good morning all,
A few things i want to touch up on. That is 2 out of 3 games that Melky has had his hand on the win. I like his patience and grinding ways this year at the plate. Reminds me of 06. Dont count him out of sticking with this team for a long time. He does the little things that help this team win. Sort of like Eckstein in 04 with the angels. I think he’ll have much more impact on our way to the title.
Second. Hughes. This guy is impressing me more and more everytime i watch him. He sort of like Mariano in that noone seems to get the fat part of the bat on the ball. Its always bleeder hits. I like how he made Thomas flinch at his curve ball. Im thinking one day we’re going to thank Cashman for not pulling the trade for Santana. So far these two have been key to our wins.
I do have to ask though. Why didnt Damon bunt in the 3rd or 4th inning when molina and Melk was on first and second no outs? We end up empty handed.I think that was an inning that if we lost, it probably would have been one of the reasons for it. Am i over reacting? Im glad that Damon hit some lazers last night though. Maybe i should thrash him the day of more often.
Arods swing seemed long yesterday. But i think he’s turned the corner in not letting a game or an at bat drag him down.
Joel Zumaya is from the Bronx too.
Marquis and Wu Tang, famous Staten Island alums.
“I do have to ask though. Why didnt Damon bunt in the 3rd or 4th inning when molina and Melk was on first and second no outs?”
in general, i am opposed to bunting so early in the game. that said, it might have to do with the fact that Molina was on second and a less than perfect bunt could be an out at 3B.
ummm Humberto Sanchez is from the BX
Joel Zumaya is from Chula Vista, Cali
Jax: that’s what I’m talking about. K-Rod is absurd. Fist pumps are one thing. K-Rod just makes me laugh.
Brandon,
my apologies for the repeat post, but where did you hear that Melancon was scratched due to a lineup card error? Just curious.

It will be fascinating to see whether the 30-inning Year After Effect Verducci and Carroll have written about derails McGowan at some point last this year.
One game isn’t large enough a sample size to draw any definitive conclusions of course. But did anyone notice last night how McGowan’s dominance began to dwindle in about the 5th inning last night? His velocity didn’t flag necessarily but his control wavered because he seemed to be overcompensating for fatigue by overthrowing. I suspect it was more the cold and the earliness of the season that accounted for it though.
Still, the Blue Jays’ greatest strength and the reason they will contend all season is that bullpen. Even without Casey Janssen and for now, B.J Ryan, they have a multitude of power arms, both lefties and righties: Downs, Tallet, League, Wolfe, Frasor, Accardo.
If Ryan is healthy, I shudder to think how dominant that bullpen will be.
I cant still hit 85 on the gun these day though…although my playing days are officially over…I tore my MCL last season playing in a friend of mines amateur league….they brought me in as a ringer and I had a phenomenal season until the last game before the playoffs when my foot got caught in the hole in the batters box dirt(the fields in those ametuer leagues are beyond bad and theyre extremely dangerous). I hit a line drive to left(Im a righty) and when I wne to tunr out of the box, the bottom of my leg staed put and the top turned…I heard a pop and hit the ground in excruciating pain….and thats all she wrote
stop talking crap about krod. he is a future yankee so are tex and cc.
Hugh,
I agree, that we are being a bit hypacritical on Joba’s fist pump and scream. Yes k rod and Paplebon eat me up inside when they do their antics. Im not biased or blind to things that are wrong with players on my team. I do think though that it was the first game of the year and that the excitement got to him. I dont see him doing it on a regular basis as those other 2 i mentioned. I do think that Girardi probably told him to tone it down, but understands that it was to an extent uncontrollable that day.
As far as Thomas and Wells. If i was them i would have said the same thing. You dont want a pitcher to think he’s in your skin.
If we have a problem with those in other teams that over react than its only fair that we dont do it ourselves. If so not accept it. I dont think Joba purposely wanted to show any on up and with all this hoopla about it he will tone it down.
An indication of the Girardi influence, Abreu crashing into the tarp to make a catch. A complete turnaround from his rep of being wall shy.
in general, i am opposed to bunting so early in the game. that said, it might have to do with the fact that Molina was on second and a less than perfect bunt could be an out at 3B.
hmmm-I get it now. I mean Molina lost yesterdays catchers race pole. Even against Fasanostache. Fair enough.
“A complete turnaround from his rep of being wall shy.”
either that or his “rep” was completely overblown.
where is my post ?
“Abreu crashing into the tarp to make a catch. A complete turnaround from his rep of being wall shy.”
seriously, if you can get a replay, look at his face during that. i thought he was going to puke on the fans in the first row…
Gayle – I missed Yankee Magazine but will set my DVR for the next airing.
