Chien-Ming Wang used his versatility to dominate the Red Sox last night.
Derek Jeter remains out and that’s not changing this weekend. This notebok also has updates on Andy Pettitte, a tabloid tall tale and other news.
Sam Borden wonders what the Yankees will be like once Jeter and Jorge Posada aren’t the shortstop and catcher. It’s certainly not clear.
Back later with the lineups. Clubhouse opens at 12:30.

4th !....now can we cut this out ?..Yankees taking number 2 in this WEEKEND SWEEP of the BoSux…..GO YANKEES, ALL !
Does anyone think they should add another tier of dl? Like they have in the minors a 7 day?
Look no further than Jeter’s dl situation. It seems like it isn’t a 15 day variety, but more of 7 days.
Should they add it? Would they ever consider it?
Jennifer,
If they did that, you would have over 200, instead of the present 100, guys on the DL lol.
Not all these players in the game are like Jeter, dying to play.
Some, if they have the slightest pain, look for the DL.
I’d keep the rules as they are. Right now, if they have to DL Jeter, they can make it retroactive to when he got hurt, since he hasn’t played a game since the injury.
Consider these numbers for Wang and tell me he’s not an ace: Since joining the Yankees, he has made 83 starts. He has pitched at least six innings in 69 of those games, going 48-10. In 41 games, he has pitched seven or more innings, going 32-3.
From Mark F’s blog.
Any thoughts on the lineup today? Damon will most likely be back in, who sits? Posada’s not ready to catch but he’s starting to hit, Matsui’s looking good. Giambi’s obviously in…
in case they’re looking, let me be the first to say
Happy Birthday Rebecca and SOS
Line up is set. Cano will sit today.
How many pitcher have become true “Ace’s†after their first 2 1/2 seasons in the majors?
Not many as far as I know.
There’s just not that many pitchers who have risen to this now mythical status of “Ace†in less than three full seasons. Pitching is just too difficult to master that quickly.
But that’s all the experience Wang has – he has around 2 1/2 season’s under his belt. He is not a finished product.
But people who knock Wang just don’t admit that there’s a good chance any pitcher just entering their 4th season could continue to grow and get better.
A quick run down of current pitchers who would be considered ace’s – have these pitcher’s achieved that ace status within their first three years?
Santana – no
Beckett – no
Peavy – no
Sabbathia – no
Halladay – no
Roy Oswalt – probably
Brandon Webb – borderline within 3 years
Verlander – borderline. Needs another very good year IMO to solidify that status.
None of those pitchers were finished products after 3 years.
Wang isn’t either. And every indicator we’ve seen this year suggests he is going to continue to grow this year and potentially get to that next level.
rgb,
if Cano is sitting, who is playing 2b?
I say this every time we talk about pitching: Wang is the best pitcher in the majors. I don’t care what Santana or Beckett’s stats are. I don’t care how many Cy Youngs they have. Chien-Ming Wang is, in my opinion, the best Major League pitcher. He has the nastiest sinker (arguably) in the majors, with the ability to throw many different secondary pitches and he is young enough to keep getting better.
Plus, he plays for the Yankees. Strikeouts or not, I take Wang > all.
Please don’t say Wilson.
Can Morgan play second?
jennifer,
I will be shocked if Cano gets a day off in the near future unless he’s injured. They just don’t have anybody who has been tried and tested to be an acceptable 2b backup.
We’ll see…
Oh someone said he was off. He really could use one to clear his head.
Peter :
Just how tight is it in the cramped visitor’s clubhouse in Boston ? Elbow room or less ?
As much as every one bashes Betemit, he can spot start at 2nd.
I do not see that happening and Cano will start at 2nd, unless Girardi wants to give him a jolt and move him out of his comfort zone for his undisciplined hacking last few days.
From the Globe

“You know what you’re going to get with him,” Youkilis said. “Sinker-slider guy. He got ahead, threw strikes. One of those nights balls weren’t falling in, we didn’t get any breaks.”————-
Amazing that he doesn’t give any credit to Wang. In fact, they did not know what they were getting, with lots more four-seamers.
Maybe it wasn’t falling in because you weren’t getting good swings on him? The guy is a huge jerk.
No way Cano sits today. Hopefully he will be moved down in the order and Melky will bat second after Damon. I am assuming Posada or Matsui will be DHing…I would prefer Matsui because he has been lighting it up. At the same time Posada seems like he’s coming around but maybe another full day off will help his shoulder.
