Game 9: Yankees at Royals

YANKEES
Damon DH
Cano 2B
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Giambi 1B
Molina C
Cabrera CF
Gonzalez SS
Kennedy RHP

Notes: Jorge Posada has been diagnosed with a shoulder strain according to the KC team doctor and should only miss a few days. It doesn’t look like a DL. He had the MRI sent to Dr. James Andrews for confirmation and the Yankees will have their doctors look at it as well. “It’s good news because it’s not serious,” Posada said. … Gonzalez is in the lineup. There seems to be a chance that Morgan Ensberg will go on the DL with a mysterious knee injury. It may not necessarily be Jeter.

The Yankees won’t say what the move is until after BP.

UPDATE, 6:51 p.m.: Stunning news from Joe Girardi. It seems that Ensberg injured his left ankle on Monday. This was probably news to Ensberg until he was told about it today. The Yankees will announce their move after BP but that’s what it’ll be, Ensberg placed on the 15-day disabled list.

So Jose Molina will catch with Jorge Posada his “hopefully we don’t have to use him” backup.

cavity.jpgUPDATE, 6:56 p.m.: The Journal News was able to obtain a copy of Ensberg’s MRI. As you can see, he has a wrenched ankle. But it could be the breadbasket.

UPDATE, 7:46 p.m.: Morgan Ensberg survived. Shelley Duncan was just optioned to Triple-A Scranton. Why they wait to 15 minutes before the game to reveal that, I have no idea. But that’s the move.

UPDATE, 8:15 p.m.: The bad news keeps coming for the Yankees. Ian Kennedy is injured (we don’t know what it is yet) and Brian Bruney is starting.

UPDATE, 8:23 p.m.: Kennedy is fine. There is rain coming and they didn’t want to waste his start. It’s raining now.

UPDATE, 9:10 p.m.: There seem to have been slowdown issues with the blog since the plug-in to edit comments was installed. So that has been yanked, at least for now. We apologize for the issues but it should be fine now.

  1. Geo

here’s hoping Jeet and Jorge get better

  2. Lauren

How did Jorge hurt his shoulder? does anyone know?

  3. Hughes 5.00

    We are CURSED !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    Sweet Post, Pete ! ;-)

  5. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Why not just try and trade Ensberg for a low-level minor leaguer. I get the feeling he may not see any real playing time, injury or not.

  6. Lauren

    Molina!

  7. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Here’s hoping that the Phantom Knee injury to Ensberg is not so serious :-)

  8. Jimmy 27

Lauren -nothing specific- probably throwing – just one of those things

  9. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

    Let’s get a win tonight

  10. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

How the heck did Ensberg get hurt?

Also, for the record, my birthday’s saturday, not today. Because someone said they were confused :)

  11. Frank Discussion

Anyone else care to issue their predictions on where the strike zone is going to be tonight ? I’m guessing it ends up somewhere in the westbound lanes of I-70 or perhaps in nearby St. Louis.

  12. Jaewon

    Let’s go Yankees!
    *clap, clap, clap clap clap*

Here’s to the health of THE New York team, and here’s to IPK!

  13. mel

    Lauren,

Posada said he felt it in ST. What he’s saying and the doctors are saying is two different stories. Jorge was acting like his career was over. Sometimes he really irritates me with his straight talk. I’d rather have rainbows and butterflies. :)

  14. Lauren

Baltimore and the Royals are running away with their divisons ;)

Who do we root for tonight: Boston or Detroit??

  15. Lauren

    Mel,

    Wow!!

where was Jorge emoting his career was over?!

  16. Jimmy 27

    NEVER ROOT FOR BOSTON.

  17. mel

I hope I’m not offending anyone, but please realize that Alex is not a SS anymore. By his own volition. He knew the deal when he came to the Yankees. He knew the deal when he signed on for another 10 years.

Please leave the poor horse alone.

  18. Christy Canyon

Never root for Boston this early in the season.

  19. Brian from PA

my favorite straight talk from jorge ever is: “i screamed, i thought they were bubbles” in reference to the swarm of bees in sarasota last year. the epitome of a sentence taken out of context…oh jorge, you made it sound like you’re afraid of bubbles!!

but jorge isn’t a doctor. i’ve hurt my shoulder before, and it feels like hell. a strain in your shoulder feels like there is something seriously wrong, so i can see why jorge was so concerned about it.

let’s kick some royal ass tonight…when was the last time the Yankees lost a series to the Royals? eitherway, the Yanks owned Greinke last year so they better continue that trend.

  20. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    Lauren: Detroit, easy.

RULES FOR YANKEE FANS CONCERNING THE RED SOX:

    1) It is NEVER, in ANY circumstance, appropriate to root for the Red Sox to win.

    2) In the rare instance a Boston win would have a direct effect on the Yankees’ chance at a division lead or playoff spot, it is okay to root for the other team to lose, but NOT for Boston to win.

    3) In instances of baseball feats–such as a no-hitter, it is acceptable to root for the player in question, but not for the team as a whole (ie, it’s okay to root for Laptop’s no hitter for one night, but not for the Sox to win that game), and even then it’s not okay to root for the player in question if the team against which this feat would be achieved is the Yankees.

    Any questions?

  21. Mr. Mientkiewicz

You root for the Yankees tonight, the rest will take care of itself.

  22. Westerner99

Betemit is out of options…I believe Ensberg is out of them, also….or he might still have one left but can’t be sent down without his permission due to his MLB service time. The only guy on the bench with options left is Duncan.

  23. 2008 Yankees

Wow….it really says something when Molina is hitting in front of Melky…wow…
I think Posada will play come next Monday, same with Jeter. I know these next 5 games count in the standings but every team is going to go through these kinds of injuries.
Going 3-3 in these 6 games would be a blessing. Arod/Abreu/Matsui will need to carry the offense until. Hopefully they get an unsung hero from the rest of the lineup, but they certainly need Cano and Damon to get started soon.

  24. Jaewon

Lauren: Detroit, but I’d be almost happy if Boston wins too.

  25. Christy Canyon

They need Ensberg around this season in case A-Rod gets hurt. An Ensberg/Betemit platoon would be needed in that case.

  26. Mr. Mientkiewicz

The Yanks got swept by the Royals a couple years ago…in KC.

  27. mel

    Lauren,

I’m sorry, I exaggerated, but he was pretty down after yesterday’s game. Not sure what it was, we’ll see, we’ll see. I think more caution should’ve been used in talking about it until they had more information. But Jorge’s no Jeter in the info deparment.

  28. S.o.S.27

“Who do we root for tonight: Boston or Detroit??”

That should not even be asked. Fan of 2 teams. Yanks and anyone who plays the hated ones.

Can we dl Giambi and put Duncan in for him? He hasnt done anything this year and its just about the time that he pulls something.

  29. Jeff

PHIL HUGHES change in Mechanics and thus loss in velocity???

    http://saberscouting.com/2008/.....l/#more-86

  30. Brian from PA

no reason to root for Boston. to what benefit is it of ours if they win? detroit’s hole gets even deeper? who cares?

Rebecca, good rules for the most part, except personally i don’t root for amazing individual accomplishments if it’s a Red Sox doing it. I was rooting for Buchholz’s no hitter to get broken up.

  31. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

Let’s go Detroit! Get win #1!

  32. Mr. Mientkiewicz

I love you Christy Canyon, but I’ve got to disagree. I don’t even think Ensberg should have made the team.

  33. Jimmy 27

    Rebecca
    Question:
Are you sure it’s ok to root for Laptop’s no hitter?
That does not sit right with me.

Doesn’t Melky bat 9th for the “second leadoff hitter” factor?

  34. S.o.S.27

“ie, it’s okay to root for Laptop’s no hitter for one night, but not for the Sox to win that game.”

Rebecca-Needs a correction. No way i want a red sox getting a no hitter!!

  35. Jeff

PHIL HUGHES change in Mechanics and thus loss in velocity???

    http://saberscouting.com/2008/.....l/#more-86

  36. Christy Canyon

What can I say, I like Ensberg :)

Just a hunch I suppose, but I think he is pretty good. And even though Betemit pretends to be a switch-hitter, he is only a good hitter from one side of the plate. And Ensberg complements that well because he mashes from Betemit’s weak side.

  37. Jimmy 27

Mr Chips – How was class?

  38. Brian from PA

Ensberg would be pretty useful at 3rd in the event Alex goes down. let’s hope that doesn’t happen though *knocks on wood for like the 40th time today* but then again Betemit is also a decent third basemen. or a prospect like Cody Ransom could be called up. I think we’re good, defensively anyway, if A Rod goes down.

  39. Brian from PA

    Jimmy 27

Class was alright, thanks. Got my test back, scored a 92%. After that we spoke spanish a lot. (the class is Spanish 202)

  40. Doreen

I think it’s pretty easy to see why Posada was particular distressed after yesterday’s game. He couldn’t throw. And they lost. And he thought he was getting better.

I don’t know about anyone else out there, but I often overreact in the moment. :)

  41. Lauren

Bill Buckner cried after throwing out yesterday’s first pitch.

I hate to say it, but here goes: THERE’S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!!

  42. Jimmy 27

How do you say “the machine stole my chips” en Espanol?

  43. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

I think Ensberg may have more value as a trading chip than as a player on this year’s squad, but let’s see how the season plays out.

  44. Matt Waters

Seems Mr. Ensberg has been hit with a severe case of rosteritis.

  45. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Lauren–8 games in is not “running away with the division.” You NEVER root for Boston except, perhaps, in the rare circumstance that both teams have made the playoffs and a Boston win over another playoff-bound team will result in home field advantage for the yankees in the first round. Only exception.

2008 Yankees–Melky’s hitting 9th for his speed in front of Damon. It’s not a knock on his bat.

  46. Buddy Biancalana

    mel-

Ready for Boom Dizzle vs Melo & AI on National TV tomorrow night? Should be a good one.

  47. Brian from PA

Bill Buckner was just trying to make a story with his fake tears. if he was so hurt by the aftermath of his botched play, then he wouldn’t have autographed thousands of pictures of that play along with mookie wilson. the dude probably made more money off that play than he did in his career before that.

  48. Brian from PA

    Jimmy 27

    Yo no se.

