New titles atop Yankees masthead

Received this press release from the Yankees:

Today the New York Yankees announced new titles for members of the Steinbrenner family.

George M. Steinbrenner III, Chairperson. Hal and Hank Steinbrenner, Co-Chairpersons. Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal, Jessica Steinbrenner and Joan Steinbrenner, Vice Chairpersons.

George M. Steinbrenner stated, “I am excited to announce these titles. I am pleased to work with my two sons, Hal and Hank. With me, they will jointly oversee the club on a day to day basis. I am also gratified to recognize the leadership of my daughter Jenny in the club’s charitable endeavors and her involvement with new stadium matters; as well as the contributions of my wife Joan and daughter Jessica in assisting me.

“Together with my executive team, the New York Yankees are prepared for the future and the exciting challenges the next several years will bring.”

I’m not sure what this means, estate planning perhaps. If nothing else, it shows that Hank and Hal are indeed on equal footing.

First family of the the New York Yankees

  2. Christine April 10th, 2008 at 3:10 pm

And it should quash any rumors of the Steinbrenners selling the Yankees.

Nice to see the patriarch acknowledge the daughters.

“Now let’s go out there and win a World Series.”

    Brandon,

Now I’m not a bra-burner (women’s rights activist), but I believe in equal rights for rich kids. :)

“First family of the the New York Yankees”

Sounds more like the Royal family now.

  7. Annie Savoy April 10th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I think it means that there will always be a Steinbrenner at the Yankees Offices….

  8. Richard April 10th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

“Furthermore, Hank and Hal would like to extend a special gracious thank you to Steve Swindal, for without him, none of this would be possible.”

  9. Florida Yank April 10th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Hank is the vocal one and figures in on baseball matters only. Hal is the quiet one and figures in on business decisions only with the new Stadium being his highest priority.
Daughter Jessica will be least seen with her involvement largely in Kinsman Stables in Ocala, Florida.

  10. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex") April 10th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

not that being a bra burner is a bad thing mel ;) but if it suits you I won’t hold it against anyone.

  11. mel April 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    Brandon,

    Ah, bras, a necessary evil.

Did you see where I said yesterday that Mickelson looks fabulous and is down to a training bra?

Well, something’s up cuz he’s 2 under through 2 today.

  12. Doreen April 10th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

    Brandon,

It’s always nice to be formally recognized for the work one does. :)

(Estate planning is a good idea, too!)

so who is the chair-man/woman/wife of Yankees offense needs a swift kick in the A$$?

  14. whoa April 10th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

No, their estate planning is taken care of by trusts.

I respect George’s privacy, but part of me wonders what his ailment is (stroke, dementia, alzheimer’s, etc..). I’m sure the info will be made public someday.

  16. Sara April 10th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

His ailment is the Yankees haven’t won a world series since 2000…i would categorize it as clinical depression!

    mel-

You ready for Boom Dizzle vs Melo & AI? Should be a good one on TNT tonight.

  18. Stan April 10th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Kinda hilarious. Today the Rays defeated the Mariners 7-0 with a non-changing temperature of 72 degrees and a wind of 2 MPH due to air conditioning whispers. No rain gear, blankets, or ski parkas in sight before a whopping crowd of 11,898.
Oh, the Mariners play at home in very similar conditions.
Meantime, the Yankees will play in +70 degree conditions for the first time this season when they visit the Rays next Monday.

    Buddy,

I asked you this last time, who’s Boom Dizzle?

  21. Buddy Biancalana April 10th, 2008 at 3:46 pm

    Baron Davis, c’mon now?

  22. mel April 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

K, got it now. To say this game has playoff implications is an understatement, huh?

  23. S.o.S.27 April 10th, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Man i bet Steve Swindel is kicking himself right now. Why does his ex not drop the name?

I wonder if George needs an assistant president? Heck i’ll accept assistant chairperson if need be.

  24. Buddy Biancalana April 10th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    S.o.S 27

I’ll be water boy if they need me. I went to HS with a guy whose cousin played with the Yanks for one year, so he got to be Batboy whenever he wanted, I was so jealous & still am now at the ripe old age of 36.

    __

So that she has the same last name as her kids?

  26. Buddy Biancalana April 10th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

    mel-

It should be fun, my feeling is that Golden State is going all out to get in the playoffs & then nothing will be left in the tank to move on, but maybe not.

  27. pat April 10th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

“Why does his ex not drop the name?”

You ever see the lines at the DMV?

  28. S.o.S.27 April 10th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

“So that she has the same last name as her kids?”

Steinbrenners as a last name just has a better ring to it. Im sure the kids wouldnt mind having it. Memo to George. Im available for adoption.

No Buddy. You cant be water boy! We need to check your Bucket list. Bat boy it is!!

  30. S.o.S.27 April 10th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

“You ever see the lines at the DMV?”

lol. I thought they owned one. Maybe they need to put a dmv in left field at the new stadium. Right already supposidly has a restaurante blocking some fans view of the game. Why not balance it out. Problem solved!

  31. tessa April 10th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

It isn’t just the DMV. It is credit cards, bank accounts, health insurance, social security, passport. And having the same name as your kids really matters if you ever want to take them on a trip abroad.

If your name is different than theirs, you have to bring birth certificates, marriage licences, and your patience. Nothing like being accused of kidnapping your own child, or being seated away from them in the plane because they assume you’re not ‘together.’

And, yes, I just got back. Apparently jetlag makes me testy.

  32. Christine April 10th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

She could always drop the Swindal for publicity, just keep it as is for her personal life.