Steve- Abreu did surprise me last night. Last season he is nowhere near that ball. He would have backed off.
steve-
Could be for sure!
Abreu in general just looks so much healthier and happier then he did at the beginning of last season. Everytime they show him in the dug out or on base he’s got a big smile on his face.
“One game isn’t large enough a sample size to draw any definitive conclusions of course. But did anyone notice last night how McGowan’s dominance began to dwindle in about the 5th inning last night?”
KS,
Your point about McGowan and his workload is a really important one for the AL East as a whole. He threw over 80 innings more in 2007 than 2006 – that’s a massive increase in innings.
He now looks like he’s coming into his own as a potential front line starter.
I’m really not sure why they kept throwing him out there last year when they were so far back in the division. He was still throwing through a tired shoulder in September. It was really puzzling.
Last night however, I think his tiring was just the normal kind of tiring you see during a pitcher’s first outing of the season. Don’t think it was anything other than him still building arm strength.
If he does get hurt over the next couple of years there’s going to be a lot of head scratching.
Janssen had a large increase in the number of innings he threw in the minors. Now his career may be over. Torn labrum is not easy to come back from.
Does anyone know if Meechem gave Abreu the greenlight to tag and try to get to 3rd on Giambi’s fly ball that scored Jeter last night? Or whether he helped Damon decide whether to run on the wild pitch? (I know A-Rod didn’t help on that one, first
telling Damon not to come home and then switching to a short series of tiny waves).
Those base-running problems worry me, and I wonder what role Meechem played in them.
My other question is whether it’s reasonable to have expected Girardi to try to get Duncan into one of these games. He had said he wants to get him at bats, and with the way Matsui still doesn’t look 100%, I would have liked to see Matsui sit the 2nd or 3rd game to let Duncan have a game.
“Those base-running problems worry me, and I wonder what role Meechem played in them.”
what “problems” were those?
Damon scoring comfortably on a wild pitch?
or Abreu getting thrown out on a perfectly executed relay?
Thought this was amusing:
From the Toronto Sun:
“When you get to the eighth inning and start matching relief pitchers with the Yankees, it can feel as if you’ve brought a butter knife to a gun battle.”
-Ken Fidlin
http://torontosun.com/Sports/B.....1-sun.html
Bobby ran on his own, sometimes you got to give credit to the OF Alex Rios has one of the best arm in the majors, Damon scored easily on a WP , Meechem had no bad roles last night how about Jetes scoring on the flyout does Meechem get credit for that ?
Steve–
Girardi said on WFAN yesterday that Duncan would get into a game this weekend.
I think the Abreu out at third play was as more due to Overbay cutting off Rios’ throw and getting it to 3rd rather than letting it go all the way thru to home.
BLOOD AND GUTS BASEBALL THIS WEEKEND
Girardi has the potential to be a great manager, The combination of his baseball instincts, hard work, and the group of players he has to choose from could be a winning combination.
That being said he doesn’t have a magic wand and giving him credit for Abreu not being afraid of a tarp is funny to me.
Given the score, how late it was in the game and the fact that it was Rios throwing the ball, Abreu probably thought that the throw would not get cut off as the Jays would try to get Damon at the plate to prevent the run.
With Mariano ready to come in if they took the lead, cutting the ball off and letting the run score makes it very likely the yankee’s would win that game.
It was the right play by Abreu. Who knows, maybe him running was the reason why the throw was cut off.
It’s remarkable how this whole Bobby Meacham is a problem theme has become such a recurrent issue and so settled in people’s minds based on a couple of spring training plays.
If you look for a problem that your convinced exists you’ll usually find it.
How about we give Meacham one month before getting worried about him?
“I am willing to bey my house, my cars, my life savings, my unborn children, my mother, my dog, my sister, my father if he were alive…ok, you get the point…that before Joba came up last season and did the fist pump you all had a problem with Paplebom and K-Rod’s antics.”
Hold on to your family! I couldn’t care less about Papelbum or K-Rod doing what they do. Though I do have to say, Papelbum looks like he’s taking a dump and K-Rod looks like he’s got vertigo while Joba just looks cool.
I’ll take 3 out of 4 from the dreaded Kings Of March…but am of course rooting for and think that it is entirely possible that we Sweep Those Bastages !
Do you see either Melky or Shelley dropping their appeal? Although I read that they seem to think Shelley’s suspension will be totally wiped out.
I suspect it’s also because many of us loved– LOVED– Larry Bowa. Meacham, in contrast, conjures up that Yankee past we’d all assume forget.
