You guys are seriously underrating Betemit. He's had a crappy start, but he's above average with the bat for a utility infielder/suber-sub.

I have never understood the dumping miggy for betemit. Miggy was a more than adequate player. If i remember correctly the team began to come together and make their move about the time he filled in at 1 base last year, for about twenty games. The deal that replaced cairo,(a known commodity)with betemit, at best a W.A.G. is one that still makes me shake my head. So far it has been a bad deal for the yankees.

I am very happy that there are no Cairo's, Wilson's and Sojo's on the bench. Those guys were way overrated.

I hear you John, and to be honest it is far too early to make decisions on his future now. I do just worry a it that while his production is great for a SS it isnt great for a corner outfielder or 1st baseman - the two positions he'd be able to play if moved from SS.

I worry as well about the lack of power in some of our young guns. Don't get me wrong, I cant wait to see Tabata et al playing in NY (and although many people seem to be writing off Gardner as a real prospect I think he would create havoc). With some of our young guys needing time to develop their power I don't want to see a creaky old Jeter getting major dollars to play a position that would need much more production. Thats all. Plenty of time to see how things unfold though. I have a funny feeling that by that time Melky might have been traded.

Miguel Cairo, Enrique Wilson, Louis Sojo.... Why do we not have one of these types on our bench?

Those guys in their day (including Cairo last year at 1B) prove that there are good utility guys out there that are actually, UTILITY guys. Cairo last year filled in well and even got hot with the bat for a while. No-one thinking logically is going to say he should have been our everyday first baseman. But, he's what you want out of a utility guy. Someone who can fill in nicely in the short-term when guys get hurt.

I don't know if they thought Betemit could be that type of player or what, but seems like we sacrificed having that type of player for Betemit's bat, which hasn't impressed me as of yet.

the little replacement tire that gets you to the gas station might look funny, but as long as it gets you there, that's all that matters. the big question with the yankees is how long is the little tire needed. hopefully, posada and jeter are short term injuries. we'll find out in the next few days.

sounds interesting with synder. have to keep an eye on it.

How many here can connect the dots or read between the lines. Cashman has said Arod won't play SS unless Jete is out for an extensive period of time. With no pain going on, I'd say the Yankees know that Jete is probably down for a minimum of games.

Smart guy that Cashman. Shuts up the crybabies who are clamoring to have Arod move over.

randy,

I agree that its a great luxury and one of the ironies of the season so far is that if the Tigers had been successful in doing what they were desperately hoping to - trade Inge to dump his salary, they would have been in big trouble with Granderson's injury.

The logjam of corner infielder's is an issue. But as you said coming up with a Chone Figgins type is just a once in a blue moon matter of good fortune.

I don't think that's something you can plan to do - that's more something that just happens.

It's very, very early but the Yankees may have that kind of player (minus figgins speepd) in the minors right now - Justin Synder. He can play SS and CF well defensively and is getting time at 2B.

I do think they're developing him as that super sub type player you're describing.

But that player is in many ways, harder to find than a good starter. It's just a very rare skill set.

But it is an optimal goal. I just think as Yankee fans sometimes we get too caught up in having the optimum or ideal solution for every problem and aren't used to/ willing to accept the down sides that all players have.

kidjock

Not sure it is just the Yankee bats. Maybe it's my perception but there seem to be alot more low scoring games around the league the last week than I remember in the past.

Doreen

LOL. Sometimes this place is like Coffee Talk from SNL. Derek Jeter is neither short nor does he stop. Discuss.

cb-
i totally agree with your analysis of inge. but you have to admit it's a nice option for leyland that he has caught a game, played third base and centerfield so far this year. chone figgins was a super sub too in his early days. i realize having a super sub that good is an atypical situation which was why i said an inge lite would likely be a more realistic goal( or figgins lite).

i just think the logjam at first base makes little sense. age related injuries to this veteran yankee team are going to happen. one player out of that first base mix could be replaced with a super sub who could play skill multiple positions in the infield and outfield.

i realize this is easier said than done, but not a bad goal for cashman to be aiming for.
