A few numbers to chew on

Posted by: Peter Abraham - Posted in Misc on Apr 12, 2008 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jason Giambi and David Ortiz this season: 5 of 60, 12 strikeouts, two home runs.

Alberto Gonzalez looks a lot more comfortable at the plate this season than he did last September. I know it’s only three games but he’s 3 for 8, two doubles, two sacrifices and only one strikeout.

Jose Molina has hit safely in all seven games he has started. He’s 5 for 13 with four doubles on the road trip.

Hideki Matsui has hit safely in 9 of the 11 games.

If you’re interested, I’m scheduled to do an ESPN News spot at 1:50 p.m.

    Pete,
Seems like this blog has helped you get a lot more notice from other media outlets. Good for you and all your hard work.

“Jesus Montero at Charleston: .368/.400/.605. two homers, three doubles, nine RBI in 38 at-bats. He’s not going to be a RiverDog for long if this keeps up.”

He’s really good at hitting. Looks like he’s going to be a monster.

” Hideki Matsui has hit safely in 9 of the 11 games.”

I can’t believe this considering how many people were ready to trade him for Noah Lowry.

  4. Phil Franchise 5.00 ERA not good April 12th, 2008 at 12:37 pm

    I’ll be watching

Here’s a number for you, from Replacement Level Yankees Weblog. Not that it means too much yet, considering that Shelley Duncan is at +137. But something to think about.

Defensive runs saved above average per 162 games.

    Jeter -54
    Gonzalez +52

  6. Phil Franchise 5.00 ERA not good April 12th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

    I’ll be watching.

“Not that it means too much yet, considering that Shelley Duncan is at +137. But something to think about.”

It doesn’t mean anything yet. Jeter played what…six games in the field? And Gonzo has 3?

from peter a’s article today- “Ortiz and Ramirez were 0 for 6 with three strikeouts last night. Wang set up the cornerstones of the Boston offense, pushing them off the plate with hard four-seam fastballs then working outside with his sinker.

“Make them move their feet,” said Wang, repeating the advice of pitching coach Dave Eiland.”

wow, i’ve been waiting to hear these words for years. now if mussina uses the same philosophy and gets a few red sox feet dancing, i’ll become an instant eiland fan.

Nice gig Pete. Will watch for it.

The trolls weren’t here after last night’s domination, but I found them at the power rankings at espn.com.

Just ignore the fact that the Mets are 5 places ahead of us, read the comments from the readers.

Power ranking blurb said the Yankees might have the best bullpen combo in Mo & Joba. For entertainment purposes only, read the comments. More than one person actually said that Okajima’s better than Joba!

tug your ear to say hello

  13. mel April 12th, 2008 at 12:54 pm

A lot of time and energy was spent debating aceness here last night.

How did these two aces do last night? Oswalt & Sabathia?

From a few blog posts back:

    Joba, Wang, Hughes, Horne, Kennedy.

Man… how’s that rotation look over the next few years?

Only thing missing is a lefty. I do like the mix of speeds/styles that type of rotation throws at you.

  15. mel April 12th, 2008 at 12:55 pm

    jay,

    ala Carol Burnett!

  16. Jeff April 12th, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Pete as long as you never do the garbage that is Loud Mouths or wheel house on SNY your good to go…

Are those shows tabloid reactionary garbage or what?

  17. mel April 12th, 2008 at 1:03 pm

They just promo’ed the “beat writer for the Yankees”.

  18. cool on your island April 12th, 2008 at 1:11 pm

“tug your ear when you say hello”

And when you sign off give the hang loose sign and say “Go Yanks!”

ESPN will never ask you back, but still…

  19. Marc April 12th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

I said it when we signed Molina this off-season and I’ll say it again. He may not be a big name. And he may not put up big numbers but having a competent backup catcher that can come in and ease some of the burden on Posada over the course of the season without making all the fans collectively cringe when they see his name in the lineup is a big deal. I think come the end of the season he’ll be really appreciated. I think his signing was a very important one as he could have easily been starting on many other teams.

  20. Manimal April 12th, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Im watching now!!!! In HD goodness. The guy from the Pulse said “We will ask 2 beat writers next..”

  21. jon April 12th, 2008 at 1:52 pm

Hello small sample size! Did the guy from waswatching.com guest-write this post?

  22. trisha - count on me for an alternate route April 12th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Wish he had said “the Pulse”. I may have tuned in too late.

NO NEW YORK FEED WRITER THEY SAID. WTF?????

  23. Bill from NJ April 12th, 2008 at 1:54 pm

  24. kj April 12th, 2008 at 1:55 pm

  25. Dewey April 12th, 2008 at 1:58 pm

good job, Pete!! I hope the weather holds up for a couple more hours.

  26. Chris in PA April 12th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

    Great job Pete.

There were seriously reports that Pettite took steroids instead of HGH? Some people need to head back to journalism school, it seems.

  27. Manimal April 12th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

No ear tug but great job none the less.

  28. Fatty McGee April 12th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

That Giambi/Ortiz stat is surprising, but as a Yankee fan, I will reluctantly admit that the Giambi numbers are pretty much par for the course the past few years.

  29. DLev April 12th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Actually, Jeter has about 1800 games we can go on. But I’m willing to wait another week on AG.

  30. ralphrc April 13th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Saw your ESPN spot. Good report and looked very natural in front of camera.
