Today in The Journal News
Joe Girardi got creative with his pitching staff but the Yankees still lost to the Royals.
Jorge Posada got some good news on his shoulder. This notbook also has an update on Derek Jeter and news of a transaction.
————
The Yankees will try and avoid a sweep tonight with Andy Pettitte facing John Bale. Back later with the lineup and other news.

Need a win tonight going into the Boston series.
Agreed,Matsui cant be in the outfield.
Bye Bye Betemit….I cant watch him anymore.
Cant believe they havent stolen a base yet!
Well, one reason they haven’t stolen a base is that the next guy up hits the 1st or 2nd pitch into a DP, so they’ve eliminated most of their opportunities to do so.
Someone posted late last night that they were tired of hearing post-game interviews with the Yankees giving credit to the opposing team’s pitching. I am tending to agree. Some of those pitchers have indeed pitched very well, and the others have pitched fairly well. I can’t believe that a team that scored well over 900 runs last season didn’t hit good pitching at least every now and again. We know the Yankees like to beat up on bullpens, but that means they get to the starter just enough to get him out of the game. They haven’t done that so far this year.
I know some of the pitchers they’ve faced are strike-throwers who don’t walk a lot of hitters. But they seem remarkably impatient at the plate lately. Cano and Giambi stand out, but it’s Giambi who’s the surprise here. Over the years we’ve heard about how he has such a good batting eye, and yet this year he hasn’t been nearly as patient, or perhaps he just hasn’t been seeing the ball nearly as well at this early part of the season.
Players this good, with proven track records over several seasons, are not going to all of a sudden stop being able to hit. So, I realize that this is simply yet another slow April start. It’s too bad, because they could have gotten a jump on Boston, but, it is what it is.
Hey, at least they’ve been equal-opportunity run non-producers! Last season it seemed some pitchers got run support and others didn’t. So far, no one’s getting any real run support. See, there’s a silver lining to every cloud.
Pete -
You stated that Alberto Gonzalez was hitting .353 at SWB. His OBP was .353; his BA was .154 (he went 2 for 13 with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.)
Look at the AL East Standings. There is no way that either Baltimore NOR Toronto will finish at the top. This is simply their “rabbit” start in a very long race and I would expect both teams to finish under .500 this year. The race is going to boil down to ( again ) NYY and the despicable Red Sux. We are tied with those ding dongs after a very poor start by the Yankees. Tonight, Andy is gonna get us a convincing victory. We are taking BOTH games in Boston ( with or without Jeter ). Posada will be back soon, but I tell ya, Molina is no Slouch, my friends. All is well. No need to panic….we are in NO HOLE here. Even with Boston and with MUCH good baseball to be played ahead. Go Yankees.
Not sure, but I think they kept Ensberg (instead of Shelly) because he is the 3rd string emergency catcher. Got to think that Shelly could do that.
Interesting that Joe Torre’s slow starting ’07 team doesn’t appear to be so much different as a result of all the ST running, healthy snacks and new manager’s passion. Jeter has a leg injury, Po has a bad shoulder, Giambi’s already been sat out because he’s tweaked something. 1st base is still an open issue, the bench looks like hell, the bats are ice cold except for Abreu and A-Rod and even Rod has looked baffled more than once so far, putting on the golden sombrero two days ago.
I agree 100% with Doreen. Stop crediting the other pitcher already. I’ve seen a lot of impatience at the plate, really bad pitch selection. These guys are obviously pressing. Enough excuses. Just start hitting the ball.
And note to Coney: “jerk” may only be used in the noun form. Verb forms of “jerk” are prohibited on air.
The yankees have some big decisions to make. Right now their bench which seemed a strong point for them is showing wear and tear. Betemit is not an answer nor is Gonzalez.
The young pitchers are just that young. The hype that all of us had for them is starting to wear off. Hughes’ fastball is just not there and Kennedy looks like someone who could use some minor league seasoning. The yankees are learning the hard way that their is a big difference between the minor leagues and the major leagues. By the way Clay Buchholz and the Red Sox are learning the same thing.
Don’t be surprised to see Alan Horne, Rasner, or God forbid Igawa pitching for the yankees soon. A bad weekend with the Red Sox will cause a big time panic in the Steinbrenner family.