No kick on Meacham. I just miss Bowa as much as I miss Torre. Actually, my rational side misses Bowa more.
On the wild pitch, Damon got off to a very slow start (even the announcers on YES mentioned that), but he scored easily because the ball wound up going so far away. Now, it’s entirely possible that what slowed him down was A-Rod’s “stop” sign, but I just wondered if anyone saw or heard what Meechem was doing. It turned out not to matter, but it could have. As for Abreu getting thrown out, yes, it was a well-turned relay, but it wasn’t anything that special and given that the ball wasn’t that deep, it really surprised me that he tried to get to 3rd. Maybe it was designed to help assure that at least Jeter would score by diverting the throw, but I doubt it, and it killed some momentum.
So given Meechem’s spring training problems (particularly with A-Rod), it just made me wonder. Nothing terrible, but potentially telling.
Thanks for the update on Duncan. I hope he can continue his hot spring training hitting. Down the road more, I really hope we can see the old Matsui back. He constantly looks off balance at the plate. Maybe as he gets strength and confidence in the knee things will improve.
I think the Yankees have bigger concerns than Meachem at the moment.
however, the flipside is that if Meachem is our biggest issue, what does that say about this team?
The weather sucks today. Probably no game. Oh well
That seems fair enough. Just to make this clear, though: I was only asking the question of what Meechem did on those plays. I had no idea myself, so I was wondering if anyone saw or heard. I wasn’t suggesting that he screwed up because I had no idea what he was telling the runners. There’s no question that many of us had a lot of confidence in Bowa and not nearly as much in Meechem, which I think is a legitimate attitude at the moment, but I’m willing to see what happens and not pre-judge too much. But that’s why I was asking the question, rather than just spouting off that Meechem screwed up when I had (and have) no idea if he did.
Rebecca – great point. Last season we were concerned about who would be starting the next game and if there was a limit on the amount of pitchers that could be put on the DL!
As Brandon said before Melancon is fine. Luis Sojo the Tampa manager forgot to put him on the roster and it was only discovered after he was announced into the game (and then had to be pulled).
Here’s a link from someone who was scouting Porcello at the game (via river avenue blues):
“- Mark Melancon is not hurt. He didn’t enter the game after throwing warmup pitches (that I took video of and analyzed like the Zapruder film), because T-Yanks Manager Luis Sojo forgot to put him on the roster. Just a simple brain fart. Don’t feel bad for freaking out though Yankee fans, until the game ended and this was figured out, Yankee brass in the stands were in a state of panic as well.”

“Kings of March” – as intellectually inspiring, Pete, as saying “YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!”
One thing that has never failed to amaze me is how depracating fans can be of other teams. I have always considered that to be sad, pathetic, juvenile, classless, insipid and every other negative you can think of. Unless of course the team is the Dead Sux. Then I say depracate away!
However, this is what I posted about the Rays on another thread here:
“Anyone who is making light of the Rays hasn’t bothered watching their starting pitching from last year or this spring training. Plus they run like the wind, and they also have offense kids.”
On another note, I just heard on WEEI that Buster Olney is reporting that the Dead Sux are actively looking for a catcher. Could it be a typical case of Yankee envy? So they see that Jorge is down for several games and that titan Jose Molina carries on without missing a beat. And they think to themselves, “What ever would we do if “Tek” went down. They have Jose Molina, we have, er, Kevin Cash…
I can’t go to tomorrow’s game. I have Tier MVP Box seats Row D behind home plate. I can e-mail the tix as long as you can print them out.
I’ll take whatever I can get for them. If anyone is interested, just make me an offer(any offer). They are really nice seats!
Thanks.
Yeah it doesn’t look like we’ll get the game in tonight.

” for Abreu getting thrown out, yes, it was a well-turned relay, but it wasn’t anything that special and given that the ball wasn’t that deep, it really surprised me that he tried to get to 3rd.”
it is because the ball wasn’t that deep that you assume the Jays would try to get the runner at home.
“Now, it’s entirely possible that what slowed him down was A-Rod’s “stop†sign, but I just wondered if anyone saw or heard what Meechem was doing.”
right, the runner usually looks to the batter who has the best view. A-Rod initially held him up until the ball got further away. Meecham had nothing to do with it.
however, the flipside is that if Meachem is our biggest issue, what does that say about this team?
I dont think thats the biggest issue. Girardi needs to work hard with Arod in getting the catchers mask out of the way. He totally whiffed at it. I cant believe how poor he executed the play. He could have put Damon on the shelf for awhile. Take notes Joe.
