Jersey pays off for charity

Peter Abraham
April

A car dealer in the Boston area dropped $175,000 for the David Ortiz jersey that was supposedly buried in the cement at the new Yankee Stadium.

Why somebody would that is a mystery to me, but the money went to The Jimmy Fund and that’s a good cause.

“I have three young boys that I take to the games and they would have killed me if I didn’t buy the shirt.”

Really, they would have “killed” you? What the heck is this dolt teaching his children? I guess it is important to spend nearly $200,000 on a t-shirt that was buried in a hole. There are only 2 good things about this story 1) the money this moron ponied up is going to a worthy cause and 2) it can now finally end.

  2. mel

It’s going to be framed and put up in the dealership. It’ll be a mecca/car buying trip for members of the Red Sox Nation.

I’m glad that something good came out of it, though.

    What goes around, comes around.

  3. ANSKY

… but they didn’t disclose the amount paid for an old David Ortiz jock strap, which was also buried in the same location. When asked how he had acquired Ortiz’ nasty underthings, the construction worker behind the scheme blushed and left the room.

  4. Don Vito A. Bellamo

so by mistake, that MORON BoSux fan actually did some good !…very nice ! :-)

  5. what.

    wow. INCREDIBLE.

  6. what.

phil will go two innings today. And i wonder if the Yankees would consider sending him down after he does. The kid is good but he is too young and needs further development in a less competitive league.

  7. Motown Yankees Fan

Don Vito – the Yankee organization did good, not the moron.

  8. saucY

anyone know if Gino Castignoli fired for this childish stunt? or at least buried in concrete where the shirt used to be?

  9. The other Todd

Kudos to the Yankee fan that stated this whole thing in attempt to extort a $175,000 donation form a Red Sox fan.

  10. Don Vito A. Bellamo

    Motown…my bad…sorry :-)

  11. John

I’m sure he’ll be passing on his good will to all of his paying customers. For whatever the reason, you can’t kill the guy because he made an insanely large donation to a good cause.

    Vin Scully on tmks

  13. owlnation

Either way, it’s good karma for the Yankees.

  14. Steph

I think the guy who buried it only worked on the construction site for one day: the day he buried it.

    Good for the charity.

  15. Amanda from La.

wow, must be nice to be able to drop that much money….can’t even imagine. good thing the money is going to a very worthy cause.

  16. cc

Either Ortiz or Manny will hit walk-off grand slam at bottom of 9th.

  17. Dennis-Costanza (sox fan)

What the Yahoo article did not mention is that his Dad died of cancer and his father-in-law has cancer.

More than likely teaching his kids a good lesson in giving to something you care about that hits close to home.

    Make more sense Pete?

Pete man, I and a sox fan and I love reading your blog but come one can you be any more condescending with this post?

Maybe the bidder just wanted to help out kids dying of cancer, and did it in this unique way. How about that Pete? The is no mystery, as you said, to why the guy/dealership wanted the jersey. He wanted to help out in this truly once in a lifetime way.

  21. whozat

“wow, must be nice to be able to drop that much money….can’t even imagine. good thing the money is going to a very worthy cause.”

I suspect the business spent the money. It’ll bring in customers, the money goes to charity (which also probably means it’s a tax writeoff)…basically, it’s kind of a win-win situation. The dealership gets good publicity, the guy gets to send some money to a charity that means something to him, and a good cause gets some cash.

  22. Kevin CT

I predict manny hits a 5 R walk off grandslamsolohr

  23. pat

    Shawn

How sweet and naive of you.

Someone who just wants to help out a charity, writes a check and doesn’t get his name in the paper.

This guy may have wanted to help the charity but he did it in this manner for the publicity it would give him.

Nothing wrong with that because the charity gets the money all the same but let’s call it what it is and not kid ourselves.

  24. Frank Discussion

This story started off as a bad joke, then turned comical when the Yankees spent big $$$ to dig up a piece of fabric that was probably manufactured in China. Nice to see such a positive outcome for a great charity. Kudos to all involved.

    Shawn:

    English helps…

oh and That must be the record for most expensive replica jersey ever.

  26. whozat

Well, THAT looked like a terrible 2-strike pitch.