I’m not worried about the pitching staff. The team just needs to start hitting like they are supposed to. When they score the runs they are capable of on a day in and day out basis, the pitching has been good enough to win games.
I seriously don’t know why it is so hard for a hitter to say, “I’m guessing wrong” instead of crediting the pitcher.
Hughes had an excellent first outing and a shaky second outing. And up until Pagliarulo’s article surfaced, I didn’t hear anything about Hughes’ fastball “problems” and now, because he had that shaky second outing it’s all the rage to talk about his loss of velocity.
Kennedy had a shaky first outing, but last night did much better. Shaky first inning in the 6th, but was impressive after that. If he can figure out a way to stay out of trouble in his initial inning, he’ll be fine.
It’s way too early to say these guys are not ready for prime time. They are young and they do need more experience, but you have to have patience to withstand the rough spots they’re going to have, and look for improvements along the way.
I truly hope you’re wrong, Rick, and that I don’t see the Yankees hit the panic button in April.
” Alan Horne, Rasner, or God forbid Igawa “…
.
Alan Horne is EASILY the best option of those 3.
.
If I EVER see that bastage Igawa pitching again for the NYY, he better not have on those stupid sunglasses…and it better be after we have clinched the division and have nothing to play for. I have much respect for the people who make NYY decisions, but how many times does THAT bum have to show us that he is a dominant AAA pitcher that STINKS TO HIGH HEAVEN when at the MLB level ?
It’s time for Damon to stop acting as the team spokesman and make an attempt to do his talking on the field with bat & glove and take the game a little serious.
The media relations staff should inform the media that Damon is no longer available for interviews or quotes.
They don’t have any “big” decisions to make.
Its 9 games into the season. That’s it.
They are playing hard every night. They look “dead” because every team looks “dead” when they aren’t hitting.
The effort is there. If anything, some guys are trying too much right now. Just have to relax and let the game come to you.
A few years ago, Chris Shelton, then of the Tigers, had 8 HR’s in his first 9 games. He didn’t last the season with the Tigers. He was DFA’ed by August.
My point is, over the long haul, player who produce, end up producing.
They are nine games into the season. They don’t have to flip the roster, trade everybody or make any other panic moves folks want right now.
They need ONE game where everybody hits and things work out. Its the way it usually works in baseball. You just can’t predict when it will happen but, it will happen.
Its not football. Its what some here, especially on game nights, simply can’t comprehend.
They aren’t going to hit .150 all season. They have played 9 games so far this year and not one of them has been in baseball weather. It does make a difference.
We all knew the schedule would be challenging in April. At least thus far, they are doing what they need to do. Which is treading water.
Unless you think the Orioles are for real and will win 120 games this year.
Its amazing to me how Yankee fans have changed over the years. The Red Sox are 4-5, Schilling is out for the season, David Ortiz is hitting UNDER .100, and nobody is panicking in Boston.
Here, you have punks on this blog giving other blog members the finger on game threads, calling for massive changes across the board, and are in sheer panic after NINE games.
Since when did Yankee fans become doom and gloom Red Sox fans?
Chill out, relax and stop acting like fools after 9 games.
This is a very good team and they will find their way. It just may not happen at your timetable.
Brad -
Why?
“‘We’re playing like a bunch of old men right now,’ said Jason Giambi, who at 1 for 18 looks the most elderly.”
Easily the most amusing passage from today’s notebook.
Preach on, SJ!
Two items :
- It’s a given that the Yankees are stuck with the albatross contract of Giambi through this year.
- Betemit has absolutely no value to this team and his $1.165M contract can be partially taken by an NL team.
- Damon and Matsui are signed through 2009 at $13M each.
SJ44…..agreed !
Doreen -
Why ? Very easy answer. Damon waving at the ball and not being a contributor doesn’t call for making statements until he does contribute. All he says is what everybody knows …the team is not hitting, including him.
I’m no Wilson Betemit fan. But, how is this Betemit’s fault?
Cano is swinging through 85 MPH fastballs down the middle of the plate. In July, those balls are either hit in the gaps or the seats.
Giambi is swinging through pitches he usually hits. So was Jeter and Posada, before they got hurt.
My point is, the bench guy is not responsible for starting slowly.
They scored 968 runs and Wilson Betemit was the SAME player last year he was this year.
Its a team wide, except for Matsui and Abreu, slump.
