Hu’s on first? No, he’s the shortstop

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 05, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

So I get to the ballpark this morning and I ended up in an Abbott and Costello routine with Chien-Ming Wang.

Here’s how it went:

Wang: “The Dodgers have a player from Taiwan at shortstop.”

Me: “Oh yeah? Who’s that?”

Wang: “Hu.”

Me: “Right, that’s what I asked, who?”

Wang: “Hu.”

Me: “I’m asking you. Who is it?”

Wang (laughing): “His name is Hu.”

It turns out that the player is Chin-Lung Hu, who Wang knows from his Little League days in Taiwan. It was pretty funny for a few seconds. Bobby Abreu, who overheard the whole thing, was cracking up.

they’re laughing which means they dont care about losing.

Nope, totally true. Wang was cracking up.

    Pete,

That’s funny, but I’m rolling my eyes at you because you’re so culturally challenged.

  5. Laura April 5th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

I wonder if CMW knew the Abbott and Costello joke. Then he’d really be laughing.

  6. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Pete, please tell me Wang knows about Abbott and Costello? Or at least you told him?

  7. Dee April 5th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

    anti-mussina, are you also anti-fun? Just curious…

  8. Laura April 5th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

To all of us out there upset with the Yankees slow start. Look on the bright side – we could be DET.

  9. Gersh April 5th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

I get the Feeling that Bobby laughs at alot of things. He always seems to be having fun out there. And as for CMW this only adds to my theory that CMW is one cool dude. I see him in the dugout on his off days and he seems like a cool kat. And to the person who tried to collate my main man Pete’s story and the Yankees not caring i hope your not serious cause that is sad. Thanks for the story Pete this are the type of things i love to hear.

    Awesome story Pete!!!

  11. Mr. Mientkiewicz April 5th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

    Bring back Doug.

  12. Craig April 5th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Yes, please please please bring back Dougie Mientkiewicz. I really liked his glove, and I thought he was a cool guy too.

  13. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness.. April 5th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

  15. Neal Huntington, Pirates GM April 5th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Unfortunately, Mr. Cashman has already nixed a Doug Mientkiewicz for Phil Hughes trade.

  16. V April 5th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

    I just found this – I thought it was a laugh: http://www.theonion.com/conten.....e_to_trade

  17. Mr. Mientkiewicz April 5th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Yes I agree. I thought they should have kept him. Too early to get worried, but when will the Yankees realize defense is important. They essesiatly lost these two games because of defense at first and left.

  18. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 8:05 pm

Which is why it’s a good thing we get Melky back tomorrow.

  19. Mark Alan April 5th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

    That’s pretty much priceless, Pete.

I love your blog. Love it!

  20. Mr. Mientkiewicz April 5th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Very true, thank God Melky’s back tomorrow. Does anyone think Matsui will be traded at some point this year?

  21. Laura April 5th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

“Very true, thank God Melky’s back tomorrow. Does anyone think Matsui will be traded at some point this year?”

I hope not. I’m one of those who believes in Matsui. I think that in the end, he’s going to be a big help to us. No, not in LF, but at the plate. I’d rather have Matsui as DH than Giambi.

  22. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I’m not sure who you can trade Matsui for at this point; isn’t he a free agent after this year, anyway?

He can still help us with his bat.

  23. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

    Memphis just defeated UCLA.

  24. Stan April 5th, 2008 at 8:29 pm

    Rebecca:

Matsui and Damon are signed through 2009 at $13M per season.

  25. Evil Empire April 5th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

on a sidenote- giambi should be the poster boy for steroids and not bonds…look how often his body breaks down and is on the dl

  26. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

Stan: Ok, wasn’t sure if it was this year or next.

  27. Yazman April 5th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

    Chicken Littles out there:

Yes, Yanks are now on pace for 65 wins. And had one of these games gone the other way, we’d be on pace for 97 wins. Let’s keep the sample size in mind.

Oh, and very good story, Pete!

  28. Flaz April 5th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

As a long time Canadian subscriber to MLB.Com I am puzzled where the Condensed Games went!! They were the main reason I subscribed, and they have been there for years. Where are they?!!!!

Does anyone know what’s going on?

    Thanks.

  29. CL April 5th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

    hey Monkey Breath,
their offense is still as anemic as last postseason. And that’s a reason to be despondent. They won’t get far this year.

  30. Melissa April 5th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

    That’s pretty funny.

  31. Steph April 5th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

  35. yank fan in San Francisco April 5th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

I have been reading and enjoying this blog for a couple of months. It is a lifeline for a Yankee fan marooned in a city full of Yankee haters and Red Sox Nationites. Are there any other Yank fans reading/posting who reside in SF?