Trisha: Well, the Sox did release Mirabelli before the season, I guess they need someone to catch Wakefield.
Tampa is an improved team, but as long as they keep Longoria in the minors, it’s hard to take them too seriously. Also, Kazmir is still on the DL and he is easily their most important starter.
Jen: From that forecast it looks like the entire weekend might be shot.
Steve-
Nice website!, are you & Dr. Acula in cahoots together?
“I am willing to bey my house, my cars, my life savings, my unborn children, my mother, my dog, my sister, my father if he were alive…ok, you get the point…that before Joba came up last season and did the fist pump you all had a problem with Paplebom and K-Rod’s antics.”
Hugh, not I my friend. I thought K-Rod just looked kind of weird. Styling has never offended me, even when Manny is just being Manny. I consider Manny harmless and dumb. HOWEVER, when it comes to Papelsmear, yes indeed I took exception. But that had more to do with his disgusting bravado attitude and self aggrandisement that he has never tried to hide from the press or anyone else. The second coming of Mariano? Needs to set a standard for closers by asking for more money when he isn’t even arbitration eligible – and the Dumb Sox give it to him? Yeah his fist pump reads “all about me”. Joba’s doesn’t begin to suggest that to me.
A .0000000000001 second decision by Meecham sparks a 1000000000000 second debate. I love it.
If they don’t play the game tonight, when do you guys think they will try to make it up?
Clay Buchholz stole my laptop – how many seats?
I only laugh at Papelbon’s stare because it’s goofy. And ugly. And not intimidating at all. His fastball is intimidating. The snout is not.
I do have a problem with Josh Beckett’s mouth. Swearing and pointing. Such a tough guy. As if anyone wants to want to fight.
I also have a problem with Boston’s pitchers who hit our guys. Now, I don’t want to pick that scab. It might be might imagination, but it seems to happen frequently.
Other than that things pitchers do don’t bother me.
Looks like tomorrow will be the game mostly likely to be played this weekend.
Weather.com seems to show rain stopping around noon tomorrow.
Rebecca, interestingly I believe that Sonnestine did more damage to us than Kazmir, especially during his second outing. I watch a lot more baseball than just Yankee baseball only because I am in the Sux market and try to bring as much bad energy as I can to their games! Thank you, thank you. In the process, I have gotten to watch a lot of Rays games. Seriously they can do damage. I know I never underestimate them. In fact I admire what they have built from virtually nothing.
About releasing Mirabelli – they knew Wakefield was going to need a catcher before they released Mirabelli. Theo’s statement at the time was that they had paid close attention to the situation and they wouldn’t have released Mirabelli if they didn’t feel that Varitek and Cash couldn’t do the job of catching Wakefield. Oh well!
About Meachem. If I can’t get real excited about Yankee players and Yankee losses, I can’t get excited at all about anyone’s concerns with Meachem. You can’t blame Meachem for runners getting thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double while running with their heads down after looking into right field. Jays have power arms. It happens.
my god what is it w/ FATCESSA STFU ALREADY IT’S LIKE HE’S PROMOTING! Joba is going to be a SP in 2nd half
I wouldn’t be surprised if they got the game in tonite. It is drizzling here and there in NY right now and that’s the prediction last I heard.
Its possible they squeeze the game in tonight but not likely. They will be fine tomorrow, perhaps an hour delay if anything. Sunday will be beautiful weather.
What is Francessa saying now, I don’t have access to a radio at the moment?
I never thought i would say this but im glad Sheffield will not go on the dl. I read an article yesterday about Bonds. In that he still has a chance to make a team if some contender loses their dh. Its funny how Mattingly and Bonds were my favorite players growing up. But as a kid you never pay attention to your heros attitudes. Now he is #1 on my most hated list. He’s comes from a city i lived in for a little while and the stories iv heard about him are sickning. Wouldnt sign anything for teammates kids. Special privilages in the locker room. Heres to this roid head retiring not by choice.
“What is Francessa saying now, I don’t have access to a radio at the moment?”
same as always FATMAN speaks keep Joba in BP all year to the world soon idiot fans want to follow.
Saucy,
2 seats.
trying to talk my father into going, but it’s not looking good. he’s old and doesn’t like the possibility of bad weather
We are through the first hour of mike and maddog and it has been predominantly talk about joba and his fist pump. It is brutal.
Maybe we should ban all fist pumps… Tiger, no more fist pumps, you are making everyone else feel bad about themselves.
All professional sports players should be banned from showing any emotion, make them just walk around like zombies. That would be much more fun.