I’ve read at least 5 articles on the game from different sources, I’ve yet to see a Red Sox quote giving Wang any credit. Not a hint of it.
U&I that really shouldn’t surprise us. But for some reason it does. That was one of the most dominating pitching performances I’ve seen in a while.
U & I
I noticed that as well. The line from the RS is that they hit the ball hard yadda yadda. Classy as always.
Meanwhile Ortiz is not talking to reporters. I can’t think of anyone who would have less of a beef with his treatment by the media than David Ortiz.
Well, I am so happy that Wang had a great performance last night.
I was listening to Russo this morning(I know…why?) and he can’t even mutter Wang and Ace in the same sentence. Whatever, Wang is our Ace.
Meanwhile, Jose Molina has been freaking fantabulous for us.
I hope Robbie can pull his head out of his ass soon.
I am also gonna be hoping we see another good performance from Mussina today.
Go Yanks!
For those having birthdays today-Happy Birthday.
Oh wait-Cano is sitting today? Oy
SA Yeah I started to listen to his show and knew he was leading up to the word BUT. And as soon as he uttered it, click!
abe,
if hitters want to convince themselves that they know what Wang’s going to throw and wait for luck rather than adjusting to Wang’s new arsenal…
all the better. let them get outs for the rest of the season and keep scratching their heads.
“Oh wait-Cano is sitting today? Oy”
This rgb person says so. No one’s corroborated, and I don’t see the lineup posted anywhere.
Jennifer-yeah, I had to turn off my radio after listening to some of the crap spewing from Russo’s mouth. lol..
One would think he could be a bit positive but no…
Imagine is Wang had a bad outing? Good lord.
Whatever!
S.A
thats right, Wang is the Yanks ace (#1 starter)
does it matter if the open public accepts Wang as an ace? Not in the slightest.
Cris Carter (NFL) used to say “All I do is score TD”. Nobody really considered him a top wide receiver but he just went out and scored.
All Wang does is throw quality starts and win games. Just win baby!
**is=if
Last night’s beauty of a pitching performance should go a long way in erasing doubts of Chien-Ming Wang.
At the same time, he had a finger issue on his pitching hand late last season plus going into the Cleveland ALDS series and to his credit, never opted out from taking his turn.
whozat-yeah I just realized that. No line-ups listed anywhere.
One big difference with the Yankee pitching so far this season has been location. Eiland is preaching and the Yankee pitchers are listening by throwing inside. The hitters, especially Ortiz and Manny, would go to bat expecting outside pitches. That is not happening any more. Now they have to think while they are up there hitting.
“One big difference with the Yankee pitching so far this season has been location. Eiland is preaching and the Yankee pitchers are listening by throwing inside.”
Yeah, the broadcast team has been talking about that in most games that Moose or Wang pitch. Is Leiter still doing games with them? Cone is interesting too, but I really like Leiter’s style.
Wang cited “moving the batters’ feet” as one of the key differences in his performance last night.
Dave Eiland noticed in that inning Wang gave up the home run that Wang had changed the grip on his two seamer slightly.
Wang started gripping the ball off to the side. That prevented him from getting on top of the ball – that’s why his pitches were up in the zone and hence the fly balls.
Adjustment made and he was dominant afterwards again.
Eiland just picked that up from the bench. He’s outstanding.
“Joba, Wang, Hughes, Horne, Kennedy.
Man…. how’s that rotation look over the next few years?
Only thing missing is a lefty. I do like the mix of speeds/styles that type of rotation throws at you.
There is a lesson to be learned here for Joba. One that will make him the next Yankee ace. Forget those K’s until two strikes. It’s more important to drop the mph and save the pitching arm with sinkers than to be egged on by us raving fans.
Youkilis said “Sinker-slider guy. He got ahead, threw strikes. One of those nights balls weren’t falling in, we didn’t get any breaks.â€
lmao They were great, it’s just those damn balls that wouldn’t fall.
“Russo this morning(I know…why?) and he can’t even mutter Wang and Ace in the same sentence.”
He sounds more brainless each day. Let’s ship him off to Frisco.
“Meanwhile Ortiz is not talking to reporters. I can’t think of anyone who would have less of a beef with his treatment by the media than David Ortiz.”
Hey, I don’t talk to reporters either.