  36. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 5th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

After reading today’s game posts thread then the following threads I found two posters that were absolutely annoying, I mean annoying to the point you’d think they were trolls but they are actually Yankee fans, again my advice is understand the first 20 games is a feeling out process w/ a ball club in a new season so let them develope under this regime, don’t whine and bitch after 5 games.

Oh and what the hell is everyone’s issue w/ Robi Cano ? he’s 24 he’s now the 6th hitter let him develope, today our SP wasn’t good, Tampa’s was better and shut up about Kevin Long ! why does he have a job ? go ask Carlos Pena who fixed his swing to become comeback player of the year, or go ask Robi and Bobby who fixed thier swings after a poor start last season or Alex’s approach. Lastly there are 2 posters here that continue to beat the Johan Santana subject to death, again we chose we’d rather not END OF STORY.

  37. sunny615 April 5th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

It would be curious if upon Melky’s return, the Yanks go on a 10 game winning streak

  38. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 5th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I think the issue of the past 2 days is the absence of Joe Girardi, I don’t care what team you are your not gonna play as sharp w/ your top manager, that you can sense. The good thing is we could have been 0 – 5 but manage to stay respectable at 2 – 3 and gutted out 2 games because of the SP, the BP is better than last season, the offense will come on that I’m not worried about.

  39. mel-173* April 5th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Anyone watching this second semifinal on tv?

Kansas is ripping UNC apart. They’ve had 3 picks on NC’s last 3 possessions.

    I’m really enjoying this.

Hansbrough has that “What’s going on?” look. Oops. He always has that look. Did you ever notice that he hikes his pants up, only to keep pulling them down?

  40. David April 5th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Anyone freaking about the result of the first 5 games shouldn’t be allowed to watch baseball anymore.

  41. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

David, but what about the masochists?

  42. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 5th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I meant to say w/o the top manager you can’t expect a team to play sharp and better that Melky has served his susp. games already.

Alan Horne had a very good showing in his AAA debut, Patterson is throwing a change up now so 2nd half he’ll have another weapon when he’s called.

    oh yeah RHP Jairo Heredia 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1.82 ERA

the Braves announcer was gushing about him, as dominating a Class A debut he has ever seen from a 18 yr. old SP.

  43. EY April 5th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

It sucks to lose, but to think about it, Boston already lost two games to Toronto.

  44. John April 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Ya, these 5 games are a pretty good indication of how the season will go. Looks like the Rays will win the division once again. Naturally, the Orioles will finish 2nd and the Red Sox will finish 2nd to last. That sounds about right. Oh, and it’s nice to see the Royals will once again be taking home the AL Central crown.

  45. Laura April 5th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

    Brandon and David,

I understand that some of the posts found on this site annoy you. However, this is a free country and you can’t tell people what to say or feel. I see a lot of posts on here that annoy me as well. Do you know what I do with those posts? I ignore them. I don’t write posts telling people how to manage their feelings, stress or paranoia.

Did I want the Yankees to go 162-0? Absolutely! Does the fact that they are starting off slowly make me sick to my stomach? Most definitely. Am I going to post about that on this blog? Already have. Do you have to like it? Not in the least. But what you can’t do is tell me that I can’t or shouldn’t watch baseball anymore or post my feelings. I’ve been a Yankee fan since I’ve been in the womb and I’m not going to stop following, cheering, stressing or crying over my team because you say so.

  46. mel-173* April 5th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

    David,

I don’t know that they’re freaking out about the record. They’re just using it as an opportunity to talk about what could’ve been. What trades weren’t made, what free agent (1) we shouldn’t have signed, what reliever didn’t make the club.

  47. Blargh April 5th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Don’t forget the Tigers being on track for 0-162! ;)

  48. Will to the M April 5th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

    nice find, klem!

CMW pitching bottom of the 9th in a 17 -10 game…guess he was a middle reliever over there, hence using only a 4seamer and slider in his repertoire. His slider looked good, but this was his pre-sinker days, eh?

  49. JoeT YANKEES April 5th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

well i hate anyday that we lose.. puts a damper on it, but lets be honest the Yankees are going to score runs, we’re going to win games…. April 14th I’ll be in Tampa and actually get to see them :)

OT: Memphis is awesome, Kansas is destroying UNC, the announcer declared the game over with 7:30 left in the first half

Saw this on the yesnetwork message board
    http://yesnetwork.prospero.com.....;tid=41701

    Right Now…

The Yanks are playing poorly. Hawkins and Farnsworth stink. The offense is pretty much ice-cold. Kennedy is a concern until he gets going.

