Miguel Tejada admitted to Astros GM Ed Wade that he is actually 33, two years older than listed in his baseball records.

Like many poor kids from Caribbean countries, Tejada was encouraged to lie about his age when he signed with the Oakland A’s in 1993. The interesting thing is that all his legal papers in the United States reflect his actual birthday. (from rotoworld)

  2. Boston Dave April 17th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

that is the BEST commercial, by the way

  3. mel April 17th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

    Too funny.

    Run, Forrest, run!

  4. Boston Dave April 17th, 2008 at 3:15 pm

though one of the misguided YouTube posters actually writes:

“Typical. ESPN, like all other sports networks showing bias to the Yankees.”

are ya kiddin me dude? for real?

  5. murphydog April 17th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

A little Spike Lee (Do the right thing), and a little classic Zeppelin, “Bring It On Home” from Zep II.

    Nice job.

    mel:

I didn’t get the Forest Gump reference… I thought the Sox fan was just supposed to be a dork.

  7. michael April 17th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

great job dan. very cool. a little pro yankee for espn though don’t you think!?

  8. jimmy27 April 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

    Boston Dave,
I have friends that are convinced that ESPN is biased toward the Yanks.
AND that the only reason Jeter is Jeter is becuase of their bias. “If Jeter played in Minnesota no one would know who is”
    I stopped arguing with him.

And if Anything that commercial is anti-Yankee not pro Yankee

  9. V April 17th, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Man, I hope the Yankees dominate tonight – my first game of the season!

  10. Sterling Steiner April 17th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

    Put that on TV now.

  11. Yankeepelotero April 17th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

that is a nice one. Did anybody click on the link where they had the Ortiz trying out Posada’s hat espn commercial? that is so hillarious!!

  12. NYSuperFan April 17th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

    Thats awesome!

  13. saucY April 17th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

i have no speakers. did i miss anything?

  14. grob April 17th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

ESPN has an unhealthy addiction to the Yankees and Red Sox. I can see why eveyone outside of each team’s fan base hates them.

By the way, is that Red Sox dweeb Waldo from Van Halen’s “Hot For Teacher” video??

  15. jimmy27 April 17th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

    Saucy – just some music.

  16. jennifer April 17th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

i can’t watch till I get home

yep, pretty much confirms that Jorge is on the HGH wagon too

Hey, pondering the RF situation approaching at the end of this season…Juan Rivera could be an interesting pickup, either at the deadline or as an FA at the end of the season. Depending how this season goes, of course. He’s a righty bat that performed well in his only full season. Now that he’s back from the broken leg, he really doesn’t have anywhere to play, so he may not be able to rebuild his value much before hitting free agency at the end of the year.

It also depends on a) how bobby looks at the end of the year and b) what kind of deal he wants. Then again…I figure Bobby’s going to be a type A if he does well…If they think Rivera will be able to get back to his healthy form, let Bobby walk for draft picks, sign Rivera as a stop-gap for a year with an option and see if Jackson or Tabata has stepped up by 2010.

    An interesting situation to monitor.

The Ortiz/Posada hat commericail is one of the funniest things I have EVER seen! I laugh out loud each time I see it. It actually makes me think Ortiz has a sense of humor. . and I hate to think any good thoughts about that man – he makes me nervous. . .

  20. michael April 17th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

    jimmy 27,
don’t ya think having 4 rings has something to do with jeter’s being celebrated? it’s just the geography right?

  21. saucY April 17th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

‘ESPN has an unhealthy addiction to the Yankees and Red Sox. I can see why eveyone outside of each team’s fan base hates them.’

this kinda implies that yanks and sox fans actually LIKE espn

  22. S.o.S.27 April 17th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Was the NY on the Pizza made of anchovies? What an awsome idea. I love anchovies!!

  23. jimmy27 April 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

    Michael
I was qouting my Jeter hating friend.
Trying to make the point that there are different perceptions about ESPN bias.

  24. Doreen April 17th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

Liked the commercial. Pretty fun and not very flattering to EITHER side, if you ask me. (Red Sox dim-witted dweeby looking fan walking into an obviously pro-Yankee pizza place in all his regalia; bat-bearing Yankees fans ready to do some damage.) But it was funny. I liked the NY on the pizza!

eh, no it doesn’t, it just means that more people like the Yankees and Red Sox. ESPN (like anything and everything else) is in it for the money. If more people cared about the NHL they would carry the NHL and run (current) commercials with Zamboni’s running over mascots or something

  26. S.o.S.27 April 17th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

“Red Sox dim-witted dweeby looking fan”

Dont all sox fans look like that?

