Statement from Joba

This statement from Joba Chamberlain, via the Yankees:

“After several difficult days, my father is feeling much better. He is still in the critical care unit of the hospital and more tests await him, but he is off the ventilator and breathing on his own. Each day he’s acting more and more like himself, and he’s even giving people grief —myself included — because the hospital doesn’t carry Yankees games on television.

“When things like this occur in life, you certainly take notice of how much your teammates become more like family members. Their unconditional support, along with that of so many fans, has made a very tough time easier to deal with. Everyone’s love has been felt by my entire family, and it has brought great comfort to us when we have needed it most.

“I look forward to being reunited with my manager, coaches and teammates so I can thank each of them personally for all that they have done for my family.”

What we don’t know yet is when Joba will be back but we should get more info on that later today.

Certainly great news about his dad.

    Good news!

Question about the bereavement list: Is Joba able to pitch a minor league inning or two before re-joining the Yanks?

joba is very lucky to be in the job that he is in. He is lucky to be afforded the time to take off to care for his father. In the ‘real’ world most companies would not allow their employee to take off all this time. (laws or no laws)

    That said god bless him.

Jennifer- where do you work? Our company follows the FMLA policies which this would quailfy for. We also have personal leaves and other such options to employees. They are unpaid but you get to keep your job while you’re gone.

That’s certainly good news, and I hope his recovery continues.

Definitely great news for the Chamberlain family. Joba has done his daddy real proud here, and it has nothing to do with baseball. This kid has character and his priorities are in order. All the more reason to root like crazy for him when he does resume his baseball career.

I’m not saying they won’t let you, but they won’t be like yeah take your time.

That said I am happy for him to be in such a postion.

    Good news for Harlan.
As for his son, if the Yankees did have thoughts of moving him to the starting rotation, the correct approach is to give him 2-3 starts between AA & AAA so he can get back to pacing himself as a starter needs to do.
A reliever’s mound presence is a different animal. Coming out of the bullpen for even 2 innings allows him to go full bore even if his pitch count were to reach 30 pitches.
As a starter, he has to give hitters different looks after the first at bat and hitters also make their own adjustments.
He understands this but he will still need to get his starter’s rhythm back in form.

    Good news about Joba’s father.

My prayers that Harlan is on his way to a full recovery.

    :-)

I like his statement about the hospital not having the Yankees games.

Continued thoughts and prayers for Joba, Mr. Chamberlain, and all their family.

Joba should get a slingbox for his dad so he can watch the games.
