Preparing for the Pope

The Yankees sent out this photo today of the Stadium as they prepare for the Papal Mass on Sunday. Notice how they’re covering up all ads.
I do believe they are still going to have the Great Subway Race.

will they play “cotton eyed Joe” after communion?
I’ve seen Jesus on the D train a bunch of times.
Maybe the Pope can help bring some good mojo for the rest of the year! Everyone knows that God is a Yankees fan.
Neat perspective of the Stadium. I didn’t realize how oval it is on the ground level.
YMCA with the dragsters all wearing pope hats, anyone?
Mike - I thought Jesus was still catching in low A ball.
Someday they should have a seder at the Stadium. Just because.
Unless the Pope can go 6 and throw 85-100 pitches a mass, he ain’t helpin’ the team! lol
Right now, he’s hurting the team with this Mass because its messed up the schedule bigtime.
Its a wonderful event and the Pope shares the same birthday as me.
But, messin’ with my team isn’t going to make me contribute when the basket is passed.
Wouldn’t it be something if Bob Sheppard could read the first lecture?
So do the people who sit in the bleachers do roll call for each of the Cardinals and not stop until they turn and bless them?
breaking news on arod and roids and max on si
Edwar Ramirez is in Baltimore. Looks like he will be added to the roster and Albie will be sent down.
good thing they are covering the ads, how funny would it be if all the pictures of the pop had the giant bud light sign from the outfield.
Michael Kay is reporting that Edwar Ramirez is at Baltimore and will apparently be replacing Albaladejo on the roster.
They should have Pope mobiles race instead.
SJ - Beat me to the punch. sorry for the repeated news.

anyway we can get this photo in high-res?
I know the guy described as “Max” in that story.
Not friends or anything like that but, he is a well known fitness nut in the area.
He’s never been associated with steroids. At least not that I have heard.
He also said Arod was absolutely against steroid use.
No smoking gun, or so it seems, here.
Joseph Dion read the passage in front of two SI reporters and instantly identified Max.
“That’s gotta be me,” Dion said.
Dion said that Canseco is partially accurate in his portrayal of Max. Yes, Dion is a Canadian-born trainer who knew Canseco during his Toronto Blue Jays days. And it’s true that Dion moved back to Miami, where he was raised, and was introduced to Rodriguez by Canseco in the late ’90s. Dion said he worked with Rodriguez for four years when the current Yankee played for the Seattle Mariners.
But Dion adamantly denies Canseco’s written account of Max as a “fan of steroids” who began working with Rodriguez specifically to juice the young phenom’s body with illicit performance-enhancing drugs.
“That’s really, really funny because I am the one person that hates steroids,” Dion said. “I’m against it 100 percent. And, A-Rod, at the time that I trained him — and this I swear to God — was 100 percent against steroids. He was one of the hardest working guys, and most natural guy, that I’ve met in my life. He hated steroids. We talked about it.”
“I’m hurt in every way because it’s not right and it’s not true,” Dion said. “I don’t know if he is [writing Vindicated] for business or for fame or what.”
Burned! Canseco got called out! That guy is a loser of the largest degree.
Canseco confirmed that dion is max
“Now praying…for your souls…Pope Ben-e-dict…the Sixteenth. Benedict the Sixteenth.”
or an associate close to conseco
Looks like A-Rod’s the one who’ll be ‘vindicated’.
Edwar Ramirez? so what happened to Scott “you’ll be the first guy we call up” Patterson? Havent we already seen what Edwar can do in the majors?
Will the Pope have a number 16 stiched into the back of his robe for the mass?
Think they’ll get any of the parishioners on the Diamondvision for some ‘Papal Trivia’…?
Hey Mike R.
Bob shepherd is a Deacon at St Raymond on long island, heard him once “now please turn to your recessional hymm page 32…32″
Tim:
Are you kidding? That would make my day!
Only in Yankeeland can we start with the thread about the pope and have it turn into a discussion on steroids! LOL
Hopefully he blesses the pitchers mound and keeps his hands off the ball boys
Turn Two, I’m with you. I thought Patterson would be first up. Unless Edwar has put on weight/improved command on his fastball, what are we going to see that’s any different? Unless Patterson has some physical issue, or has lost it in Scranton, it wouldn’t seem to make sense.