The Yanks are playing poorly. They are 2-3, in last place in the American League East, 1 1/2 games out of first.

    Right Now…

Alfonso Soriano is hitting .059, David Ortiz is hitting .111, Matt Holliday is hitting .071, Mark Texiera is hitting .105, same as Placido Polanco, Eric Byrnes is hitting .125, Jose Vidro is hitting .133.

The following players have combined for 0 HRs on the season: Troy Tulowitzski and Matt Kemp and Ian Kinsler and Hanley Ramirez and Aaron Rowand and Mike Cuddyer and Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson and Hunter Pence and Alfonso Soriano and Mike Lowell and Carlos Beltran and Troy Glaus and Geoff Jenkins and Magglio Ordonez and Paul Konerko and Miguel Tejada and Jose Guillen and Andruw Jones and Carlos Delgado and Ivan Rodriguez and Corey Hart and Delmon Young and Prince Fielder and and Nick Swisher and Austin Kearns and Alex Rios and Adam Dunn and Albert Pujols and Ken Griffey, Jr.

The following players don’t even have a single RBI: Travis Buck, Troy Tulowitzski, Felix Pie, Daric Barton, Swisher, Holliday, Jorge Cantu, J.J. Hardy, Adam LaRoche, Jhonny Peralta, Garrett Atkins, Jason Bay, Julio Lugo, Lowell, Polanco, Orlando Cabrera, and Ordonez.

The follwing starting pitchers all have ERA of 6.00 or higher: Pedro Martinez and C. C. Sabathia and both Ted Lilly AND Gil Meche and Javier Vazquez and Paul Byrd and Justin Verlander and Ian Snell and now John Maine, and Bonderman and Oswalt are over 5.00.

The following “good” relievers all have ERA of 6.00 or over: Damaso Marte, Tom Gordon, Brandon Lyon, Eric Gagne, Luis Vizcaino, Al Reyes, Matt Capps, Trevor Hoffman, Huston Street, Bobby Howry, Kevin Gregg and Jose Valverde.

    Right Now…

The Royals and the Rays lead their divisions. The Orioles and the White Sox are over .500. The Tigers are 0-5. The Red Sox are in 4th. The Phillies are in 4th. The Braves are tied for 4th-5th. The Cubs are in 5th. The Cards are 4-1, and tied for 1st. The defending NL Champ Rockies are 1-3 and in 4th place.

The Yanks are playing poorly. They are 2-3, in last place in the American League East, 1 1/2 games out of first.

    Right Now…

    …means almost nothing.

  53. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pm

You know, this is why I like baseball:

In basketball (and hockey and football) you play against a clock, so even if UNC decides to put something together they might not have enough time to physically do it.

With baseball on the other hand, it ain’t over till out 27 is made.

  54. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 5th, 2008 at 9:41 pm

Laura here’s the thing w/ posters like Fleas and Anti-Muss they take annoying to the next level, I bet Johan would go more than 5 IP, bet you rather have Johan , Santana would look good in a Yankee uni right about now, then the stupidity… when they quote rumors from George King, from Joel Shermman and tell it to us as facts to back up thier arguements…that’s more Fleas style I choose to ignore it at times but it can piss people off from posting here.

Here on this blog if your going to listen to posters those 2 would be the last I would want to listen to. We have respectable posters like CB,whozat,SJ44… and then we have the whiners like Fleas and Anti-Mussina (all is done, season over, they suck, why is this guy here, why is Santana here) you see where I’m getting at.

OFFTOPIC..Memphis kicked as* tonight now I have to burn my bracket because they knocked out my pick to win it all.

Please note I am nowhere as good as Dr Acula but below is the link to my 2008 Yankee Season photos. As I have said earlier I am going to document the last season in the stadium so there are some photos I would normally have no interest in taking ie Michael Kay but if you are going to document then you need to do it all. These will be taken from my seats in the Bleachers (ie opening day) as well as my regular seats in LF.