  49. S.o.S.27

I have to agree with Christy. Betimet sucks and atleast with Ensburg, he has a track record that shows he succeeded in the bigs. Its worth the risk.

    Brian,
I dont think Ransom is a prospect. If im not mistaken he’s been in the league for awhile. But i would rather have him in there than Wilson.
Spanish word that might mean fries or chips. Cant remember. Papas fritas.

  50. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

I feel a lot better! Phew!! Hopefully Andrews confirms the KC DR diagnosis.

  51. Lauren

    Elizabeth-

My poor attempt at sarcasm; sarcastic smiley face notwithstanding.

  52. Steph

I’m glad that Posada might only be out for a few days and should be alright…hope the diagnosis for Jeter comes up good as well. I wonder where Ensberg got the knee injury…well, if he goes on the DL, at least it’s a back-up and not a full-time player. But I hope he’s alright.
Jorge hurt his shoulder on April 1 (Opening Night) when he made an awkward throw to second to try to throw out a runner.

  53. S.o.S.27

“How do you say “the machine stole my chips” en Espanol?”

Not sure but i do know how to say “dame mi pinchi dinero”.

  54. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Ensberg could be useful, you’re right, but holding onto a guy in the event ARod goes down just doesn’t make sense to me. Look, if ARod goes down no one is going to replace his production. Then to have Ensberg try and learn firstbase on the job…when is Cashman going to learn. Get a real firstbaseman, say someone like…me.

I’ll never understand why the Yanks throw their money away like they do. 1.75 mil for Ensberg. The guy has no position on this team.

You need good defensive subs and guys with speed on this bench. Like it’s been said before, you’re not going to pinch hit for anyone in this line-up.

  55. Jimmy 27

La machina ________ mi papas fritas!

    are we close?

  56. Brian from PA

    SoS

Sorry, i guess i just thought the word “prospect” took less time to type than “minor leaguer”.

papas fritas means french fries but it may be suitable for potato chips as well. the thing is i couldn’t remember the word for “stole” so i just decided to go with “yo no se” (i dont know)

  57. S.o.S.27

    stole = robaron(i think)

I do miss your glove Mr. Mienkuoulokjljlich. I agree. We should have resigned him. Good luck charm for arod.

  58. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

La vendedora automática robó mis patatas fritas

  59. Brian from PA

    Jimmy 27

i believe you have it, besides the blank. the only correction i’d make is that it would be “mis” papas fritas, not “mi”. if the noun is plural so is the pronoun.

  60. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

    stole = robar, s.o.s.

  61. Brian from PA

    Elizabeth is the winner!

    Her prize?

    the chips!

except the police will confiscate them, as they are exhibit A.

  62. Fran

Pete – I read that SWB called up a catcher this afternoon. Is Chad Moeller in KC? Is there another roster move to be made?

  63. S.o.S.27

    Elizabeth,
Thank you. To think i was born in south america and cant get a sentence right. Disgraceful i tell ya.

  64. Jeff NJ

Tonight is Ian’s night. The first start, Yankee stadium jitters are gone. Look for him to hand the ball to Joba directly tonight.

  65. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Brian–I’ll gladly give them up for the sake of forensics.

  66. Jimmy 27

Gracias – might as well learn something while we’re here

    Brian what was their VORC?

  67. Sterling Steiner

I never want to see a guy go down, but in this case, I sure hope it’s Ensberg and not Jeter.

  68. Lauren

    S.o.S.27-

Well, Bush was born in the United States and he mangles the language, every day.

  69. S.o.S.27

    Hows the weather in k.c.?

  70. Yankees Ben

I would bat Melky 2nd Cano 6th Gimbi, Molina, Gonzo.

  71. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Thanks S.o.S.27. I miss being a member. Don’t tell the Pirates I’m blogging…we’ll be playing shortly.

They really should have resigned me though. I should be the everyday first baseman and the Big G should be a DH or bat off the bench.

    Your bench should be:

    Molina
    Duncan
    Giambi
    Gonzalez/Ransom
    Gardner/Damon

  72. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

S.O.S.—”Robaron” is the past perfect form of the verb. “Robar” is the infinitive.

  73. Doreen

    Fran -

There is a Chris Stewart listed on SWB roster, catcher, no number. I didn’t notice if he was there earlier.

  74. S.o.S.27

“laura-Well, Bush was born in the United States and he can’t get a sentence right, either.”

What was that word he uses. Nukiler.
    Thanks, I feel better now.

  75. Doreen

And Chad Moeller is still on SWB roster, too.

  76. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Fran–SWB gets to replace Gonzalez with someone now; maybe a C was their choice.

  77. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Hablo español, pero, no lo hablo bien :)

  78. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Hey here’s what I’m thinkning. They need to pry me from the Pirates along with Marte in some not-so-blockbuster deal. Send Ensberg over her for me.

Posada may not land on DL after all
by anaconda on Apr 9, 2008 6:11 PM EDT in News

Ed Price of the Ledger has the latest:

Jorge Posada said his MRI today showed a strained right shoulder and he estimated he can return in 3-4 days.

Posada said he is relieved because he feared he would need surgery.

Mark Feinsand of the Daily News was just on Michael Kay’s radio show and reported that Morgan Ensberg has an issue with his knee and he could be the headed to the DL instead of Derek Jeter.

Obviously, we’ll know a lot more about all of these issues when Girardi talks to the media before the game.

[Note by anaconda, 04/09/08 6:22 PM EDT ]

Pete Abe confirms mysterious knee injury to Ensberg and adds that Posada’s MRI will be sent to famed uber-surgeon Dr. James Andrews for confirmation on the condition of his ailing shoulder.

  80. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

    Rebecca–Hablo espanol un poco, tambien.

  81. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Yo tengo un lapiz, me lapiz es amarillo.

  82. Fran

Doreen and Elizabeth – Thanks for the information. When I saw that SWB called up a catcher I naturally assumed.

  83. Louise

Hell im rooting for Boston tonight.. I wanna see Det keep losing.. If that makes me a fake yankee fan then so be it..

  84. S.o.S.27

Doug above all was a good clubhouse guy. I like your bench but as I stated earlier. We seem to win games when Giambi is out. He hasnt done crap this year and dl is calling his name. Duncan needs his chance. Pavano needs a friend, go to him G. Gardner is batting 364 early on with a dinger. I hope he can make it up here sometime this year.

  85. Brian from PA

ok im out ill be back at gametime maybe

  86. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Louise = fake Yankee fan …. *So BE it!*

“Hey here’s what I’m thinkning. They need to pry me from the Pirates along with Marte in some not-so-blockbuster deal. Send Ensberg over her for me.”

Hell you can have Hawkins,Betimet,Henn,Farnworthless,Bruney and Ramirez for those two.

  89. Steph

Thank God Posada doesn’t need shoulder surgery.
Pavano’s got Sanchez and Brackman on the DL with him. Oh…wait. They’re actually working to…I dunno…help the club sometime in the future. Unlike the walking disaster himself.

  90. DurhamYankee

papas fritas are french fries, unless you are from England I assume you are trying to say papitas which means chips. La machina de vendedora se robo mis papitas

Moeller was not scheduled to play this game.

  92. Louise

So a yankee fan never cheers for Boston to win.. So therefor a scenario of.. Boston plays Minnesota to make up for a rainout the day after the regular season ends…

The Yankees need Boston to win, to make the wild card.. so therefore by a lot of thought processes on this blog.. we have to root for Minnesota even if it means the Yankees miss the playoffs….

Detroit to me is a bigger threat to the Yankees this year, because I honestly feel we will be the wild card this year. So there the more Detroit loses the better chance of the wild card coming from the East…

Perhaps I am not the fake yankee fan, and people like Don Vito aren’t smart enough to look at things rationally.

  93. Yazman

Ensberg tweaked his knee sliding down the bench to make room for Jeter. I’m guessing once Jeter’s able to come off the bench, Ensberg’s reverse movement up the bench should tweak his knee back the other way, and he’ll be fine.

  94. panic

Who is our backup/emergency catcher tonight?!!!

  95. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Now you’re talking. Send over Betemit(cause I’ve definitely got the better-mit), Henn, Ensberg, Farnsworth and Ramirez…of course there’s that whole money thing with those guys. My current employer doesn’t have the deepest pockets…oh games starting gotta go. Thanks.

  96. S.o.S.27

    Rhapsody,
    Never knew that. Thanks
How do New Yorkers pronounce it?

  97. DurhamYankee

Panic: Ensberg, im fine with that

  98. Lauren

    Rhapsody in Blue-

Did Ike ever say, “They based some of their decisions on the word people who have trained to disassemble, that means not tell the truth.”

  99. DurhamYankee

Panic: Ensberg, I’m fine with that

  100. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Louise, in that situation you root for Minnesota to lose, not the Red Sox to win ;)

  101. Don Vito A. Bellamo

Louise, I was joking. Chill….relax…..calm…think happy thoughts….The only way we root for Boston to win, is if in the process, they sustain daily injuries that completely tank their season… ;-)
    .
Remember, breath slowly, go to your happy place….OHM…OHM…OHM !

  102. Yazman

And happy birthday Rebecca, and kudos, defense matters!

  103. Steph

That’s a good question. Betemit would probably have to be the back-up or emergency tonight because of Ensberg’s injury and Posada being down for a couple days. Or Shelley. He could be the iron giant behind home.

  104. Sterling Steiner

Is this one of those fake injuries?

  105. MJL

    Haha, that’s great Pete.

  106. Mr. Mientkiewicz

One last thing…I’m healthy. See ya.

  107. Steph

    DuhramYankee: Ensberg’s injured…

  108. Doreen

    Yazman -

  109. panic

Durham, ensberg is now on the dl!!

  110. S.o.S.27

    Louise,
Why are you worried about Detroit? They arent in our division and we as Yankees shouldnt ever think of getting the wild card. Last year was an abotation. Only Sox fans start the season thinking wild card. Plus Detroit has no pitching besides Verlander. Not to worry. They wont be their in the end. Allways go against boston unless it helps us.So now will you go for the cats?