The man Jose Canseco identifies as Max in book claims A-Rod never used steroids
Max is a trainer who worked with Canseco in Toronto as well as other athletes
When asked by SI about Max, Canseco said: “Ask him to call me.”

GEE, What a surprise….Canseco is a LIAR !!!

We are edcated fans here. We know the signs. There is no way he could pass out that many communion wafers without some help. Look at his increase in Blessings/Mass ratio.

“Edwar Ramirez? so what happened to Scott “you’ll be the first guy we call up” Patterson? Havent we already seen what Edwar can do in the majors?”
we’re not calling Scott up because it’s just a fill in, he’ll be up a few days then sent back down, we’re not going up and down w/ him.

LOL. It’s like 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon but with steroids and Yankees.
The Pope says mass in Cathedrals.
Yankee Stadium is the Cathedral of Baseball.
Alex Rodriguez plays in Yankee Stadium
Jose Canseco says Alex Rodriguez might have, could have, may have used steroids.
4 degrees!
I bet the Pope pitches better than Moose!
it is a very exciting thing for those going to the mass. I was lucky enough to see Pope John Paul II at Mile High Stadium when I was a teenager back in 1993. It is really a neat thing…and having the Pope standing in our home team’s stadium can’t hurt!!!
Perhaps they don’t want to bring Patterson up for just a few days. Or, perhaps, they’re going with “he has experience” again, which would be kind of annoying. I don’t think we’ve “seen what Ramirez can do” in the majors, implying that he should never see major league time again, but I don’t know that I feel confident in his ability to beat MLB hitters, unless he’s improved his FB command. Then again, given that Eiland was the one who said that Edwar had that problem and didn’t think he’d succeed in MLB last year…I would assume he wouldn’t be on board with this decision unless he’s getting reports that it’s less of an issue now.
Mike R.
I never question the sophistication of Yankee fans. We’re the only ones that know Pope Benedict went to Spring Training with the Cardinals to get ready for this weekend. LOL
Re: #16 on the Pope’s robe…..The Yankess have retired #16……It belongs to Whitey….How I wish we he was pitching for the Yankees now!

LMAO
The hallowed grounds of Yankee Stadium will be watched while the Yankees are on a 3-city road trip.

I think I believe Dion. One because it sounds credible, two because it supports that A Rod is clean.
I don’t think Jose knows who Max is, he’s waiting to pay off any trainer to pretend to be him to bring down A Rod. He will try and meet with and convince Dion to do it, or else he will say Dion is not Max. Pretty desperate play by Jose.
Would I be right in surmising we’re saving Patterson for later in the year when we will need consistent bullpen help?
“Look at his increase in Blessings/Mass ratio.”
That is hilarious.
papal-reference.com!
AWESOME.
“Notice how they’re covering up all ads.”
Then what’s that red thing at the upper left corner?
“Notice how they’re covering up all ads.”

And the hess sign is still there!
Maybe the church has a contract with them!
I’m Catholic and I love the pope and mean no disrespect, but I broke out laughing at this:

I like the move to send Albie down. The pen is absorbing a lot of innings and making these kinds of moves helps them distribute the innings over a greater number of pitchers.
It’s interesting to see that it was Ramirez and not Patterson who got the call.
Ramirez is once again putting up pin ball numbers in AAA (k/9 - 14) hitters hitting 0.087 against him.
But he had similar numbers in AAA last year.
Not sure what they want to see from Patterson. I guess the issue with him really is AAA experience. He’s done fine in AAA (not great but not bad at all).
“Would I be right in surmising we’re saving Patterson for later in the year when we will need consistent bullpen help?”
I’m guessing he will be the 8th inning guy, he’s pitching the 7th & 8th in Scranton, they are bringing him in when in dicey situations, it’s a bigger trigger showing the Yankees are set to move Joba in the rotation this season. And if that is what it takes so be it.

