Pitching delivered the Yankees to a 2-0 victory against Tampa Bay yesterday.
Joe Girardi was back on the bench. This notebook also has news on Shelley Duncan, the Big G and a visit from Allan Houston, who was told to wait in the hall.
I’m headed to Kansas City late this morning, so blogging could be a little sparse. But thanks to the new-fangled air card I now have, perhaps we’ll sneak in a few posts along the way.

The A’s may be ready to trade Rich Harden.
Despite the pro Mussina sentiment and SJ44’s lordly assumption that he is the regulator of content on this blog, it would be interesting to see what the contributors to the blog think about a trade for Harden.
Who exactly would you be willing to give up? They won’t take Kei Igawa for him you know.
An overpaid, oft-injured, pseudo-star visiting Jason Giambi. Seems appropriate.
The A’s would expect one of the trio for sure.
Moose sure has fun with that whiteboard, doesn’t he? Has he found the wayward freezer yet?
Slick Bomb -
Maybe you should read the articles before you comment. The visit was to Derek Jeter.
Regarding a trade for Harden – it’s everything to do with who they would want in return, isn’t it?
Sure, now that it’s probably Mussina’s last season, he decides to really show his sense of humor.
(I’ve always like Moose.)
I have no desire to regulate content in the blog. I would just like to see fewer morons posting moronic comments in the game thread because its goes against what Pete has worked for in developing this blog.
If you don’t fall into that catagory, why would my request bother you? If you do then I can understand your issue with me.
SJ44
That was quite a statement, either I agree with you and am therefore right or I don’t an am therefore wrong.
My guess , from the inflexible nature of most of your posts (informed as they are) is that you are about 70 years old and getting crankier with each passing year.
Rich Harden needs to show that his health is in fact improved before Cashman considers a deal for him.
Early indications point to Billy Beane looking for arms that Cashman has no interest in parting with nor should he.
The team is not in a sense of urgency by any stretch and acting in haste shows lack of confidence and back to the days of young Yankees figuring they’re eventual trade bait.
vrsce ;
Give it up with the pestering of SJ44 unless you enjoy being on the short end of a stick. He’s a wealth of knowledge and much appreciated.
jeez, where is all this coming from?
and where did we read any indication that Harden was now available? If Beane wants to move him, why not wait it out and let him continue to build in value?
vrsce,
I can’t remember if you’ve ever posted here before. If you have, I can’t remember every reading anything by you that I thought interesting.
If you want to talk about rhetorical devices, posting a fake baseball question when your real intent is to make some kind of moral critique against another poster is very weak.
The point of your post wasn’t rich harden. If it was you just as easily could have asked the question and left it at that.
The point of your post was to take a not so subtle rip at SJ44 – you used the Rich Harden issue to veil that sentiment in something that appeared to be baseball talk.
That’s very, very weak.
vrsce:
“I would just like to see fewer morons posting moronic comments in the game thread because its goes against what Pete has worked for in developing this blog.”
Translation: If you are posting illogical, impulsive or trollish comments, please get out of the way and stop clogging up the game threads. That’ a legit request in a shared space, like asking someone to put out their cigarette, keep their stupid, loud cell phone conversations to themselves or to please stop cursing incessantly while you are trying to watch the game.
It does not mean “agree with me or get out.” It’s just been difficult lately to wade through the fluff and maintain better discussions during a game thread. SJ’s not the only one to post this sentiment or raise the issue. Some have even suggested posting in the thread BEFORE the game thread to avoid this problem.
All SJ added at 9:08 was the equivalent of “if the shoe fits, wear it.” You’ve been around a while, vrsce. I don’t think it’s about you.
Well, you guessed wrong by over 20 years and I’m not the cranky type.
Gotta come up with some new material because what you are bringing to the table now isn’t worth responding to after this comment.
there’s no point in trading for Haren, if the case is that we would have to trade a young pitcher or two in return, then why on earth would we do that? yeah he’s got electric stuff, but we have plenty of guys on the farm with electric stuff. not to mention you know, the whole thing about spending parts of every year on the disabled list. it would be a ridiculous trade if you ask me. We’ve got Wang and Hughes who figure to be solidified parts of our rotation for years to come. In time we’ll see if Kennedy pans out and if Joba stays in the pen or not. Then you’ve got your Alan Horne’s, your Dellin Betances’,etc, etc… This year will be pretty spotty but we figure to have a powerhouse rotation for the upcoming several seasons, i know that not all prospects pan out obviously but it’s the fact that we have so many strong pitching prospects, and likely only 2 spots that need to be filled when we are Pettitte and Mussina-less. No Haren necessary.
Harden* (correction throughout my last post)
“The A’s would expect one of the trio for sure.”
Correction. “You meant The A’s would expect the trio in return.”
