It was painful to watch the Sox run all over Jorge when they knew he couldn't throw. This just rekindled my old anger that NOBODY bunted against Schilling in the Bloody Sock game in 2004. If your opponent puts someone out there with a glaring weakness, you are not obliged to stay away from it.

"'It’s great to see the fans and media turn against a twenty-one-year-old pitcher (the youngest pitcher in the league) after three starts. Way to go, guys."

Keep calling such people out; they deserve it. And they'll be the first ones all over Hughes' xxx when he finds his rhythm. As for the media, don't bother.

Hughes 9.00

Sorry your mets have no pitching future, and sorry you can't evaluate pitchers. Which is why you're in for a decade of heartbreak:

Hughes
Chamberlain
Betances
Garcia
Brackman
Heredia
Vizcaino
McCutchen
Horne
Kennedy
Reyes
Melancon
Sanchez
Cox
Whelan

.....eat your heart out.
Go Yanks

Good to know the fans and media are turning against a 21-year-old pitcher (the youngest pitcher in the league) after three starts. Way to go, guys.

Louise,

You have to differentiate between cold weather in October, after you've been pitching all season, and cold weather in April. That's why Rivera has such trouble in April in the cold. He doesn't even pick up a baseball in the offseason, and his arm isn't warmed up.

Even pitchers who do some offseason throwing may encounter issues in cold weather - in April. In October, you've been pitching for six straight months.

Another thing: I am tired of the media and their hyperbolisms. No one will respect a writer who trumpets Hughes as an ace one day and then says he's not the goods the next, on a start-to-start basis. Ditto for anxious fans who don't understand this whole season is a work in progress, and a very exciting one, at that. It's called perspective, which comes with a framework of knowledge.

What would you rather see? Phil Hughes taking his lumps with flashes and stretches of mastery, or Johan Santana giving up bombs as his arm continues to wear down? And when he pitches a gem, you know that the price was a bare cupboard? No thanks, I'll stick with the kids and cheer them on as they make their way up the ladder.

Not only should Joe have had Damon bunt, but Joe should have started Cabrera. Why make your outfield old and immobile for Hughes' first start at Fenway? And why bench a guy whose OBP has been great so far, especially when your facing a pitcher who can't throw strikes? I can not count how many times I groaned watching our big swingers get themselves out against a vulnerable pitcher in a winnable game, despite our issues within.

As for Hughes, it certainly didn't help his cause when Molina threw the ball into center field to get his first inning off to a shaky start. I'm not overly concerned with Phil Hughes, he's talented and will learn to expand his repertoire, and his command was probably iffy because of adrenaline. I would like to see the changeup come out of hiding a little more.

What's maddening are these older players constantly swinging for the seats, apparently choosing to ignore that the opposing pitcher surrenders hits once you get him into a hitter's count, which is how we torched him last season. Why do these guys ignore this and swing? Very frustrating.