Re: #16 on the Pope’s robe…..The Yankess have retired #16……It belongs to Whitey….How I wish we he was pitching for the Yankees now!
I disagree with you. Whitey would not be a big improvement over Mussina. He just doesn’t have what it takes to get modern day line-ups out. The guy is 79 years old for goodness sake.
Tonight’s lineup:
Damon
Jeter
Abreu
A-Rod
Matsui-DH
Cano
Giambi
Melky
Moeller.
I hear The Pope is going to play the entire Dark Side of the Moon live followed by a 12 minute version of Truckin’.
Should be a great show.
Whozat:
I’m glad you caught that. It’s always nice to be appreciated.
I think it’s time to move Damon down in the order. I was liking Melky in the leadoff spot.
A.B.K …good job, friend…where did you find it ?
I hope that I’m wrong about Edwar.
And the Pope prefers Pepsi over Coca-Cola.
Didn’t Patterson pitched too recently? Or am I thinking of another AAA reliever option?
This thread is hysterical.
As well as Edwar Ramirez has pitched in Scranton, it’s worth a shot to see if he can take that success and combine it with what he learned about major league hitters last year. nothing ventured, nothing lost.
There is very little wrong with the way the Yankee’s bullpen has pitched this year. As we all know, it’s the starters that have not held up their end of the deal.
How confused must Ohlendorf be? Since Spring training he’s gone from being a bridge to Joba to being a long reliever. The same thought for Bruney as well.
mike R, papal-reference.com ! fantastic!
Come on G. Love if the Pope is doing anything it’s gotta be In A Gadda Da Vida.

I am not so sure that Whitey with his “Slurve”, crafty moxie, and killer pick-off move would be less successful than Moose….even if he is 79 years old…..and there were no 3.5-4+ hour games when Whitey was pitching.
Ramirez won’t be up here for long.
Once Joba is back, you have to think he’s the guy who gets sent down.
Canseco knows Dion. In Miami, the athletes, trainers, and assorted others all know each other.
While its a big city, when it comes to sports, its a very small town. Everybody knows everybody.
Its pretty clear from the fact that Don Yaeger passed on this book, to the numerous factual inaccuracies already shown, “Vindicated” is a pile of garbage.
Its just the spewing of stuff from a very, very bitter man.
But, the national media deserves this. They branded this guy a “truth teller” off his last book.
In point of fact, he wasn’t a truth teller. He was snitch.
Now, you find out the guy is full of crap. Something all of us in South Florida have known for years.
mel
Is Edwar going to break my heart too?
“Didn’t Patterson pitched too recently? Or am I thinking of another AAA reliever option?”
Patterson pitched on wednesday. Ramirez pitched last on monday. I wonder if the yanks were considering calling him up and holding him out of games this week.

Did the Yanks give tickets to the guy sitting in Section 5 of the Tier that dances to Cotten eyed Joe on the center field screen every Saturday?
SSJ61*:
You make a good point. Whitey would be pitching on 15,000 days rest as well so he should be good to go deep into the game.
At the end of the mass on Sunday, will the Pope come running in and do a jumping high five with one of the cardinals like Melky and Cano do at the end of each win?
Who had 3 games in the “Mets fans boo Santana” pool?
I can’t seem to load up papal-reference - can someone look up Benedict’s VORP for me?
(Value Over Replacement Pope, of course…)
ok am I the only one who’s going to be sneaking a peak at Santana vs Hamels
They’ve got a great piece up over on ESPN.com where Gammons breaks down the importance of the Pontiff’s secondary pitches. You’ve got to be an Insider to read it though…
Tonights Mets game will be very interesting.
The Phillies hit left handed pitching very well and it’ll be Santana’s first time in that band box.
Hamels has been outstanding this year.
This is exactly the type of game the Mets got Santana to pitch - division rival, throwing out their own ace.
Great match up.
Hughes has a nice night to pitch weatherwise finally. I don’t think it’s really fair to evaluate those last 2 starts of his given the crappy conditons in KC and Boston.
“Who had 3 games in the “Mets fans boo Santana” pool?”
I had 7…but it should be interesting…
P.S. Bob Watson is reviewing Farnsy’s throw…WTF did we do to this guy
Suspending Farnsworth would help the Yanks. If Watson wanted to give out a punsihment he’d do nothing. lol
Brandon, I live in the Philly area, and I will have the Mets/Phillies game as my secondary option. That’s just too good of a matchup to not pay attention to. It just sucks that it’s not the Sunday night matchup.
Speaking of kids in Scranton, Shelley Duncan is eligible to return to the Yankees next week.
All Shelley’s done down there is go 11 for 31 for a .355 BA with 5 doubles, 3 homers and 7 rbi in 8 games. His OBP is .474 his slg% is .806 and his obps is 1.280.
As soon as we no longer need 3 catchers, it’s time to bring Shelley back, keep the Attorney General and let Betemit go.
Farny Never gets a break