When that happens, there isn’t a helluva lot you can do except wait for guys to bust out.
They will bust out. They are too good not to.
Joe has to do something to shake this team up. Move around the lineup keeping only Abreau and Alex in the same spot. The pitching for the most part is keeping the team in the game.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....yerId=4209
Not much in the way of ab’s not that it matters much at this point. We will break out eventually and I’d hate to be the pitcher/team that happens against.
Players are asked questions by the media. They answer them.
This isn’t little league. You don’t “punish” players by not having them talk to the media because they aren’t going well.
We need to curb our inner Steinbrenners in times like this.
Its a players JOB to talk to the media. Not talk only when they are going well.
I don’t want guys on the team who only talk to the media when they are playing well. That’s just being a frontrunning phony. We have enough of those in the fan base. We don’t need them in the locker room.
Go back and look at the Yankee teams of the 80′s. They were filled with guys like that.
Did you ever stop to think that by Damon talking, it takes some of the heat off guys (like Cano and Melky for example) who are uncomfortable talking to the media, especially after bad games?
Folks need to stop looking for the “boogymen” on the team and realize baseball is a game you can’t predict. You just have to let it play out. Frustrating as that can be at times for EVERYBODY. Players and fans.
Rick are you kidding panic and we are going to bring up Rasner or Igawa? What? Pitching isn’ the problem. It is the fact that they aren’t scoring runs! The Yankees could have pitched a shutout last night and lost! We didn’t lose cause Kyle gave up a bomb. We lost becuse we can’t hit with risp!!!
Brad -
What SJ44 just said, word for word.
seriously guys, chill out… as my runnning joke goes, if we judge the past week for post season, the Orioles are gonna win the series, white sox makes the wild card with both us and the sux missing the playoffs. just have to be patient, this is the yanks for christ’s sake.
I’m concerned about the injuries so soon…
I can’t help but wonder if Duncan’s demotion has something to do with the Tampa incident. Otherwise, why would a team keep TWO players who can only play third and first (the latter loosely in Ensberg’s case). The greatest disappointment here is that Girardi, in his first major decision, brought the right player up, but sent the wrong one packing. Now, what is SWB supposed to do with three first basemen and/or five outfielders?! I guess that Eric Duncan is suddenly a third baseman again.
It has nothing to do with the Tampa incident.
Its simple. Duncan has options remaining and Ensberg and Betemit do not.
The Yankees, at least right now, don’t want to lose Betemit or Ensberg. If they were to keep Duncan when they recalled Gonzalez, one of those guys would have to be DFA’ed.
Shelley just has the misfortune of being a guy with options remaining. Hence, he drew the short straw here.
He can get some AB’s in Scranton and will be back in 10 days.

Hey Pete- It’s 2000, not 1990. We’ll let it slide this time.
“It was Bruney’s first start since 1990 when he played Rookie League ball for the Diamondbacks”
Weird… but heres the quote to go with my above comment.
Pete, forget about the edit button, what we need is common sense and intelligent test for the posters on this blog. Grow up people it’s 9 games into the season. By the way how was A J Burnett 2nd outing this year. People on here had him anointed as the next cy young. It’s a looooong season. Remember you are not as bad as you look when you are losing, and not good as you look when you are winning
It is a long season and there have been a lot of positives such as the bull pen but as a person who watches every inning of every game i have to admit that i felt like throwing up last night with all of the double plays and Johnny Damon is starting to make me equally as ill.
Sara I also watch every inning of every game. I learned a long time ago one week does not make a season. look at it this way it will all even out soon enough so you are going to some great games to watch soon enough.
“I know some of the pitchers they’ve faced are strike-throwers who don’t walk a lot of hitters. But they seem remarkably impatient at the plate lately. Cano and Giambi stand out, but it’s Giambi who’s the surprise here. Over the years we’ve heard about how he has such a good batting eye, and yet this year he hasn’t been nearly as patient, or perhaps he just hasn’t been seeing the ball nearly as well at this early part of the season.”
What’s Giambi’s OBP?
He’s walking. He isn’t hitting. I actually applauded him yesterday, as he seemed to be one of the few guys willing to watch a few pitches.
Of course, throwing first pitch strikes does that.
Longtime i know you are right but it is hard! I love the Yankees and I am staying positive but it is just really hard to watch!! as long as they don’t dig themselves into a hole like the did last year…it took all of their energy to get out of it. this is when they were supposed to build their lead!