Where is all this Harden talk coming from? I havent seen or heard a single thing about it until I came here this morning…
i was thinking, the offense has been dormant to start the year, but we’ve won 3 close and low scoring games due to pitching and defense. that was something unheard if in the previous couple of season. can you imagine if the yanks consistently have well pitched games like the 3 we’ve won already, and the offense wakes up, which it will? we could win 100 games easy that way. yeah, i know it’s just speculation and you could easily say “if this and that happens we could do this” but i mean realistically, they’re gonna hit… keep up this pitching and it’s welcome back to the top of the AL East for the Yanks.
“Where is all this Harden talk coming from? I havent seen or heard a single thing about it until I came here this morning… ”
There is nothing new on harden. Nothing has changed over the past few days and nothing will until he makes more starts.
This was just some poster trying to vent his personal issues indirectly by hiding them behind trade talk behind harden.
There is nothing new on this. The last MLB Trade rumors entry on harden was the one from April 3. Ken Rosenthal has nothing on this, neither does BP or BA.
There is nothing new here at all.
ok, thanks CB for the clarification.
So um…how ’bout those Yankees?
yes, how bout them Yankees? I hope the bats wake up tonight, though it’s been refreshing to see them win low scoring, tight games.
pointless side note: i had a dream recently about the All Star game and according to dream me the AL wins with a walkoff single by…Aaron Hill…dream me thinks Aaron Hill is an All Star…hmm.
Good morning, all.
If Oakland didn’t move Harden in the winter, why would they be ready in the second week of the season? Although, Harden’s proved he can stay healthy for a week.
His stock must be going through the roof.
Seriously, it’s very early in a long season, but there seems to be some parity this season. As of now, there’s no clear cut contender that’s playing exceptional ball now. The playoff players may not reveal themselves to after ASB. Maybe Beane holds off until he knows they’re out of it. They’re still in the thick of things…in Week 2.
IF Moose is totally ineffective AND we have no internal options (there’s a lot of young arms in the system) AND we don’t have to give up too much (any or all of the Big 3) AND Billy Beane turns into a frog, then, yeah, there’s a chance it might happen.
Otherwise, I’ll just enjoy watching our young guys both deal and struggle as they develop.
As long as the 3 vets keep up their end of the bargain and the bats wake up, we’re going to be ok.
And, wow, how’s that bullpen? A couple of rough innings, but, they’re not letting very many guys on base. Who know that on April 7th, the bullpen would be the least of your concerns. Seems that was the #1 gripe over the winter.
I go to school in Charleston and I’ll get to see the Riverdogs home opener tonight. Jesus Montero, Dellin Bettances, and some other notable prospects will be making their debuts (though it is 4 games into the season).
I’m excited to see Jesus play. Interesting little article on Jesus: http://www.charleston.net/news.....dogs36351/
Though I am far from a scout of any kind, I’ll let you know how they play tonight. I hope its exciting enough to miss the televised game tonight on ESPN2.
Aaron Hill very well could be an all-star this year or in the future. He has serious skill.
Brian–I’m with you. It’s nice to see them win low scoring games. How about that–the Yankees have a bullpen!
Deep inside I’m grumbling about LaTroy Hawkins.
How many prospects do we have that where Red Sox fans before the Yankees got them? First Hughes now Montero.
myrtlebeachfan,
I think we need to start calling Christ, “Jeezus”, cuz I’m getting them confused.
How about sitting next to the scouts? I think they sit behind home plate and hold radar guns & clipboards. Maybe SJ has tips on the best way to approach them.
p.s. Please tell us what Jesus looks like without the long beard. I heard he fought tooth & nail to keep it, but that he’d do anything be a Yankee.
Saw this in Buster’s blog this morning – hadn’t read it anywhere else:
Much has been made in New York about Joba Chamberlain’s demonstrative fist-pumping after he struck out Frank Thomas in a big spot last week, about whether Chamberlain is showing up the opposition. Mariano Rivera said on Sunday that he has chatted with Chamberlain about all this, and he predicts that the second-year player will not be quite so demonstrative.
Chamberlain, Rivera said, “didn’t mean anything by what he did. He wasn’t trying to [show up] anybody.” But Rivera, who has always been stoic on the mound, indicated that he and Chamberlain spoke about not giving opponents any unnecessary excuse to dislike him, and to focus more clearly on beating him.
Myrtle Beach fan:
Good deal, give us a report. Charleston has a ton of talent. Keep an eye on Romine, too.

:rolls:
vrsce nothing is new on Rich Harden people assume there’s something but really nothing is new. Beane’s demands are still too much and the Yankees aren’t desperate for a SP who might break down at this point.
————-
When Jesus speaks we listen, great article on him and the James Rowson in PSP said Tabata is a special player who is getting close to majors.
I doubt it gets it done, but Id give them Horne, Igawa and Gardner for Harden anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.