  77. anti-mussina April 5th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

    let’s take a look at some of cashman’s failures…

-Pavano – cashman was tricked by theo into signing this guy. Lives on the DL.
-Igawa – failed to get dice-k so yankees PR tried to build him up as “big game pitcher” … not quite. Now a full time AAA pitcher.
-Farnsworth – 100 mph meatballs + cant locate
-Hawkins – wanted to save money so he picked up this scrub. He didn’t have a problem forking 28 million for a 45 yr old roger clemens last year though.
-Not trading for Santana – best pitcher in baseball goes to rival mets.

    tips for idiot cashman:
    +trade for texeira
+sign barry bonds and bat him behind a-rod
    +start chamberlain
    +bring up gardner & horne

    -get rid of matsui
    -get rid of mussina
    -get rid of farnsworth
    -bench damon
**URGENT** – fire hitting coach kevin long – hes gone under the radar long enough.

    the lineup will be:
    melky CF
    jeter SS
    abreu RF
    arod 3B
    bonds DH
    texeira 1B
    posada C
    cano 2B
    gardner LF

    wang, pettitte, hughes, chamberlain, kennedy
bullpen- bruney, traber, patterson, albadlwdjeo, horne, ohlendorf, rivera

Bonds would never survive in NY, the fans would revolt.

Or, at least, they should. Never mind that Bonds can’t play in the field any more and we’ve got a great DH option in Shelley Duncan (so far, anyway), but he is not a guy you want on your team, or, more specifically, in your clubhouse.

You forget the trade Cashman made for David Justice that got us hardware in 2000. Or Clemens for Wells that got us 1999. Or NOT trading for Gagnè last year.

The point is, Cashman, like any GM, is human and makes his share of mistakes.

But really, you sound like you’d rather have Steve Phillips or Omar Minaya or Dan Duquette in the GM chair.

Do you have any idea what it would take to get Teixeira? If the Yankees can get Teixeira for a steal, then go for it, but the Braves are not exactly an easy team to fleece. And besides, you still have the rest of Giambi’s contract to eat up as well.

I hope the best for Gardner, really, I do, but what has he shown besides speed and some good ST at bats? If he comes up this summer and makes a splash, so be it, but I’ll take Melky in center.

And, oh-by-the-way, A-Rod, among others, credits Kevin Long for his success last year.

  84. gayle April 5th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Ok Anti Mussina you have now totally lost your marbles and glad to say you have nothing and no power wih this team whatsoever.

Bonds here – let me say if they sign him I will give away my season tickets that would be the wrong move in every way shape or form. He is a cancer to any locker room. He could not deal with the New York media and the fans would be all over him you think they gave it bad to Arod??

Texiera – Why should we trade for him now when we can have him as a free agent next year. The Braes going to give him away for free?? I dont think so they will want one of the big three for sure.

Kevin Long is considered one of the best hitting coaches in the game after 5 games you want to fire him why dont you fire all the coaches at this point since no one has done thier job to your satisfaction. Did you think they should fire Long when they were hitting the pants off the ball in thesecond half of last year. Or when Arod had amonster year and he attributed a lot of it to the work he did with Kevin Long?

Brandon: Ah. I feel much better now. But CB knows a helluva lot more than I do.

Jennifer: If you’re worried about parking, the best option really is to take the train in. You’re in North Jersey, right? Bergen County? I forget what town you said you were in but if you can drive to the train station on Ridgewood train station (no meters or permits needed on weekends), hop the next outbound, switch at Seacaucus to the next train going to NY Penn (outbound track 2, always, and they come roughly every 10 minutes or so), and then from NY Penn take the subway (or if you have $$$$$$, grab a taxi). The entire train, including time for the switch, takes about an hour and you don’t have to worry about parking. Or gas money. And the Subway stops right there at the stadium so you do n’t have to walk far if it’s freezing cold or whatnot.

  94. anti-mussina April 5th, 2008 at 11:05 pm

bonds going to ny will make him public enemy #1 and take a lot of the pressure off arod (something jeter refuses to do). He will also back up a-rod like a true teammate unlike derek choker.

kevin long arod kevin long arod, blah blah blah. how come i only hear compliments from arod? if he’s so good to arod he should become his personal trainer. he doesn’t do anything for damon, cano, jeter, giambi, matsui, etc. i bet they dont even consult him for help because they have no respect for a nobody like kevin long. who is he anyway? tino should be the hitting coach.

  95. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 11:06 pm

(I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to do that entire thing in one breath, my apologies)

  96. gayle April 5th, 2008 at 11:07 pm

Jennifer I usually get there about 30 min before gates open at the latest so if the game is 1 then gtes open at 11 I get there no later than 1030am. No problems getting in anf parking and fining a spot.

Leaving that is a different story. Opening Day rainout it took me 2 hours to get home and 1 hour of that was getting out of the lot but I think a lot of that had to do with everyone leaving at the same time.

When I went Wednesday night left after 5 no problem and no traffic. Today left after 8 again no problem.