  111. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

    LOL Peter

  112. S.o.S.27

    “aboration”

  113. Steph

I’m so glad it’s not Jeter or Posada that has to go on the DL!
    Get well soon, Ensberg.

    Note to Girardi.

  118. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Louise–you don’t play for the wild card. You play for the division.

  119. Doreen

Well, you know, if Ensberg did have a sore ankle before today, it may explain why he hasn’t been used, right?

  120. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Ah, the fakety fake DL stint. Classic. ;)

  121. DurhamYankee

Thats pretty funny that teams can get away with stuff like that, I LOVE it! I guess Betemit would have to catch bc Shelly may charge at someone running at him down the 3rd base line.

Nice to see some creative roster plays. That’s a good sign Jeter is not injured more than reported. He really had me worried not using his ‘I’m fine line’ like he usually does.

Now he’s moved to the ‘It’s not that bad’ line.

I sware I think if he had a broken arm, he would be out there with a cast on if they’d let him. :)

  131. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

    LET’S GO DEVILS!

    Yeah, you heard right!

    JERSEY PRIDE ALL THE WAY!

  132. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

    LOL. :)

  133. Yankees Ben

Here is my question if Bettemit can’t play SS for a few days why is he on the team?
Although I like him on first in limited action, We have 4 First Baseman. Although I think Ensberg is only good on 3rd, so why is here? I guess thats why he got injured.

  134. Louise

    Elizabeth -

Im sure the Orioles are playing for the division too.. but in reality they won’t win it…

The Yankees will be in trouble come August when all the IP limitation on their pitchers come to fruition.. So I don’t think we have the ability to win the division this year…

I want to win the division, but I dont think its realistic this season.

  135. Doreen

    Elizabeth -

You are correct! Aberration it is! (I actually checked the dictionary, but my contacts are blurring up on me and I didn’t see the second “r” which I thought was how you spelled it, but because of the blurry eyes, well, whatever — no excuses!)

Ensberg with an injured breadbasket…LMAO…damn, us >30 year olds LOVED that game…great blog Pete

  137. Steph

YanksAngel-if you broke both of Jeter’s legs and he was in a wheelchair, I’m sure he’d insist on getting out there in one of those motorized scooters to help him move to the left and right quicker. It just might be hard to scoop the ball and get off a throw…put a catapult on it?

  138. mel

Over/under on number of runs for Bonderman in the first? I’m rooting for the Tigers, but his first inning ERA is bloated.

  139. Andrea

Why couldn’t Betemit “hurt his ankle”?

  140. Irabu's Son

And that’s why we love him so much!!

I hope he’s ready for the Boston series, remember his blast off Shilling last year :)

  142. Don Vito A. Bellamo

OK, that does it,,,since Louise thinks that it is not realistic that we can win the division….I label her TROLL….now everyone stick their fingers in their ears and say ” booga booga booga ” !!!!

  143. back bench

Does anyone know if AG can bunt?

  144. Steph

Definitely. Hey…that motorized scooter WOULD come in handy trying to break up a DP. Put a little more horsepower in it and have him take a trip around the bases.
I want Jeter back as soon as possible, but I want him to be as healthy as he can be. I don’t want to see him go down on the DL at some point in the middle of the year when it’ll be more critical to the team.

  145. Yanksgal07

That hit my funny bone PETE….I’m still chuckling. I use to love that game too..

Good Luck to Ike tonight. Hope the guys remember what
good hitters they are since they seem to have forgotten at the moment …

    Go Yankees 2008 !!!

  146. Steph

I think the Yanks had him lay down a bunt or two last year. He should be able to if he’s light in the bat and a lower-order hitter.

  147. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

Louise–but if you play for the division, doesn’t the wild card just fall into place?

Besides, the innings limits aren’t as bad as some made it out to be. IPK will have an innings limit around 195, Hughes around 165-170, and Joba around 135.

  148. myrtlebeachfan

I don’t know why nobody has mentioned it, but Ensberg’s injury is clearly fake. The Yankees need Ensberg to fake an injury in order to have Gonzalez come up without losing Jeter for the 15 days. That way, we will have Jeter back in 3-4 games with Gonzalez still on the bench as a PR and what not until we are forced to sent Gonzo back down for Ensberg.

It’s clear, at least to me.

  149. Louise

Well IPK won’t be an issue, I don’t see him sticking with the club… He doesn’t really have big league stuff.

  150. Drive 4-5

At last! As I’ve been saying in my previous posts Ensburg’s place on the roster doesnt make sense. We already have two 3rd basemen and 3 first basemen on the roster. He’s too slow to use as a pinch runner. We’ve now seen what Cashman’s plan was for him all along.

Get well soon Morgan! We might need ya back on the DL as soon as you get off it!

  151. LathamJoe

Ensberg has the same injury that Sean Henn has. Its called
    “Out-of-Options-itis”

    Jeff:
Interesting article about Hughes’ loss of velocity. Somehow I can’t help but believe that the hamstring injury still has an effect on his driving off the mound, rather than a change in his mechanics. Maybe its his tentativeness from the injury, maybe the hamstring is still weakened, but somehow it seems to be linked to his leg drive.

  155. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

I think we all know Ensberg’s move is a result of Creativerostermovitis.

What I have to wonder is if the announcers on TV will play along…

  156. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Whew. Not in the line-up tonight. Perhaps a trade is on the horizon. I’ll be checking in from the clubhouse between innings.

What you do is pretend you need a bathroom break and then you check your emails and stuff. Damon did it all the time last year.

Get my number 11 ready, I sense a comeback.

  157. pat

They just showed a quote from A-Rod on the Yankee BP show from last night. It said something about it’s tough having 2, 3 or 4 guys hurting right now. I guess Jeter, Jorge and Giambi are the 3, which would leave Ensberg to be the 4th. How did the writers not pick up on that?

  158. Elizabeth--Melky in CF 08 and Beyond

I don’t know why nobody has mentioned it, but Ensberg’s injury is clearly fake. The Yankees need Ensberg to fake an injury in order to have Gonzalez come up without losing Jeter for the 15 days. I hope the news about Jorge calms anyone who was worried.

How can anyone report with a straight face that Morgan is hurt.

Yes pregame doesn’t have a roster move yet.

Actually, I’m not relaxed about Posada until Dr. Andrews sees the MRI results. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ordered another set (series?).

  165. Steph

Have the Yanks fitted Ensberg with a pair of crutches and everything yet?

  166. cw

Cashman to Ensberg: “How’s your ankle”?

    Ensberg: “Fine, why”?

Cashman: “We may have to DFA you”.

Ensberg: (grabbing his ankle) “Its KILLING ME”.

Cashman: “Ok. Its the DL for you”.

Ensberg: “I’m no doctor but, I think I will be ready to go in 15 days”.

Girardi: best case scenario for Jeter to come back is Friday.

He didn’t look like someone who was playing poker when he said it. Jeter also doesn’t sound like someone getting ready to go on the DL!

Girardi held a brief team meeting to emphasize the need to play the game right. (Too many errors in games.)

  176. CB

It’s funny, but last time at this year there were many people killing Cashman for the Randy Johnson trade.

How does it look now? They got a decent year from Viz when they were desperate for relief help and they’re getting the 45 th pick in the draft for losing him to the Rockies.

Ohlendorf is on the team and pitching well. And now Gonzalez is getting the call to fill in for Jeter.

Not a bad trade for a 40+ pitcher who was unhappy, wanted a contract extension and can’t stay healthy.

  177. ANSKY

Are you sure that isn’t Igawa’s MRI? Look at those abs … he came to spring training in that kind of shape! Look at the hair too – all you need is dark shades and it’s him!

Well it looks like the Yankees are just being the Yankees…. overly cautious with injuries. I disagree with some previous posts stating that the Yankees always downplay injuries that are more serious. I think they are purposefully vague about injuries, and they never rush guys back.

2 perfect examples are Jeter and Posada. Jorge never had any pain in his shoulder, he just lacked strength there. So they pull him out, get an MRI, and he’s out a few games. No big deal.

Obviously if Jeter was more seriously hurt, he would have been on the DL, not Ensberg. That’s funny how they most likely just made up a knee injury for the guy. I’d be pissed. They had no choice but to bring up AG, even if its only for a few games. Did you guys see Betemit last night? Ouch.

Anyway, I’ll bet Jeter is back by next week also. Its April and its cold. There is no need to rush anything.

  181. mel

I wasn’t here for the Sheff trade but I would have taken a bag of balls for him because his malcontent attitude and telling the team how to play totally outweighed what he was bringing in terms of production.

I still blame him for killing us in the first round of the postseason where he mouthed off to the press that he should be playing and saint joe put him in the lineup and he didn’t do jack schlit. Good freakin riddance to him!

It took them 15 min before game time because they were waiting for Yogi to do the coin flip.

Our young pitchers walk people and it’s a different story.

  212. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

Sending Shelley down is the smartest move. If either Jorge or Jeter need to go down, they could bring Shelley back up. If they dl’ed Morgan and needed to dl either Jorge or Jeter they couldn’t bring Morgan back till after the 15 days.

  213. trisha - count on me for an alternate route

durham Remy and Orsillo are really funny and play well off each other. As much as I hate being stuck with NESN when Yank games are on, I will say that Remy is as about objective a sportscaster as you’re going to get. He is the opposite of a homer and he will always admit it if there are bad calls, no matter which way they go.

  214. ANSKY

  279. CaptainsCorner

This game is 1 of the main reasons why this team needs a long man. The bullpen is going to be absolutely dead by the end of the week. Kennedy 2 innings last week, Hughes 3 innings yesterday. How smart are the Yanks?? Kennedy didn’t start because of the rain???

  280. Rudy

    Girardi is a genius.

  281. Richard

Listening to the WCBS live broadcast and they reported that a really bad weather front is looming and Girardi didn’t want to start Kennedy if the weather suddenly turned bad after he’d only pitched a few innings.

  282. Rob

Yay, Girardi learned from his errant ways in marlin land, our pitchers will survive next season too.

  283. jay destro

ok to quote Rebecca “torre would not have done this”

    yup.

  284. Fran

Interesting move by Girardi. Doesn’t want to waste Kennedy’s start to a rain delay or rain out. If there is a delay Kennedy can come in after. And it is now raining in KC.