In all honesty, I’d be willing to give them Kennedy in a deal for Harden.
myrtlebeachfan if your going to see Charleston tonight Zach McCallister is pitching, but bring us alot of info on Jesus, DelaRosa, Ab. Almonte, Wady Rufino, Austin Romine especially the SS Carmen Angelini
“I doubt it gets it done, but Id give them Horne, Igawa and Gardner for Harden anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

Horne has more future value then Harden right now because of Harden’s injuries. It makes no sense to make those deals.
Id be willing to take a chance on Harden…the guys upside is greater than any pitcher in the yankees farm system 10 fold….and its not like he’s some 35 year old…he is the same age as Horne.
Hugh he is the biggest injury risk in baseball ! thank god your not my GM
Brandon, you will never get anywhere in life if you dont take risks.
right that makes so much sense
, a little advice don’t say things like this if your argueing your point w/ SJ or whozat
it makes perfect sense, you must be young or just naive if you dont think you have to take risks to get ahead in almost everything…..I dont even see that deal as high risk, high reward…I see it as low risk, high reward. If Harden is healthy all season he will dominate…will Alan Horne? Who knows? And who is to say that Horne will be healthy, didnt he have TJ surgery already? And as I said before, Harden is only 26 years old (I made a mistake he is one year older than Horne), its not like he is in his twilight…he hasnt even reached his prime.
Is trading for Harden a risk? absolutely. But if a package of Gardner, Igawa and Horne gets him over to the Bronx…I’d be willing to bet there isnt a GM is the league that wouldnt make that deal.
By the way…THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PITCHING PROSPECT….which is exaclty what Alan Horne is (kind of). Rich Harden is not a prospect, he is a bonafide ace capable of shutting down any major league line up.
“But if a package of Gardner, Igawa and Horne gets him over to the Bronx…”
Do you expect Beane to accept that? Especially if Harden doesn’t get injured through half a season.
Blargh…no, I do not expect that offer to get Harden which is what Brandon and I are having our disagreement about
“By the way…THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PITCHING PROSPECT….which is exaclty what Alan Horne is (kind of). Rich Harden is not a prospect, he is a bonafide ace capable of shutting down any major league line up.”
ok I tried explaining it to you in a nice calm manner but since you want to take the caplocks as.hole manner we can go either way !
Rich Harden in the last 3 years strained left oblique muscle, muscle strain in his back, sprained ligament in his right elbow, since 2006 he’s played a role in 18 games in the ML, he’s not only a injury risk his is a high percentage injury risk, Alan Horne last season beat out the 30 teams pitching prospects to become AA pitcher of the year, he beat out Lester, Bucholz, you name it. A year removed from TJS and Rich Harden’s value is still not better than Horne’s. Is Harden an ace yes, but is he an ace that has been injured season after season…YES ! and to risk that would be the stupidest thing Cashman would do especially w/ Harden being a FA this offseason and this would require giving up top prospects that can build the A’s team into a power house.
Again Harden is not needed and to take this type of risk would be ridiculous.
“Blargh…no, I do not expect that offer to get Harden which is what Brandon and I are having our disagreement about”
no our disagreement is how you want Harden and dismiss every other factor of why he is on the trade market. Just the fact it would take Marquez,Horne, Gardner and Tabata to acquire him is reason enough to stay away, add also the fact this pitcher has alot in common w/ AJ Burnett and Carl Pavano health wise should be reason enough to steer clear.
I don’t think you will see the Yankees making 3-1 trades for pitchers who are injury prone anymore.
That ship seems to have sailed.
In other news……
Vizcaino placed on the 15 Day DL. Hasn’t been healthy all season.
“Vizcaino placed on the 15 Day DL. Hasn’t been healthy all season.”
sad us stuck w/ Latroy Hawkins who will be better than he has shown.
Why trade for Rich Harden after three games in 40 degree weather????
If Moose still is throwing 85 in the middle of June, and Kennedy has not found the strike zone, call me then.
Even then, there is enough talent to promote from within, so the trade still makes no sense.
I still like what I see so far.
Peter has a new aircard. I suddenly can’t find my aircard. . . It’s all coming together now.
why would we want to trade mussina when 1)his salary is coming off the books after this season and 2) we’ve got a TON of pitchers waiting in the minors.
Brandon,
We’re not stuck with Hawkins. That’s why we signed him to a one-year deal. We have kids ready to pounce. If he and Farnsworth (in final year of his deal) do not distinguish themselves, kids like Melancon, Cox, Sanchez and perhaps, Christian Garcia, McCutchen and, depending on his progress, Kevin Whelan, will replace those two. There’s no way we’re going to sacrifice the season for these FA guys if they can’t help us. We have a plan.
P.S. Agree 100 percent on Hardin.