Again when leaving the lot the trick is to not go on the Deegan make a left out of the lot then take a right onto River Ave you will see a sign that says alternate route to Harlem river Drive/GW Bridge I think it is either the first or second right you cross the 145street Bridge then follow the signs that say Alt Harlem River Drive/GW Bridge you miss all the problems that are the Deegan

Rebecca i’ve been debating about taking the train. But it would be like 1 1/2 hours getting there and likely more going home. I’d rather be in my own car.

gayle I think I know which way you are talking now. I got stuck going that way once, cause they closed the street that goes by the Bronx Terminal market. You’re right it saved a ton of time! Plus I’ll have tom tom with me, he won’t stear me wrong, at least I hope not!

  98. gayle April 5th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Rebecca I agree with you if there is one thing the Yankees and MTA and NJ Transit need to do when they open the new stadium is look at some other public transportation for those of us coming from Jersey. They are dealing with the COnnecticut and Westchester COunty people but have totally forgotten about us when it comes to public transporation for there not to even be a NJ transit bus that goes to the STadium is a disgrace. They tell everyone not to dirve but give you no options but to take multiple buses, trains and subways to get there. Makes no sense.

  100. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708 April 5th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

“True teammate” and “Bonds” should not be used in the same sentence. Really, do you know anything about this guy?

Also, it’s not technically Derek Jeter’s job to back up A-Rod–because the guy that hits in the two spot will always hit before the clean up man unless you’ve decided to scramble the batting order.

Yes, Jeter’s in decline. Yes, he can’t make some of the plays he used to be able to, but that doesn’t mean he is not important. The amount of times he has come through in the clutch far, far exceeds those that he hasn’t. He’s not the most talented Yankee, sure, but he’s, by all accounts, one heck of a teammate.

I mean, do you remember the 2004-2006 seasons at all? There’s a reason we collapsed, and a reason we couldn’t get past the first round, and unlike 2007 it had nothing to do with the 11th plague.

A-Rod is not the only one that has spoken in defense of Kevin Long. I think Melky and Canò have as well, though I might be mistaken.

However, when A-Rod had 54 home runs last year, and lead the league in RBI, while maintaining a +.310 average, his words as regards hitting carry a heck of a lot of weight.

    Oh, also, last year:

Runs scored per game: 5.98 (1st in AL)

Team average: .290 (1st in AL)

    Hits: 1656 (1st in AL)

    HR: 201 (1st in AL)

    RBI: 929 (1st in AL)

    Walks: 637 (3rd in AL)

So forgive me for liking this Long guy, but offenses don’t just spontaneously appear.

(Can you guys tell I bought Baseball Prospectus last night and I’m addicted?)

gayle You are 100% right. They run a ferry from Weehaken but it takes almost 1 1/2 hours to get to the stadium! Plus they want you there like 30 minutes before departure, and you only get there 30 minutes before the game! So pregame drinks are out!

You can take a bus into disgusting PA (I see that place enough during the week, don’t need to see it on weekends), than take the subway up.

All in all, any options for us poor souls from Jersey would take at least 1 1/2 hours. (more if you miss your bus or train!, since they don’t run regularly on weekends!

Jennifer I live up the road from the Ferry and did it once a few years ago and that was enough for me. I actually used to take the Ferry into work every day but afer 9-11 that was the end of that for me. Everyone realized what a great thing it was they jacked up the rices for the monthly pass and the price for monthly parking. I now park 2 blocks away from my office and it is cheaper then the ferry and ferry parking would be.

    (OT) Rebecca,

My 1st cousin, a huge Yankees fan, got into both Columbia and Cornell for grad school many years back. But only Cornell gave her a big scholarship.

She wrote The Boss outlining the Yanks’ superior winning % when she attended Yankee Stadium, showing him that a small investment in scholarship $ for her would mean a lot of wins for the Yanks.

Sadly, she ended up at Cornell.

But maybe George would have more sympathy for a purist who bleeds pinstripes online? Just a thought.

Also, I haven’t been to nearly enough Yankee games to even have a chance.

I find it funny how down people are getting over a 2-3 record…..a win today is back at .500

Cmon people, as much as I like to win….2008 is merely a practice season for 2009 in my eyes…..Giambi, Mussina, Pavano, Pettitte, Abreu all come off the books this November. The Innings Limits next year will be next to nonexistent for Hughes, Joba & Kennedy….Mark Texeira will be a FA 1st basemen….so no need to trade for him now.

2008 is a filler for me. 2009 is when we start to see the true next generation of the NY Yankees….and it will continue into 2010 when Damon and Matsui are gone. (Pending they arent traded this year)