  285. Steph

    And it’s pouring.

  286. NSK

Joe Girardi is a genius! Give Kennedy some rest, don’t make him overwork, and everything is good. Hopefully Bruney will be okay for 3 or 4 innings.

  287. DJ

    frits,

You came in last place. But you get the gold medal for most thorough report. :D

  288. RB

regarding holding IPK back….I really like how Girardi is thinking, why put the kid out there for an inning or two and then have the game get cancelled

  289. mel

    SA,

The blog crashed with news of IPK being scratched!

  290. Sterling Steiner

This is a move that can either be really, really smart, or come back and bite Girardi in the behind.

  292. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

DJ it is smart! We don’t have any off days. IF they start Ian and the game gets delayed for 1 1/2 after 2 innings, they lose Ian. And they won’t be able to use him for 5 days.

  293. Boston Dave

no prob Durham. As trisha said, the BoSox announcers are pretty good.

let Grienke throw 30 pitches and then let him get yanked for the rain.

smart move by the Yanks to start Bruney.

  294. sevrox

Kennedy is being held out of this start because he just got dealt to Oakland for Rich Harden.

    You heard it here first.

  295. Rishi

had to check in when I saw that Bruney was starting – thanks for the updates guys…i don’t think we could handle any more :) so i’m just wondering how Ensberg’s ankle cleared up so quickly ;)

  296. Steph

I’m so glad Kennedy isn’t injured…and if there’s a rain delay, it’s going to be a smart move because he can come in after it’s dry.

  297. NSK

CaptainsCorner, I totally agree with you. But who would you bring up and send down? My pick: bring up Rasner, send down Hawkins.

  298. DJ

I love the way Pete’s post looks:

“They’re putting Ensberg on the DL with an ankle injury.”
“Ensberg is fine, Shelley is being optioned.”
“Kennedy is hurt and Bruney is starting.”
“Kennedy is fine and will start as soon as it stops raining.”

The Yankees are confusing us all. :)

  299. Rob

Great idea by girardi. It is clearly only going to get worse.

  300. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

Girardi is a genius. Just as Singleton said that it started pouring. But if they never stop the game and just play threw the rain then the move really didn’t do anything.

  310. mel

I try not to complain too much about swing early in the count. I see value in doing that against good pitchers who pound the strike zone, but an 8 pitch inning against a guy who has thrown 11 strikes:9 balls through 2IP?!?!?

  311. trisha - count on me for an alternate route

WOW. MLB is doing something new this season! It seems that I will always be getting the YES feed. DirectTV is giving me 4 separate options, 2 HD and 2 regular. The first one I put on was the Royals feed, the 2nd is the YES feed. They never gave that option before and lots of times I was stuck with the opposition team’s feed! Maybe I won’t be screwed when it’s the Sux-Yanks games!!!!

  325. anti-mussina

cause the players are being paid millions to play. oooh water is so scary! just play!

  326. Jeff NJ

Whoa just realized this the Yankees only trip into KC this year. A Rainout could result in one of those fly in days during a mutual day off.

  327. Steph

The Yanks needed someone to play short, so they brought up Gonzalez. Originally, Ensberg was going to hurt his ankle, but if A-Rod needs a day off because his wife goes into labour, he’ll probably play there. The Yanks have plenty of first basemen right now. Jeter should be back for a start at some point in Boston.
Seriously, they should put a rain delay on now. The weather looks terrible.

  328. jdo7

  331. melkyy28

  332. Steph

The Royals announcers are questioning why they didn’t start Joba in this weather? If they weren’t going to start Kennedy, you bet your life they wouldn’t start Joba!

  333. Rudy

Bruney is dominating so far this year. WOW. He’s by far the best reliever after Joba.

  334. RosterRooster

  345. V

    Wow, 4 Ks through 2.

  346. chaossolver

lol might have caught lightning in a bottle… making bruney a starter is an intriguing option, might be a better idea than to take JOba out of the eighth.

  347. Dee

    Wow, go Bruney!

It’s pouring and still he seems to care about every pitch, taking the time to talk over pitches with Molina instead of rushing to get off the mound and out of the rain. I know he’s paid good money and this is his job, but still, nice to see. Awesome K’s.

Did I just write a whole paragraph in praise of Brian Bruney?? I need my head examined:-)

  348. ANSKY

Melkyy28 – My guess is, if they don’t have to DL Jeter they can bring him back in a few days, or early next week if he’s ready. If they don’t DL him, someone has to go down so they can bring up Gonzo, who’s a more suitable SS than Betemit, at least with the glove. There are a few guys who can play 1st on the bench – Betemit, Ensberg, Giambi, Shelley – then one of them can go down. If Jeter goes DL, he can’t come back for 15 days from the time he goes on the list so they’re locked into being w/o him for that long. This way, whenever Jeter gets better sooner, they can send Gonzo down and bring Shelley back. More flexibility. Shelley probably has options too.

  349. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

  354. Steph

Bruney has looked fantastic so far this year. If he could just get out of those 3-ball counts, it would be perfect. But I’ll take a season of exactly what he’s doing now.

  372. Steph

  373. SJ44

Its just more of the Bud Selig led nonsense of MLBH.

You create a schedule that has the Yankees playing in KC one time this year and its in April.

Meaning, absent a monsoon, they will play this game in rotten weather.

    Makes no sense at all.

Brian Bruney is really throwing the ball great this season. Not good, great.

He looks like a different pitcher.

If he can pitch like this all season, its really going to help out the bullpen. He’s becoming a weapon for Girardi now.

  374. Butch Wynegar

I know Pete loves the Patriots, but has he ever said who his favorite baseball team was? Is it the Red Sox?

Who was scheduled to start tomorrow? Why not two starters?

  380. keith

If it doesn’t get rained out you’ll see Kennedy later.

  381. Jeff NJ

Rain is letting up. Only downside I can think of with this strategy is that it’s possible some of the players are playing the game as if it is going to be rained out. We’re going to need to get Ian out there soon.

  382. SDJohn

The bigger problem other than not hitting with RISP, we don’t even make productive outs. Melky can’t shorten his swing and hit a groundball to the right side there? It’s not like Greinke was busting him in with all those pitches, Melky (and all the other Yankees) never change there approach at the plate to make productive outs. Giambi gets up with runners on 3rd all the time, does he cut down his swing to drive in the run? Nope, he swings just like always, trying to pull the ball into the seats. It’s been on ongoing theme for 3-4 years. I was really hoping that would change with Girardi, but it’s still the same. Frustrating to watch other teams always get runners around the bases, and watch thy Yanks consistently leave leadoff doubles on second the entire inning.

  383. Yewnork

Am i the only person who is afraid of Billy Traber’s nose?

  388. Russell W

Great news on Posada… you are killing me Pete… first Ensberg is getting demoted then Kennedy is injured?

Girardi is awesome. Sees the rain and knows his bullpen has been great. Figures 5 innings from his bullpen and a Yankee lead + game called = win. What he didn’t count on was the Yankees scoring ZERO runs!

  399. SDJohn

    Rebecca,

It may be in a downpour tonight, but this has bee ongoing for 3-4 years. And yes I have hit in a downpour, you should actually shorten your stride even more and have more bat control.

  400. Joe Mama

Cano is really bothered by cold weather, last year he also got off to a slow start.

  401. ANSKY

Anti – You can’t play this game in the rain, especially in a downpour. That ball gets slick (and heavier) and when guys can’t grip it either when throwing or catching, it gets real dangerous. Like, guys can get seriously hospitalized or worse. Slick bats are a bad thing too. These guys are not wearing all the protection NFL players play with.

  402. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

  446. Steph

The infield and the outfield look miserable. They are both flooded. You could see it when Abreu slid to try to catch the hit by Gordon…and you could obviously see the infield dirt is mud and saturated by water.

That infield is insane. Standing water everywhere. Girardi should argue for a stopage after this inning or pull his team off the field til they add some dry dirt to the field.

  458. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

Can someone from the yankees please score a run.

  459. Rob

  460. Dee

Jennifer, why, I’m not wishing on anyone to get injured of course. But if I had to choose one in a hypothetical, I’d pick Jorge b/c I have the most confidence in his backup vs backup players in other positions.

    Why who would you pick?

  461. Jeff NJ

Alberto can hit! Can we keep him Cash?

  462. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

So I thought this Gonzalez kid wasn’t supposed to be able to hit.

  463. Russell W

Switch spots in the order between Giambi and Gonzalez. Gonzalez now has as many hits as Giambi.

  464. DJ

Ok, so do we have a penchant for 2-out hits with nobody on … or do their pitchers just relax too much?

tim get a clue. Apparently no one did their research.

UPDATE, 5:50 p.m.: Still no official move, but Gonzalez is starting at shortstop tonight. Girardi said Morgan Ensberg is dealing with an ankle injury, and he’s the likely candidate to land on the disabled list in the next hour.

Also, Posada had an MRI exam which revealed a strained shoulder. He thinks he’ll be out 3-4 days, but he can still DH or pinch hit, and he’s still the Yankees’ backup catcher should anything happen to Jose Molina.

UPDATE, 6:46 pm CT: Well, so much for that. The Yankees didn’t place Ensberg on the DL. Instead, they optioned Shelley Duncan down to Triple-A to make room for Gonzalez.

    From daily news blog

There’s been no official word on the roster move. Girardi said that Morgan Ensberg had done something to his ankle on Monday when he landed on the bag funny. So I guess Ensberg could be headed to the DL.

Really, how can MLB justify playing a game in this mess.

You don’t even see college teams play with an infield that looks like this.

What an embarrassment for the sport.

Its funny, the Yankees have played 9 games this year and they haven’t played a single game in baseball weather.

Can’t remember the last time that happened.

  481. joe

Damon is absolutely useless. Strikes out once again. Unbelievable.

  482. AlbanyYankee

Johnny Damon is a double agent, just like Bellhorn, Embree and Mike Myers. It is time for him to go. Bring up Gardner, put him in center and put Melky in left. Even if Gardner is a AAAA-level talent, he’ll go out there and try. Damon is the pits.

  483. Jeff NJ

In fairness SJ44, I was at the game on Saturday. It was 64 and sunny. If that’s not baseball weather I don’t know what is. Of course they lost anyway.