Hey guess what….it’s April 10.
Giambi needs to make a phone call.
Amen SJ. Everything you’ve said rings true. Just be patient people. Things will come around. The only thing I disagree with is the Boston not panicking thing. I happen to have the unfortunate privelge to live in Boston right now. The same sort of thing is happening here. There is slight panic in Ortiz hitting .100. The only difference is that when they don’t like what’s going on with the Sox here they pretend to care more about the upcoming football draft.
Andrea, you are right, it is April 10, but all of a sudden it will be May 1, then June 1. They can’t let the season snowball. Believe me, i am not panicing but do you really feel confident, as a Yankee fan, going into Boston this weekend? They need to win series and they just split again Tampa and lost the series to KC. KC!!!!!!!! these are the teams that they need to pound up on. April games count just as much as the ones in August and September. Had the Yankees won a few more April games last year they would have won the division.
Peter and your solution to the Betemit(supposed problem is) what the attorney general???He hits much worse then Betemit.
So Betemit is this yrs. target, what a joke….
Pete the Yanks are hitting 244 as a team and worse with RISP, want to bet that does not continue?
GET OFF THE LEDGE…….
Sara: the Yankees got swept the first series in Boston last year and ended up beating them for the season. It’s April 10. It’ll be ok, until it’s June 1 and it won’t be ok.
i know what you are saying and belive me i know it will turn around but no way i can watch a sweep in boston again!
the big thing coming out of camp this year was that the Yanks needed a hot start, put last year behind them, mix of veteran and youth…not for nothing but this team right now looks like a bunch of senior citizens! Matsui in the field, Damon at the plate, Giambi at the plate, even cano looks like he aged 10 years!
I know its early and the yankees are old so it takes them a little longer to get it going, but I just wish they didnt make every pitcher they face look like a cy young contender.
Yankees are winning 7 in a row, starting tonight ( I’m gonna keep saying that until it happens ! )
Hugh you are right, especially when the pitcher looks like he hasn’t even grown facial hair yet!! Grienke and the guy who came in to close for KC last night looked like they should still be in little league!
the whole “mix of veterens and youth thing is very misleading if youre not speaking of the pitching staff only. Mely and Cano are the only everyday players on the team under 32 years old.
Guys,
What exactly did Coney say? I didn’t know what Pete was referring to and I’m guessing he couldn’t post it on his portion of the blog.
He called Joe Girardi a jerkoff for not starting Kennedy
He actually called him a “jerkoff” that directly???? Did he not know he was on mic?
Maybe the Royals aren’t as bad as they have been in the past? These guys are driving in runs, stealing bases, playing witha whole lot of confidence and energy. I am not saying we shouldn’t be beating them but maybe the days of going into Kansas City and whipping up on them boys are over.
Maybe people wouldn’t take losses(which are going to happen in a 162 game season) so badly if they didn’t feel as though it was the Yankees God given right to win every game, especially the ones against “lowly” Kansas City and Tampa Bay.
Their bats will awaken sooner rather than later and we will get on a roll. The positive thing so far has been the bullpen, which hasnt been to strong the last few years. I don’t know about everyone else but I am excited about going into Boston this weekend. Name a better place to start a winning streak!!!!!!!!!!!
V -
Giambi does have 5 walks in 7 games; 1 hit. It was my impression that over that past couple of games he seems to be pressing and not taking as many pitches as he usually does. His OBP is not great, but 1 hit will do that to you, I guess.
Hugh -
He did not! Stop making trouble.
BTW Doreen,
Giambino is batting 0.300 if i recall correctly. he is certainly “seeing” the ball, it is just that his bat is not actually making contact w/ it. i wholeheartedly concur w/ SJ44. less panic please. we are 150 games remaining… we are yankee fans. u cannot win every game. if i recall as well, last year the sox were beaten by KC 2 of 3 in august, were they not? that probably made it that much more difficult for them come october, right?
Rock Smoother -
Basically, Cone said Kennedy was warming up in the outfield but then was jerked off, meaning taken off, the field because Girardi didn’t want him to start if it was going to rain.