UPDATE, 4:07 p.m.: I find it hard to believe that Chamberlain would throw at the head of Youkilis on purpose. What reason would there be?
Other than that there is always something between these teams, of course.
Just FYI, that walk is charged to Chamberlain. So if Youkilis scores, it breaks his string. Then again, Nancy Drew doesn’t hit in the clutch.
It’s time to play Shelley at 1st and let Gimabi take his rightful place on the bench.
Let’s just say Don did Canseco and favor by not letting SI know who “Max” was until the book was out for 2 weeks. That was his “parting gift” after he told Jose he no longer wanted his name connected to the book.
Kay is reporting that Bob Watson is investigating Farnsworth’s pitch last night.
If he gets suspended over that, its absolutely asinine.
Pedro Martinez hit Jeter and Soriano, sent both to the hospital, and didn’t get suspended.
At some point, MLB has to stop listening to Peter Gammons and stop protecting the Red Sox.
If Farnsworth gets suspended for NOT hitting Manny Ramirez, how does Aardsma not get suspended for hitting Arod?
We can all agree to disagree on whether or not Farnsworth was right in what he did last night.
However, he didn’t get thrown out of the game (as Joba did last year when he threw the two pitches over Youkilis’ head) and there is no way you can judge intent on what we saw last night.
If that’s what the game is coming, its in a very bad place.
Can Yohan tame the Fearsome Phils in their bandbox???
Major NL east showdown tonight
>> At some point, MLB has to stop listening to Peter Gammons and stop protecting the Red Sox >>
FWIW, the entire crew on BBTN was blasting Farnsworth.

Off topic, but I think moves like the Rays made with Longoria are going to start changing the economics of the game. We’re starting to see a lot more of this kind of thing and I think it’s good.
The most frustrating thing about watching Giambi hit is that he drove the ball to left field in Spring Training so well. In interviews he continually said how it’s easy to get into the bad habit of trying to pull the ball into the short porch. Everyone raved about how he was hitting to the oposite field like he used to. And then the season starts and he tries to pull every pitch!
He and Kevin Long need to get Giambi straightened out in the next month or so. Maybe bringing up Shelley or having Ensberg play first base while Giambi sits will drive home the point.
I know we’re all very Yankee-centric around here, but it sure seems as though everything that happens on the Yankees is reviewed microscopically and with a fine-toothed comb. I tried very hard not to view the Mitchell Report as having been especially hard on the Yankees — I chalked it up to the two “captured” parties having NY connections. But MLB and others seemed really too satisfied, after the report, to make it seem like an indictment of the Yankees’ championship teams, totally blocking out inconvenient details.
Now, with this situation - Farnsworth - I don’t know what to say. The umpire last night had no quarrel, apparently — he did not eject Farnsworth. He did issue warnings, as has happened in the past. I can’t remember another time when such a situation was brought to review before. Did the Red Sox request it? Did the hubbub by all the media result in the review?
I really am beginning to feel paranoid — is there really a witch hunt against the Yankees? I’m waiting for the ruling to come out that would hinder the Yankees in the draft. Any day now.
The Yankees are a target for all of this why? Because they are committed to winning and they do so?
SJ44,
I didnt understand Peter’s admonition that Farnsworth should admit he threw at Manny. Does he really think Farnsworth is going to give them a confession and get himself suspended?
Personally, I dont condone throwing behind anyone’s head. But Manny Ramirez disrespects his opponents, the umpires and the game itself. I couldnt care less if he had a pitch stuffed into his ribs each and every game till he changes his antics. He’s a 35 year old man and all this “Manny being Manny” stuff is a crock of youknowat.Throwing behind someone’s head is wrong though.
In the game the night before, Manny Ramirez was also allowed to argue a called strike and walk away from it. I just don’t get it. I remember a game last year when a Yankee, I think Jorge Posada maybe, argued a called strike against him and he was ejected. What am I missing here?
Doreen,
You are missing nothing and getting everything.
How great would it be if the pope entered from the bullpen to the sound of Enter the sandman.
will the beer still be $8.50?