It truly stinks that they Yankees may lose this game 1-0 after 5 soggy innings. But, they had scoring opportunities and did nothing with them.

I have been patient but it seems to me, again, even in this weather, they’re swinging for the fences when a single would do the job.

Also, why didn’t the Yankees bunt on this field?

Now, if they call this game, if Kennedy has warmed up, can he be used tomorrow?

  555. Tim

Couldn’t have said it better, Damon and Giambi are done, the Yanks have a better Leadoff player in Gardner waiting in the wings, the problem is that they just sent down their 1B, otherwise no is better than Giambi and that is all on Cashman.

Can we lay off the knee jerk reactions? Obviously Farnsworth isn’t the most popular person on this blog, but to expect perfection is a recipe for disappointment. He’s pitching in his second inning (for the first time since before Torre was his manager) in less than ideal conditions. The bats are disheartening (specifically Damon and Giambi), but you can’t live and die with every AB.

  592. Neil

I thought Joe Torre managed the Dodgers.

  593. Steph

Wow…seriously? They’re still going to play another inning?

  594. Doreen

Two runs wouldn’t normally be a horrible deficit, but 9 games into the season, this team hasn’t hit. Weather or no weather. Other teams do not seem to be quite so upset by the weather.

  595. MMF

Uhhh, Kyle Farnsworth has been bad since day one. His crappiness is nothing new.

    Shot out by Greinke.

  596. Yankee Fan in Boston

I think tonight is a great illustration of just how poor a pitcher Farnsworth is. They basically march the bullpen out there exhibition style, and everyone gets the job done but Farnsworth. Pressed for who a fan would pick to “spit the bit” in this situation, the overwhelming majority would’ve said “Farnsworth.” He is a net loss on this team. Every other reliever held the Royals in check, but Farnsworth simply could not throw strikes, and gave the Royals near unlimited chances to score again.

Tonight should be a lesson learned for Girardi and Cashman. I doubt it will.

  597. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

All right. Let’s not waste this.

  599. mel

    Farnsworth,

Dude. I backed you up here. You making me look bad.

Look, can’t do much about that leadoff HR. But with 2 outs, you don’t walk someone when you have a man on first. See that pushes him into scoring position.

Throw strikes and take a chance. Chances are low that the guy at first will score on a base hit.

KC better have the cajones to play this one out. They were tough all day through the first 5 innings.

  600. miggs

Ok everyone, I can’t believe no one knows this.

The game is obviously not over.

    They will not “call it”

MLB passed a rule a few years ago, all games delayed by rain will be completed. So whether its today, tomorrow, or Saptember 4th, this game will be completed. 9 innings. Guaranteed.

There are no more rain-shortened games. Only rain delayed. Let them call it. Who cares? It’ll just be finished at a later date.

What seems to have backfired is holding Kennedy out. There was no rain delay, and now the most he can pitch is 4 innings. Strategy did not work.

Nice hit Cano.. let’s get some runs !!

  601. Don Vito A. Bellamo

OK…it is not time to panic, but here are some things that I don’t like : Farnsworth or Hawkins pitching when the game is actually on the line…and…watching an offense with this many stars on it, getting blanked by a team that will likely finish with at least 90 losses this year….now, I’m going to go kick the cat…. ;-)

  602. JR Yankees

This offense is quite pitiful this evening. I fwe lose cause Farnsy gives up 2 runs in the 5th we cannot blame him. We’ce had a man on 2nd base three innings in a row and we can’t drive any of them in. Complete nonsense. This offense needs a swift kick. We need something to get us jumpstarted…maybe Cano singling to lead off an inning. Here we go…

  603. Gitmo

I didn’t imply that Torre was still the manager of the Yankees, Neil, just that Farnsworth hasn’t pitched two innings since before Torre was his manager.

  604. Steph

Well, Cano singles. The Yanks still have a chance. I wonder if Kennedy will come in for the bottom half?
And who the heck is the girl screaming bloody murder in the stands? Geesh.

  606. myrtlebeachfan

Can you believe Farnsworth? The game could be called at any minute and there he goes giving up two runs in the inning that makes it qualify as a game.

Why in the world did Girardi put him in then? He needed to wait until the 6th when we may have had a lead. Sigh.

I guess the Yankees don’t need any couch managers, but our offense is looking pathetic. Namely Damon and Giambi. They can’t hit anything and arent swinging at strikes.

  607. Majambo

I want the billhilly to succeed but he CAN’T! He grooved that pitch to Guillen on an 0-2 pitch. Argh!!!! HE’S GOTTA GO!!!!!!!

  622. CaptainsCorner

Why does everyone except Arod, Abreu, Matsui and even back up Molina look like little league batters at the plate? It is past the point of being pathetic, it is getting to embarrassing. Damon looks like he has zero bat speed.

  623. Teddy

Shelley has really gotten screwed this year. When spring started it looked like 1B was his job to lose, and all he did was hit well and show tremendous strides in the field. Now, he gets sent down and we have to live with anemic performances from Giambi, Betemit, etc. I’m not saying Shelley would do better (which I actually think he would, and significantly better than the other to), but he definitely deserved the oppurtunity.

  624. Steph

There won’t be a bullpen tomorrow at this rate. Well, aside from Joba and Mo. But Kennedy would have to go 7 or so.

The Yankees really got screwed in this game, they will undoubtedly lose but they also are using up their whole bullpen, for what? This is why they needed a long man, but the long men that they supposedly had are all garbage. Its a real shame that they Yankees have a great farm system with great arms but the good ones are either getting over TJ surgery or are in AA or A ball. BTW, that great pitching prospect Steven White got blasted in the Scranton game tonite. The only reliable starting prospect right now in AAA is Horne.

  626. anti-mussina

another pathetic performance by the offense. time to fire kevin long.

  627. Dee

Boston Dave, yeah the rain stopped. Look like the game could go 9 innings and we will see IPK?

  638. Steph

Paolo-if the Yanks are doomed to win the game, I’d be awfully happy.

  639. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    Brilliant move !…now comes IPK for a likely 3 inning start….GENIUS ! ( Ok, I know I’m being a Monday AM quarterback,…,but this really s*cks ! )

  640. Jeff NJ

Now Kennedy is in. This would be fine, if the offense would have scored any runs. Everything falls on the offense to this point.

  641. DJ

Boy, things get so friendly around here when the Yanks are losing… :|

  642. Paul

The game can be called at any time now. If it is tied, or a lead changed, then they will continue playing the next day.

  643. Paolo

Well, at least IPK will not get a loss to his belt…

  644. Jimbob

Miggs – what are you talking about? There are still rain shortened games. The rule is that if you only get to finish the top of an inning and the home team still needs last ups, you go back to the end of the previous inning assuming it is through at least the 5th. If it is a tie at that point, they will finish the game another day.

  645. Dee

Kevin Long is a star and the reason Arod and the rest of offense even had the reason they had last year, so his job is safe and rightfully so. But do we need to tweak the batting order? Definitely if this keeps up.

  647. chaossolver

lol gotta love girardi just did the good old Pinella play… starting the relievers and relieve them with the starter…
what a hilarious game… apparently the offense decided to take the game off

  648. McLovin

Why was Ian Kennedy not in the 5th.Keep treating these Young kids like babies and they will pitch like them.No excuse to not use Kennedy it was raining harder before.

Fransworth can’t pitch two days in a row or back to back innings.

  649. SDJohn

    Jennifer,

Did you see the puppy pee last inning?

  650. joe

John Sterling just made a good point. Yeah Farnworthless did give up 2 runs but 2 runs in 5 innings isn’t bad. The offense really needs to get going quick because right now they look absolutely pathetic. Double plays, strikeouts, lazy fly balls, etc. It is early so there is plenty of time to right the ship, but in all honesty, 2 runs, 5 innings from your bullpen is pretty good.

  651. Rebecca--Optimist Prime--Mission 2708

Last time I checked it was a 2-0 game. So our offense isn’t doing much, but also, last time I checked, two runs wasn’t exactly the hardest deficit to come back from. I mean. Really.

Ian, please throw some strikes, kay? Just like that, thanks.

  652. Frank Discussion

Looks like Kennedy is our much heralded long relief man. This simply doesn’t make any sense at all.

  653. Global Colding

    heheeee heheeeee heheeeeeeee heheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  654. CaptainsCorner

Kennedy should of just started the game. The bullpen has already been used a lot. You pitcher the starter and then worry about the rain when it rains not before the game. At this point it did nothing but waste everyone.

  655. matt

Why in earth is Kennedy pitching right now? Push him back to tomorrow and then Pettite goes against the Sox, and you dont have Hughes on sunday night on national television.

The yanks are gonna lose anyway, so why waste kennedy, and have him pitching in the rain where he will be throwing heavier wet balls.

    dumb move

  656. Luigi

    girardi completely mismanaged this game

  657. Neil

Gitmo, I didn’t even read your comment before mine, I was sarcastically implying that this is the same exact way Torre would play this out

  658. SDJohn

Ian picking up where he left off.

  659. Angel

What exactly constructive/useful is it, that that person contributes here again?

  660. Tim

Wow, I have to really blame this game on Girardi, this loss is on the manager for using Farnsworthless for 2 innings. This is pathetic and this “over the hill gang” offense is more than pathetic. Lets bring up the kids, Cash!

  661. myrtlebeachfan

I’m definitely questioning Joe’s managing of this game. Why not start Kennedy? I don’t get it. Oh well. Let’s just waste the bullpen right before our series with Boston.

  662. Rey22

  671. Angel

Game 9, for whoever had game 9 as the over/under on when people would start whining about how Girardi managed a game.

  672. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

Girardi didn’t mismanage this game, the offense just can’t get it together tonight

  673. Jax

    Kennedy’s first inning woes continue.

  674. Fleas (Almost Always Negative

I am really glad we didn’t get Santana this year..

After all he would be embarrassed to play with this sorry bunch

C’mon people .. blame it on the umps, cold or the rain whatever..

    this team sucks!

  675. CaptainsCorner

Is Matsui 70 years old? He is absolutely dreadful out there. He should never ever play the field. What is that the 5th ball so far this year that he misplayed?