  27. TKinDC

    Hey Dennis –

if you are still around – could you tell me if there is an innings cap on Lester or Buckholz?

    ty

  28. Mr. Exceptional

Interesting Giambi in front of Cabrera…can’t walk him now for a better match up with Melky being a switch-hitter.

  29. Dennis-Costanza (sox fan)

    Pat.

What the Yanks did for VT was amazing. I loved it. But please tell me the difference?

  30. Don Vito A. Bellamo

and Manny makes the final out in today’s BoSux loss…sweet ! :-)

  31. Dennis-Costanza (sox fan)

    TKinDC.

No innings limit on Lester. Bucholtz is 180.

    Hope that helps.

    Sux lose.

    Sux lose.

  33. mel

Thanks, pat! Nice to see Molina back.

We’re only 1 back in the loss column. A win today puts us 1.5 GB.

    Let’s go, guys!

  34. saucY

“I suspect the business spent the money. It’ll bring in customers,”

maybe it’s me, but it was just thinking the opposite. the jersey is now famous and a lot of people know how much it cost.

if you saw that jersey on the wall of a car dealership you walked into, would it dawn on you that you may be getting ripped off on a car?

  35. David

Pete, I think I can solve the mystery for you. The guy must have a lot of money, really like to collect sports memorabilia, and want to help in the fight against cancer… Is that really such a “mystery”? That is a one of a kind artifact that will never be available again. I’m a die-hard Yankee fan who collects Yankee memorabilia, but if I had $175,000 to spare I would have bought it in a second. I’m sure a lot of the people who were bidding on it were Yankee fans.

  36. Dynasty Is Destiny!

I think this whole thing is great! $175,000 to the Jimmy Fund and people are complaining? It’s too bad it didn’t raise more…

  37. geO

Aww man a car dealer bought it?!?

I thought it would be a bostonian jock would buy it with his college fund money.

  38. Shawn

    Pat and JBRO

Thanks for jumping on me big time, the very reason why Yankees fans get a bad rap. You two seem like stereotypical Yankee a$$holes. I had a typo and that results in me not knowing English & Pat man I am far from Naive buddy the dealer has had 2 close members of his family die of cancer. How about you go up to him and tell him he only did it for publicity. Man you guy are real classy guys. Way to go. Way to go.

  39. Dynasty Is Destiny!

Who cares who bought it or how much was spent? Money was donated to The Jimmy Fund!

    Be grateful for that!

  40. Vince

Charity is commendable but the entire Boston – New York thing has run the gamut with the rest of the U.S. and all the overblown hype.
There could be 6 no-hitters thrown on a given day and they’d get 2bd billing over a Yankee – Red Sox tilt.

  41. Marc

    You gotta love SI.com’s coverage
    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

Notice how they give all the credit to the Sox. Headline reads:

“Red Sox auction ‘cursed’ Ortiz jersey for $175,000″

Umm didn’t an independent laborer bury it in cement at Yankee stadium?
Didn’t the Yankees Organization pay to have it dug up?
Didn’t the Yankees make the gesture and donate it to the Jimmy Fund to auction for charity?

Why exactly are the Red Sox getting any credit for any of this? The whole thing was a silly event that was turned into a nice story. But the Yankees if anybody should be the ones credited with turning it into a charitable event by donating it not the Sox who’s only involvement was having their logo on the jersey as far as we know.

  42. Majambo

Obviously there are still idiots in Boston, notwithstanding the benefit to charity.

  43. Marc

Marc, The Jimmy Fund is the redsox main charity. The Yankees donated it to the redsox because it’s a redsox jersey. Why would the yankees sell something like that? The redsox probably would have done the same thing if they dug up a yankee jersey.

  44. Guido

    Pete:

“supposedly”? Wasn’t it actually buried in the cement?

  45. Jimmy the Saint

    Marc @ 9:39:
The Yanks should have auctioned it off and gave the money to the VT fund. Both VT and The Jimmy Fund are highly worthy causes.

  46. BB

I thought Girardi made wrong decision. He should keep Hughes on the mound.

  47. JJNJ

This was done for charity. Stop trying to figure out the intentions of the buyer, or making snide comments. This will help children with cancer, that’s the bottom line here.