Durham, no one said it is the Yankees god given right but their are much better, harder teams out there that the Yankees will have tough games against. You need to beat the teams that the Yankees are losing against. Please don’t tell me that no one looked back at the end of last year and said, “if we had only one a few games in April”. I understand that it is a long season, they Yanks will win a lot of games but a slow start is not going to help in October when the bull pen is out of gas, the pitching is tired and the players are banged up.
Darth daddy -
I’m not one of the ones who is panicking. I realize they’re going to come around. Just saying it was my impression that Giambi seems to be pressing his last couple of games.
And the Giambino is batting .056. 1 hit. That’s not typical for Giambi is all I’m saying.
Doreen…I know he didnt, but its such a non issue, I figured Id try and make it one.
I was wondering, does Cone smoke alot of weed because he is shot…its like he’s in another world, it takes him at least a good 10 seconds to respond to the other announcers most of the time, its hysterical….
Kenny- “So Dave, you must have been a huge royals fan growing up, you probably never imagined youd play for the rival yankees”
Dave- ” ”
Kenny- “um Dave, did you ever imagine yourself playing for the yankees grwoing up as a royals fan?”
Dave- ” Huh, oh, uh, no never.”
Hugh -
To me, Cone always looks like he’s in pain. But I do like his commentary. It might be better to pair him up with someone other than Kenny Singleton, though, because the both of them are on the “laid back” side – neither gets too excited about anything.
One thing I have noticed is how quickly the games are being played. The Yankees are usually involved in longer games because they work the pitchers and work the count. That way they get these strong starters out of the game and get into the bullpen. Too many hitters are swinging at first pitches and not working the count. They have to get back to those long at bats.
I definitely did not look back and say “if we had only won a few more games”. For the most part, the team that wins the World Series is the team that gets hot at the end of the season. Thats why I was actually confident going into the playoffs playing .700 ball. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for us but I dont blame it on games lost in April. I blame it on starting pitching which is not an issue at this time.
There are plenty of slow starts in our history that have worked out in our favor. Most recently, 1998. They went on to win 100 plus games.
Fran, you are totally right. if cano swings at the first pitch one more time i am going to freak out! funny thing is though, Jeter does the SAME thing!
I have tickets to see SWB vs Durham tomorrow and that is the only reason I was happy they sent Duncan down. I havent been able to see him in a game, should be fun.
Giambi has been horrible for quite some time. I really dont see how anyone can give him the benefit of the doubt at this point….the guy can only hit when he is on steroids.
Sara – I agree about Cano. He should not be in the #2 hole. But if he is he has got to be told that if Damon is on take a few pitches. The Yanks have no stolen bases because the runners are not getting a chance. They get on and the next batter swings at the first pitch and hits into a DP.
fyi….looks like the indians signed carmona to an extension. i bet this means CC will definitely be gone, no?
http://mlbfleecefactor.com/200.....extension/
Fran -
I agree. I used to complain that Yankees games were too long. Be careful what you wish for, right????
Maybe they’re running into too many pitchers lately who’ve been able to get 0-1 or 0-2 counts? But I long for the days of 3-2 counts, fouling off another 3 pitches, and then whatever. Because whether they got a hit, a walk or an out, they saw a lot of pitches and tired the guy out.
Let’s hope for an “unmanageable 3 hours and 45 minutes” tonight, okay?
Durham,
The Yanks ended up 2 games out of first last year. They went 9 and 14 in April. They only won 2 series that month. i don’t know, but things might have been different had they just won a few more games in April.
Anyway, the past is the past. let’s hope yanks turn it around quicker this year!
I really like the name Fausto…..I wish I had a cool name like that.
thansk for letting me share
“Someone posted late last night that they were tired of hearing post-game interviews with the Yankees giving credit to the opposing team’s pitching.”
Not only that, but I am tired of hearing Ken Singleton say that a Yankee batter is starting to come around when getting a single after going 0-14.
alex, godzirra and bob digi are the only guys who are hitting…take those 3 out of the line up and the yankees are hitting around 180 as a team.
Doreen – It is not often that I think Michael Kay should be quoted, however this is the one time I totally agree!
as a NYY fan since 1957, i have endured many trials and tribulations. no matter how bad it seems to get, i merely have to think one thing to myself – at least it’s not 1965!
Hugh
Cone: “Oh wow man, did you see that?”
Russell you are right, he said that about Cano last night…ummm when the heck did he see that? when Cano grounded into two double plays? Ridiculous!