  27. Don Vito A. Bellamo April 17th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

Thanks A.B.K. ! Yankees MASH the Sux tonight 10-2 ! Book it, Dano !!! :-)

  28. mel April 17th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

    murphydog,

LOL. You’re overanalyzing. I wasn’t referring to his mental faculties. Just meant keep running if you want to keep that WS replica ring.

I also just saw the fat man (sorry, his name escapes me)with the briefcase commercial for the first time today. Something tells me he really enjoyed shooting that one.

  29. Doreen April 17th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Now, now, SOS27, don’t be mean.

I thought Bartman was a Cubs fan??

Must be in witness protection in Brooklyn

    ABK,

    Thanks for the lineup.

Speaking of our new favorite 3rd catcher, here’s a blurb about him:

Every Yankees starter on Wednesday had at least one hit and eight drove in a run, including understudy catcher Chad Moeller, who went 3-for-4 to raise his average to .400 since joining New York as a replacement for the injured tandem of Jorge Posada and Jose Molina.

“It doesn’t put a whole lot of pressure on you,” Moeller said. “It’s a nice feeling to know that they have me back there really to catch, and everything else is a true bonus. They like to say it, but normally they don’t really mean it. Here, it’s the truth.”

I have always wondered why most people from New England either have that overbite “Simpsons” look (think the Kennedy clan) or are super pasty white (think a ghost)

    why is this?

  34. Beverly April 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    Too funny!

  35. Jaewon April 17th, 2008 at 3:48 pm

    haha. Amazing

  36. Stan April 17th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

ESPN is the worldwide leader in overhyping rivalries with the Yankees-Red Sox being the fair haired boy of all.
They do the same thing with the NFL or whatever other sport will allow the network to find reason to nurture one.
It’s all about the ratings and nothing but.

  37. SJ44 April 17th, 2008 at 4:09 pm

No reason to look outside for a RF. Just re-sign Abreu.

They can sign him to a fair deal. Mainly, because he wants to stay in NY.

He’s the perfect #3 hitter in the lineup.

A 2 year with an option, or 3 year deal, will get it done.

    He’s worth it.

2010 will be the year of transition in the OF for the Yankees.

IMO, either Gardner, Tabata or Jackson will be in LF to start the 2010 season.

I think Melky is going to be a very good player. I don’t see him losing grip on the CF job. I also think the Yankees will re-sign Abreu.

I don’t see either Damon nor Matsui with the Yankees after next season.

  38. saucY April 17th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

nice, SJ thinks Bobby should be back. as do I! :)

This clip was shot at Carmine’s Pizzeria on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn

Carmine is a great guy and a HUUUUGE Yankee fan. Check it out sometime – Carmine’s is like a museum to all things yankees, but with one of the best slices you’ll ever have. And the rest of the food is absolutely amazing.

(not an ad, just an endorsement – i’m just a customer)

“I don’t see either Damon nor Matsui with the Yankees after next season.”

I wish they’d keep Matsui, but I don’t think we’ll need him after next year. It’s too bad. He is one heck of a hitter. I just wish his fielding hadn’t taken such a hit recently. Before, he was just an “OK” fielder. Now, he’s God awful!

  41. SJ44 April 17th, 2008 at 4:41 pm

That’s a funny spot Dan. Well done!

  42. Nick April 17th, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Unless Damon shows shades of his old self as a leadoff hitter, this will be his final year in New York.
Matsui has always been a run producer and will finish out his last contract year of 2009.
If Brett Gardner continues to progress as expected, he’s the next leadoff hitter and left fielder unless Joe Girardi prefers Melky in LF and Gardner in CF.
For 2009, Gardner as the leadoff man, Matsui as the DH, and Mark Teixeira as the 1st baseman has a nice ring to it.

  43. Racerc03 April 17th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Most likely it will be Damon, I can see Gardner taking his spot in the lineup if he continues to slug in AAA. He will come with better speed, defense, and plate discipline.

  44. dkb April 17th, 2008 at 5:27 pm

My favorite spot at the moment is the AVIS ad running on YES where the new guy comes into the pro-Yankees breakroom and says something like “it’s wicked great to be here. Who wants to rent some cars?” Does anyone have a link to that ad?

  45. Wolf In Pinstripes April 17th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Dan – thanks for sharing that. Awesome stuff. I wish I still lived close to NY so that I could try out Carmine’s joint.

I have to admit, I loved both of the things that murphydog had already mentioned. The “Do the Right Thing” vibe and the inclusion of a great and appropriately-titled Zeppelin tune.

  46. pat m in ct April 17th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Late to post but terrific spot, Dan.