  676. Beezr

Farsnworth is like an out lier in this pen. All of the other guys are throwing great. He doesn’t fit and enough is enough. We know what happens with him. I hope this is his last chance.

But I’m calm, SJ44, I’m calm. I know that because I’m still enjoying the games. The last few seasons have inoculated me from these bad beginnings. Last year I had moments of doubt and it made watching the games not pleasant. Every error or GIDP felt like end of the season. This season I can think of how it went last year and find solace and affirmation.

  677. Gitmo

My bad Neil. I guess this game has me a little on edge. I apologize.

  678. Rob

Matsui should’ve had that, no doubt. He sucks in the field.

  691. Evil Empire

why is damon at dh? he cant hit, at least when hes in left hes helping the team

  692. Sterling Steiner

This Girardi move is hands down one of the dumbest things I have seen since I’ve followed baseball religiously. I really have to question his managerial skills in this game. You can’t go into the game thinking about the “what ifs,” you have to be thinking about right now, and what will get you to the fast track for a win right now. That’s certainly not starting Bruney then burning the mid and late relief.

This game was just a weird game to me. I’m a little confused watching it.

  693. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

now we have to pricks tonight Fleas and Anit-muss the regualars..give a damn break already you two

  694. V

Rofl – Girardi mismanaged the game? And if Kennedy started and only went 4 innings, we’d still have used the bullpen for 5. Wow, all of these armchair managers are amusing.

  695. PJH

Girardi’s managing may be questionable, but I dont blame him for not starting Kennedy for a 2 reasons.
1)Why put the kid out there when the conditions are poor and he struggled his first start.
2)The game should have been called and still should be called. These are not conditions baseball is meant to be played in. The lake on the field as my evidence.

  696. Fleas (Almost Always Negative

reason why kennedy didn’t start is because he has the trots. He had to wait until his anti-diaherria medicine kicks in… sadly it went from his arse to his arm.

  697. SDJohn

I’m not so much saying Girardi mis-managed the game, I’m saying why haven’t we had 1 straight steal all year. Teams run all over us. We have put 1 hit and run on, it worked. We haven’t done it again. It’s like watching the Yanks in 07, 06, and 05 all over again. In fact, besides the management of the pen, I can’t tell which Joe is managing the Yanks.

  698. GoSox

Is this becoming a trend? The Giants and Dodgers did the same thing last week — they held off on using their youngsters in the rain, then, when the game didn’t get called, they brought them both in.

I don’t get it — if you were worried about subjecting Kennedy to these conditions at the start of the game, does it really make sense to have him pitch now? And even if you just wanted to be sure he’d pitch a full game and wouldn’t be “wasted” in a game that got postponed, is it really good for a young starter to be told he’s not starting, then be dragged into the game in the sixth?

  699. Rob

It is so early in the season, we ought not worry too much, but the hitters have made scrub pitchers look like Koufax.

  700. Steph

Anti-Mussina-since when does losing one game and possibly the second of a three game set constitute a sweep? There’s still tomorrow’s game.
    Lighten up.

  701. mel

    Fleas,

No offense, but Santana has nothing to do with the offense.

  702. V

    anti-mussina – are you 13?

  703. myrtlebeachfan

Pathetic is the only word to describe this. I like Girardi as a manager more than Torre, but Joe Torre never would have done this.

  704. NYY

Is this guy(IPK) the reason Yanks didn’t get Santana?

  705. V

This team sucks so bad, I have no ideas why you guys are watching the game. I have a great idea! The Orioles are doing well, root for them!

  706. Jeff NJ

I think Kennedy did not enjoy the 2 hour delay to his start. This game is a complete disaster and it all falls on Girardi. The pressure is going to start to mount for Joe until the offense decides to show up.

  707. Fleas (Almost Always Negative

Seriously, all you that actually have hope or any sort of belief that we will make it to the post season this year… I am laughing at you.. but crying at the yankees, cause it is true.

  710. Neil

It doesn’t matter if this game should have never started…the Royals played in the same rain and found a way to win.

  711. Sterling Steiner

You either start Kennedy or you don’t use him tonight and push him back to tomorrow.

Bringing a SP in in the 6th inning totally takes him out of his element. He’s not an experienced starter or a reliever, he’s a kid who’s pitched 4 games prior to this in his career, you can’t expect him to succeed in this environment.

I’m just glad he didn’t come in in the middle of an inning.

  712. YankeeJosh

    Steph

I don’t blame Girardi for not starting Kennedy. It was a gutsy move and a good gamble. I do think he held him out too long. At most you’ll get 3/4 innings from Kennedy tonight. If Ian started the 5th, you could have gotten 4 or 5 and saved the rest of the pen, even if he was still ineffective.

Still, it’s just one game, and killing the pen isn’t worth it.

  713. Paolo

  723. Rob

I don’t blame this at all on girardi. His goal is to protect the youngins. Nine times out of ten this game would be rained delayed in the second inning. He did the right thing. Its not his fault the offense is inept.

  724. Amanda from La.

I have TOTAL faith in this team, really. But here I am just waiting for the turn around, I know it will happen but I hate this whole waiting thing. Still rooting and focusing on 27 in 08 :)

Well look at that, the inning is over! Let’s score some runs guys!

  725. Boston Dave

It would be nice for this lineup to get in a groove already

    but…

relax. there are 150+ games to catch those pesky Orioles. I aint scurred.

  726. V

I will go on record on saying I believe it was a brilliant move on Girardi’s part to start with the bullpen and go to Kennedy after the rain let up. I DO think there should have been a rain delay earlier on. It hasn’t worked out thus far, but 2 ER in 5 IP by the bullpen is excellent.

The offense is extremely off at the moment. It WILL wake up. We always do well vs. Boston, and then we go to the warm weather of Tampa.

  727. Matt Waters

“Is this guy(IPK) the reason Yanks didn’t get Santana?”

No. If Kennedy were substituted for Hughes, Wang would have had to be included. And yeah, the kid has one bad start and has the nerve to get burnt on a terrible play by Matsui, so let’s start torching him now. Never mind his impeccable minor league track record, DAMNIT HE WAS TERRIBLE IN HIS FIRST START OF THE SEASON! GET HIM OUT OF HERE! OH MY GOD WE’RE GOING TO BE 4-5! WE’RE DOOOOOOMMMMMMMEEEEDDDDDDDDD

The slow starts are so annoying…it seems the more the so called baseball experts keep saying teams have these awesome 1,000 run offenses like the Yankees and Tigers, the less these teams score and look pathetic at the plate…I will never forget when we played Detroit in the playoffs and everyone kept talking about he greatest lineup ever seen on paper and we couldn’t hit a beach ball….and we look like that tonight……wow another 1-2-3 inning, they look pathetic tonight but I said the same last year…I just think this is another transition year but if you read a good article by Verducci on SI.com he talks about how teams are buying out the free agent years of most players, so we will have to do it all with the farm system…

  759. YankeeJosh

It’s not fair to judge Kennedy from tonight. He came in in relief, unexpectedly in bad weather and got hurt by a bad play by Matsui.

That said, who knows about all the trade rumors, but I would have had to consider including him in a deal (without Wang) for Santana.

I’m not sure Ohlendorf would be available tomorrow. He pitched 3 innings yesterday. You’d like to give him some time off. I don’t think ALby can be called back up yet unless they DL someone, so maybe Patterson gets the call and someone in the pen gets optioned down?

Cone is right. He thought he was supposed to start, was out there long tossing than was shut down. And now came in the middle of the game. As he said he needs to get his work in and work things out. I don’t take away anything bad from this start.

  774. Steph

I wonder if the Yanks will at least make a complaint about having to play in these conditions…

  775. Barry Bonds

I’m a free agent who had one of the best careers in the history of the sport.

I’m eager to play to prove to everyone that I’ve still got it.

I’ll come at a reasonable, 1 year contract price. And I want to be in the AL and DH.

Pinstripes are good, they’ll make me look skinnier, get some of the attention from the media off of me if I look like I lost some weight.

    Cashman, you have my number.

The Red Sox will be 4-5 after tonight.

    Is that also “horrendous”?

  780. Cloud

  781. Steph

Alby can’t be called back up yet, so the Yanks would have to DL someone to bring him up, yes.
I think they’ll practically need to send someone down to Scranton just to get a fresh arm for tomorrow if Pettitte doesn’t go 7. It’ll be interesting to see what they do.

  782. disgusted...

possible AL East Standings (if current scores hold up)

    Baltimore 6-1
    Toronto 4-4
    Yanks 4-5
    Sox 4-5
    Tampa Bay 3-5

The Yanks would be .5 games behind a team that has a chance of winning the AL East this season (Baltimore won’t). no need to panic.

  785. Yankee Fan in Boston

It’s going to take many years of success in the league for Kennedy to get some of the calls he wanted tonight. His style of pitching has little to no margin for error.

Having Santana wouldn’t be that helpful when the team is scoring zero runs like tonight. Pitching is not the biggest problem when you’re 26th in the majors in runs scored.

come check out my live blog if you are bored at http://stirthedrink.blogspot.com

  793. YankeeJosh

The only quibble I have tonight is the use of the bullpen. It’s fine to decide to start with the pen and then go to Kennedy, but going 5 with the pen made no sense.

Once it got to the fifth, it was clear this would be an official game, and Kennedy should have been in imo. Getting 3 innings from your starter in back to back games is putting too much on the bullpen.

  794. Fleas (Almost Always Negative

this team needs something to get them going… like uhm.. how about some PEDS!!!

  795. berniepaul&tino

Sign Bonds and find a way to trade for Nick Johnson.

  796. Barry Bonds

Oh, did I mention my pending perjury indictment? Or my rampant usage of Steroids beginning in 2001?

Having thought about it, though, I’m not sure the Pinstripes would get the media attention off of me. After all, the media flocked around Clemens and Pettitte while igoring Tejada after the Mitchell report was released, right? The Pinstripes will probably just draw even more attention to me.

