Good morning, ladies and gentlemen

Peter Abraham
April
17

Bob Sheppard announced his first game at Yankee Stadium on April 17, 1951. Fittingly, it was a Red Sox-Yankees game.

The first batter he announced was Dom DiMagggio. Ted Williams hit cleanup for the Sox. Boston also had Walt Dropo, Bobby Doerr and Lou Boudreau in the lineup that day.

The Yankees lineup:

Jackie Jensen LF
Phil Ruzzuto SS
Mickey Mantle RF
Joe DiMaggio CF
Yogi Berra C
Johnny Mize 1B
Billy Johnson 3B
Jerry Coleman 2B
Vic Raschi R

Yankee Stadium just isn’t the same without him. Get well soon, sir.

It definitely is not the same. I can’t stand how Jim Hall or whatever the backup guy’s name is obviously tries do hard to sound just like him. I’m glad we get a taste of Bob Sheppard a couple times a game though with Jeter’s recording. Hope he comes back soon.

  2. Derek

Billy Crystal should have filled in for Bob while he was sick. He does the best impression of him I have ever heard.

  3. SJ44

I have a friend of mine who does an unbelievable impression of Bob Sheppard.

So good, he has left cellphone messages as Sheppard and you have to check yourself before realizing its not him.

That said, its not the him.

    I concur. Get well sir.

Yankee Stadium is not the same without you.

  4. Clay Buchholz stole my laptop (aka Joe)

Remember a few years back (I believe it was Joe DiMaggio Day) when Bob Sheppard announced the starting from 4/17/51. That was really cool to hear!

  5. Brandon (supporting the new movement "Alex being Alex")

^^^ still the funniest SN I’ve ever seen

  6. SJ44

4 HOF in that lineup (Mantle, DiMaggio, Berra and Rizzuto).

Jackie Jensen was an All-American football player as well as a very good baseball player.

3 other guys (Mize, Coleman, and Raschi) who were multiple all star players with multiple championship rings.

    Quite a lineup.

Totally agree Jim Hall needs a new gig or he needs not to do an impression of Bob. Ihave heard Bob Sheppard and let me tell you he is no Bob Sheppard. You would think that someone would tell him or the Yankees brass would have enough tact to say you know what we dont want a Sheppard impersonation.

was that the best yankees outfield ever? dimaggio , mantle, and jensen was later an american league mvp with the red sox. his bat model for kids lasted forever in the late 50’s too. even yankee fans in our neigborhood used it when he was with the red sox. it was that good

i hate parity. i guess growing up in the 50’s and early 60’s as a yankee fan tends to spoil you. but there was sure some great baseball.

  9. Bob Glassberg

And only Yogi, and Coleman still alive

  10. Brian

Hearing Bob Sheppard’s voice is still one of the best parts of the Yankee Stadium experience. It’s not the same without him. I hope he gets well soon.

I’m ok with Hall using Bob’s inflections – I think I’d be rattled during a game to hear a completely different tone through the PA system. Obviously, no one can replace “The Voice,” but I think it’s comforting to have a similar fill-in – kinda reminds you Bob’s not done yet.

When you hear PA announcers at some other stadiums with the WWE-like way they announce the home team players, it makes me ever-more grateful for Bob’s low-key style. Hopefully he has a quick recovery!

  12. Yanksrule57

One of the many things I have been looking forward to my stadium visit later this year was hearing Bob’s announcements.

For those inclined, please include Mr. Sheppard in your prayers for his speedy and full recovery.

  13. Mike S.

That game was Mickey Mantle’s MLB debut.

Exactly two years later, on this date 55 years ago, Mantle hit his famous shot off of Chuck Stobbs at Washington’s Griffith Stadium that cleared the LCF bleachers—the shot that was measured at 565 feet and gave birth to the phrase, “tape-measure home run.”

SJ? Johnny Mize is in the HOF.

  14. pat m in ct

Cut Jim Hall some slack. That’s a legendary voice to follow. Shepherd endorsed him, saying he was the 2nd best announcer.

Talk about a lineup. Forgot that Jensen had been a football player too.

  15. Mike S.

…and so is Coleman, but as a broadcaster.

  16. JMO

That lineup reminds me of a song:

    He started baseball’s famous streak
    that’s got us all aglow,
He’s just a man and not a freak,
    Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio

    Joe, Joe Dimaggio
We want you on our side…

    Please get well Mr. Sheppard.

  17. Baja

Bob Shepard and Scot Muni Iconic New York voices. Any others?

Get well soon Mr. Shepard, it isn’t the same without you.

  18. SMS46

Mr. Sheppard is synonymous w the Stadium in my lifetime. I’ll trade a thousand role calls for 1 more game from the “Voice of God”. Imagine him announcing the Pope this Sunday? “and in CF, #1, Benny XVI.”

Any chance we can get recordings for all the players (like the Captain has done) until Mr. Sheppard returns this summer?

    Get well soon.
