V- You disagree with me, fair enough. I just hope that Giambi gets it together, whatever the case may be.

"If Molina is OK to catch and Jorge is being phased back in the lineup, why isn’t Moeller being sent down and replaced by Shelley ? This is baffling."

I think they want to make sure Molina's fine by playing him. Moeller's as good as gone if they option him down - he'll probably be taken off waivers.

Larry-

I have seen those job postings through mlb.com & some are available right now, perhaps when I retire it could be another great source of income.

Thanks for all the info & I read your blog all the time.

"There comes a time when you’re just not able to produce anymore. Giambi obviously isn’t hitting at all, and he isn’t having many good at-bats either. At least in the past when he was slumping he still seemed to be seeing the ball well, but it doesn’t look he is seeing it well at all now. "

I disagree - he's SEEING the ball fine. He's just fouling off way too many good pitches. I have to wonder if his bat has slowed down.

"So you’re that drunk guy who’s so slow in the Gameday updates."

I'm not drunk. I only drink Coke up here.

If we're waiting on the Official Scorer, we can't enter the play (I think they should change that, but so far no luck). If there's a lot of assists on the play, we need to make sure we have them all and have them right. And sometimes we make an error that needs to be corrected immediately (wrong pitch or something), so we have to disconnect and score on paper, then reconnect and catch up after we fix the error.

I like to think I'm pretty good at this, and you usually only have to wait 3 second after the pitch for the data to show up (the internet lag time). I do make dumb mistakes sometimes, though.

Stuart-

actually it is 10 days that he can't be recalled for- which should expire on this coming Thursday. However, if someone is injured he could be recalled earlier.

I say- if Posada can't catch- DL him and get him healthy- this playing him at DH/1B isn't getting him healthy. It is a long year- sit him down- bring up duncan and start playing him. Maybe that will shake Giambi up.

also, when they shift on Giambi like they do- he has to start taking advantage of that. If he had 8 HRs already or was hitting 350 anyway- they by all means, keep hitting into the shift. When you are hitting 120- you take what they give you. Hit a groundball to third and take the single/double. Maybe if you do that twice a game- and start hitting .500 for a week or two versus the shift- they will stop doing it and then those hot shots to the hole at second will be hits instead of groundballs to the short fielder in right.

this is my ultimate pet peeve right now. Makes no sense.

I work for Major League Baseball Advanced Media (the entity behind MLB.com). I and four others work all the games in Camden Yards and Nationals Park (we split up the schedule between us, though we switch around all the time). Being the only Yankees fan in the group, I have almost all the Yankees games.

We enter the pitch-by-pitch and play-by-play that gets used by Gameday (and is also what ESPN.com is using when they have those live updates on Baseball Tonight), and is used for the stats by all the teams. If you want to get an idea of what we do, download some of the game logs from Retrosheet -- the Project Scoresheet system that Bill James created and they use there is almost identical to the one we use here.

It's an awesome job. I can't miss a pitch, and it can get really hot in Baltimore, where there's an open press box, but it's free baseball. Well, I actually get paid for it, so it's even better than that. I was working the 30-3 game here last year, so I've already got a memory to take with me.

Next time you see job postings for Stats Stringers for MLBAM (on Monster.com, I think), that's what it is. Great, great job.