  797. CaptainsCorner

The bullpen is getting used way too much. Pettitte better give them some length otherwise they are going to be in trouble. Once Girardi saw that they weren’t going to stop the game no matter how much it was raining then he should of just brought Kennedy in. You just can not keep using the bullpen when it is not necessary and tonight it was not necessary. Girardi has to be more careful with that because people said when he managed the Marlins he loved going to the bullpen earlier then he needed to.

  798. disgusted...

i think we better sign roger mid season again..

  799. myrtlebeachfan

Kennedy is really locating this inning but getting horrible calls. I guess rookies get NOTHING when they come up. Does he need to PAY for calls? Or does he just need to be a Pedro or Clemens.

  800. Bob

Anyone complaining about the pitching, especially Hughes and Kennedy, doesn’t have a clue. They are young, they are gonna have ups and downs.

It’s the offense that has been the problem so far. If Torre was still here everyone would be blaming him for not motivating them. What’s the reason now?

  801. Steph

yankees were willing to sign clemens to a rich contract but not bonds? i think cashman is a racist.

    Fleas,

I thought of you and “Max” when I read this:

Thanks for assuaging some of my concerns about Hughes.

BTW, I wanted the Yankees to trade Hughes for Santana and think they erred in not doing so. However, since they didn’t, I certainly want Hughes to thrive. In fact, even had they traded Hughes, I would have cheered for him regardless. (How could I not like and admire a 21-yr-old who comports himself with more maturity and humility than I do at 33?)

In fact, unless ex-Yankees go to the Red Sox or other AL East rival, or they malign Joe Torre as a racist, I tend to harbor a soft spot for them anyway. To be honest, I can’t even summon genuine animosity for Sheffield, if I don’t necessarily root for him anymore.

BTW, I had an 15-minute long conversation with Joe Mcillvaine at Dolphins Stadium during the Marlins-Yankees series last month. McIllvaine, the former Mets GM, is now a scout for the Twins, so I started to question him about the Santana trade.

Naturally, he couldn’t criticize Smith GM but when I asked him why the Twins didn’t accept the Hughes, Cabrera, Marquez, Hiligoss offer, he kept invoking poker analogies. Which I interpreted as what we all now know– Smith was pitting the Red Sox against the Yankees in the hope the Yankees would offer both Hughes and Kennedy.

He also said by the time January arrived, the Mets offer was the best one available because both the Yankees and Red Sox scaled back theirs considerably. Neither ever withdrew their offers. They just whittled them down as time went on.

Incidentally, McIllvaine think Delois Guerra is the best player the Twins acquired in the deal. McIllvaine also think Cody Rasmus will be the Cardinals starting CF by the All-Star break and will bloom into a legitimate star.

  803. V

I’ll take Kennedy for the next 7 years and the money used to sign Santana rather than Santana. Period. I don’t care what it would have taken to land him. I’m glad we didn’t.

There is NO reason Grienke should be pitching – bad move by the Royals manager. Too many pitches on a young arm in bad weather.

  819. Doreen

Kennedy’s settled down, it would seem. He really does have some “first” inning issues, doesn’t he? I’d heard a couple of weeks ago that he was trying to change up his pre-game routine, but I don’t think coming into a game in the 6th inning was part of that. :) Seriously, though, it is something that he’s going to have to overcome.

    SJ44 -

Record-wise, this is not an abysmal start. It’s knowing that for the most part they’re getting pretty good pitching and wasting it because the offense hasn’t gotten up to speed yet. And I know the schedule and the weather haven’t been helpful, but even you have to admit that this is maybe just a bit unexpected?

The Yankees are lucky it’s the Orioles off to a good start and not the Red Sox.

  820. Andrew

Cano’s lackidasical swing there was equally pathetic. I understand it’s early in the season, but some of these guys look like they just want to go home. The season’s over. The Yankees should throw in the towel, and take the rest of the season off, so they can rest for next year. (sarcasm, yes).

  855. Drive 4-5

The lack of Yankee ofense is nothing less than stunning. They are wasting a terrific run by their bullpen.

In fairness to Ian Kennedy, the Yankees may very well have rushed him this year. When does 4 major league starts earn someone a guaranteed spot in the rotation the following year? Not to mention all the publicity and added pressure. He had a high walk to innings pitch ratio last year. He doesnt seem to have major league command yet.

They’d be doing him a favor if they let him develop more.Eventually, he’ll be a 4th or 5th starter.

  856. mel

    Fleas,

    So you’re an insider, huh?

And the Yankees are your favorite team?

  858. miggs

Wow I can usually keep my cool but this is getting ridiculous. Melky ran RIGHT INTO that double play… if he just stops, they can only get one out and that Damon double scores a run.

They’re just playing stupid baseball. I know its early in the season. I’m not worried about the big picture. I’m worried about the way they are playing this game.

Grienke, that guy threw 120 pitches. Cano swings at the FIRST pitch and grounds out. I just don’t get it. Take a pitch !

Yankees need another youth infusion. Maybe Brett Gardner should be called up. Let him start in Left.

  926. V

I am 100% opposed to signing Barry Bonds. I do note that anti-mussina has been quiet since ‘Barry Bonds’ arrived.

  927. Tommy

damon is absolutely useless, how long is he signed for?

  928. Mike Mineo

putting Farnsworth in for 2 innings instead of 1 was a pitiful move though. I don’t see why he could have put Kennedy out there for 4 innings instead of 3… he is a starting pitcher after all. apart from saving a run or two, it just tires the bullpen even more and sets the team up horribly for tomorrow and the upcoming Red Sox series. this false sense of confidence in washed up scrubs like Farnsworth, Giambi, and Damon just because of their financial status is sickening.

the Yankees better be willing to use Kennedy tomorrow in a long relief… I don’t feel like wasting Joba for 2-3 innings (and in turn making him not available for the first two Red Sox games) because of mismanagement.

since the Yankees are facing someone tomorrow who had an ERA under 6 last year, eating innings will be a must in order to at least take a game out of the Red Sox series. the Yankees scoring 0-2 runs per game off of such pitchers is really fun to watch.

Disgrace. The offense is a pathetic disgrace. Shut out by the KC Royals. Can’t wait to hear the apologists offer up the usual excuses.

They also said the ground’s crew was doing a “tremendous job tonight” I guess they’re watching a different game…

Also, I look forward to you abusing that short porch in right this year.

  939. Angel

Acquiring Bonds doesn’t make any sense to the Yankees. It creates more a logjam at DH than they already have.

  940. Richard

at least the yanks aren’t 1-7

  941. Abepeter

    Drive 4-5

Thats been my point about Kennedy all spring. He only had a few starts last year and very little pressure because the Yankees were mashing. But like you said, he walks alot of guys and doesn’t have overpowering stuff. In time I think he’ll be a good pitcher but I think he has work to do. But there’s a ton of people on this forum that think of every excuse imagineable – the ump is bad, its raining, its early… what’s wrong with saying the obvious he looks a little overmatched and has work to do.

If the pressure on young player is too much it could damage them in the long run.

  942. Kill-Schill(ing)

Matsui did look awful on that play in LF. That’s the second fly-ball to LF I can recall he misplayed, although he caught the one in the Stadium.

  946. jennifer-Phil Hughes saved!! Mussina is NOT DONE! anti-anti

My only criticism of Joe today is pushing Kyle for a second inning. If you get one clean inning out of him, you thank god and move on to the next guy.

  947. Jeff NJ

Here’s where I think they went wrong tonight. Joe G, by starting Bruney, indicated that he thought the game would be rained out and therefore not count. The offense was worse tonight then it has been all season. Girardi killed the team’s intensity with the gamble. Tomorrow is a must win.

  948. Rocco

“Matsui did look awful on that play in LF. That’s the second fly-ball to LF I can recall he misplayed, although he caught the one in the Stadium.”

see this is why we shouldn’t have traded melky in the santana deal… We would have been putting damon in center and matsui in left every day.

  949. Amanda from La.

tomorrow is a new day. hopefully a good one at that.

  960. Jensen

The offense is the problem here; pitching is doing at least as well as expected.

Get rid of Giambi and Damon and we’d be getting somewhere. Bring back Duncan and the that speedy rookie who should’ve come up with the team after spring training.

  961. Luigi

    Well that was depressing

heres some good news from the minors…

    Jesus Montero: 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
    Austin Jackson: 2 for 5, 1 R, 2 K
    Abe Almonte: 4 for 5, 3 RBI, 1 SB, 1 E (fielding)

  966. CaptainsCorner

    Some notes to Girardi..
1)Farnsidiot can not pitch 2 innings or 2 days in a row.
2)Damon HAS to be the everyday LF. Matsui is a liability and can not play the field ever.
3)If he keeps using Giambi in the field everyday he will be on the DL very soon.
4)Cano must bat at the bottom of the lineup until he re learns or learns the strike zone. His at bats are not acceptable.
    5) Dont go to the bullpen unless it is necessary because they are going to be blown out. Todays bullpen usuage was totally not necessary.

  967. Rocco

“Cone is a pleasure to listen to. I can’t abide Paul O’Neil. Great player but I’m not interested in hearing incessant jokes about Nevele and her re-dreckorating and O’Neil’s eating habits.”

  971. Doreen

I won’t second guess Girardi’s move. I thought it was a good one and you all saw the rain on your television screens. This game should have had a rain delay. If it had, he would have brought Kennedy in after the delay. I also think that even as far in as the 4th inning, Girardi probably thought there’d be a rain delay, if not a rainout, since the field conditions were horrible.

And as bad as the 2nd inning Kyle pitched was, it was only 2 runs. And Kennedy only gave up 2 runs. This offense was pitiful. That’s the story in a nutshell.

  972. mel

    Luigi,

Add to that: Ian was able to repair his ERA a bit. He shaved about 10,000 points off.

  973. Dan from Mass

Wow, the trolls must be out to have Joe ready to fight. I just skim for a couple names, so I don’t even know what they said.

I’m only watching from MLB Gameday in Massachusetts, but from what I see, I’m proud of the Yanks tonight. They’re obviously still not hitting. That will come. But Bruney took one for the team and pitched well, Traber seemed ok. Farnsworth wasn’t great, but between him and IPK they kept it close enough. You have to figure that 2 times out of 3, the Yanks would score at least 4 against the Royals.

