A few milestones en route to Boston

Peter Abraham
April
11

A few notes from tonight:

A-Rod now has 1,508 RBI, passing Mickey Mantle for 46th place all-time. He has 520 home runs, one short of tying Willie McCovey and Ted Williams for 15th place.

Andy Pettitte has 165 wins as a Yankees, passing Mel Stottlemyre for sixth place in team history. “My old friend,” Pettitte said. “That makes me feel good.”

The three home runs tonight were half as many a sthey had over the first nine games of the season. The 12 hits tonight were a season high.

Now the Yankees (5-5) face the Red Sox (5-5), weather permitting. The old rivals are tied for second behind the shocking Orioles.

Early flight to Boston tomorrow, American Airlines permitting. I’ll blog at you somewhere along the way. Sam Borden and I will be at Fenway this weekend with wall-to-wall coverage.

This continues to be the best blog on the Web.

Here’s betting that Alex easily surpasses Mike Schmidt (548) and knocks on the door of Reggie Jackson (563) and Rafael Palmeiro (569) this year. Passing Palmeiro will put A-Rod in 10th place all-time….

  2. Ramon2

    WE ARE CURSED !!!!!!!!

  3. Corey

i live in Rhode Island (Providence area)…weather isnt projected to be too good this weekend…ill be utterly disappointed if this entire weekend is rained out

  4. Bob

The radar looks pretty ugly right now. Unless that storm somehow dissipates, it doesn’t look like there will be any baseball in New England this weekend.

  5. MikeEff- Shelley, Every Day

well it was supposed to rain all week in ny the first week and yet we got all the games in with only the delay of game one. no need to worry about something we can’t do anything about.

  6. MikeEff- Bring Shelley Back

    oh and BTW

  7. Josh

weather not looking good for tomorrow.. but honestly, i wouldnt mind a rainout, the yankees need a day off

  8. Bob

Rainouts may actually be the best thing to happen right now, because Posada and Jeter might be healthy by the next game. It also means the Joba and Mo show will be rested.

  9. MikeEff -Bring Shelley Back

actually you have a good point, we sure could use a day off

mariano has pitched 4 innings for the year.. joba 6, they are not exxactly being over used.

Girardi is going to be a great manager.. The yanks have used 6 rookies in games already the most in baseball; ohlendorf, hughes, joba, kennedy, the AG, and Albadejo…

yea they are old and washed up; when Melancon and others come up and they ship out Kyle it will be even better.

Molina is a godsend, if he hits 250 he is a bargain.. he can field better then Jorge…

Melky looking good, he had 7 HR’s last yr. if he can hit 20 he is a good good ballplayer…

    Pete,

American Airlines to Boston is about as much of a sure thing as Pavano making 1 start this season.

  12. Matt (In Toronto)

How great would it be to see A-Rod pass Ted Williams on the all-time HR list at Fenway? Go Yanks!

  13. Dylan

The weather won’t be as bad as everyone is making it out to be. The only issue will be Saturday. Friday nights start time will probably be delayed an hour or two, but they will be able to get the game in anytime after 7 or 8pm. Sunday night is fine. The worst case scenario is that Saturdays game is called and they play a double-header in June.

Pete, I read in the NYT this morning that Alan Horne was hurt pitching last night. Is there any update on his condition? Thanks, Jerry

  15. crawdaddie

Melancon is having difficulties down in Tampa and is giving up homeruns and walks in his brief outings.

Horne has injured his right bicep. He’s scheduled for an MRI to determine the extent of this injury. Let’s hope it’s a strain and not a tear.

  16. Manimal

    Welcome to Massachusetts Pete!

    Peter:

Out of curiosity, is the Boston visitor’s clubhouse and it’s accomodations as small as what’s been said ? Please inform.

  18. OldYanksFan

    Chances of Rain at Fenway:
    Tonight: 60%
    Tomorrow: 70%
    Sunday: 20%

I think we will get in at least 2 games.
Sunday is an ESPN ‘Special’ at 8PM.
If Saturday is rained out, does anyone have any idea of the odds of playing a day/night DH on Sunday?
    Seems to make sense.

  19. John in Ohio

Sam Borden may be covering the series by himself if you’re depending on American Airlines to get to Boston.

Seriously, the airlines don’t even FAKE customer service anymore. They’re as boldly ridiculous as the oil companies.

  20. Drew

    That should be 1,510 Pete.

  21. Mark Alan

Here’s Alex, from the ESPN.com piece:

“The good thing about passing guys like Murcer and Mantle is that I’m passing them and they’re not passing me,” Rodriguez said. “That means I’m still wearing pinstripes.”

It’s almost as if he’s still pinching himself
