Chamberlain returns to Nebraska

The Daily News reported today that Joba Chamberlain is headed back to Nebraska to attend to his father Harlan, who has taken ill.
Joe Girardi did not make this information public last night despite knowing about it. While Harlan Chamberlain’s medical condition is certainly a private matter, a player leaving the team is not. It would have been appropriate to inform fans that Chamberlain had left the team for family reasons and leave it at that.
Here’s wishing Mr. Chamberlain well. He has willingly shared his son and his story with the public and enjoyed himself along the way. Hopefully we’ll see him at a game again before too long.

Agreed Pete. It was not appropriate of the News to share the information with us. That said prayers are with Joba and his father.
Not to turn it back to a baseball issue but it seems as though he will be away from the team for a few days at least, does bearvment leave apply to an ill family memmber?

Pete as far as I read he did not leave the team until AFTER the game. I dont think Joe needs to inform the media of this right after the game he was there for the game. I dont think Joe Giardi needed to tell the media last night. Today would be the apropriate time to say he was not available as he left the team to be with his father. It made no difference last night.

Pete, could you be any more bitter lately? Last night slamming the rookie pitchers who everyone under the sun knew would have growing pains, and then now complaining Girardi doesnt inform you at first chance that a players father is ill, let these guys breathe a little bit
I think you might be misinterpreting what Pete wrote. I think he was referring to the daily news sharing too much inforamtion.

Seems like Pete is more mad about not being the party to find out that Chamberlain left, because Girardi clearly told the Daily News guys. Maybe I’m wrong, but…
It says a source. I don’t believe Joe G would give the Daily News all that inforamtion. Clearly someone overheard something, than called the hospital for information.

In a short amount of time, Harlan has become a player’s parent we always enjoy seeing (similar to Mr. & Mrs. Jeter). Here’s hoping he gets well soon and we see him at the stadium again quickly!

Under the circumstances, I do not think Joe was obliged to tell anyone anything. I think a little bit of compassion is what is needed not frustration of not getting a scoop.
that’s really damn sad. when i was reading about it this morning i actually almost choked up reading that they told joba after the game that his dad collapsed and he just broke down. jeez. Best wishes, Mr. Chamberlain, get well soon.
These are the moments in life you realize the people you love and care about are a million times more important than your job. Mr. Chamberlain and all of his family are in my prayers.
This is a baseball game. They owe us the 27 outs between the white lines and nothing more. Your sense of entitlement is unfounded and alarming as it had absolutely NO bearing on last nights game.
I’m praying for the Chamberlains. Family illness puts baseball games in perspective.
Brian, reading the account did make me cry. It again emphasizes the human side of baseball players, something that fans often forget about when they are screaming bloody murder about wanting someone’s head because they haven’t been hitting well, or pitching well.
On top of it, we have all come to know Joba’s dad in a pretty personal way, and Joba is such a loveable guy that it makes it all the more real to us. And baseball fans always think that players are like family members anyway.

Pete - thanks for yet another disingenuous opinion. So far, you’ve lectured fans, the US Congress, the team, and Joe Girardi on how to do their jobs and how to behave.

why does Girardi have an obligation to report player moves to the press? if this happenned before last nite’s game, witholding the info from the Red Sox was the smart move. i’d rather have the manager do that - no-brainer.

Why would Girardi tell the media? So they can go posting it everywhere and calling his family trying to get information that is none of there business. Joba deserves this time to himself so he can visit his dad in quiet. Obviously it was going to get out sooner or later but people do not need to know right away, would anyone in the media want there information out in the public if it was someone in there family?
Gimme a break Pete. Joba’s a kid, his Dad is in critical condition. The media isn’t entitled to everything. No wonder everyone hated NY media. Let’s leave it at that.

I’m not quite sure what to think of Pete’s article. I don’t think he meant it as negatively as some posters are taking it…atleast I’m hoping not. Since Chamberlain didn’t leave the team until after the game what difference did it make during the game.
Had Joba not pitched because of this it probably would have been Girardi’s choice. And even if Joba said he couldn’t and needed to leave before the game was over, who can blame him…family first no matter what.
Regardless, here’s wishing Harlan best of luck and a speedy recovery. Joba and the rest of his family will be in all or our thoughts.

Wish you be very good as those days that we saw you on TV. It is great to see you make a mist when Chamberlain’s pitching well. Your story inspires everyone within the member of baseball, even more human being.
None of your business. Least of all last night while he was still upset about it. Please show some respect for his family’s privacy. For the record, the Daily News was way out of line.
The last thing Joba needed (pete) was to have microphones in his face while dealing with his dad’s medical issues and trying to get to him as fast as he can. Mr C. was in critical condition which can go either way. Joe Girardi made the right call. GO JOE!!