For whatever reason, they didn’t tonight. But Gonzalez came up – got his first extra-base hit behind him. I don’t know – I see some real positives from the game. Maybe it’s just the Rebecca in me.

  974. Bob

    IT’S NOT THE PITCHING!!!!!

Sure Farnsworth is garbage, but he could have been perfect and it wouldn’t have mattered.

You have to score at least 1 run to win.

  975. Boston Dave

    Doreen,

that’s right. If the game had been suspended or called like it should ahve been, the Royals lose Greinke and the Yanks save IPK.

The only mistake tonight was that Girardi took a gamble that the umps would use reason and logic.

  976. andrew33

We saw an awful first half last year so why be worried about this 4-5 start. But these games are not much fun, have they had a rally except in that 4th game against Tampa. Very surprising to me to see these injuries after they all seemed healty during the spring – but more importantly score a few runs – i dont want to hear about the awful weather. Its like sox fans complaining about the long road trip and clearly the royals had no problem scoring at least 1 tonight.

Hopefully a few of these veterans outside of arod/abreu start hitting and soon – nice job by bruney/traber.

  977. Boston Dave

    Dan,

    no doubt.

if there is a silver lining:

i’d rather see the yanks losing 4-0 than 10-8 like many games last season. people would be complaining either way but you need to put it in perspective.

the offense is coming. it was the pitching i wasnt sure of… but the pitching has been better than expected.

  978. Frank Discussion

Pitching wasn’t bad at all, too much dead weight in the lineup… Damon, Giambi, Cano and Cabrera are all simply floundering around at the plate. Cano seems to lost what little plate discipline he had and Giambi just looks lost.

  979. KConn

AA. Is Abe Almonte the little brother of Erick Almonte?

BB. Can you believe that some were comparing Cano to Carew? oh please.

  985. SDJohn

Joe’s press conference. “We aren’t hitting well”. Really? Shut out by the Royals. Well, only way to go is up? But if there was a team that could put up a – runs it would be us. Maybe Melky hits an inside the parker, but instead of running correctly, he runs to 3rd,2nd, 1st, and home for a negative 1 run game, and we lose 0- neg 1.

  986. Yazman

“Ensberg tweaked his knee sliding down the bench to make room for Jeter. I’m guessing once Jeter’s able to come off the bench, Ensberg’s reverse movement up the bench should tweak his knee back the other way, and he’ll be fine.”

I meant to say “tweaked his ankle.”

  987. Ross K

There are way too many guys swinging wildly at first pitches and popping up for an easy out. I’m talking to you especially Damon and Giambi. I learned from last year’s tumultuous season to not declare that the season’s over a month or even 3 months in but I can’t help but be concerned. The bullpen besides Hawkins and Farnsworthless have looked great and the rotation has been decent enough, but producing runs is this teams bread and butter so guys like Cano, Giambi and Damon need to step up and start hitting.

Based on Kennedy’s comments and Bruney’s, this strategy isn’t something you would want to do too often. Both seemed a little bit “weirded out” by having to be in situations they’re not accustomed to.

  993. S.A.-Phil Hughes is Saved and will be fine! Goodness..

We need to start scoring some runs. Hopefully that starts tomorrow.

  994. SDJohn

Something we are missing here. Not only are we not hitting with RISP, we are not making productive outs, we aren’t running even with the odd occurence of Damon being on base, we are not putting any pressure on the defense. We haven’t had but 1 hit and run attempt all year. When you are strugling, you have to do these things. I’m not saying tonight, because of the weather, but damn, do something. I’m sick and tired of EVERY pitcher we have faced getting “he’s an incredible pitcher” line post game. Greinke, Sonnanstine, Edwin Jackson (great stuff NEVER put all together, and rocked against good offenses), Hammel. C’mon. Show some pride at least.

  995. x23

I thought the game should have been delayed. From the looks of it, it was raining pretty darn hard. Joe did made the right call by not starting Kennedy. It would suck for him to go out there pitch one or two innings and wait 1-2 hrs. He def. wouldn’t be back there if thats the case. Then ur burning the pen for 6-8 innings.

  996. CB

Blaming Girardi for this loss is silly.

The pitching staff gave up 4 runs. 4. That’s it.

If the yankee pitching staff gives 4 runs they should win 80% of the time.

This game is entirely on the offense. It’s not the manager.

Will this game put them in a bind in terms of bull pen workload – yes, it could. That’s a hard call for Girardi you could make an argument either way.

But there’s nothing Girardi did today that cost them the game.

That said they are 4-5 and that’s fine. Baltimore is a terrible team. Toronto is 4-4 and Boston is also 4-5.

They are going to start to hit. But the manager can’t make them.

The field wasn’t bad, I didn’t see anyone slipping even if there was water in some places. The home team obviously knew how well the field would drain. Girardi didn’t.

Still would have lost, but sometimes I think managers get a bit too clever.

  1004. SDJohn

I think Girardi is a little shocked at how bad Matsui is in Left. Girardi is one of those types to sit back and watch for a bit, but he won’t let this ride to much longer. I don’t think he will put up with Giambi hitting .067, and run him out there everyday. I would love to see Betemit DFA’d and someone like Gardner come up to get some playing time. We don’t have to much roster flexibility this year. Having 4 first basemen/DH’s will really screw up hour roster. We may be seeing the last of Betemit’s days in a Yankee uniform.

  1008. CaptainsCorner

I really don’t understand why Duncan was sent down. The team can use some of his energy now. Ensberg doesn’t play anyway and I really don’t even understand why he is even on this team. He has no role. Especially since he hurt his ankle then they should of just put him on the DL. Duncan probably felt awful.

  1009. Louie Bags

I dont blame girardi but i do blame Cashman….We should of pulled the trigger for Santana and got rid of Hughes and Kennedy…their over-rated bums.

1010. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

1011. JGNYC (insert Pro-Yankee slogan here)

I’m a bit confused with Duncan being sent down as well because, with with Matsui or Damon as our DH (which has been the case for most of the season thus far), who is our OF off the bench now? Duncan was the only one.

  1012. Mehdi in SF

I take it this Louie Bags is a troll? Either way he seems like a muppet.

  1013. SDJohn

    Louie,

Your an idiot. Hughes and Kennedy bums, after 2 outings? Get a clue man, came back in 2-3 years and complain then when Santana is getting lit up, and Hughes and Kennedy are pitching well. Every fan should have been prepared for the ups and downs of a 21 and a 23 y/o starting pitcher. If your gonna vent, at least put the blame on the offense. Unless Santana pitched every 5th day, and DH’d the other 4 days of the week we would still be struggling offensively. Would you have liked to see the dynamic duo of Damon and Matsui DAILY in the outfield?

  1014. back bench

    Positives from today:

    A-Rod fielding under abysmal conditions

Bruney – Wow, who knew. He has obviously made a deal with the devil – just hope the payback isn’t due until after Brian wins a game in the 08 WS for us

Molina – Gathwright getting schooled by the KC manager (priceless) Teams will think twice about running on Jose

Traber – Also very good. Whozat and the others called this one

Lessons learned – JG has a much better idea of what he has with Matsui, Cano (at this point in the season), Giambi and Cabrera. Expect changes.

    Negatives (besides the obvious)

Losing games to teams we should beat – These are “L’s” that will haunt us in September

Knowing that we’re losing games we should win and that the competition we face will get better soon – possibly before we’re ready to handle it

Having to watch players we liked (Matsui, Giambi, Damon) on the downside of their careers and really fading before your eyes

  1015. pat

Tomorrow isn’t a day game? Another red eye flight for the Yanks again tomorrow night.

  1016. SDJohn

We didn’t much have a choice except to send down Duncan. Nobody else has options. I think Betemit is in his last days of Yankee pinstripes though. We have Giambi, Ensberg, Betemit all for 1B/DH spots. Ensberg has no options to be sent down. Betemit may get back a mid-level prospect from someone like San Fran. They are probably actively shopping him. You still need some right handed pop off the bench (Ensberg).

  1017. Louie Bags

THe yankees arent supposed to be a homegrown organization, new york should be all about winning, and WINNING NOW.

I dont want to wait 2-3 years and see kennedy and hughes rip it up. I rather have Santana now and win 2 world series’s.

I dont see anything from kennedy, and i supported him last year, aswell as hughes, seems like other teams have adjusted and they have nothing else.

1018. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

since when does having Santana guarantee you 2 world series you moron !

  1019. Mike Mineo

Matsui is doing fine compared to the likes of Giambi, Damon, and Cano.

  1020. Louie Bags

  1021. SDJohn

Not supposed to be a homegrown organization? WTF are you talking about? 1 starting pitcher does not win you a wold series ring. You supported Kennedy last year? MLB is all about adjustments, young starting pitchers take a few years, not a few starts to grow into a major league caliber pitcher. Settle down little man, and learn some baseball before making idiotic comments like that.

1022. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

“YOu lack everything needed to understand baseball.”

  1024. SDJohn

Mike, people aren’t complaining about Matsui’s offense, but he shouldn’t play in leftfield again until he retires and starts playing tavern league softball. Should be fulltime DH duties no problem though. It just so happens that it gives us less flexible roster options though. After this year, that shouldn’t be a problem any longer.

  1025. back bench

    Mike Mineo

Watching Matsui in LF now cannot be anything but unsettling. He was a pretty good fielder as well as a very reliable bat. But first came the broken wrist, then the knee.

Now…not so much. Still a decent bat, but certainly not the player he was a very short time ago.

  1026. Mr. Mientkiewicz

Wow, rough one for my former team tonight. We had a long one in Pittsburgh, I got a pinch-hit, you could have used my bat tonight. It looks like you guys should be looking to ship off Damon, he needs a change of scenery. Let Matsui be the full-time DH, great guy, greater adult magazine collection. Get rid of Betemit and Ensberg, and keep the Big G on the bench. The pitching is actually looking pretty good. The bad weather excuses are running thin though…it’s chilly in Pittsburgh too.

You should bring up that Gardner kid, or at least someone that can get around without a walker. This could be a great team. I tried to tell Brian(that’s what I call Cash), I tried to tell him defense baby, you need some defense. How many games are you going to lose before you bring Dougie’s glove back. I’m here waiting, come get me. I love New York.