“Giambi has been horrible for quite some time. I really dont see how anyone can give him the benefit of the doubt at this point….the guy can only hit when he is on steroids.”
I disagree with this. He doesn’t look like he has lost velocity on his SWING and roids don’t affect your eyesight. If you watch Giambi, he is just flat out not hitting the ball on the screws.
How much more do I have to endure of him swinging over a changeup?
John…bwhahahahahaha
Cone- “Dude, Im hungry, can we get a pizza deleivered to the booth?”
That’s exactly what I was referring to, Sara. It was a good hit for Cano but to look for signs in a single at bat is ridiculous. Even saying “sometimes it just takes one hit to pull you out of a slump” makes me cringe a little bit. But that is at least a bit understandable.
Cano did have a nice hit but he grounded into two DP’s. Yanks problem right now isn’t exactly hitting, it is TIMELY hitting! YOU CAN NOT STRAND A LEADOFF DOUBLE!!!! YOU JUST CAN’T!
A lot of you are going to be in for a long season if you psychoanalyze every Yankee game as if it’s the end all be all.
Right now in the AL there are only 3 teams without at least 4 losses. The White Sox, Royals, and Orioles. I think it’s more than safe to say that those three team aren’t contenders.
As I said earlier in the week can we at least wait until, I don’t know, midseason before we start to DFA half the lineup and every pitcher not named Wang and Pettitte?
The Yankees will eventually start scoring runs as long as the pitching holds up they will be in very good shape.
Russ,
I dont think that steroids affect ones eyesight, but with Giambi I dont think its a coincidence that when he is on jusice, he hits and when he isnt, he is useless.
ray…youre one funny dude
Hugh, no question Giambi looked better juiced. He was also younger and somewhat more agile. I think the years are catching up to him more than anything. I have no doubt that if he put the bat in the right spot balls would be flying like he was on something.
For those of you clamoring for the Yankees to get Rich Harden he’s hurt again, surprise, surprise.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/.....102JH3.DTL
“Yanks problem right now isn’t exactly hitting, it is TIMELY hitting!”
I couldn’t quote how many times the Yankees have left the bases loaded in 9 games so far but I definitely said “YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME” more than once.
Thank you Hugh, you’re far too kind…..
Reading earlier posts SJ is dead on. Nothing is determined after nine games. I think the Red Sox series is just what they need to wake up. Also, take some comfort that no one in the AL is hot right now. No one in our division is getting an early lead (dont hit me with Bmore cause they will lose 90 games this year). There is a lot more balance in the AL now – I think we are going back to where 90 – 92 wins get you in, not 96 or so.
ray, just means you can get him at a cheaper price now than before.
but me personally, i’d still take a chance on Harden, like i wanted them to take a chance on Mark Prior this offseason. Guys who have that ability and raw talent come one in a million.
If the injury means you no longer have to give up an IPK and/or a Horne to get him, then to me its a gamble worth the risk.
SJ I am starting to think that you might be Cashman’s brother. If the Yankees told you they have a nice piece of land in the Everglades for sale, you would be the first one in line to buy it.
Part of being a fan in New york is to yell and scream at the bums. That is tradition and that is the fun of it. Stop trying to quell the masses with you sound reasoning ):. When the Yankees start winning that will happen naturally. We don’t need therapy. We need wins from the bums.
I do like your sound reasoning but you sound like my mother.
Rich Harden is bad news unless we can get him cheap and give him the ole Jon Leiber treatment (let him have surgery and rehab for a full year or more).
The offense will come around, rest assured.
Matsui definitely should never be allowed to go anywhere near the outfield except in dire situations. He looks like a lost puppy out there…strange because he used to be at least decent out there.
Am I the only the one who thinks that bunting a guy over to second is a great idea (instead of constantly grounding into DPs)?
I can’t believe Molina doubles and we can’t even advance the poor guy.
Tip your cap to Greinke…he pitched well, very well.
The tables will turn shortly.
Thank god – I hear Syria has an outstanding young lefty with a killer slider.
Russell i think last night i heard someone say the yanks are 11 for 66 with RISP. but that is nothing new for the Yankees…that has been their way for a long time now. i don’t understand why melky only attempted one bunt last night to try and get molina over to 3.
Russ..he shoudl be..he would fit right in their age wise! maybe he can play left field!
I saw very little of the game last night – thankfuly. But i did see Matsui go back on the ball that was hit off Kennedy. Any competent left fielder should catch the ball and save Kennedy a run or two. It doesn’t work now, not with Posada and Jeter out of the lineup, but would we possible see a Gardner in CF and Melky in LF alignment. One of Damon, Giambi or Matsui sits, but so be it.
Bill Buckner – Maybe it is an attempt to infiltrate Syria to get close to Iran to get the inside track on Yu Darvish who is half Iranian. Those democrats always thinking!!!
bill buckner – ha.
Turntwo,
I can’t see Billy Beane just getting rid of Harden for the sake of getting rid of him. He will not trade Harden until/unless Harden establishes himself again and ups his trade value.
I would have to see Harden completely healthy for at least a year and a half before I would even consider trading for him. His injury history is too extensive for my tastes.
Id like a shot at first base for the yankees…there is no doubt in my mind that I could produce more offensively than any one they have put their thus far.
“Russell i think last night i heard someone say the yanks are 11 for 66 with RISP. but that is nothing new for the Yankees”
True, but part of that is because they typically get more men in scoring position than everyone else – which is a good problem to have.
Who knows what they were thinking with Melky… perhaps they didn’t want him to pop the ball up again?
there*
You guys are all retards….seriously. Screaming and yelling about different players when it’s a COLLECTIVE team effort is ridiculous. I bet once Damon, Giambi hit and the young pitchers pitch well and the Yankees start to win, you all will shut your mouths and claim you never complained.
It’s 9 games into the season, save yourself the stress and anxiety and relax a little kids.
A quote from Edgar Renteria on getting booed at Fenway:
“When they boo you, you’ve done something good,” Renteria said. “Bad players, they never boo you.”
Do you guys think Farnsworth thinks the same thing???
rudy, i think every player on the yankees has gotten pretty much bashed equally
That’s not true. Certain players are continuously bashed. The only thing that we know so far in the season is that:
1) Matsui cannot play left field.
2) Farnsworth is garbage, which we all knew already.
That’s it. No need to bash other players when everyone on the team isn’t hitting. It’s easy to find scapegoats when the team itself isn’t doing well and that’s what the majority of the people are doing.
well Matsui looks horrible in left and Farnsworth is garbage, although i don’t think that he was horrible last night..he could have given up 20 runs and it wouldn’t have mattered. I also think that everyone has been saying that ALL of the yankee bats need to come alive..Damon, Giambi, Cano everyone.
Russell NY:
“I am tired of hearing Ken Singleton say that a Yankee batter is starting to come around when getting a single after going 0-14.”
You can’t break out of a slump without getting the first hit. Thinking that you’re 1 for 1 puts you in a much better state of mind than thinking that you’re 0 for 16.
Gotta keep that PMA
I understand that Sara, you’re one of the reasonable Yankee fans. There are some people on this blog who are calling to exile these players already. Talk about radical and extremists fans.
sox fans were booing renteria because when he played ss for boston in 2005, he was hideous. people around here took to calling him “edgah rentanerrah” (edgar rent-an-error). they boo him because he was awful here, and they boo him (i think) to display a wider sense of frustration that, since nomah gahciapahrah got traded, theo hasnt been able to find a shortstop that can field acceptably well and hit acceptably well at the same time. salt in the wound is that since he left boston, edgah’s put his career back together.
farnsworth, yankees fans boo because he sucks now and he probably always will. i guess it’s also to display a wider sense of frustration that we havent had a decent bullpen since 2000.
also, i find it unbelievable that farnsworth is even uglier this year than he was last year. i thought the shaved head + rec specs were a bad combination, but wow: the weird haircut + rec specs are even worse. ladies, am i right?
What else is Singleton supposed to say?
“Oh man he got a single, but after that 0-14 slump, he’s got a long way to go”
Singleton has actually played the game of baseball at a MLB baseball level. He knows that one hit can make all the difference to a good hitter getting out of a 0-14 slide. I’m not quite sure what else he’s supposed to say.
Accentuate the positive.
How ’bout Bruney and Traber last night?? And ODorf 2 days ago.
Three reliable arms? Could it be?
That’s a positive.
what i see now, out of baseball, has given me new insight in regards to why football is so popular. betting on baseball is so much more difficult.
